The Melt is good for two things only:
- late night
and/ordesperate hunger. Although, considering there are a few Super Dupers within walking distance of the Melt, unless I'm lazy and craving a grilled cheese+soup, I'd always pick Super Duper over the Melt for a burger.
Unfortunately, San Francisco doesn't have many late night options, and this is one of the only, so I've eaten more Melt than I like to admit. It hits the spot if you're desperate OR in a rush, but otherwise, I would skip.
Service is fine and all, workers are doing their jobs with the tools they've been given. Can't ask for much more given they're paid poorly and work in this area of town, inevitably dealing with a lot of BS and no battle pay compensation. Grant them grace, they deserve it.
Ambiance is... worth avoiding if you can, as this is not the neighborhood to be chillin' in if you have other options. I wouldn't eat-in past sunset; 7/10 times, I've had the Melt *delivered* if after dark.
I've had a lot of the menu, as I've lived and/or worked near various locations ever since they opened in Stanford Shopping Center ~2011. The quality of the grilled cheese and soup hasn't changed since those days, but the melts with more meat/substance are super hit and miss.
