The 15 Best Classic Mexican Restaurants In LA

"Open since 1965, The Mexican Village is one of the most historic Mexican restaurants in LA—and also one of the most fun. Head to this massive spot on Beverly Blvd. (where Historic Filipinotown, Virgil Village, and Silver Lake converge) and get treated to a loud, raucous dining room filled with family gatherings, weekly karaoke, and a lot of margaritas. This is the kind of spot where everybody who walks in is a regular and greets the waitstaff not with a reservation name, but a hug and a kiss. You can’t go wrong with any of their big combo platters (the chile relleno is a particular standout), and for margaritas, we love the refreshing heat of the cucumber jalapeno." - brant cox, garrett snyder, arden shore

First time here and I absolutely love it. The service is Amazing and so fast. The staff and so friendly. The best way to explain the vibe is being at a resort in Mexico but with all the good parts about it. Its very happening and the food is so good

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved Mexican Village! The atmosphere is cozy and authentic — perfect for relaxing and enjoying good food. I had simple fajitas that were full of flavor, and a mezcal margarita that was absolutely delicious. The service from Abigail, the bartender, was outstanding — super friendly, attentive, and full of great energy. She really made the experience special! You can also tell that the owner, Abel, is a very kind person who puts real care into the place. There’s a warm, genuine vibe throughout. I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

Google
A wonderful, family owned restaurant! They've been around for 60 years. Great food and really excellent drinks! Danny the bartender is a mezcal expert and it shows. Would recommend for big groups and fun celebrations. Plus, the owner and his wife were so friendly.

Google
One word... loud! This place is a good time, I've now been here a minimum of 3 times, and it's cool but very loud! The food is great, the queso fundido with chorizo is pretty good...I just wish there was more chorizo....lol so whatevs. We had the carne asada plate... which includes rice, beans, grilled chile, grilled green onion, pico, and guac...oh and I requested a chile relleno on the side I dont trust restaurant beans ever because of a story I heard as a child...so I always make sure to let restaurants know that I would rather not have any...I ordered my meat medium rare....because yeah no to well done... When my food arrived, I noticed beans, and the server declared that the meat was well done just like I asked....uhmm???...no! Politely I informed him of my requests and this man tells me that the way it was served was the way I asked for it...regardless I decided to stop engaging him at that time and I just told the very nice lady who took my order, she took it back and assured me that everything would be just like I asked....(This is great. Don't be that first guy) Once my food finally arrived...it was delicious! flavorful meat, rice was perfect (I love mexican rice, wish I could learn to make it). The guac... was guac-ing...and the sauce over the chile relleno was magic! So good! Minus that little incident everything else was perfectly lovely....by the time we were ready to leave...we couldn't wait to get the check because out of nowhere it got even louder...like really really loud, music, and parties at other tables! Check it out!

Google
to be honest, when i first pulled into the parking lot with my parents, we were a bit skeptical. but the fact there was a parking lot at all was a HUGE plus. we went when there weren’t any events going on, it was quiet, lovely atmosphere, very attentive staff and we met the owner as well who was so sweet. the food was incredible, although it took a while to come out. they were able to accommodate vegetarian options which was lovely. we had verde enchiladas, veggie fajitas and a veggie tostada. all were super yummy and fresh. will definitely be back and the happy hour prices for margaritas are great as well!

Google
To start with Music is really loud! 🎶 it’s not necessarily good or bad thing- but just what type you prefer personally! We loved the vibe . I would give 5 stars without a doubt only if it wasn’t for the “glass break” noise that happens every 10 mins. It’s annoying- it’s one of their staff breaking/ trashing glass bottle or something like that. But that was super annoying. Out side of that- food. AMAZING! Service WONDERFUL. Our server was FANTASTIC being. He was just absolutely amazing. His name is Able. We loved the overall experience. Wish they can do something about that annoying glass break sound!

Google
Called to make sure they didn’t put any beans or guacamole on my nachos, asked nicely and the guy that answered hung up on me for no reason. Said please, just wanted to make sure they didn’t put any beans or guacamole because I’m allergic so never got to even try them out. Will remember this place and recommend against them. 🫡

Yelp
Recently celebrated my birthday at the Mexican village and it was beyond perfect, Abel and Abel Jr made sure my guest and I were taken care of. Continuously checked in not only with me but my guest, kept our tables clean and fully stocked with clean glassware, napkins, ice, juices, plus fresh chips and salsa. We ordered some food which was very tasty and came out hot and fresh. The bar is well stoked and the price(per bottle) was very reasonable and comfortable. Over all it was a great experience and the staff (from the security guards at the door to the busboy) made my celebration such a success. I danced the night away alongside my guest with the great selection and variety of music the dj played that made everyone compliment me on my choice of location for my celebration. Thank you Abel and crew for such a great night, I will definitely recommend the Mexican Village to other acquaintances and will be back to celebrate future events!!

Yelp
Went for my friend's anniversary. We loved the high vibe of the Latina musica!! The Margherita' are very strong. We danced the night away. Coming back for sure!!!

Yelp
I come here a lot for their music and dancing. They play cumbia, rock en Espanol, salsa, bachata and reggaeton (which is quite th selection). I've only tried their food a couple of times but it's decent Mexican food. The kitchen does close early. They have a full bar with a wide selection of spirits and liquor. It does get quite loud as it gets later into the night, just a heads up. But that's on the dancefloor, there's an outdoor area with a pool table and TV's with games on. Otherwise, if you're new or experienced to dancing, you'll find all levels here and may even learn a new move or two.

Yelp
First i would like to say i have been going to this restaurant for 30yrs +( yes met my husband there). I went to celebrate my milestone bday (60th)there and was ready to party with all my old friends and new friends ..what was suppose to be a memorial day turned out to be a disaster with me crying my guest very pissed and almost leaving. 1. Not my fault you were short 1 bartendar and i server... me and my guest came to spend money.. not being accused of my guest drinking out of souvenir cups. So what they were souvenir cups they want to drink out of them from the alcohol, soda water they paid for so fn what... dont come at me and say you dont know if its a bottle they bought in.. and its a problem... no you were the problem very fn rude been going there too long never caused problem there ..im about supporting small business and you should not treat your customers that have been there for that many years.. especially paying customers.. if it was not for my big party your place would have been empty. Wow so dissapointing my boyfriends famy was there for first time and they said they dont want to go back they says everything. Oh and your pool table if you thought we were going to steal it thats down right ridicoulus why did your sister(Diana) kept going back there while my bf and his brother in law was playing a game of pool?.they told me she made me feel uncomfortable. All i have to say is becareful with this place Abel and Diane( owners) did me dirty and i will remember this for thd rest of my life.. Thats why there are no starswont be going back and neither will my friends

Yelp
Came on a Saturday to enjoy some drinks and music. This place was def the latin fix I needed. DJ played merengue, cumbias, rock en español, bachata, salsa, reggeaton, pretty much every latin genre my soul needed. I recommend you come and enjoy dinner before their dance/music scene. They have bar seating, and dining room seating which is away from the dance floor. They also have a covered outside patio with seating and a pool table. I hadn't been here for a long time, previously they had valet and a different bartendar, and they were incredible! Always smiled and greeted. I think I may have to get reacquainted with the new staff. The bartendars didn't smile much but may be due to them bein so busy on a Saturday night and they no longer have valet, which is ok as the parking is convenient. Overall, I enjoy this place. It is casual and small enough that it doesn't feel like a club but music and lights make it feel like a club without being pretentious. It's the perfect balance, made me feel like I was at my family's backyard fiestas without the tia's being chismosas. Only recommendation, the speakers can use an upgrade.

Yelp
Well I been here a few times order flautas twice and to be honest the first time my flautas were over cooked chicken was so hard to chew it was burn the second time same thing very disappointed I'm here because my friend like this place. Today we're just here for drinks but guess what m!! The drinks were good until we order another no teacher left behind lol the drinks has a jalapeño to give that kick of spicy flavor, well the 2nd dink we ordered didn't have the jalapeño flavor so we asked the bar tender and he said it has jalapeño so we asked if it was bended because there's no flavor so he asked oh! You want jalapeño (he realize he didn't add no jalapeño to the drink, think) we said yes he got upset and give us an attitude for asking LOL Really!!!! The drinks is not free he should pay more attention when he's making drinks.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night and despite being busy, we were seating right away and the food came fast. The rice and beans and vegetarian, so lots of great veggie options!
google avatar

Kenny Y.

Yelp
Cassie F. and I were hungry for some Mexican food on a Friday night, so I checked my handy Yelp and looked for the closest Mexican restaurant. The Mexican Village Restaurant popped up! Upon arriving the 2 double doors, lays old school Mexican village style restaurant and a big screen TV on the right with a dance floor. Something we were surprised to see when just looking for dinner! The waiter was very attentive, got our orders, and the food came out in about 15 minutes. I got the tostada and Cassie got the cheese enchiladas which were both very authentic and delicious! I must say it's hard to have a conversation because the music makes you want to dance!
google avatar

Vince F.

Yelp
Great food and awesome drinks. Specialty drinks are good but regular drinks are super reasonable.
google avatar

Guillermo S.

Yelp
We've been to the Mexican Village several times for their HH as it's less than 5 mins from my wife's school where she teaches. Most of their drinks are quite tasty and also unique. Although my sister recently tried their Caipirinha and she hated it. (I believe she said it was way too sweet) Their portions are quite generous and we often come home with leftovers. I love that this is still a family-owned business and the owner often comes to greet the customers. How often do you see that? Food wise, very tasty. My favorite dish is their Queso Fundido w/Soy-rizo. So tasty I often just have that as my meal. Their veggie fajitas are one of the best veggie fajitas I've ever tried due to the variety of veggies. I esp recommend this restaurant for vegetarians who love Mexican food. We haven't been dancing there but it looks like it could be fun (since I am handicapped, I would have to get creative there. But overall ambiance is fun! Parking is ok, I never know when it's free to self-park or the valet will charge. But this is LA after all...when is parking simple?

Yelp
I hate to write a bad review for this place because the servers were so nice and the busboys were very kind but this was just an overall disappointing experience. The food was just not good and I don't remember it being this bad last year, so I'm not quite sure what has happened since then. The quality of the meat in my grilled chicken tostada salad was very cheap and the salad was generally bland. I used to order delivery but the place just left a bad taste in my mouth overall because of the nickel and dime-ing of charging for chips and salsa, then the cost of valet, on top of the place not being very clean and the music was unreasonably loud. Maybe I'm being overly critical because it was so overpriced but I expected more since we used to order delivery from here. We should have known better when it was empty on a Saturday night.
google avatar

William R.

Yelp
I'm not one to leave many reviews on this app. But, for this, I will. Fantastic service, great prices, delicious food, great margarita, fun environment (with a quieter room option) and real satisfaction! I love a restaurant like this. It reminds me of home!
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
This is not to be a bad food review. Rather it is a food service delivery complaint. My delivery arrived by GrubHub with the bag wide open. I am also a restaurant owner and my staff are instructed to seal every bag with staples and tamper-proof tags. In the past, I have had problems with delivery drivers stealing food. I encourage the owner who reviews this to ensure customers receive sealed food. The food is amazing by the way!! Just my recommedation.

Yelp
The food was delicious The margaritas were amazing I had the strawberry blended sugar rim Trixie had her skinny and she liked so much she had thank you David What really was the best part was Abel coming and asking if everything was okay and was very nice

Brenda A.

Yelp
We came to celebrate our friends birthday , and we had an amazing time and the food was incredible. We had the fajitas and the chile relleno . Music was also great !!!!

Loriel A.

Yelp
Tried this spot and was pleasantly surprised by the karaoke night and the flavorful food. Apparently this restaurant has been around for a few decades. As a native LA resident It was my first time trying this place. The food was delicious and service was great! Reasonably priced at this day in age and the portions were plentiful.
google avatar

Bianca R.

Yelp
Amazing service from our waiter Abel, portions were hugeeee, and the place felt really cozy. I love it!

Jasmine D.

Yelp
An absolute vibe on a Friday night! This was a perfect place to get together with some of my college buddies who moved across the country. We enjoyed a night of drinks, good food, and dancing. Although we were the youngest people there, it was so much better that way. This restaurant is the perfect place to be if you want authentic Mexican food away from tourists within a community of people who know how to have a good time and welcome people to join them. 5/5 starts easily!
google avatar

Rosie A.

Yelp
Food was good.. I had the chile relleno and it was yummy however the service from the older lady (owner I think) was horrible.. not friendly or accommodating.. our young server was super nice!!
google avatar

Yelp
I read about The Mexican Village being one of the last surviving old school Mexican restaurants in LA so I was really excited to try it. When you pull in to the parking lot, you see gates that look like they were in an old Hollywood movie. The outside of the restaurant also looked promising! The inside is a different story. It looks like they gutted the place, getting rid of all the old-school charm. There are no booths... it's all chairs and tables and they are not nice tables and chairs. Lighting is super bright is some parts of the restaurant and ok in others. It looks like a dance club now and the restaurant is secondary. It is not a comfortable atmosphere. Our waiter was amazing and very friendly but the other staff was aloof and not friendly at all. We were treated as outsiders. The food however was kind of amazing. My verde enchiladas were bomb. The sauce is tangy and just the way it should be. The cheese they use is awesome. Our chicken fajitas were also stellar. Chips and salsa were solid. They should have kept it original and charming and old world.. As it is now, it is a hodgepodge, not comfortable and not cute. I just wanted to sink into a red leather booth and have a margarita, you know. Not happening here. I probably wouldn't come back unless they change it back to what it once was.

Yelp
I had three interactions with management that were unnecessary. And then, somebody said they were closed when I clearly was in the process of leaving. The two folks who waited me were great. Management asked if I was going to buy food when already I told him I was. Then he told me the kitchen was closing when about eight minutes earlier, the waiter told me that it was closing in 30 minutes. And then he told me around 1:45 that I needed to wrap things up when the waiter told me I could be there until 2. He also told me that before the rest of the patrons were told me that. (For what it is worth, I am transgender.) I ordered not just a main course, but an appetizer, drink, and dessert.

Pamela C.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican spot in the area. Food is amazing they do themed nights once in a while. The service is decent, everyone is very nice but they don't check in you a lot

Sofia P.

Yelp
I LOVE this place i go with my girl friends any time we want to get silly drunk on cheap margarita pitchers. Happy hour is the best on fridays and the service has always been 11/10. The guac and enchiladas are really really good

Jordan C.

Yelp
They served my party of 45 people amazingly and were pleasant the entire time. Thank you Diane. :) Food was good, a lot of the people I invited had great things to say about the chicken. The ambiance was great as well with the decorations they have.
google avatar

Motivated D.

Yelp
Just moved in a block away and was excited because my girl loves Mexican food. Went for happy hour and told the waiter specifically we wanted the happy hour menu. When we get the bill everything was regular price. I told him and showed him the bill and the HH menu pictured. He came back 20 min later with 4 bucks off and said the 10-12 HH is only for DRINKs not food and that well vodka drinks aren't included when the menu doesn't say any difference between the 4-8 HH and the 10-12 HH and well drinks are clearly listed. I ask for manager. 15 min later someone else comes and tells us that the HH is only for FOOD and not drinks. The opposite of the first guy. At this point I'm over it and just want to leave. He said there is no manager there to change the bill. The 4 dollars off was given to us in cash to add to the shadyness. Food was ok and the guy was friendly considering but doubt I'll be back after that. It's a shame too, we could have been regulars. I'll post a pic of the bill and menu. See for yourself.
google avatar

Dora L.

Yelp
They have valet. They park your car and don't tell you the price beforehand and that it's only cash. Ridiculous. It's not even street parking. Horrible. Never going back. Food is not that great either. Place is only for drunks and smokers who don't really care about food.

Kelly S.

Yelp
So good. Great service. Exactly what i is was craving!! Margaritas especially during happy hour was strong and i oh got mine blended.
google avatar

Jocelyn V.

Yelp
Amazing food definitely would recommend for a small gathering with your family, and the service perfect super friendly Thank you!
google avatar

Ana N.

Yelp
They sat us down very quickly that was great.. the problems started when the waitress tried to take our order. She told the order for half our table and walked away and did not come back. The manager stopped by and asked if we need it anything we did let him know that the girl just walked away without taking our order. He apologized and send a different waiter to take our order. They take our order we asked for the cards asada medium rare. What we got was chewy tasteless meat. No one comes back until later to leave napkins and to bring tortillas. No refills nothing. We also ordered a burger rare it arrived super dry and well done. We also ordered enchiladas, there was no flavored to them. Our tortilla soups was as tasteless as rest of our food.. the only thing that is decent was the guacamole once we added salt to it. Do not recommend. We were visiting LA and it was on our way from the theme park and thought it would be a good place to dine since it said it was kid friendly. The ambiance was noisy definitely not kid friendly with people drinking and dancing and we could smell cigarette smoke from outside. The restaurant it self looked nice and I was hoping for good food but I was distracted.
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
The food is soooo delicious every time I come here! I recommend the appetizer platter that has a little bit of everything or the fajitas. The owner and staff is also willing to do anything to make your experience a good one. 10/10 recommend this restaurant
google avatar

Mia L.

Yelp
I've eaten here a few times to go and in restaurant. Great service, food is good (little bland beans) taquitos are great, mole is good, drinks are cheap and good. I would definitely be back.
google avatar

Cindy F.

Yelp
The service all around was great!!! The food was delicious and the drinks were great! The manager Omar was so attentive and awesome! I would definitely come back!

Eve V.

Yelp
Another trip to our fave spot... this time we had to try dessert and wow wow! It was just so perfectly delish. I've never been fond of 3leches cake but this time I gave in. Beautiful presentation and perfect taste! I highly recommend any dessert lover to try it, you won't regret it.

Yelp
We came to this establishment to celebrate a friends Birthday . It's fuera favorite spot and now I know why. Service- attentive and friendly servers . They kept our drinks coming and checked in on our party to ensure we were okay or if we needed anything else . I never had to flag them down and it was busy . Food and drinks- the food was delicious not only was it nice and hot which means they didn't let it sit there getting cold. The food was perfectly done and every bite was delicious . Drinks were potent and amazingly extremely consistent which is hard to find with mix drinks . If you're in the Beverly area this should be a must .

randy d.

Yelp
So happy this place managed through the epidemic. Their happy hour is something to behold and take in--literally, a pitched of margaritas for $25-unheard of. Service is excellent. On the other side--their happy hour is confusing--you can only sit here, drink only here, food over there--AND--they dont seem too happy about serving during the Happy Hour.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
My family has been coming here for almost 10 years. We usually have a favorite server which we tip over 30% all the time. Came tonight and he wasn't there. No biggie. Server was a bit rude and rushed us. Never recieved our waters for the adults. Wings came after our food order which also took a long time. Tried making eye contact with server but was avoided each time. After we paid she saw our 10% tip and rolled her eyes. Also she was trying to charge us for chips and salsa which is usually free. Wont be coming back here. Sad that this place left us with a bad taste. Food was sub par at best as well
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
I come in with my daughter sometimes on weeknights, and the food is fantastic! She loves the chicken enchilada; I get an asada quesadilla, and we share nachos. The hot salsa's the best, and the mild and guac are good too. The hospitality of this place stands out. The servers are friendly and know what they're doing, and the owners are super kind to my daughter. It couldn't feel more like a family restaurant. We leave happy, and my kid's always asking to get enchiladas. It's not cheap, and I've never stayed for dancing or karaoke, but for great service and food I recommend it.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent! I had the chicken enchiladas verde and and Darren had the carne asada with a cheese enchilada. All was excellent! We shared a picture of Cadillac margaritas. Delicious! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Luis L.

Yelp
First time visiting came in as they opened up and my experience was great food was good service was ok overall I enjoyed my time here. Price wise I feel it's a tad high for the servings but it's not a big deal to be honest. Just ate here didn't have drinks so I wouldn't know how drinks are but I liked it and will be back check out the service and drinks in more detail.

Jerry D.

Yelp
My wife and I, native Angelenos, ate there this evening for the first time. Food was excellent as were the service and ambiance. The side dishes (beans and rice) which are only average at most Mexican restaurants, were also superb. Our mothers and abuelas would have loved this food! Lastly, the prices were very reasonable. We will definitely come back soon.

Tonya D.

Yelp
Food is very delicious! I enjoy the combo meals of enchiladas and tacos. Really tasty!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Food was so good and customer service I got the carne asada plate and queso fundido it was amazing. I loved their habanero salsa.
google avatar

Playa K.

Yelp
So sorry to say that this place has gone way down hill since my previous review. We used to love, love love it here and would come all the time. Shortly before Covid lockdown we noticed the sauces and flavours were different, and assume they got a new (not as good) chef/cook. We wanted to be supportive and hoped they would go back to the old recipes. But nope. We cut back our visits considerably as a result. (The food is terribly bland, and even the refried beans are not cooked all the way through!) Lately they started charging for chips and salsa. With the multitude of GOOD Mexican restaurants in LA, we're done trying to be loyal.
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
Average. I'm a huge chops / salsa fan, and their chips and "red" salsa were just o.k. / so so. However, the habenero type salsa was VERY delicious. Taco was o.k., although........hate to say it, meat was luke warm to cold. Chili relleno was pretty good, the cheese, excellent. Beans were very good with the right texture and flavor, as was the rice. Quac was o.k., but...... a little pricey at $8.00 for a small 6 -8 oz serving. Nice vibe to the restaurant and staff was very friendly. I'll be back to sample more menu items.
google avatar

Tiana C.

Yelp
This was my first time ordering from The Mexican Village and I was pleasantly satisfied with my meal. I was craving some fish tacos and the Fish tacos meal was exactly was I wanted, the tacos were tasty, the fish was nicely grilled and seasoned, and I love the pickled cabbage and sauce that came on it. It came with Mexican rice and refried beans and chips and salsa which isn't too spicy and tasted like it was made in house. I ordered via Uber Eats and my food was also neatly packaged in separate containers in came in large stapled paper bag. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, I will definitely be ordering more from here again.
google avatar

Tatiana R.

Yelp
We came here on Cinco de Mayo this is in our neighborhood we'd thought let's celebrate and get an authentic Mexican vibe. We've came to this restaurant many times since we live like 5 min away . The servers are very attentive I give the service literally 10/10 .We're often greeted by what I believe is the owner is is the sweetest every time very humble, bathrooms are always top notch clean which makes the experience way better!!! We had so much fun on convo de mayo they had a live mariachi followed by dancing and we lit it up! Met a nice older couple and just fell in love! I will say my absolute fav here above all the other Mexican restaurants I go to is the enchiladas like seriously better than the rest I recommend !

Deisy M.

Yelp
Best authentic Mexican food in town. The food and the ambience was excellent. We got to meet the owner Abel,, he and his staff was very attentive. Great customer service, really good cocktails and excellent food. I would recommend it and I will definitely will be back.

Valerie L.

Yelp
So desperate for Mexican food last night we decided to order from this place. The only real reason I docked a star was because the food lacked a bit of flavor. I ordered the nachos with pulled chicken and my bf got the green chili enchiladas. I love anything nachos related. Any place that has nachos I will order that over anything else. What can I say I'm a nacho fiend. With that being said I have some standards for nachos. The pulled chicken was cooked in a tomato sauce that didn't have much flavor. Also, there was not much any cheese or beans :( it really broke my heart because that's my two favorite components beans and cheese!!! I did however appreciate the utensils (i forgot to ask to include some) also the sides of guacamole and sour cream were packaged separately which was nice. The timing of the delivery was fantastic! It was almost scary lol it got here so fast but I'm not complaining lol. The complimentary chips and salsa were appreciated. But more salsa or different types would of been nice too. None the less it fulfilled My craving, but the best nachos ever search continues.

I love this place! Food you can't just find anywhere (chile relleno) and the staff are very sweet. I highly recommend the cucumber jalapeño margaritas!
