The 67th floor of the Sears Tower (sorry Willis. Unless you're Bruce Willis, it'll always be Sears Tower for me.) was nice, but I felt like the views weren't breathtaking as they would be at Hancock's 94th floor Signature Lounge. But this was a family dinner, so I was happy to go with loved ones.
Being the Sears Tower, there are two security checkpoints before you go up. The first one at the front desk confirming you have an appointment, and then the second one with full metal detector and bag scan. Kind of annoying when you're dressed up and full of metal belts, wallets, and jewelry, but I guess it's for the safety of everyone.
Once up at the restaurant, it's quite a small space; but still a very nice ambiance. If you have a party of 4 or less, you should definitely get the window seat as that makes the experience (we had 6 so we had to sit towards the center, which made the experience feel like any other restaurant.)
We had prix fixe dinners, so we each ordered an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. I went with the roasted pear, the veal, and the passion fruit + blood orange sorbets (you can mix flavors!) while the rest of the table went with pretty much everything else. Crab cakes, scallops (winner), filet mignon, ribeye, and the lobster pasta.
The veal was alright, and I probably should have gone with the ribeye. But I do like trying different things versus a homogenous group order of steak. The pear was interesting, but my sense of adventure failed me here and I probably should have gone with a "safer" choice.
BUT, the sorbet was pretty fantastic! I really loved both flavors of blood orange and passion fruit (they have more that vary per day!). Super light yet not too sweet, not too icy. Too bad they don't have something similar downstairs. Really loved the sorbet :)
Overall, a pretty good experience for a family dinner. There's definitely places out there with more wow factor, but having dined at the Sears Tower once is pretty cool.
