The Best Steakhouses in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors

"Owner, chef, and butcher Anthony Villegas opened his first Meat Cellar in 2016, only to secure an additional location in San Juan Capistrano in 2024. Both spaces maintain a bright and casual feel with a hearty menu dedicated to steak lovers. Every steak is hand-cut to order, including a wagyu picanha, Tomahawk, or dry-aged ribeye. The garlic mashed potatoes and mac and cheese are excellent, as is the serrano mushroom cream sauce." - Matthew Kang, Mona Holmes

Service was good. Staff were friendly, attentive and nice. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite meet my expectations, especially compared to other well-known steakhouses such as Gwen or CUT in LA. Steak and burger were ok. Fries weren't to my liking as they were the soft kind. However, if you're looking for a local steakhouse in the Inland Empire then it's still worth a visit as Meat Cellar is up there on the IE list (probably top 5).

Had an amazing time at the Johnnie Walker event. The whisky was outstanding, the cocktails were crafted with care, and the food was pure chef’s kiss. A truly great night with people who know how to do things right. Love the team at Meat Cellar. Will be back soon!

Expensive, delicious meals work well for anniversaries, this place fit the occasion. The meals start with a delicious complimentary cornbread muffins that served as a great precursor of what ro expect. They were cooked to perfection, soft & moist but not too flimsy that theycrumble when you spread butter on 'em,, and the honey butter paired exceptionally well with them. 1st time getting wagyu, we were able to pull the meat apart with a spoon OMG! About 100 bux per head to EAT!. Their mac&cheese was other-wordly. Not at all the type of mac and cheese for your flavorless, chicken-nugget-loving kids. It was an EXPLOSION of garlic and creaminess. Also tried their pouting. The dish was a little too salty, & I'm a salt loving guy. Fancy water bottles & good service.

The Meat Cellar in Claremont is a culinary treasure! The inviting, upscale ambiance creates a warm, cozy vibe. Service was impeccable—our server, wish I had caught Her name, was welcoming, courteous, and recommended a stellar Cabernet. The tomahawk steak was the highlight: unbelievably juicy, perfectly cooked, and bursting with rich flavor. It was a meal to remember. With generous portions and fair prices, The Meat Cellar delivers an unforgettable experience. Five stars for exceptional hospitality and cuisine!

I’ve been here now a total of 3 times and I say I won’t come back each time and yet here I am for the third time. I keep coming back as friends keep saying to give it another try. But honestly, it sucks. For a place called meat cellar. They should really learn how to cook a proper steak. Each time I go I ask for med/rare. The steak comes out either blue rare( 5 second sear, I could still hear the cow mooing!) or well done hard like a dinner plate. The amount of times I’ve sent steaks back should’ve bankrupt them. My 6yr can cook a steak better than these guys. I really hope they come to their senses and change their name or how they cook. My wife even got the fish and it was dry as a bone. I don’t understand how people call this place good. Service isn’t bad but food is awful. Go somewhere else. You’ve been warned :)

Wow. Best dinner ever. Went on a Friday night at 6. Just started getting busy when we left. Busy, upbeat, casual vibe. Maybe a bit loud inside but that’s ok. Excellent beer and wine selection. Portion sizes were very good. Recommend the prawns for a starter. The beet salad was excellent. Steaks were delicious and worth every cent! Highly recommend. My new favorite restaurant in this area by far!

Google
We had (the classic board) that had a little bit of everything, and it gave us a chance to try the veggies, bone marrow and meats with their different sauces. I would absolutely recommend that dish if it's your first time here. I shared it with someone, and it was just perfect to fill us up. By the way, I had the cornbread, and it was worth every calorie lol. Our server was very nice and friendly. I didn't catch her name. I live 1 hour away but I would drive back just to eat again...maybe next time I can try their cocktails.

Yelp
If you are into delicious and nutritious food, understand the value of no seed oils, home cooking made from scratch with high quality ingredients, this is your place. We seldom eat out but when I saw that they use beef tallow, avocado oil, olive oil and butter in their food sourced from farms, we were sold. Everything we ordered was amazing! Jumbo prawn corn and creamed mushroom Oyster Rockefeller Chilean sea bass Fresh cut fries Our server Clayton was very personable, warm and attentive. The atmosphere was casual and lively. We would definitely return for more real, quality (not processed) food.

Yelp
Super cool spot i definitely recommend, much better than flemmings in Rancho Cucamonga Food is cooked to request I would say it's a solid 8.5/10 for food rating But the service is a 10/10 I HIGHLY RECOMMEND asking for "Christian" super awesome and friendly great conversation but also is professional and gives you space to enjoy your meal He is the reason behind this 5 star review

Yelp
First and foremost, the ambiance is phenomenal. There is a wonderful interior, extensive seating, and great music. The menu is interesting, but much of the food is heavily laden with oil and/or dressing(s). The service is very friendly without being overbearing, and the overall experience does not disappoint.
google avatar

Rina L.

Yelp
Hands down the best steakhouse in the area. Quality meats and great customer service. Steaks are soft and buttery. Waiter was awesome and recommended dishes to us. Would definitely come back again.

Yelp
Had a delicious dinner on Friday night. Went early so they had happy hour till 6 so classic cocktails were on special and had to partake. Started with the wedge and some oysters. The ousters were also on the happy hour menu so I believe they were 4 for $12. They picked the oysters and all were good, in fact we ordered 4 more. My wife had the sea bass which was miso and was delicious especially with a little bit of the horseradish from the oysters. I had the fillet, and was not disappointed. Was a large filet, perfectly cooked with a nice crust from the meat cellar rub which is very tasty. It also came with potatoes and asparagus. What a great meal... I really enjoy this spot. Cool vibe , casual and very enjoyable. I will say I normally go with the blade steak when I dine here, always delicious but the filet was really good.

Yelp
My first time here... Not sure why I've missed this local restaurant but it's definitely a good place for large family gatherings and carnivores. Ordering was a bit different. We ordered meat by the pound to accommodate our group of 8 and a few sides along with that. The Mac and cheese was my highlight, pasta wasn't overcooked and dish was not dry. It had good flavor, cheese was well balanced and it didn't drown the pasta. Our Ribeye was perfectly grilled, well seasoned, and delicious! Our server was okay, could have been better with checking on our table while we were there. The order came out pretty quick, not too much of a wait after ordering. The chairs are pretty outdated and worn. You can see the wear and tear, other than that, Restaurant is clean and has a comfortable atmosphere. Will definitely come back. *Tip: RSVP
google avatar

Suzie T.

Yelp
We LOVE Meat Cellar! It's definitely our top choice for date night. Aged Ribeye may be my favorite cut while hubby's choice is always the Filet Mignon. Drinks are always good and we enjoy seeing the bartender Kenneth!
google avatar

Rae Ann D.

Yelp
We went out to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary and totally found this place by accident, and it was a blessing of an accident because we loved it!! We had the amazing Bacon which was our favorite item! The fries were delicious, the oysters Rockefeller and the roasted bone marrow were delightful. There was salt on the back of the plate for the bone marrow but we only noticed it after we ate half of it so make sure you add a strong sprinkle of the salt first before putting it on the crustinis. The service was good too, Pablo was the bartender; we enjoyed dinner at the bar top. The location was very busy on a Thursday evening around 7:30pm and so that's why we chose the bar top because it's a bit intimidating when you first walk in because it's one large room. The place is decorated so cute, minimal and quaint. We will be back!!
google avatar

Bernice G.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, braised short rib plate is my favorite. The corn bread, yummy! It's a little pricey and the reason I'm not adding the 5th start is because they charge you a service fee. It's already expensive as it is. I thought they only charged that if it was a party of 6+
google avatar

Yenni V.

Yelp
Food is always perfectly made and fast service. Love dom and his bestie at the bar top. They are always so pleasant

Yelp
I'd been eyeing this spot for a while and was excited to try their charcuterie and aged steak. The staff was friendly, and the ambiance was more casual than I expected for the price point. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was good but not quite worth the nearly 2.5X markup. The charcuterie was excellent--especially the mini chorizo, which was absolutely delicious. For mains, we shared the aged tomahawk steak and ordered sides: lobster mac and cheese, mushrooms (perfectly marinated), and mashed potatoes (good but could've been smoother). The steak was underwhelming--while the flavor was good but, the quality didn't justify the price. It was overly chewy, even though we ordered it medium rare. I appreciated that we weren't rushed, but the service could have been more attentive, particularly with serving the wine and checking in during the meal. The final bill came out to nearly $400 for two, which felt steep considering we shared the steak. If the meat quality matched the pricing and the service was more polished, the experience would feel more justified.
google avatar

Mariana G.

Yelp
Can't say this was the best steak I've ever had, but it definitely wasn't bad! It was cooked perfectly, which is often not the case when you ask for medium. That said, I didn't find anything particularly flavorful. Maybe I'm just used to a buttery, garlicky steak or creamy, salty mashed potatoes, but the flavors here didn't impress me. The cornbread, though was a different story. Hands down the best cornbread and butter I've ever had. I just wish they had brought out more! Service was great, and the food came out fast. All in all, if you're looking for a solid steak meal, I'd say give this place a try.

Yelp
We finally went to the Meat Cellar and I'm angry we waited so long! It was amazing. We went for dinner and caught the tail end of the Happy Hour. We ordered the lemon drop and mai tai off the Happy Hour menu and we didn't love either of them. My husband then ended up getting an Old Fashioned which he loved. We also got the fried pickles (which we loved) and truffle fries (they were heavy and a bit greasy). From the regular dinner menu we had the Caesar Salad, which was the best Caesar we have ever had. We also had the lobster Mac and cheese which was good. My favorite part of the dinner was the grilled asparagus. It was amazing!! Lastly, my husband and I shared the boneless rib eye which was super delicious. The restaurant was comfortable and we had a fantastic meal. We can't wait to go back!!

Heather M.

Yelp
What went well: the food was delicious and, as it was my birthday, they have me a cute birthday message in chocolate served with some ice cream. What went not-so-well: service was very slow. We ordered an appetizer which was eventually served WITH our meal. Drink orders took a long time to arrive. We sat at around 6pm and left at 8pm. 2 hours for 3 people seems a long time. We saw other larger parties being served before us and at a much faster pace and seemed to get more attention throughout their stay. I felt like our waiter was very nice, but he forgot about us for a good 45 minutes, at least. Also, the acoustics in the restaurant are bad. The menu reads as a high-end restaurant, but the vibe feels much more casual. I would return, but have higher hopes that service will be better next time.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
We were so excited to eat here and it did not disappoint. The steak was amazing, servers were friendly and helpful, and it was quiet and peaceful.

Yelp
Excellent food. Ate their rib eye sandwich at lunch, it was a 10/10. So moist and really well seasoned. Thick cut fries were great. Service was excellent. Can't wait to be back
google avatar

Lulu G.

Yelp
Everything was fresh, the service was impeccable, the food was delicious. The board had bone marrow, waygu and veggies. It was truly a great thing to share with the table. Def recommend the Mac and cheese as well.
google avatar

Dean T.

Yelp
I'll keep this simple: service was good and the vibe/ambiance of the restaurant is nice. We ordered a tomahawk steak and Brussels sprouts, one glass of wine and a bread pudding. The veggies were ok.. a bit heavy on the balsamic they used, but ok. The steak was fine... nothing particularly special about it. I've made comparable steaks at home. I don't see how this meal was worth anywhere near the $235 they charged (especially considering we came for lunch), so it's a one and done for me. If I come back, I'd only try the lunch sandwiches that seemed more appropriately priced.

Jan J.

Yelp
Went in on a Sunday evening at 5:00pm - service was good in this interesting restaurant concept - menu is very much high end but decorations are much more casual - I ordered a 1 lb New York strip - had more fat than I expected and would have enjoyed more sear on the outside - was a bit salty - my wife had the sea bass which was a nice sized portion - the surrounding vegetables it came with were very salty also - the masked potatoes however were very good. Cocktail of Vesper was excellent -
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
Very mid, and extremly pricey. Mastro price, but not Mastro ambiance, offering or service.
google avatar

Su-San Y.

Yelp
We visited on a Sunday evening. It was bustling but not full house so we were seated quickly. My first impression was that this place is loud! A lot of hard furnishings so it was hard to be heard. But people looked like they were having fun! Clinton was our server. And he was great. He was very observant and we never had to look around to ask for help. While we waited for our order to arrive we had the cornbread which was delicious but would have been better warm! It was served on an iron plate so I did expect it to be hot. We ordered a steak frites and beef rib poutine. The steak was medium rare, very tender and full of flavor. Not over seasoned like how some other places do it. I think they were a little over enthusiastic with the charring though, which made it a little dry on the surface. It was served on a bed of fries which were quite greasy but I'm not fussy with fries. They serve merely as a vessel for ketchup, and these were thick hearty fries with plenty for ketchup to hold on to. The beef rib poutine was rather salty. The beef was very tender though. This was supposed to be a small plate but it was more than enough for one. It is pricey and I am not sure I would visit again regularly. Worth a try though!
google avatar

Leighton P.

Yelp
Great staff and a small but extraordinary selection of beef and seafood on the butcher side. On the cooked food side, a small but mighty menu of cocktails and wine. We had a few cocktails (can't remember what), and beef sandwich and fried chicken sandwich, all amazing. Just for the atmosphere, care taken with the seafood and meat, and the amazing staff, I'd go back in a thrice.
google avatar

Beverly M.

Yelp
I ordered the salmon and the beef sandwich. Both were fine but too salty and greasy for my liking. I would say the price was not justified considering the price. I also stood at the front door 5 minutes while a server ignored me and didn't even care to acknowledge me. Once the host who brought me my order came to the front she was extremely friendly and sweet. I can't say I'm interested in coming back considering my last experience.
google avatar

Mohamad J.

Yelp
I must admit, I had some quite high expectations for this steakhouse, considering it is one very expensive, and two...it's an "authentic" steakhouse... Seating and service was perfectly fine for a Saturday night/evening, and our waitress was very helpful and engaging, ambiance is great and I love the colors throughout the restaurant. We ordered the 1 LB wagyu score 9, score 7, and the ribeye, two medium rare and one well done. We did wait about half an hour for our steaks to come out but ordered some appetizers. To cut it short....the steaks were not as "mouth watering" and I would have expected or hoped. Honestly they were not cooked very well at all, I felt like mine was half burnt while the other was cooked medium well. I prefer my steak well done so I wouldn't expect my $100 steak to be charred on half side. The other two score 9/7 were decent, however did not taste amazing. Overall, for three people - spending near to $420, I was very unimpressed and a bit unsatisfied. It upsets me because I am a huge steak lover and to not walk out of there very happy, I felt a bit wonky knowing we just spent this amount of money for some (what it felt like) average steaks.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
I've been here several times and the food is delicious every time. I really do love it here. The food is great, the drinks are tasty and the service is 10/10! It is also very clean inside which I love. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Marlene L.

Yelp
Loved everything from the moment we walked in. Service was beyond excellent. The appetizer was delicious & the food 10/10. Definitely will be coming back (:
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times now and the food is always excellent!!! The service is amazing, all the staff is great. I can't tell you what my favorite thing I've had here is but we've tried probably half the stuff on the menu and not a single item has been just ok, it's all been very flavorful

Anthony B.

Yelp
Had two Wagyu ribeyes New Year's Eve. Very disappointed very chewy. I don't believe they were wagu ribeyes. Won't make that mistake again
google avatar

Loren H.

Yelp
What I had: - Sweater weather ($15) - Boss lady ($15) - Shortrib grilled cheese ($16) - Pork Bahn Mi ($16) - Mac and cheese ($13) How it tasted: - The absolute star was the short rib grilled cheese. The drinks were also quite tasty, but I definitely think of that lunch shortrib dish (dinner one is solid too). Why did I give it a four? - Staff have always been super friendly and accommodating. The food comes out within reasonable time and has never disappointed my palate. Verdict? - Give it a go if you're in Claremont.

Yelp
Food was so great! Wagyu board was so yummm and i ordered dry aged ribeyes which was great as well. Salad was fresh too I will definitely come back
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
The steak is amazing and far above all other restaurants in the area. Please don't let the young impolite kids seating people scare you off. It is a casual, comfortable setting. The service is usually amazing. We had a new waiter once so he gets some grace. I haven't had a bad meal yet!!!
google avatar

Rafeek Y.

Yelp
Ambiance - 5/5 From the butcher counter to the open kitchen to the bar everything was well thought out. Food - 5/5 The steak amazing and the Brussels sprouts were great. I would definitely order those again. The salad was ok. I would probably try another salad next time. The portions were huge. Between the wife and I we didn't finish any of the sides. Service - 5/5 Alex was our server and he was top notch. He was very knowledgeable and provided a bunch of great recommendations. We will definitely be back.

Jeroen S.

Yelp
Amazing steak , amazing service !! Nice relaxed ambiance. Will make this my go to place for steaks from now on !
google avatar

Jeffry C.

Yelp
The meat cellar is for sure a place to check out. The biscuits , delicious. The burger was good , I did ask for medium rare and it came out well done . Oh well. It was still juicy. Ok, so the fries , soggy. Way too greasy. A lil bit of a disappointment because I love the fries here . The steak wedge was a hit , for sure super yummy. My friends loved the bone and marrow and they were saying "omg soooo good" I gave it a try , just. It my thing . The drinks , WOW! Amazing! Both were great choices. I will say that the feel of the place is very nice but at the same time casual dining. Our server Clinton was phenomenal. Always attentive and super sweet ... just great, great service. For sure will be coming back here .

Yelp
Last night my husband wanted to have a nice dinner for an early anniversary celebration. We ordered the bone marrow, filet mignon, braised shorts ribs (like our server Kenneth recommended) and sautéed mushrooms, with a couple drinks. We got through our drinks and bone marrow (which was amazingly delicious) when our 6 month old daughter started have an allergic reaction. We had to leave immediately but the staff was able to quickly help us get ready to leave for the hospital (she's doing more than fine after a good night's rest). Kenneth was fantastic and the host and hostesses were friendly and welcoming. I hope the other guests didn't have their meal and experience interrupted. Hopefully next time we get to enjoy our entire meal! Thank you to the entire staff at the Meat Cellar! Edit: My husband told me they didn't charge us for what we didn't get to eat! Thank you so much Meat Cellar.

Yelp
Location: Off of foothill & Indian Hill Parking: On the smaller side but if you're lucky it won't be much of a fight. Food: DELICIOUS! DELICIOUS! DELICIOUS! Tomahawk was everything and more! The flaky salt & pepper on the side made even better. Nothing worse than table salt on a fine cut of steak. It's so delicious no sauce or butter needed. Perfectly cooked medium. Broccolini was so good, flavorful and kick of spice, hint of lemon and salt. Hot with still a bite to it. Great side if you're low carb. -Lobster Mac N Cheese- Seriously, can life get any better. This Mac and cheese had big chunks of lobster. Not even Mastros compares. These chunks are big enough for me a low-carber to pick out and eat. Soooo good and affordable! -The tuna tartare is by far the best in the area, no raw egg to ruin it either, nor capers. It's plain, flavorful and the quality just speaks for itself. Side note I just wish there was more mustard as it really compliments the dish. - Drinks are alcohol heavy and worth every penny. Service: Top notch, our server was amazing. He went all out for us. He was checking on us often but not overbearing. Ambience: Good background music that allowed tables to talk without yelling. We always thought this was a fancy place and upon entering we realized it's more laid back than expected and I loved that. Can't wait to come back.

Chris L.

Yelp
I never leave reviews... this was just soooo bad. I had to let others know what an unpleasant experience it was and how overpriced it was. If you're looking for an extremely, incredibly loud, rundown (cracked, stripped-down pleather) school cafeteria experience, then this is the place for you! The service was poor at best. Had to look for the waitress throught the meal for beverage orders, and the simple meal took 55 minutes to serve. To boot, the Christmas lights were unplugged with the cables on the floor. Management is out to lunch! Never again! So sad : ((
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
A little disappointed we couldn't do the dinner menu. We tried the ceaser salad and the dressing tasted like mayonnaise, Brussel sprouts were really good, my burger was delicious, wife had ribeye sandwich which she really enjoyed. Whiskey flight was nice service was ok. Would like to come back for dinner but most likely not.

Nikki S.

Yelp
THEE best steak I've ever had and a beautiful full bar. You can get specific cuts to take home from the little "deli" inside too
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday and I'm so glad that I did. We made a reservation so we didn't have to wait in line but the place was packed so glad that we did. You know that when your tap free water is bomb everything after will be bomb. Best tap water. After they give the table these corn bread muffins with pieces of corn. They are to die for. We ordered the rib eye and wagyu piccania, oysters, bacon appetizer and some pecan dessert. Every meat that we got was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Everything was so delicious. I can't wait to come back and try more. They also have a section of the resturant to buy meat to cook at home.

Gurbinder S.

Yelp
Good non veg food Meats are great Good service Little loud a little rustic in style
google avatar

Phillip V.

Yelp
The Service here was outstanding, pair that up with a nine score wagu ribeye accompanied by bacon brussels sprouts to die for made an experience unlike no other. The flavors that came out of the ribeye were delightful, if you ever are in the area and have the urge for steak, this is the place to visit. The restaurant has a very classic/vintage vibe that goes perfect with the way they provide Service and food.
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Amazing service!!! Kenneth/ Duke and the team behind the bar were amazing!! Started with an A5 old fashion and a No Money/ No Honey. Food was amazing and we will definitely be back!!!
google avatar

Esther M.

Yelp
The ambiance was good but I'm not sure if it gave me a high-end steakhouse vibe. The service was pretty slow considering there were only 4 tables when my friend and I got there. It took awhile for the server to take our order, bring out our wine, and food. We ordered the salad, brussels sprouts, steak, and glass of wine each. TBH, we were not full lol. The plating for the steak was alright lol. It just looked very plain and small. Everything tasted pretty good but it was definitely not worth the price considering the portion and the slow service. Not sure if I would come back again.

Alexander S.

Yelp
Cornbread was great. Steak had good flavor however unevenly cooked with some parts charcoal. Fish was good. Truffle Fries taste good but looked dead. Asparagus just okay. Service was okay. Ambiance is casual and very loud so not good. Wait time for food very bad. We sat down around 6:15 pm and got our food almost at 8:00 pm. Steak cook time was specified on the menu. The bigger the steak the longer the cook time. You pay more with a credit card!! Price $288 with tax, plus $45 tip for 1 ribeye, 1 miso fish, 1 cocktail, truffle fries, and asparagus. - Never again. Just go to Nick + Stef's or other fancier restaurants with better service, ambiance, food, and price point.
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
I love this place. I got a gift card from my daughter for Father's Day. And I just found it in my things. So I went on over for a late lunch. Steak, Fritts and an old-fashioned. You can't go wrong the place is super clean. The staff is always friendly. Ryan and Emily took great care of me thank you
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go to go for a special occasion. The meat is probably one of the best quality I've had. The sides are amazing and the drink our crafted. The service has always been great and the ambiance is warm and inviting. They are pretty pricey BUT it's worth it. Looking for cocktail recommendations Try the boss lady or the no money no honey 10/10

Yelp
Nice ambiance good drinks and food. Friendly service . The drinks and appetizers are great.
