"Probably the most diverse bar in the Castro, the Mix is a favorite of famed LGBT rights activist Cleve Jones, among other longtime denizens of the ’hood. The pool table up front tends to attract some serious sharks, while the patio in the back is big with smokers. Drinks are stiffer than stiff here, generally, and it is not uncommon to find gaggles of new friends shout-talking in circles over a smoke on the patio after their third or fourth round." - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater Staff

I've always enjoyed The Mix. Bartenders are always friendly, and it's a fun relaxed atmosphere, especially on the patio. I've gone here for years and this is one stop I take friends when they're in town. This review is to give a HUGE shoutout to Marissa. My friend had a medical event on a Saturday night as they were really starting to get crowded. Marissa was masterful in remaining calm, controlling the crowd, delegating actions from other staff members, and communicating with me and my friend. She also worked hard to make my friend comfortable until an ambulance arrived. This is never something you expect to happen when you're having a night out, but I'm so glad it happened with someone like Marissa there. Thank you for being a stellar human being.

I had the WORST experience at this bar. The guy at the entrance was super rude. We’re not from here, and we got a drink at the bar. The bartender first gave us a regular cup, then switched to a plastic cup when he saw we were leaving. I wasn’t analyzing it much, but my friend went out of the bar, and I followed him. I wasn’t trying to break any rules, and when the guy from the entrance saw me, he said, “Oh no, you can’t do that.” I immediately went back in and apologized. That’s when he literally pulled me, grabbed my drink from my hand, and threw it in the garbage. I’m like ??? “Why did you do that? I just paid for my drink. I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” He then starts screaming at me, telling me to “go somewhere else” and “you are not thriving,” among other things. Seriously, what’s wrong with this service?!? Why in this would would he even touch me? Mistakes happen, and not even a cop would have treated me like that! I feel totally disrespected and discriminated against. This is unacceptable, and I need a follow-up on this incident.

Google
The bar where everyone knows your name. Friendly staff and clientele. You can go alone or with friends, either way, you're guaranteed to meet new people! Go and enjoy yourself. You are guaranteed a good time here.

Google
THEY HAVE A PATIO!! Favorite spot in the Castro, hands down. Very friendly vibes unlike some of the other places, and I’ve always felt right at home, even though I don’t drink

Austin Knight

Google
The door man at this location should stay home. He is there to ruin people's night and think he's the deal. Lol wow. We ain't getting disrespect from a freaking door man. Ahuh ahuhn. Bye Felicia 👋 look all our 1 star rating. Your door man has been doing a great job every week 👏

Google
Staff was incredibly rude to my friends and I. Apparently that kind of behavior from bartenders is pretty common at this bar. Don’t go here expecting a safe or good time. Plenty of way better bars around Castro as well to spend your money on.

Google
Great neighborhood bar in the heart of The Castro with a very relaxed vibe. Friendly bartenders making stiff drinks! Popular open-air patio in the back is a nice surprise. Well behaved dogs are welcomed here and will most likely get a treat from a bartender!

Google
Favorite gay bar in SF. Love the back patio. Always a great crowd of people. Fun on Sundays

Yelp
A friend recommended this place and it was so much fun! The bartenders were so amazing and we had great conversations with them. Our group got a variety of drinks like tequila shots, topo chico, martinis, jameson beer (?) and some others. Music was amazing and the vibes were good. Lots of seating available inside and they also had a back patio. The restrooms were a bit interesting bc they were kinda exposed. We stayed until closing (2 am) and it was a great time -- would definitely come again!

Fabiola B.

Yelp
Our favorite bartender So I am a foodie and a bar lover since I bartend myself.. It's tough to find a place where you just fit in and they're right to say that the bartender makes the ambiance. This woman ALWAYS makes us feel like she will make whatever we want and super comfortable ! Love it! We will keep coming back! Thank you sheree

Yelp
I've been coming to this bar for years, but recent experiences have raised serious concerns for me and my friends. On two separate visits, friends of mine became severely ill shortly after having drinks here. While I can't definitively say what caused it, there was no clear opportunity for anyone outside of our group to touch their drinks. We tried contacting the bar to address these issues but were dismissed with the manager saying "I asked the staff, nobody knew anything about it" and had no follow up. If I were the manager of a bar with multiple people reporting similar issues I would be seriously concerned. I'm sharing this in the hope that others remain cautious and aware when visiting. Unfortunately, based on these experiences, I don't feel comfortable recommending this place anymore.

Yelp
I remember when this spot was called Uncle Bert's probably around the start of the millennium. It was a more rambunctious and disheveled place. Or maybe it was me who was more rambunctious and disheveled back then. It all blurs together in what's left of my brain. Currently it's more of a standard grade Castro gay bar but with two separate bars. The second one is outside in the back patio where most of the regulars congregate amid the permanent holiday lights. The owners refer to their establishment as "The Neighborhood Bar" on the awning, and it fits as most of the customers know each other and the veteran bartender quite well. I just sidled myself up to the main bar and ordered one of their $7 drinks (photo: https://yelp.to/OvmIsy4ZKD). It can get a bit loud and somewhat crowded during Happy Hour (no 2-4-1 though), but what I really appreciated was the huge restroom with multiple urinals available. Unfortunately the sink is adjacent to them, so depending on the gender and availability of the person washing up, there could be awkward furtive glances exchanged. Or you could get lucky. Who knows when you're in The Mix? DRINKS - 3 stars...a bit on the weak side but reasonably priced AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...big on rainbows here SERVICE - 4 stars...pleasant and busy TOTAL - 3 stars...what's in The Mix? Yelp
Pretty sure the bartenders just...spike drinks. Multiple times I came here (bottled beer for me) and the person I was with (cocktails) blacked out quickly: not slurring, not drunk, just suddenly not logging memories, being extremely confused, and needing to immediately leave and sleep it off.

Kyle K.

Yelp
Shireen is the best and kindest bartender I've ever interacted. She deserves a raise! Thank you for making my night amazing

Adam S.

Yelp
I can say with utmost sincerity that Sheri (Cheri?) makes the best Bloody Mary in this whole damn city. She makes me happy every time I talk to her and makes my drinks super pretty, and delightfully tasty. This on top of the fact that The Mix never ceases to bring a great series of moments and conversation without a doubt.

Alexis P.

Yelp
Thank you for the Mexican gal who served us tonight! You were professional and your kindness was absolutely made our night! You made us feel seen and wanted when 440 gave us attitude for using our Apple Pay! You had such a great attitude and I hope you stay here! We absolutely adore you ! We will come back just for you!

Athonia C.

Yelp
#lifelogue: joined by duv (@plugh), & shannon for or a little soirée at our fav, low-light, chill-space. I can't think of a better way to spend my after than w/friends in this dark, hideaway. Only thing is: bloody mary mixture has anchovies. if you're vegetarian or vegan you may not want this. For me they were willing to make one from scratch. Horseradish might have egg too. Just sayin. They might be surprised at seeing the check in offer presented so be prepared for a confused look from the bartender. #OneLove #LGBTQ

Yelp
Such a cool bar. It has multiple rooms including an outdoor area. The ambiance here is amazing, and it can get a little packed at night but in the winter that just makes it cozier. Also a bar with multiple rooms and reasonably priced drinks! Can't wait to be back

Deneb T.

Yelp
Mix is one of my favorite spots to go , especially on a Friday or Saturday night and a great spot to meet amazing people! The workers, except one, are great, they're so friendly! Also the reason why I love coming here on weekends because everyone is so friendly. I can only speak for what I've experienced here, I know others may have some unfortunate moments. Only downside to this establishment is that the bathroom! if i tell you it reeks, it eeefenn does and it's unbelievable! I cannot stay in there for more than one second. Even if you're drunk the smell will slap you sober. Drinks are punch you in the face yummy! You'll know what I mean if you've been here before. For others who hasn't, be cautious ;P but it's a good thing, less $$ to throw down on a weekend.. I'll be back Mix!

Michael S.

Yelp
Don't know if this is actually a "Gay" bar, or just a bar filled with a lot of really awesome people who just happen to be gay, but hey, it's the Castro, soooo, what in god's name do you expect!? HA! We rolled up here pretty early, I dunno, maybe around 13:00 or so, after getting kicked out of a restaurant for drinking all their mimosas. Something just doesn't sit right with me, and maybe it won't sit right with you - let's find out: "Bottomless mimosas....... 90 minute limit." Like, what?! I mean, don't get me wrong, I can do some work in 90 minutes, but c'mon, I don't wanna have to pee every 6 seconds, AND the place wasn't even packed, or freaking busy at all for that matter. Just a butthurt manager (haha, butthurt. Castro. Nice.) Anyway, that's a different review. So yeah, The Mix. Place is super dope, with a pretty big inside, maybe? Don't know, was pretty drunk and we were OUTSIDE ON THE PATIO, YO! Which is infinitely awesomer than being inside. Everyone there was a blast, as they usually are when you're at a gay bar! See you there! :D

Yelp
NOT A SAFE PLACE. If you are looking for a good time do NOT come here. Very unsanitary. My friends and I felt very unsafe here. The large short blonde haired lady bartender was extremely aggressive and made others and myself in the room feel very uncomfortable. My friends and I are visiting from out of town and came inside to get one drink and check out the inside.. she got very upset and told us basically to leave because we all weren't ordering a drink. Out of the 4 of us only one person drinks. I will not be returning because of that bartender. We also watched her cough into her hands and continued to serve drinks. We definitely won't be returning to this location.

Jacob D.

Yelp
Another local watering hole. Relaxed comfortable environment; however, drinks are horrible and overpriced (9 bucks for a tall house vodka cocktail). Could barely sip 1/4 of my drink and had to leave it behind.

Yvonne I.

Yelp
A group of friends and I stopped in while walking around the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to grab a table outside and stayed for about 2 hours. It was pretty busy when we were there, but not so much that you couldn't walk around inside. We encountered a lot of outgoing customers during our visit. I originally ordered an old fashioned, but switched to margaritas afterwards when I noticed how many people were drinking them. Margaritas are definitely the way to go here. The old fashioned was good, but the margarita was a 9/10 without a doubt. I try not to come down too hard on bar/restaurant bathrooms (especially at a time when many places may be short staffed), but the bathroom here was gross.

Yelp
Sadly I can't say anything good about this place my husband and I went last night around 9 and I was so excited to go but unfortunately won't be going back the guy at the bar was rude didn't great us and instead of telling us the bar was closed he walked up to us as if he was going to help but puts a sign saying bar closed and walked away with a attitude and started talking to other people.I was so confused of why the attitude. So we just went to Dick bar much better service

Rhea A.

Yelp
First time out here in the Castro with no plans, legit just walking around. This place had their door open so naturally we peaked inside and heard BANGERS - Stickwitu by the Pussycat Dolls. Sold. We came inside and got seated fairly quickly. The bartender (Manny) was sooooo GREAT! My boyfriend and I had no idea what we wanted to drink so we asked Manny for recs. Manny suggested the strawberry margaritas because they have a special recipe. Let me tell you... I had 3 of these margs and I was borderline black out central. (I am also just this small girl so a few drinks for me will do it.) Manny knew exactly what to do with these drinks!! On top of all this, the ambiance is a good time + the mix stays playing straight bangers. Ranging from Destinys Child to Ne-Yo to all the old throwbacks. Its such a fun time. Manny's the best and I'm so glad we decided to come here. It's a fun time and it's still COVID friendly!! Tables are spaced out. Can't wait to come back here.

Yelp
This bar is located in the Castro District and bars out here have VERY generous pours. Met up for a friend's birthday on a Friday night right before midnight and parking was pretty difficult, you can drive around the main streets or the some of the residential areas nearby but I had a hard time finding parking and had to park a little farther out. Anyways, I went the end of January 2022 and they checked for vaccination. They have a small inside area, gender neutral bathrooms, and they have a nice outdoor area. They play music, have screens, and they have such generous pours! We were shocked with our round of tequila shots. The bartenders were super friendly and a great place to grab a drink!

Alan H.

Yelp
Great bar in the heart of the Castro. In the front is a cost bar with ample seating and tables. In the back is another bar with an outdoor patio. The crowd is mixed and leans toward gay men. But you'll see women come with their gay male friends and are welcomed. Let's are also common. Check out the daily drink specials. They have a good selection of on tap beers. As well as free wifi.

Erin P.

Yelp
I came in on a slow Thursday afternoon. Immediately could tell the middle aged bottle blonde with short hair bartender's attitude changed when my friends and I walked in. We were told not to stay long. I thought it was really weird considering that there was so few people and with the overall energy of the bar being quiet and boring, they could've used any business they could get, especially since considering the unwelcoming atmosphere.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Friends and I came here walking around Castro because I wanted to stop for a quick beer but they don't drink alcohol. Mind you it was mid afternoon and very few people in the bar so it shouldn't have been an issue. I ordered a beer and the lady working at the bar gave us the worst attitude about me being the only one ordering a drink. Took her two seconds to hand me a can and I still tipped her well since I work in the food/drink industry and live off tips. She even told us not to hang around if my friends weren't going to order something. So we did not. I drank it as fast as I could and we left. After reading other reviews it made a lot more sense. I've never felt so uncomfortable in an establishment like this in my life. We'll never be coming here again and I wouldn't ever recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable space or common human decency from staff. The place was also filthy.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
I'm going to be as fair as I can be on this one. I had my wallet and phone stolen from the back room of the bar tonight. I know I had both in the bar because I paid for a round of drinks in cash. Pulling out my money probably set the alert that I was a good target. I recommend making sure your bags are closed and valuables are not left hanging on chairs or wallets in your front pockets. Crimes of opportunity are tempting for patrons here. The drinks were okay. Standard and strong. The ambiance was great; the music was excellent and the patrons were fun as hell. Would I come back here? Yes Am I totally pissed about tonight with little help from the bar? Also, yes. I am wondering if the bar has surveillance footage? I had a Santa hat on, was standing at the far corner of the back room bar, and this all happened around 10:30. This should be easy to trace if you have footage.

Ciaran M.

Yelp
First experience here and will be my last. Bartenders were horrendously rude. Couldn't even enjoy our brief time there aside from the staff as the place was grimy. Staff were also seen being unsanitary. Don't even think about going to the bathrooms. I've never seen a restroom so foul. And that speaks volumes as we were in San Francisco. I also ended up getting sick after coming here most likely from the unsafe conditions.

Mukul P.

Yelp
Good bar, best part is that it's open until 2 am. It was very crowded when we went there, but managed to get some seating. I wish there was more space to dance!

John L.

Yelp
Food: Pussy popper: this was a drink. It was amazing! I could barely taste the alcohol! It was like a spiked lemonade but like better. Strawberry margarita: I think I preferred the pussy popper but u definitely liked this drink as well. Mood: The vibes here at this bar was so amazing! I loved this bar. Everyone was really nice. The only parted I hated was needing to wait to get in but they were at capacity so understandable. They played so many bops! Absolutely phenomenal. I would definitely recommend this place and would come back again! Service was a little slow but they were crowded when we went. Everyone was having a nice time vibing

Duv M.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the drinks and attendance here. Prideful bunch who were social and welcoming. Bring a crowd!

Knight S.

Yelp
The mix is my favorite bar and love that they are a neighborhood bar that is relaxed, content, and swell. Great place to play pool, games, go out on the patio! Love this little bar. So glad it survived after Covid! Cheers!:)

Paul R.

Yelp
Like most businesses the mix was also affected by Covid. Gone is some of the nostalgia from the front room. It lacks character. I liked that it had a pool table and fun game machine my cousin and I use to spend hours playing. So that patio area gotta reboot it still seems like a fun area. The best things are the cutest bartenders. The guy something my drink have the cutest butt. The guy in the back patio would make my husband heart melt

Martyn F.

Yelp
Great service and good welcoming gay bar. Great mix crowd. Friendly atmosphere

John P.

Yelp
Honestly I don't know why people like coming here so much? It's very crowded, gets too hot, and the drinks are kind of nasty. I think the only good thing about this place is that it has a community feel and the music isn't bad. Midnight sun or toad hall is better than this!

Katarina A.

Yelp
I came to this establishment yesterday with one of my friends and we got drugged. The bartender only served us two drinks and we left almost unconscious. The vibe of the place seemed fun but it seems that this space is not a safe space for women to enjoy their night. It really is such a shame because this was my attempt to try a new bar on the castro. Will not recommend this place to anyone.

Ashley B.

Yelp
This bar took such great care of me after being treated so poorly at 440, another bar in the Castro. Thank you so much to the staff and the people here at the Mix for treating me with kindness and acceptance. Thank you for understanding inclusivity includes queer women.

Gabi K.

Yelp
LOVED this bar, honestly such chill vibes, good drinks and good people. Everyone is so accepting and loving, it was truly a beautiful thing to witness. The happy hour specials are dope as well, although I believe they only take cash.

Hannah L.

Yelp
Not a safe bar for women Went out to celebrate pride and within only a few minutes of getting into the bar a man repeatedly grabbed my girlfriends body. Cornered and harassed us when we told him to stop. He name dropped security and one of the bars owners as his friends. Threatened to have us removed if we didn't let him do whatever he wanted. Another man who tried to deescalate and get between us confirmed that the guy was definitely friends with security. We got out thanks to those who stepped in for us. Won't be returning.

Sara Y.

Yelp
I got here around 7 and the place was filling up quickly! Inside is narrow with a pub like feel. In the back they have a small but cute patio area with some seating. It's a nice spot to get some fresh air. We got a table and some drinks, I had a gin and tonic. The drinks were average price for SF $10. The drinks are so heavy on the alcohol though they are basically un-drinkable. I wish they just put my gin and tonic in a larger cup with a better ratio. Since it was still super early when I was there (7 to 9pm) the line for the bathroom wasnt crazy. They only have 2 stalls for everyone so I imagine it gets super long. Overall, not my first or last choice of bar.

Jason P.

Yelp
The pandemic has affected us all in so many ways. In my opinion one of the best variables has been that there are more women behind the bars of Castro . As a gay man I have always respected the role that women have play d in the ‍ community . I am really happy that the mix is adding more women behind the bar . It's so good to see pillars of the community like Sloan back behind the bar. Sometime take a moment and ask Sloan about some our history! It's great to see our neighborhood opening up again ! I am so happy to see so many women being part of the expansion!

Oyundari A.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place but I had some issues. We were here on Saturday around 7. I want to say that it feels great that the bars are finally open and we can enjoy our time without any restrictions. Positive things I would mention are friendly bartenders, nice vibe, the pretty patio and affordable drinks. I was disappointed that I couldn't use the Yelp coupon. I got the 50% off first drink coupon when I checked in, so I tried to use it but the bartender wasn't sure what it was. It's not a big deal but if there is a promo, it is nice to be able to use it. The drinks were already fairly cheap so I didn't mind. Gin and tonic tasted terrible (avoid) but the whiskey sour was okay. I'm not sure if I'll be back because there are many other places that have better drinks and I would rather pay few dollars more for good drinks.

Jessica J.

Yelp
The back patio is cute, but the front is pretty lackluster, however the 5 stars comes from the fast service on cheap as hell drinks with dangerously heavy pours. My vodka soda was $6!! Great place to start the night!!!

Marissa S.

Yelp
I had an epic happy hour here. Surrounded by the happiest people on earth, we left all our cares and worries at the door and partied it up like it was 1969. The place looked and smelled like it was from that era- divey for short. The drinks were stiff and dirt cheap. G&T for $4? Hell, yeah! We hung out at the back outdoor patio with music blasting and people mingling. It felt like a house party as if everyone knew each other - until a little fight broke out between two girls but they instantly got kicked out. Everyone cheered thereafter and went on with the party like nothing happened. Gotta love this neighborhood bar and Castro, of course. Cheers!

Sarah R.

Yelp
Do not go here. When I was here, someone reached into my purse and stole my wallet and phone. The thief used my debit card at the bar while I was still there, and ended up buying $690 worth of booze in the span of 30 minutes. In addition to my horrible experience, one of my friends went here a few years back and was drugged by the owner of the bar (or at least, they introduced themself and told my friend that they were the owner of the bar). The owner brought my friend a drink, and were insistent that my friend drink it. Mind you, this was their 2nd and last drink that night. After that drink, my friend was blackout drunk and had to be carried out. Going through the other reviews, I see that other people have also been pick pocketed and drugged by the staff, so it seems to be a pretty common occurrence. I will never go here again, and will be sure to warn others to stay away from this putrid place.

Cody B.

Yelp
I used to love coming to this bar, but they really need to hire front door staff/bouncers with actual social skills. In the last two years I have avoided this place because of rude door staff with trash attitudes. After another visit today, I do not appreciate anticipating coming to a business to spend money and have a good time only to be disrespected and looked down upon by it's staff. Everyone in the community deserves to feel welcomed but I guess this is not a place for many. I was greeted with rolling eyes, and didn't even bother ordering a drink before walking right out.

Alec N.

Yelp
I love the mix and had many special moments there when living in San Francisco, I even got engaged there and met my husband there... BUT Sloan the blonde haired female bar tender is sooooo sooo rude and aggressive it is unbelievable! She kicked me and my husband out because my husband does not drink and she said we both had to drink to be there "why go to a bar if you don't drink" she said. Answer being I was drinking, our friends that were going to meet us were going to drink and further more alcoholism is no joke and should not be forced on anyone in any way. Sloan has known me as I have been going into that bar for years and for her to try and pull something like that is just down right rude, disrespectful and shady as all hell... If she's so angry where she is then she should consider a new field. IF IT WERE NOT FOR SLOAN I WOULD BE GIVING A 5 STAR REVIEW!

Chih Yen L.

Yelp
Terrible service, we were in line for like an hour. I got it due to the pandemic, but there were two parties of four people behind us got in before us. I really don't understand how it worked, and they didn't explained to us. Bad experience ever.

Jeremy T.

Yelp
Pop in for a drink and meet ya friends for a chat. No bells or whistles just a spot. The drinks were alright for the price I was hoping for alittle more but, I guess that's just the city.

Trevor P.

Yelp
Bartenders are incredibly rude here. Don't bother with this place. I know I won't be going back .

Michael F.

Yelp
We had a lot of fun at this bar. The drinks are reasonably priced. The bartenders are professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Caution: the drinks are pretty strong. We had a Mai Tai, Lemon Drop, and Cosmo. The drinks run from $8-12 each. The drinks were strong, but had good flavor.

Miriam W.

Yelp
I am highly susceptible to clever marketing ploys. Take this super creative idea I recently fell for at Mix: a sign. Yes, a sign near the bar with a picture of Henry Weinhard's Root Beer (my favorite root beer!) The moment I saw it I wanted one. The rest of the boys ordered cosmos. . .but I was firm. Then Sean, who was buying the first round, walks back from the bar and hands me a rocks glass. I am puzzled. Where is my dark bottle of Henry Weinhard's Root Beer? Turns out the bartender has given me a root beer shot? What the heck is a root beer shot? When I took it back to the bar and pointed at the sign that got me craving the root beer in the first place he begrudgingly got me my bottle in exchange for that nasty shot. Moral of the story? If you want a non-alcoholic beverage at Mix you better be loud and proud about it or else you might get stuck with a root beer shot.

Allen W.

Yelp
This bar is a great place to come during Covid-19. They ensure that every table is spaced properly , while still creating an immersive experience. The music is amazing and they make the drinks strong. Also in terms of Covid safety they make sure everyone has a mask, is sanitized and temp checked upon entry. The bar tenders are always friendly and accommodating. Great place for POC to feel welcome.

Sandy C.

Yelp
I love how this place is just chill. Cheap drinks, pool table out front, and a large outdoor patio with plenty of seating in the back, where you can drink and smoke to your hearts desire without being hassled. It's also open during the day if you're looking for a spot to pre-drink before the other bars/clubs open. Cheers!
