The 22 Best Restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico

"Open for: Lunch, dinner Price range: $$ Both a local bar grub staple and a biker outpost, the Mineshaft Tavern and Cantina gives visitors a taste of the Wild West, with wood-paneled walls and live music. Menu highlights include the mad chile burger, which consists of your choice of meat — including New Mexico-raised Wagyu beef — topped with both fried and chopped hatch chiles, aged cheddar, and chipotle dijonnaise. Appetizers are solid with other Southwestern goodies like tempura-battered fried green chiles, but skip the nachos.  Vibe check: Half of the fun of visiting on the weekends is sitting outside overlooking the main Madrid road, watching the leather-clad biker gangs travel in packs." - Karen Fischer

Mine Shaft Tavern – Madrid, New Mexico - Gastro Obscura

"In a town of about 204 residents, you might not expect to find the longest bar in New Mexico, but that’s just one of many unexpected features of Madrid. Pronounced “MAD-drid,” this former mining town may have been reborn as an artists’ community, but remnants of its history are pervasive. The Mine Shaft Tavern, originally opened in 1897 and rebuilt following a fire in 1947, features a 40-foot pine bar built for the miners to spread out across the space after a long day in the mines. The town’s watering hole features a tunnel leading to the front door, a rail train parked outside, and a mining museum on the property featuring a collection of historic artifacts. Both the bar and the town are rumored to host a few ghosts. Some say that it was Madrid’s role in providing the coal that helped fuel the secret home of the Manhattan Project that led to its haunting. Mine Shaft employees are generous with their firsthand accounts of ghost stories, and ghost-hunters frequent the location. Decorating the space are colorful vignettes painted by Tinkertown folk artist Ross Ward, as well as hand-decorated dollar bills lining the walls. It’s a custom for visitors to decorate a dollar bill while they’re enjoying a margarita or the award-winning MadChile burger, and then gift it to the bar to display. It’s estimated that there are thousands of dollars in decorated bills on the walls. Today, the Mine Shaft Tavern is a lively space that hosts bands on weekends, theater performances in its Engine House Theater, and an annual Christmas parade led by a yak. Google
Made the short drive to Madrid while visiting SF and it was worth it. A very historic and eclectic bar/restaurant with good food and drinks. The service was excellent and the appetizers were had were delish (we had about 4 of them, can’t recall which ones but we enjoyed them all). Would definitely recommend if in the area!

Google
This is an iconic and festive place filled with tourists in the daytime and locals at night! The historic bar/ restaurant has long sturdy hard wood plank flooring great for dancing and the food and service are top notch! The live music can be anything from local resident musicians to touring bands- you just never know what you might get, but it is all wonderful! The colorful and tight-knit locals are some of the most interesting and talented Ted people you will ever meet, so go ready to engage!

The food was delicious. The atmosphere is great. The service was OK, but it was worth the trip. I had the mad chili burger 🍔 and fries 🍟 my wife had the blackjack burger and the Caprese salad 🥗 😋. We did not stay in town too long. Just because it was full of bearded woman men, note to self never again will I go in June that's for the weirdos.

Google
Always love a good local experience. The wagyu beef mushroom burger was excellent, espresso martini delicious. Sara Dee was not only a great server, knowing I was low on gas in this rural area, she kindly helped me find the best route to the nearest station. Thank you. If you're passing through Madrid, dine here. Highly recommend.

Google
Really very nice place, good food and atmosphere. I had the pleasure to meet the bartender Hunter that talked a little bit about Madrid and paid me a tequila shot, he also introduced me to the famous Mad Dog. I had a great time with the friends that invited me to this trip. Very good.

Google
4.24.2025 - At the suggestion of the airport budget rep who assisted me, we left the Albuquerque, NM airport and headed straight to the Mine Shaft Tavern. He was so on point with the food. The hamburgers are amazing. It was a little drive, but This Santa Fe restaurant is a must. Our party of 3, truly enjoyed our meals. The food was excellent and the waitress provided great service. The area has a western/country/small town feel where the restaurant is located.

Google
Busy restaurant/bar main drag of Madrid. We sat outside on the patio- lots of bikers tourists outside =loud. Service was VG, food was was ok a bit overpriced for quality. Great wine pours and cocktails.

Google
Absolutely loved this place! Not just because many movies have been filmed here incl. Wild Hogs. The bar is the coolest period correct place with AMAZING food. I had the Waygu beef cheeseburger, only $18. Very friendly bartender. We were there at opening and it filled up quick, for good reason.

Yelp
Our lunch was perfect, breaded green chilies appetizer and margaritas were great starters. The green chili, cheese burger was perfectly cooked and tasty. Our waitperson was very friendly and attentive. Worth the short, scenic drive from Santa Fe.

Yelp
When promoting ChatGPT to generate a possible itinerary visiting Santa Fe, this place was recommended. It was a great stop, especially as the restaurant is connected to a an artist community. Hatch chile basket was a good start to the meal, lightly battered with ranch dressing. The mad chile burger is there staple and glad I went for it. Traditional burger with a hatch chile jam along with another tempura hatch chili. It really was a tasty burger with the quality of the meat coming through. Service was quick and attentive! It's in an old mining building, so that alone adds to the ambiance of dining room. Parking is difficult- be patient-we ended paying up the street.

Yelp
When we go to Madrid, we always eat here. We were seated promptly and then waited and waited to be waited on. They were not that busy on a Wednesday. We ordered chips and salsa and got the smallest 1/2 basket of chips and some very spicy salsa. The fried artichoke hearts was a minuscule amount of mostly individual tiny artichoke leaves and an about 4 partial artichoke 1/4's that had a very thick covering of batter and were incredibly greasy. It came with a tiny, tiny dish of ranch dressing. Two of the kids got large hamburgers and fries and were happy. I even took some home to the dogs. The other kid had the Mac and cheese and was very happy with it. The other adult had the chicken enchiladas with black beans and enjoyed them. I had the brisket sandwich. Someone in the kitchen needs to tell the chef how to slice the brisket and not just have random slabs and chunks hodgepodged together. It was in a brioche bun and I had the BBQ sauce on the side. I had to dismantle the sandwich to cut up and eat each bit of brisket. The coleslaw was sweet and creamy. When it was tine for our bill, on the electronic screen, you have the options of 18%, 25%, and more or custom. Sorry, but I think is pretty presumptuous. The service was far from great.

Yelp
I asked a local where to get the best burger in town, and without hesitating, he suggested Mine Shaft Tavern. He wasn't wrong. They also offer some of the tastiest Margheritas, too! The vibe is spot on for an old mining town in the southwest. The server was friendly.

Yelp
Fantastic green chile burger and nachos, with a couple of beers. Some of the best service on our trip. Definitely stop into this bar and see what films or movies you recognize here.

Yelp
The place is trendy, clean, and lively. Went with the parents and we enjoyed the Mad Chile Burgers. The food was fantastic! As for our server who wore black with red lipstick, thank you for your kindness towards the parents. Your service was great! You were attentive, polite and to top it off your smile was a beautiful compliment to the rest of you. I would totally recommend a visit for local flavor and hospitality!

Yelp
The ambiance is quaint and rustic Part of a former coal mine Dogs allowed, so we have our dog with us Monica was so wonderful! Great menu, full bar Indoor seating and lots of outdoor seating Madrid is a quaint little town with lots of shops and galleries The Mine Shaft Tavern is a must stop

Yelp
Tasty and enormous green chile burger with a cold local ale totally hit the spot after a day of hiking. Cool divey space with an interesting history, and our server was very friendly and had some good recos. My partner got the green chile burger but with buffalo, and said he preferred mine with the regular angus beef. We came by during an off hour, so we missed live music, but we left nice and full, and it definitely scratched our burger itch.

Yelp
After years of visiting Madrid, I finally got to eat at the Mine Shaft Tavern and it was worth the wait. I had the Blackjack burger - guacamole, pepper jack cheese, and bacon - cooked medium rare. It was the perfect level of pinkness and very flavorful. The fries were great, too. My husband had the special, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and calabacitas, which was excellent. The beef comes from a local ranch and you can tell it's high quality. Service was excellent and attentive. We will definitely stop here again.

Yelp
The Mineshaft Tavern is somewhat of a "right of passage" for traveling North 14! Located in Madrid, New Mexico, very expensive restaurant and bar offer plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well as dark mineshaft style seating. Well, I thought about being more creative in my menu section, my friend and I decided to go old style New Mexico and ordered the green chili cheeseburgers. My friend ordered the Angus beef. I ordered the Wagyu beef. Both were very tasty and filling!

Troy R.

Yelp
Please be mindful of surroundings while visiting.step mother and step sister there 3/28 for a couple drinks and to watch band, while there night cut short from locals that drugged there drinks. Only to wake up with bruising and no cell phones. Ruining rest of there trip, knowing something happened and having to go to Santa Fe hospital.owner keeps having this deleted because they would like to hide that people are getting drugged then raped from their bar

Yelp
I took a road trip to Santa Fe, and some of the ladies from my solo travel group suggested I take the Turquoise Trail and I'm so glad I did. I had no idea the movie Wild Hogs had filmed here, so of course I had to make a stop at this cool spot in Madrid. I had their spicy margarita which was soooo yummy, and their hatch chili burger was the bomb! I had the buffalo, and it was so delicious. Definitely in the top burger category. Their fries are handmade daily and were crisp and tasty. Service was a little slow because they were short staffed, but the server did her best. Not many choices to eat, but if you're in the area I highly recommend their burgers and margaritas!
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is a little ways off the beaten pad and you can tell because there's no internet service. Thankfully, they do have it at this bar and they post the password on the blackboard behind the bar. This place has lots of character starting with the thousands of dollar bills posted to the back wall behind their liquor bottles. There's vitually no AC here, just ceiling fans, 2 window units and an evaporation machine. They've got a full bar and a live music soundstage at the back. We started off with some drinks along with chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were very mediocre, but they make a good margarita on the rocks. The burgers are a big hit here. The service was good and we enjoyed our visit here.

Yelp
We went back, and had another great Green Chile Cheeseburger (Wagyu), which was excellent and cooked exactly as requested (med rare). This time I got an amazing fried chile on the side. I don't recall getting it the first time, but man, it's outrageous. Also tried the onion rings with the burger, superb! My wife had Fish and Chips, and it was excellent. Great quality fish, nicely fried and not at all greasy. We sat out again on the nice patio with the three dogs but it's getting too cool for that this time of year. But this place is super dog-friendly. Great service.

Yelp
This very popular haunt is great for both a meal or a drink. Our friends enjoyed the BBQ Brisket Sandwich, green chile stew with big chunks of smoked brisket, Mad Chile veggie burger, Shaft Brisket melt, and the very tasty Wagyu steak and cheese enchiladas with rice and black beans. Everything was tasty and nicely prepared. The service is good and attentive. The prices are very reasonable considering the large portions. Once you get past the grouchy hostess, you will be set for a good time!

Wendy V.

Yelp
So we decided to go with Mineshaft Oshkosh location and paid $28.99 which was absolutely rediculous. I saw online where Mineshaft advertised for $24.99 for Easter Buffet. I called this morning and asked why the difference...."oh that was for the Minshaft located in Hartford location Oshkosh was $28.99". Really. This is false advertising as they never put online that is was foe the Hartford location only! Not sure how anyone thinks this is ok to do to customers anytime, much less this terrible economy. I really feel ripped off! Plus we tipped 20%! Hartford location is better with literally everything! Had we known, we would have chosen the one in Hartford WI!!

Yelp
In New Mexico it's apparently very expensive to get liquor license for a bar but fairly cheap to get a tavern or brewhouse license. So we have a LOT of brewhouses that serve various formerly frozen foods with varying levels of service, prices, and assorted "brewed" alcoholic beverages. This particular one has ok food and ok service at prices you'd expect from a tourist trap. The ambiance is about what you might expect from a tourist stop with its name. I hear they have music sometimes but I've managed to narrowly avoid it any time I've been. Mad-rid, pronounced like that, is a destination out of town for motorcyclists and people cruising the various art shops in town. There aren't but a few choices of place to eat and this is one of them.
google avatar

Yelp
Was told by a colleague to have a burger here and was not disappointed. They had an excellent selection of local beers and our server could not have been any friendlier. I would recommend going with the fries over the upgrade to the soup.
google avatar

Tommy P.

Yelp
Great service (thanks, Natasha!). Pricey. Divey but interesting room with weak bathroom game. My "medium rare" "NM Wagyu" "Mad Chile Burger" was . . . rare, tending toward raw (see photo). It _was_ tasty, though. But . . . come on, it's a burger - raw isn't good - and it's not what I expect for just shy of a Jackson. Wife's brisket enchiladas were okay, but not really even up to "good" on the scale. Pretty drive here, of course. Decent parking on a Tuesday morning; wouldn't want to try it on a weekend.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool restaurant in Madrid New Mexico. Food was pub fare. Decor was casual and clean and a little quirky. It was on what I would say was the Main St of Madrid. They had live music in the afternoon. Lots of cute shops around.
google avatar

Lou P.

Yelp
The Mine Shaft was a pleasant surprise! We avoided it last year as it appeared to be a tourist trap. On our recent visit it was the only place open on a Tuesday, so, we went with low expectations. Wow, were we wrong. My green chile cheeseburger was one of the best burgers I've had in a while. Perfectly cooked bison, chile rellano, and avocado....if I could have eaten two, I would. Bonus points for great French fries! On our next visit to the area, we'll make a point of visiting. Extra bonus points for a server who was friendly, helpful and stayed on top of things.

Yelp
Main restaurant in the town. Fried chillis were very good. My wife and i had wagyu burgers. They were Excellent. My daughter had a gluten free pizza with zucchini. She said it was very good. Place was crowded. Their mixed drinks were good. Bud light was 5.50 a can. All beer was super high.
google avatar

Yelp
Place is so cool and has such a rich history to it! Cleo our bartender/server was nice the food is so good
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
The place is awesome to come visit! The service, atmosphere, and foot is great. I started with the mad chile margarita. There was definitely a little bite to it but nothing too bad. I then got the fried green chile strips. This were super tasty, especially with the ranch. Finally I got the Mad Chile Burger with Buffalo. This was juicy and tasty! It was topped with some chile strips as well which just made it better. I would definitely come here again!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're in town you know there's not many dining options....thankfully this place is very good. Friendly staff, and your typical tavern type feel. Fried Green Chillies were great, and the Buffalo burger was one of the best I've ever had. If you're in Madrid give this place a try

Todd S.

Yelp
Coconut shrimp app. 4 measly shrimp. $16. Are you kidding me? Staff didn't care one bit.
google avatar

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
AMAZING Green chili cheeseburgers. It's totally chill vibe with cold beer, great food, and great service
google avatar

Janay W.

Yelp
The food was fantastic and we got seated right away for our reservation. We were having a surprise party for my mom's 60th birthday. Everything was on one check and no one in our party was complicated or rude. However, we paid $1,100 and as soon as we paid the bill, they asked us to give up our tables and leave. I thought this was extremely rude and inappropriate, especially for how much money we just spent and also tipped our server. As a former server myself, this would have gotten me fired if I were to ever ask a table to leave. It put a bad taste in our mouth. Other than that, the food and drinks were very good.

David K.

Yelp
Went here for lunch 1st week in April 2025. Food and service above average. Ambience average. Somewhat noisy making it a little difficult to talk.
google avatar

Sherrill F.

Yelp
What a great little town! We stopped in the Mine Shaft Tavern for lunch, grabbed a pizza and beer...both delicious. Looks like they have live music here. Interesting place, friendly staff and good food. Worth the stop if in town.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
We had the BBQ brisket sandwich and the pork belly tacos. $34. The BBQ brisket was pretty good. It was made even better by adding the slaw to the sandwich. The biggest problem was that only a small amount of brisket was included. The pork belly tacos tasted more like pulled pork than pork belly and had zero crispiness. Also, they were very small will only a little bit of pork belly. These should have been an appetizer but definitely not enough for a meal. If you take into consideration the price with the quality and quantity this review should be 2.5 stars. But I'll round up and give the benefit of the doubt.
google avatar

Barbara P.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch on the drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. The ambiance and history alone (a fun old tavern) with friendly people working there is enough to merit a stop, but we also enjoyed our lunch very much. My husband got the brisket sandwich. It was not exactly what he was expecting -- it was more like a shredded beef sandwich rather than slices of brisket, and he said the sandwich was a little soggy, but it tasted good and he enjoyed it. I got a generous portion of pork stew which was very flavorful from the green chili and had some kick to it. It came with a toasted tortilla on the side -- a nice complement. For drinks we each got a draft beer. I got the Madrid Brewing Company Pale Ale and he got a La Cumbre Elevated IPA. We were both happy with our nice cold beers. We enjoyed the casual vibe -- people and their dogs and everyone having a relaxing time. There was some jazz playing on the radio which was a bit unexpected but also perfectly nice. Again, very relaxing. We totally recommend this place if you're in the area!

Yelp
Well, well, well! It's Beach Beauchamp, again. Y'all keep upping your game and I'm moving my husband and son here. Best damned burger in NM! Wait, "The Owl" San Antonio is tied for different reasons. They are both priced appropriately. The Mine Shaft Classic is it! Similar to "The Owl" with much bigger burger, more upscale bun. Therefore, worth price difference. Again, love'em both. Now call me queer, because I am, I scrape about half the chilis off and taste'em separate. Kudos to NM chefs who know their chilis. Well, again, like the queer Twerkinator "I'll be back!" Husband and son gave y'all 15 stars. Thanks for allowing us to speak Okie-Texan. Y'all translated beautifully.
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
Frankly, I was worried. Small touristy town. Historic spot. Kind of a recipe for average to ho hum fare. Boy, was I stoked to be wrong. Enjoyed my margarita, but seriously, a good margarita on a hot summer day to be enjoyed with a train engine back drop? Already starting out great. My Dad and I split a caprese salad and mushroom tacos and both were delicious! We cleaned our plates. I loved how the mushrooms were sauteed and the mozzarella with the caprese was really flavorful just on its own. Service was good and they handled my son's spill with humour. Nice view and a great atmosphere.

Yelp
Meyer lemon salad!!!!! Green chili cheeseburger (waygu) FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! It was a beautiful day to sit on the deck. Service was good and the food was even better. This is a must go again.

Yelp
June 4, 2023 - Mine Shaft Tavern and Cantina, (Madrid, NM) We were staying at an RV park in Cedar Crest on the Turquoise Trail (State Hwy 14) and decided to take a drive north. After about a 30 mile drive, we came to the neat little town of Madrid, pronounced MAD-rid. It's a one road town with a 20 mph speed limit. There must be at least 20 art and gift shops and a few restaurants over a quarter mile stretch. We'd driven by before, but it was so busy we couldn't find a parking spot. This time, we arrived a little before 11 am and things hadn't picked up yet. Madrid has a long history as a coal camp that began in 1835. It is the oldest coal mining region in New Mexico, and one of the oldest in western America. By 1894, the area known as "Coal Gulch" became Madrid. A company-owned coal mining town, it provided housing, a general store, opera house, hotel, amusement hall, post office, public school, and a medical department. It had had over 2,500 people. Workers were paid in script. The tavern didn't open until 11, so we did a little window shopping while we waited. We were the first ones to arrive at 11. We chose to sit on the cantina side where they have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at the covered outdoor patio. We were seated immediately and given menus and water. We ordered some chips and Guacamole and split the two brisket taco plate with rice and beans. Everything came out quickly. I found the plate to be pretty unremarkable. The beef was tender but was dry and had little flavor. There wasn't a whole lot of flavor in the rice or beans either. They should have offered us some hot sauce or salsa to give it a little flavor. I found some Tabasco sauce at another table and we added a big heap of guacamole from our chips dish to the tacos and that helped. Overall, I rate the Mine Shaft as a 5 for ambiance, 5 for service, 5 for lots of cool signs and historical artifacts, and 2 for food. It wouldn't be hard to fix the tacos, rice and beans, just add some more flavor and you'd get a five for that as well. I did notice that a lot of people were ordering the burgers and fries, so may that's a better bet.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
I mean if you're going to Madrid, you're going to go here at some point. This is the spot where you get your Mad Chili Burger-on, including that fried hatch chile. So the verdict?... it's damned excellent- really, really good. 5-star quality really... So then why only 4 stars?... well your staff shouldn't smoke on the dining patio. I mean no one should really, but especially not the staff. That's just rude...

Yelp
Stopped in Saturday for a pint and shared a green chile crab cake with a friend. There is so much room here and 3 levels to sit. We went to the bottom bar and loved it. I've never had a bad experience here and the food and beer selection is lovely - we had pints from Madrid brewing and enjoyed them. Its a great drive from SF or ABQ.
google avatar

Kayla V.

Yelp
The food here is amazing!!! I have been wanting to come here for years and we finally did! Best crab cake ever in NM and one of the best burgers I have ever had. The prickly pear margarita was amazing as well. We will definitely be back! The service was amazing along with the whole vibe of the place. Kitchen & FOH did an amazing job. Thank you again!
google avatar

Johnny K.

Yelp
Cool rustic bar in quaint little old coal mining town. Tasty burgers and cold beers to wash em down!

David K.

Yelp
Probably the best green chile cheeseburger in New Mexico! The MADburger. Cooked to perfection and served with a fried green chile and awesome home cut fries. This place has a great historic ambiance with classic country western music and a roaring fire in a large fireplace. What more could you ask for? Plenty of local brews on tap and a full bar.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Great Vibes, good food, always great music. The service is a little slow but it's always so busy so they get a pass. Just enjoy the music and not worry your drink hasn't been refilled.

Sam P.

Yelp
Great diner food. Mostly tourists and not many locals around. BUT it Is not accessible to anyone with mobility issues traveling on their own. Ramp is cobbled. Cars parked too close together to get past.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend recommended Mine Shaft and the Town of Madrid (pronounced MADrid) on our trip through New Mexico. Set in an old hippy mining art town. Listed on best bar lists as well as a site on Atlas Obscura. The bar and food is extraordinary. See pictures. The burgers are phenomenal and so is the craft beer list. What interesting is the artsy town influences the dive bar menu a bit with great vegetarian options alongside the veggie burger. Like a tahini tabouli salad for example. The fried basket of hatch chilis a must. The Mad chili burger is scrumptious and fun with cheese sauce, diced chili, a fried hatch chili and more. You can get regular beef, bison or vegetarian version of this. The green chili stew is a must also. See pictures. I'd love to be here at night :). The crowd must be cool as heck.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Madrid is one of our favorite places to go on a day trip from Albuquerque. This visit we hiked out at Cerrillos State park, then had lunch at the mine shaft. Always good food, and good drinks. I had the vegetable sandwich which was very tasty and prickly pear margarita. They had a band playing, mostly Tom Petty and other classic rock hits. People were dancing and just having a good ol' time.

Cindy Z.

Yelp
The food was good. Service was terrible because they were so short staffed. I would give it another try on a different weekend. To be fair, we went just before Christmas when the lights were on display so there were a lot of people in town.
google avatar

Vicki M.

Yelp
I would have given a 5 star but there was a large blonde waitress that had a nasty attitude and a nasty tone ... I'm just thankful she was not my waitress or i wouldn't have gotten to eat there. Our waitress was exceptional and i wish i knew her name. The Mad chili cheeseburger was absolutely delicious And the fried green chilis off the appetizer menu was worth the wait to get there The mad chili margarita made us order a second one because it was so good This was a destination for us because of the green chili burger on our drive to Santa fe but i left with a bad taste in my mouth because of that large blonde waitress and her tone

Yelp
No motorcycle trip along the Turquoise Trail is complete without a stop here for lunch. Today was no exception. Nice day and lots of motorcycles out. Not much of a wait, drinks come fast as does the food. I don't think I've had a bad meal here. Mad Chili Burger is my favorite. Loads of green chili and great flavor. But you don't have to be on a motorcycle to enjoy a plate if great food here.

Yelp
My traveling companion and I came here for an afternoon cocktail while our wives were shopping in town. Marisol was our server and she was great, helpful and we got into great conversations with her before our wives came to join us and liked the quesadillas. The margaritas were good as were the onion rings. It has a great atmosphere, had WiFi with a password and looks like it would be a fun place to go at night.
