The Modern Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

"The Modern is really two different experiences: the bar, and the dining room. The dining room is a beautiful, formal space overlooking the MoMa garden with a three-course prixe fixe menu. It’s fine dining for sure, and it’s incredibly good. The bar area is quite a bit different - it’s more relaxed, with an a la carte menu of share plates. You can get a seat at the counter, grab one of the low two-tops (which are frankly a little awkward if you actually want to eat), or even get a real table - all with the same A plus service as the formal dining room, even if the food isn’t as impressive. But really, this side of The Modern is best used for martinis after the museum, or fancy pre- or post-dinner drinks at one of the only great bars in Midtown. photo credit: Ellen Silverman The bar area is quite a bit different. It’s sleek, more relaxed, and on a good night, you’ll find some Action at the Bar. The plates are smaller and a bit more restrained, but you will still get A plus service and have a decent meal. We like the bar just fine, but what it really comes down to is this: That James Beard award didn’t get handed over for restraint and small plates. Chef Kruether is rocking a new neck accessory because of what’s happening in the dining room. It’s a top notch restaurant, but the bar can be a bit hit-or-miss, and if we’re doing it fancy, Eleven Madison park is more our speed. Food Rundown Hamachi Tartare The bar version of this with some radish and yuzu is fine, but what you want is the tartare in the dining room that comes served with a thin slice of watermelon. That’s where it’s at. Upside Down Tuna Tarte A tuna tartare, but with a thin, crunchy pastry sitting on top. Pretty tasty. Saffron Tagliatelle A nice, delicate pasta, though I expected this to have more flavor than it did. It’s fine, but it’s also an example of why you’re better off spending your money in the dining room. Homemade Alsatian Country Sausage Probably the best thing on the bar menu, this is an incredibly satisfying home made sausage. DBGB, take note. Dry Aged Strip Loin Sliced thin and served over spaetzele, this is an awesome bar menu option. Long Island Duck Breast We had some west coast duck at Eleven Madison Park a while back, and it was mind blowing. There is usually some duck on both menus at The Modern, and you should be eating it. Red Beet Risotto Ok. There is gold leaf in this dish, which is something you’ll see on a plate every once in a while in The Modern dining room. I would normally take this opportunity to make some sarcastic Goldschlager reference, but will skip it this time - just because this risotto is so good. Loup de Mer A really nice, light filet of Loup de Mer, a white fish. This will come with various things on the plate, depending on the season. I think ours had some mushroom action, and maybe a clam." - Katherine Lewin & Chris Stang

As a wedding photographer, The Modern is one of my favorite venues to work at. This chic and contemporary loft space is a photographer’s dream, with sleek lines, stunning architecture, and plenty of natural light. The private jet runway view from the expansive terrace creates an unforgettable backdrop, and the unique features like the custom chandelier and walk-in wine cellar add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any celebration. The layout is versatile, offering ample space for both intimate moments and large gatherings. The lounge and bridal suite are perfect for capturing pre-ceremony portraits, and the modern design provides endless creative opportunities. Whether it’s the cozy seating or the chic bar area, there are always beautiful details to highlight. I highly recommend The Modern for couples looking for a stylish, unique venue with a touch of luxury.

What a lucky bride I am! The Modern was truly the most beautiful place for a wedding. My husband and I got married this past October and have a special place in our hearts for the staff here. Abel, Mary and her bar and catering team. We had a customized buffet menu and signature drinks for the bar which were phenomenal! Brides, please understand that there will always be minor hiccups in the wedding industry. You may feel anxious in the beginning because you have many questions and concerns, but trust me the staff care about you and will reach out. Abel is now the main venue contact so you are in good hands. Thank you for your patience and kindness. Also, special thanks to the young lady at the bar with the glasses. She was on point with the drinks for our wedding. Much love to the whole team! You're family now. -Kenzie and Damond

We had our wedding at The Modern and it was nothing short of amazing!! A huge shoutout to the incredible Abel, who went above and beyond to make our day seamless and stress-free. His organization, quick response time, and warm personality made the planning process enjoyable and ensured that everything ran smoothly on the big day. You could tell he truly cared about making our vision come to life, and we are beyond grateful! Mary and the catering team were equally outstanding—our guests are still raving about the delicious food! Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor, making the dining experience just as memorable as the rest of the celebration. If you’re looking for a wedding venue that is simple yet stunning, with top-notch coordination and exceptional catering, this is the place! We highly recommend it to any couple looking for a magical and unforgettable experience. Thank you so much to The Modern for making our wedding day dreams come true!!

I recently got married at The Modern this past September and it was the wedding of my dreams! The Modern was the second venue we visited and we couldn’t stop thinking about it during our search. We loved the chic, modern feel of the space. The white blank canvas along with bright greenery made the space the perfect place where my vision can come alive. The venue comfortably accommodated 130 guests and was perfect for a smaller wedding. The venue had a lot of floating shelves which I loved because it made it easier for decorating and designing the area. The chandeliers and the grand entrance with the stairway made it a really unique space that fit our vibe. We went through a few venue coordinators throughout the process, however, when Abel (the current coordinator) took over, the communication became very stable! We really enjoyed working with him. He was very attentive and easy to work with! We did have a few hurdles towards the beginning with inconsistent communication and/lack of follow ups. However, communication improved towards the latter half with everyone involved as we approached 2-3 months prior to our wedding day. With this venue, we used The Modern’s bar/catering services. The Bar was a hit - we got many compliments on well the drinks were made. We also had our own customized drinks and a mocktail named after our dog. Many guests made the mocktail alcoholic which was such a good idea! Some of the food we selected for our dual buffet entree were a little dry the day of, however, many guests LOVED our late night snacks which were angus & chicken sliders with tater tots! Overall we were so happy with your special day at The Modern!

RANT INCOMING - READ BEFORE YOU BOOK Let me start off by simply saying that this review is NOT to take away from the venue itself or the catering. The venue is GORGEOUS, with great views, a great setting & versatile for different types of photography, with optional access to the airport hangars for an additional fee on behalf of their preferred vendors. Additionally, Mary at Catering is INCREDIBLE. She’s well-mannered, respectful, shares the details with you & is the GREATEST COOK EVER. So for clarity, those things I’ve noted are exempt from my 1-star review. Where things go south, is where many others also share their grief and conflict. Abel, the on-site coordinator, is a NIGHTMARE to deal with. In the meetings, calls and appointments leading into the day of, one thing I can share is that he is VERY communicative and responds in a very timely manner. We never found ourselves waiting more than 24 hours for a response, other than the weekends, when they had events booked at the venue. Apart from that though, he was & is an AWFUL person to deal with. Almost every encounter, every message, meeting & phone call resulted in at least ONE moment where his horrible attitude and condescending tone was on FULL DISPLAY. I can have AT LEAST 10-15 guests that can pour into this review within their own experience on the ACTUAL wedding day. He was disrespectful in his treatment towards guests. We understand that this venue is STRICT; we are FINE with that. However, it’s one thing being strict & another thing being outright disrespectful. I have vendors, band & sound techs that were present that ALSO let me know of their negative experience with him. You couldn’t ask him a simple question the day-of without him being short-tempered & dismissive. Refused to make simple adjustments. Even during the breakdown post-reception, he was disrespectful towards my guests and vendors. The venue & catering was pretty pricey, which we were fine with paying since we REALLY wanted to hold our wedding here. Even after the reviews we read, we gave it the benefit of the doubt. You would think that after paying as much as we did for 70 people, he would be accommodating, respectful & kind to our guests and vendors. I strongly believe he needs to take a background role & they should really consider having a more welcoming person assume his position. He micromanaged, demanded & policed every single person on our wedding day and made COUNTLESS guests uncomfortable with his character. We couldn’t even move some lounge furniture for photography purposes, without him moving everything back before even getting the photos & mugging us with a negative look. Even worse, his attitude when Mary (the owner) was around was completely different! Quiet, reserved, respectful. When she wasn’t there - an ENTIRELY different persona. To make matters worse, my wife was in the mechanical room upstairs awaiting to make her entrance. Abel himself admitted to my coordinator after that the room hadn’t been swept in 3 WEEKS. She severely stained her dress prior to walking down! We have pictures & witnesses as well that CLEARLY noticed the staining as she made her walk down. When I addressed it with him after we got back from our Honeymoon, He lied and said my coordinator said it was just “dry dust.” However, that was a lie. My coordinator had to take her shirt off, wipe as much as she can & fix the dress inwardly, to hide the staining as much as possible. We called her about it & said he was being dishonest. He refused to comp us for the incident and instead blamed the tarmac we were on, when in reality, we kept the dress unraveled because it was already a lost cause anyway. It costed us $300+ to get it cleaned up. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I can’t & will NEVER recommend this venue to anybody, literally just because of the experience with Abel. As mentioned, I can 10-15 people MINIMUM that can attest to their experience with him. Avoid this nightmare; take your services elsewhere. To Mary : me and my wife absolutely LOVED you. We’re sorry if you find yourself reading this review.

I had a Celebration of Life at the Modern. Abel and Mary made that event pretty much seamless. There was a mix up in communication on the start time of the event, which did cause some consternation, BUT both Abel and Mary rose to the occasion and, in the end, the event was perfect. A stunning setting AND the food was wonderful. I am originally from the Chesapeake Bay area, so my standards for Crab Cakes is pretty high. But the staff at the Modern presented us with some crab cake sliders that rivaled my mom's crab cake recipe (not as good, but pretty darn close). The food and the service from the bar keep, and the servers was first rate. I would highly recommend the Modern and it''s staff for anyone considering a special celebration. Thank you Abel and Mary (and the staff)!

Our wedding was a perfectly executed dream come true that was orchestrated by The Modern, and its wonderful team led by Abel and Mary. My wife and I discovered The Modern during a special event right before I proposed, and we knew that if we ever got married, this would be the place. Following our engagement, we had a tour of the place with Mary, and we were 1000% convinced with the place since Mary came with the package lol. The communication throughout the course of our planning was outstanding, and both Abel and Mary addressed all our inquiries and concerns without hesitation and with clear answers. While the conditions of the contract initially seemed rigid, all guidelines and expectations were stated clearly, and both Abel and Mary provided all the support necessary to ensure the vendors understood and executed per the contract accordingly. All terms of the pricing were transparent, and we found the costs to be worth every penny, as we were 1000% satisfied with the venue. Through the course of our two-year planning, Abel and Mary were available and offered the walkthroughs necessary for the vendors and us to plan accordingly and execute an impeccably perfect wedding. Mary did an outstanding job and exerted so much patience with both my Wife and I through the course of food and drink tasting. She assessed our preferences and perfected our specialty cocktails and food menu to reflect my wife, our guests, and I. We appreciated the opportunity to host our rehearsal brunch at their Kitchen and Bar located below the venue. Our guests enjoyed getting a small taste of the delicious food and drinks they'd be having the following day at the actual wedding. The day of the wedding could not have unfolded so perfectly, both aesthetically and logistically. Abel and Mary coordinated and collaborated in unison with our group of vendors, and they really outdid themselves by providing the foundation to our dream wedding, literally. They did an amazing and efficient job at flipping the venue space for the reception. All while our guests were enjoying themselves in the lavish lounge during cocktail hour. The venue itself is perfect. It is very modern, clean, spacious, classy, and their furniture and greenery were the perfect accessories necessary to complete our wedding day. And that's not all. The VIEWS are one of a kind as the venue has an entire wall space made up of windows that overlooks Long Beach Airport and an outdoor terrace that allowed us and our guests to enjoy the views. We literally had airplanes flying up and down during our entire wedding, with a grand exit of us flying off in a helicopter. My wife, our guests, and I cannot believe how perfect the entire day turned out. They will not stop raving about how perfect and beautiful everything turned out. From the food to the drinks and the wonderful bartenders, and of course to how magically, beautiful our wedding was. None of which would have been possible without the fantastic venue, Abel, Mary and their team. While we are saddened to turn the chapter from the wedding planning and wedding, we are so so so happy we chose The Modern. The Modern and team will forever be embedded in our hearts and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Mary, Abel, team, and The Modern!

Yelp
We found the modern on instagram and was astounded by its beauty. After we took a tour at the venue, we've decided immediately this is the dream place where our wedding should take place! Mary the owner greeted us warmly and answered all the questions we have not only in person, but also through emails in a timely manner. The catering and bar teams at the Modern are also super nice and professional! We emailed them quite a list of the dishes we wanted to try for tasting and they prepared them all! The food was amazing (and even more delicious on the day-of). Our guests kept complimenting how tasty our signature cocktails were. The service was awesome everyone was polite and nice. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice modern look venue for your event!

Yelp
The venue is beautiful. It sits across from Long Beach airport. Has a good view of planes taking off. The unpleasant part, so many rules, no food Togo containers (a lot of it went in the trash or else where), they closed balcony door at night, and can't bring in own food but doesn't serve drinks till 6. The centering food choices are questionable Costs thousands of dollars to be restricted to the minimum.

Yelp
The Modern was a great "find". Just attended an event and it was outstanding. Great floor space for dining and dancing. Had a nice bar, stage for entertainment. Clean , fresh ambiance. Restrooms located on the same floor for convenience. Plenty of parking. Nice option for weddings and special events . Check it out.

Yelp
Lovely venue for moderately sized events, with a great view of the airport runways from the balcony. Attended a company party, which most people thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were very nice and polite, except for the venue manager. He was unnecessarily rude and condescending towards the vendors, the hired entertainment, and the guests. He kept zooming around, policing everyone and making people feel uncomfortable with the way he approached and talked to them. He literally would get all up in people's faces. We were there from set-up time to pack-up time, and nobody conducted themselves in a disorderly or undignified manner, yet he kept conspicuously shadowing the people who frequented the open bar. He even kept shooing the people hanging out on the balcony to take breaks from dancing and take pictures with the backdrop of parked jets. If you didn't want people on the balcony of the actual event hall, lock the door. He was the one factor that ruined an otherwise wonderful evening.

Yelp
The Modern is so beautiful and was the perfect setting for my wedding, however, that's unfortunately the only positive thing I have to say about it. Gianna & Mary were the only pain points throughout my ENTIRE wedding process. Their unprofessionalism and overall disrespect was not only shocking to me, but also my family, guests, and the vendors. Gianna & Mary both have a reputation of not being very nice, and we unfortunately all fell victim to their behavior. From not responding to me for over 1 year, having to follow up over 4 times to confirm requests, misplacing insurance papers that I had to find for them days before my wedding, not logging my confirmed rehearsal (that was confirmed for over 1 year), and being rude via phrases like: -"You're putting me in a really hard place." (After a mistake that their team carelessly made.) And via situations like: -Being rude to my vendors, hushing my family to "be quiet" as someone was getting massaged at a spa within the building on my wedding day. (If the spa was really concerned about noise, I doubt they would rent a space within a building that not only hosts a wedding venue, but a building that is at an airport with planes actively and noisily taking off.) Although I cherished their hopeful moments, the bad outweighed the good. Just to name a few. The Modern is incredibly amazing, but I hope this gives everyone a heads up of what's in store if you sign the contract.

Yelp
I attended a wedding at The Modern this past weekend and I thought it was a very cute space. The wedding had about 160-180 attendees and I thought it was a good sized space for everyone. They use the ceremony space and flip it into reception, while everyone is moved to another area for cocktail hour. During that period, it does get a tiny bit cramped, but I guess that makes for good mingling! The space has kind of a rustic feel to it, not as rustic as a barn, but I guess I was expecting something different since it's called "The Modern". The ceremony started at 5:15pm and we got a gorgeous view of the sunset in the background. Everything was nice and clean and it was a very cute and quaint wedding overall. They have one restroom for men and one for women (with 3 stalls in the women) and there was never a line! There's PLENTY of free parking in the parking lot and the venue is incredibly easy to find (it's just off the freeway).

Yelp
We're writing this review for the Modern and the excellent service we received during our wedding.  The venue was beautiful and lived up to the amazing pictures we saw online.  The view of the airport from above was gorgeous as we watched the planes and helicopters fly in and out.  The feel has both contemporary and classic tones that make it right for any taste.  The entire venue has a very classy aura as you make your way from room to room.   I had a special connection to this venue as I obtained my pilot's license there as my home airport.  As my fiance and I looked at venues initially, I noticed they all looked good and had a certain allure. The Modern, however, with its clean, classy, look along with the cool factor of watching awesome and expensive planes roll off the tarmac made it a shoo-in and hands-down the #1 option in our book.  I would recommend the Modern as a great venue for a wedding and greatly appreciated our time there.

Sarah W.

Yelp
My two stars is for the venue itself, which is beautiful and in theory a great venue for a wedding, but I would not recommend The Modern as a wedding venue to any of my friends or family. A venue is the biggest vendor that a wedding couple chooses, and the staff/management at The Modern were difficult to work with. In my opinion, that makes the venue not worth it to hire over another venue that may not be as beautiful, but will be kind, efficient, and accommodating. My main issues: * Communication: The Modern were very poor at communication. My husband and I often had to follow-up 2 or 3 times before we got responses from them. I'm not talking about me following up after a day, I'm talking like a week in between follow-ups. There is absolutely no excuse they could give where that type of lagging response would be justifiable. No other vendor took more than a couple days to respond. I attached two examples of the kind of follow-up we had to do before we got a response from them. * Kicked out guest: One of our family members was asked to leave the wedding because they had consumed a lot of alcohol. She wasn't dancing on tables, she didn't break anything, she wasn't picking fights with anyone. She was just taking advantage of an open bar, where they could have stopped serving her at any point. This was not brought to our attention by ANY of the venue/bar staff at any point during the wedding. We only found out afterwards from gossiping family. We had to call our guest and apologize and even offered to give their gift back because we were so embarrassed at how the venue treated them. There is absolutely nothing in our contract stating under what conditions people can be kicked out, and I don't think anyone would want a guest treated that way without their consent or knowledge. * This last one is a small gripe, but the Modern contract states we have a 30 min rehearsal the Thursday before the wedding, and when we were scheduling the rehearsal, they only gave us 10:00 AM or 10:30 AM as optional time slots. On a weekday. Half of our wedding party could not attend due to work, the other half graciously took the day off, and even my wedding planner, who has planned many weddings, stated she never had a rehearsal scheduled early like that. The contract does not indicate that they only allow morning rehearsals, and should do so for the wedding party and couple to make arrangements in advance. If I had to do it all over again, I would not have picked this place. I do not feel as though The Modern cares about their clients. A wedding is such a special day for many couples and families and they should be treated with care and attention, which I don't feel we were.

Yelp
I'm a a realtor, working right next-door, and was extremely surprised by how pretty the location is but most importantly, how great the food is. They always have great soups, great sandwiches, great salads and great service.

Yelp
From the second my fiancé and I walked into The Modern we knew we had found our venue. Our theme was timeless/classy and you don't get any thing less than timeless and classy from this venue. Mary, Robin and Rebekah were amazing to work with. Mary was so kind through the whole process and the day of the wedding staff was so friendly and attentive. My husband dropped his fork on the floor during dinner and asked for another one and they brought it immediately. Then he dropped it again a few minutes later and without even asking for a new one the same young waiter handed my husband a new fork. My fiancé and I chuckled and the waiter smiled and said "I heard it fall." We couldn't have asked for a more perfect venue and perfect day. Mary also gave us suggestions on our HIS and HERS cocktails based on our likes and they were a hit. We got so many compliments and were told by numerous guests that it was the most beautiful wedding they had ever attended. The Modern is a must see when looking for your venue. SIDE NOTE: The hangar is also a cool place to take photos. It's an additional cost but so worth it.

Yelp
I am so glad my fiancé and I picked The Modern as our venue. From pre covid days and throughout the entire process of postponing to us now only two months away from our wedding Mary, Robin, and Shannon have helped us through it all. They have kept us up to date on all communications and had amazing referrals for other vendors. They allowed us to tour numerous times and were just obsessed with the overall layout and design of the space. I cannot rave about The Modern enough. We just can't wait to get married here. Thank you for everything!!!!!

Yelp
As I arrived to my appointment at the modern I was greeted by Abel we had just gotten in the elevator. The door hasn't even been closed when I asked him if the rate was just for a flat doesn't matter the number of yes and then he said yes, we were thinking about 70 guest and the venue was 9500 for 150. It stated on the email that I received from Abel so I wanted to question him if the price might've been a little bit cheaper if the guest count is lower he then said no then I immediately said well this might be a little bit too much for us , but right then and there he wanted to degrade me and my partner and by saying this isn't the venue for you guys mind you we haven't even looked around or anything like that he didn't even try to sell us on the venue then he was being very disrespectful he wasn't even The venue didn't show us the venue when we were asking him questions about the venue he had his back to us looking out of the window them completely disengaged in the conversation did not want to explain to us the venue his body language is completely shut down as if he wanted to get us back in the elevator and leave And then, when I asked him who was his manager who was in charge of him he said he was the owner of the modern when I looked them up he's a real estate agent and then he said he was on sales so I would definitely would not recommend anyone to go to this venue. This guy is just trying to make a bug he doesn't care about anybody's feelings. He doesn't care about your special moment he doesn't care about anything From my experience having to drive, thankfully not that far to see the venue I would not recommend this place whatsoever to anyone looking to have a great experience shopping around for their perfect wedding venue and I took videos and unfortunately I'm not gonna be able to post them, but I will keep for my records, and it is just very unfortunate that Abel Decided to treat us this way he was trying to escort us out of the venue didn't want to deal with us because I simply said to my finance this might be to expensive he just stood around telling me I emailed you the listing price already like just not professional

Yelp
My husband and I selected this venue because of it's unique and modern look. The space is beautiful and the different spaces make for a great experience for everyone. The lounge was the perfect space for our cocktail hour and our guests loved the outdoor patio overlooking the runway and planes, some even got to see planes landing. We booked the venue back in 2019 for a September 2020 wedding. Due to Covid, we had to reschedule twice and Mary was very helpful and understanding. As we finally got to the final details stage of the planning, Mary was awesome to work with, especially when we met for our signature cocktail tasting. During the reception, Mary and her staff always checked in to make sure we had everything we needed from food to drinks to anything in general. We are so happy we selected The Modern and we loved every moment of our wedding.

Yelp
The location is perfect and close to the highway and the venue itself is beautiful. However, the staff was very rude and security was also rude to the bridal party during some confusion as to who was on the list to come up the elevator prior to ceremony. God forbid the couple accidentally leave a couple people off- they have a lot on their minds and sometimes things skip through the cracks. They are not flexible to work with and have maaaaany rules and regulations where you might as well not ask the question because the answer will be "no". We (me, the bride, her mother, the florist, and caterer) were under the impression that we would have 1.5 hours to flip the space to reception only to find out that they won't even move chairs/tables until photos are done. The tarmac and ceremony site are the only areas for photos so we ended up having 40 minutes to flip the space for 150 people which of course took a little over an hour to do and the rest of the night was very rushed because of this. I asked for a coke at the bar and was told I couldn't have one so so that also just goes to show how inconsiderate and unbending they are. Very disappointed with my experience here

Yelp
The ceremony was beautiful but the staff was inconsiderate and just completely rude. I would not recommend having your wedding here if you want good service.
