10 Spots for Bourbon Cocktails in and Around San Francisco | Eater

"Inspired by Belgium public houses, The Monk’s Cellar is a comfortable place to enjoy house-brewed beer, hearty sausages, or a steaming bowl of moules frites. A Bulleit Bourbon is the perfect accompaniment to their excellent beers on tap; the Biere Blanche, a Belgian-style witbier, is bright and citrusy, and an easy-drinking partner to Bulleit’s bold, spicy character." - Vox Creative

Had a great time at The Monk’s Cellar. The food was absolutely delicious…every bite was packed with flavor and just downright YUMMY. Service was solid too, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I tried the Belgian peach beer, and it was very good: light, refreshing, and full of flavor. I was a little bummed that the raspberry one was out of stock, but that just gives me another reason to come back:) Also, shoutout to the bathroom for having a unique painting lol Only wish they stayed open a bit later, would love it if they were open until midnight. But overall, a fantastic spot. I’ll definitely be coming back!

My wife, and I came Saturday around 2 pm. Sat in the patio area ( big mistake). Usually we get decent service after the lunch rush. Yes they not busy, but our server was the worst. The food and support staff were good hence the two stars, but the waitress was rude, and was not interested in serving us for some reason. We had to ask for everything. She would not even pick up the check that was ready. She walked over to chat with the host since she would rather do nothing than serve us. My wife wound up having to pay cash since the sever who was 10 feet away and did not want to process our check. She still left her a decent tip even though I tried to not. Our second visit, and last. Not planing on coming back ever since we felt very unwelcome. Decided to give one star instead of two since the service was painfully slow, and we’re not going back….ever!

Google
Real cool little place with interesting dishes. I had the pork belly and sausage dish which came either duck fat French fries and a small salad, was delicious! Also sat in the patio with my dog and several others, cool they are dog-friendly. Great view watching all the interesting people walk by l, and the service here was great as well.

Google
Went in on a Friday — liked the vibe of the place. Service was fantastic. Ordered a few rounds of beers. For food I ordered the Reuben fries because it read like a romance novel of tastiness (corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, & Gruyere cheese over duck fat fries) which was good. Not addictingly good but went nice with the West Coastin' IPA. A friend ordered the Cottage Pie and said it needed more seasoning.

Google
Cool look inside with all the wood. Good beers. The monk burger was great. Very attentive and friendly staff. Would eat here again.

Google
Croquettes are delicious! Came with 6. Garlic and parmesan duck fries are delicious! Curry fries with sausage was good. Scotch egg, good but 1 egg. Not nearly enough for the price. Chicken vol au vents was loved by all around the table!!! By far our favorite in terms of taste and quality and size. Came with small salad and fries. Vibes were immaculate. We had the monks cellar pearfect mates, pilsner, Alley ale, and todays cider special of the ube blueberry cider. Wish I tried the hard kombucha.

Google
Atmosphere was great. This place was highly recommended however we felt the food was lacking. The croquettes were good. The steak dish was cold and chewy and overcooked more well done than medium well, the fries were overly salted but we waited so long for each item to come out we were just hungry and ready to go. We enjoyed sitting outside for drinks. We would come back for the old fashion and possibly to try other menu items in the future to give it another go.

Google
Made reservations for 7pm, we arrived on time and our table was ready! We requested a regular table but received a high top which was kind of annoying but we didn’t let it ruin our night. They were very busy and the vibe was very upbeat. We started with soft pretzels, they were soft and salty, the cheese dipping sauce was great. We ordered fish & chips and the fried chicken sandwich (only available on Saturdays). Both were great options. The duck fat fries were crispy and delicious. We will be back to try burgers next time.

Yelp
I held my wedding rehearsal dinner here in the back! It was the perfect space as it wasn't exactly a "private" room but there are curtains that gave us a feeling of privacy from the rest of the restaurant/bar. We had a pretty limited budget and this was an excellent option! They had vegan options which was perfect for my family and they really enjoyed it! I also love how they set up the food for us! It was SUPER aesthetic which I don't expect at all and was super appreciative of it.

Yelp
I've been coming to Monks Cellar for a few years now and wow!! The food is incredible, my fave appetizer is the pretzel! The bar tenders are amazing and always make anything I've ordered great. The whisky options...10/10! Recently I went for Oktoberfest and had so much fun! Definitely will be returning for the music and vibes again!
google avatar

Lisa X.

Yelp
My friend and I came by for dinner. She previously been here for Oktoberfest. Very lively place. We opted to sit outside, have some non-alcoholic beverages, a couple of appetizers and enjoy the nice weather. We had the following: *Jake is a non-alcoholic cocktail - really good. I enjoyed the citrus flavors. We later found out this was named after our waiter and another non-alcohol drink was named after his wife. So cute! * ATLÉTICA Copper - my friend wanted another non-alcoholic brew but was accidentally given this one. She didn't like it. It wasn't to her taste. *Large Pretzel - served with spicy mustard and pub cheese. Good and really big portion. *Croquettes - Mashed potatoes with roasted jalapeño, crispy bacon & cheddar cheese. They were tasty! *Scotch Egg - Soft-boiled egg wrapped in ground sausage & breadcrumbs and fried. We both like this. Delicious! *Duck fat fries - traditional. I accidentally ordered traditional even tho we wanted the Parmesan & Cheese one. We were both a tad disappointed that we didn't taste much Duck fat. Overall, lively place, good vibes, friendly and chill servers. Located on Vernon and Washington Blvd.

Yelp
I had a plowman's dinner tonight. With baked Brie. The fruit in the middle is pickled; blackberries with a hint of clove, candied walnuts. It was tasty Friendly service. Quiet and cozy, but lots of space too. Impressive drink list even with NA options. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
This review is based solely on the beer at Monks Cellar. I did not try the food. This is a restaurant but they also have their brewing setup on display inside. Very cool vibes but more upscale than a typical brewery. I stopped in around 7:30pm for a few beers and ended up grabbing a flight. It's not on their menu but they can do taster pours for about $2-3 each. After my initial round of tasting, I really enjoyed the dark Mexican lager with great toasty malt flavor and the pale ales were also great. I decided to try out their barrel aged beers as well. My god, this is where they shine here. The barrel aged sours here are incredible. Some of the best I've had. I ended up talking to one of the restaurant partners, Paul, and he told me about their open fermentation system and unique white wine barrel that they've used for years to barrel age Belgian classics. This is a MUST TRY in Roseville for any true beer lover. Get the barrel aged stuff. I head the food is good too!

Yelp
We were out looking for a happy hour and decided to stop at Monks since we had not been there for a while. We sat at the bar and I was looking for a cocktail while hubby wanted a beer. I ordered the I Love Scotch, Scotchy, Scotch, Scotch and it was tasty and interesting. I ordered the Croque Madam with duck fat fries (they have the best) and hubby ordered the grilled cheese and soup. Both were delicious. Tried a 10 Years of Vernon to finish out the meal. The bartenders are always friendly and knowledgeable about their cocktails. Staff are always helpful and friendly.

Yelp
We hadn't been here in a couple years and I forgot how GOOD it is. I definitely recommend making a reservation as they fill up quickly during peak hours. The inside is a welcome change from normal industrial modern restaurants. It boasts more of a cozy pub feel but it bursting with laughter and conversation from guests. We got the croquettes to start which were melt in your mouth delicious. The craftsman sandwich was crunchy and flavorful at a great price point. The fries are just insane. Like almost criminal. Hands down best French fries you'll get any where. We have been talking about them ever since. Their cocktail and beer list were both excellent. Our server was super friendly, attentive, and even had a great conversation with our 7 year old which made him feel extra special. They do have a kids menu which makes for a wonderful family night out that both kids and adults can enjoy. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Let's start off with the service. When you go, you need to ask to sit in Nicole's section. My goodness she was the one of the best servers we have ever had. She always had a smile on her face and listened when we talked to her. She made our experience here absolutely wonderful. Thank you, Nicole!!!! The restaurant looks small but it is long! Nicely decorated and the bar is cute! Now the food. We have been here twice and both times we have ordered the Scotch egg. If you have never tried one. Do it. The flavors are delicious and pairs so well with the garlic aioli, pickled onions and arugula. It also comes with a horseradish type sauce, I am not of fan of horseradish but my husband said it was good. We also tried the Monk's burger. It comes with arugula, the pickled onions with a side of garlic aioli. Freaking YUM. Their fries are interesting, not my favorite but only because they seem to be oddly hallow in the center..? Not sure if it's because they are fried in duck fat or what... nonetheless, they are good. I also enjoyed a strawberry fields tequila drink that is very refreshing and not overly sweet. Hubs got the arbitrary beer and he thought it was delicious! Last time we ate here we had the craftsman chicken sandwich. That was also to die for. This place knows how to do their food and their staff is stellar. If you haven't been here, go. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Stopped at this restaurant after a day at the winery with the family. We had a big group and we're looking for somewhere to accommodate the size of our group. The service was excellent, we had multiple people, checks that had to be given out, and the waitress was spotted with everything. They made sure our food and drinks came out promptly, and the food was really good. I do suggest the blood orange margarita. We will definitely be back to try other food options.

Yelp
Okay so I been wanting to come try this place out forever. Inside is all wood tables a bar nice open space with a nice heated patio . They also have more seating areas towards the restrooms . We were there about 20 mins after we got seated and no waiter had come to our table to check on us . I had to ask my host I was not being rude I just let her know we had not had service yet . She was very kind and said she would get someone. We finally got a waiter to get our drinks I asked for water a few times through the night I was very thirsty. I had been at the park all day with my kids games . There was one point I had to go ask the bar for a cup of water. I felt bad doing that and the waiter realize that and brought all of us water, but that wasn't until we were already eating our food. I would think water would be the first thing a waiter would bring or ask if we would like. We were also missing napkins and other things like our burger not being spit . Our waiter was super nice. I just think attention to detail was not there. For food- The croquettes were very good . The tri-tip French dip the meat was very chewy . The American hamburger was very juicy and delicious. I was not a fan of the beer they had . The cocktail menu didn't catch my eye so I told our waiter if they could make me a white Linen he said yes but when I got my drink it had no cucumber not sure what it was but it was not a white Linen . The ambience is a tough one. They are right next-door to Goldfield, which there was a concert that day. It was really loud in there because you could hear the concert and on top of that you could hear everybody talking. Overall I think this place is just not for us but I know some people enjoy it . This is just my experience that day.

Yelp
Ambiance was great!! The food... not sure what the attraction is overall. The eggs were good, but the steak at $30 a plate is highly over priced!!! The first bite and it honestly was like chewing leather. Was NOT tender. The taste was ok. But the meat was terrible!! We spaghetti squash was good, but hard to mess that up. Furthermore, it took an hour once we ordered the food to get the food. The waitress made sure to keep our water glasses full. Just don't think I'll visit again.

Yelp
First time here for lunch and it won't be the last. I've been running on fumes with work lately--just one of those seasons--so I'm not sure I enjoyed this as much as I could have under better circumstances, which is the only reason I'm not taking off a star since any lack of enjoyment was purely on me. That said, this place is solid. Cool vibe, great service, and the food hit the spot. I almost went for the Scotch Egg appetizer but wasn't quite in the mood. Ended up with the French Dip sandwich (delicious and hearty) and the Duck Fat fries with garlic and Parmesan, which were just as indulgent as they sound. Portions were generous--we left happy and full. Looking forward to coming back when I'm less stressed and can give the menu (and maybe that Scotch Egg) the proper attention they deserve.

Yelp
Food was amazing and reasonably priced. Probably one of the best pretzels I have ever had. My favorite was the Reuben fries- so delicious! My picky daughter also enjoyed the croque monsieur which she requested the sauce on the side so it was pretty much a ham and cheese sandwich. Hubby loved his fish and chips and my other daughter enjoyed her burger. Their duck fat fries were crunchy and so flavorful. I would definitely go again. Lots of cocktails and beer options. The plump up the jam cocktail was so good- refreshing, packs a punch, and not so sweet. My perfect flow.

Yelp
Came here for lunch to catch up some college friends and enjoyed the vibes. Food-wise everything was ok with some room for improvements. The best thing we ate was easily their duck fat fries. Honestly probably some of the best fries I've had in a really long time plus they have solid ranch. For my main, I got the schnitzel sandwich. I couldn't really taste much as it kinda just tasted like the fry oil. Maybe it needed more aioli but I thought it was lacking seasoning, probably wouldn't order again. My SO got the tri-tip salad, and the meat was chewy. Good portion sizes though for under $20 a dish. The cocktails and shots we got were tasty, and the service was good. The restaurant was clean and spacious with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
TL;DR - Food was eh, service was great Food - 2/5 Service - 5/5 Price - 3/5 I came in with my wife and friend early on a Saturday evening. We had reservations, and we were seated promptly. We started with the large pretzel, croquettes, and the scotch egg. The large pretzel wasn't anything special. My wife is the pretzel snob, and she said it was by no-means anywhere near one of the better pretzels she has had. The croquettes were pretty tasty, however the taste got redundant. I was the only one eating them. If I were to only eat one or two, then I think it would have been more appetizing. The scotch egg, on the other hand, was okay. I wouldn't order it again, but it was decent. It was nice that the appetizers came with sauces and pickled onions to change the palate. Everyone ordered different burgers. I chose the Monk's Burger and upgraded the fries. The burger was okay at best. For as much that was in the burger, it was really lacking flavor. I don't know if the meat to everything else ratio was too much or what, but I wasn't impressed. The saving grace of the whole experience was the service. Our server was great and very attentive. He wasn't too overbearing but checked in just enough. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great, as well. Part of me wants to give the place another try and see if it was just an off meal. I'll have to update my review if I ever do.

Yelp
First time here and I was impressed. Unfortunately, I had just missed happy hour because it ends early before 5. They have an extensive beer menu but I ended up trying one of their signature cocktails called The Sundress. It was STRONG but not overpowering. I found it very refreshing. My friend and I shared a plate of duck fat garlic parmesan fries which were amazingly delicious. They came out hot and crisp! If you are a garlic lover like me, I would definitely order them. I really appreciated the customer service that are waitress provided. We had a minor hiccup with our initial round of fries turning cold quickly and it was quickly resolved. I will definitely be back to explore more of their menu.

Yelp
Visited on a Thursday around 1:30Pm and it was very quiet. Because we had our dog with us, we were seated in the covered patio next to the street. Given how dark the interior is, I think the patio is a better option, weather permitting. The place is really a restaurant that brews its own beer, which can be seen inside from viewing windows into the brew area. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and had some good recommendations on both food and beer. The food was tasty and paired well with our beer flight. All of the beer we tried was clean, tasted correct for the style and represented a creative range to satisfy most peoples preferences. They also have a full bar and a whiskey club. All things considered, it was a solid experience that we will visit again.

Yelp
Been planning on coming here since July 2023 when I bid on a Beer and Cheese pairing they donated to the Make A Wish foundation. It was worth the wait. First we were given a tour by the head brewer Christian. Christian was fantastic and you could just feel the enthusiasm, joy and passion as he shared his knowledge of brewing beer with us. After the tour we did our Beer and Cheese pairing. Now I've done a lot of Wine and Cheese but never Beer and Cheese. I was really surprised how well the cheese paired with the beer that they chose to pair. It was a fun experience. We decided to have dinner after the pairing. I had then scotch egg and a nut vegan burger. The scotch egg was a little over cooked but tasty. The burger was interesting. You could definitely taste the seeds and nuts that made up the patty. It was different, tasty but not something I would probably order again. Someone else ordered the sausage plate and shared a piece of sausage with me.... Very good sausage. I'm ordering that next time. The place has a welcoming, classic brew pub feel. Nice seating area outside and lots of room in side to either hang with a big group or have an intimate conversation with someone. Oh and I can't forget the beer. They have some really tasty beer. My only regret is forgetting to buy some to take home with me. I was told they only distribute locally in the Sacramento area so I guess I'll be going back to get me some beer. My two favs: the Pride of Felix and the Lidska Moucha. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Incredible menu. Something new to try every time I visit. Their beers made in house are excellent. Incredible whiskey selection as well! Service has always been great. Tuesday night trivia as well if you're looking for a fun time. I prefer relaxing on the patio most of the time.

Yelp
We've been here a few times and my family loves the Monk's Cellar. We make up every excuse to come visit. We got to visit on a colder day so I went with comfort food and finally got the cottage pie. My husband got the Reuben fries. SO SO good. Every time we come in the menu is updated and is unbelievable, the service is awesome and we will be repeat customers for sure.

Yelp
TL;DR very good, could be better, but you won't complain about your food. Another place that had been on my list of places to try that happened to fall into place this past weekend. The wife wanted to see this long black hard engine names Big Boy in DT Roseville so off we went. We came hungry so went for it.....Menage Tois or whatever 3 onion burger thing, fish & chips, and the French dip. We also got 4 different beers. I don't know if we've been fein'in for beer but I haven't had this good of a beer experience in a long time. I think the last time was Moksa when every beer I tried was great. We got the Broken Pieces (Pils), Rooted With (Belgian Blonde), Lidsla Moucha (Amber), and the Heavy Robes (Barleywine)...all were great. I was most excited to try their burgers as there is a local celebrity in the Roseville area named Bobby who is like some sort of Burger phenom and this place is his favorite.... I gotta say, as far as the burger itself (the meat) it was probably one of the best I've had in my life. It was actually worth the hype. The type of burger I got was forgettable....the onion wasn't really oniony and the kitchen failed to spread the horseradish correctly so the middle was all horseradish and the edges had none....but the burger itself was awesome. Seeing as how we just had the fish and chips from The Boxing Donkey, in comparison this one is worse. The fish was super buttery, but significantly smaller in portion. It probably wouldn't fill you up, but ok none the less. My wife liked the tartar sauce. The French Dip was pretty tasty. The ju was good and actually had flavor instead of just tasting like salty brown water. My wife enjoyed the French Dip mostly plain without dipping into the ju so that should tell you something. Overall the food was pretty good, I feel like the portions could be better....I actually thought we would end up with leftovers but our fat asses ate all three of the entrees. The fries were forgettable, duck fat or not and service could have been a bit better, but it was a busy day so I'm not going to complain too much about it. Overall good experience and would come back again

EM T.

Yelp
Was a bit mediocre this visit and I'm scraping to make 3 stars. Things didn't start well as we were ignored while waiting for a table while the bar guy finished his conversation. I know it's not his job but at least acknowledge us? It wasn't busy. And then the promised water didn't arrive which was annoying as there was nobody to ask short of hunting around the place myself. So, onto the food. The salads are pretty good, the scotch egg is way smaller than it should be - mainly due to lacking sufficient sausage meat around it, leading to it being a bit overcooked (kudos for keeping the yolk runny tho) and kinda missing the point. French dip was very 'meh' I'm afraid. While the meat was tender, it was bland, the au-jus was also bland, and I consider this one of the main points of a FD. The horseradish aioli was lacking the horseradish part so that disappointed. Fries were OK but 50% of them seemed to be the leftovers or bottom of a bag as they were tiny fragments too crispy to eat so had to leave half of those. Nobody checked in on us or I'd have mentioned it. Sorry guys. I hope you were just having an off day but things were not great so I can't foresee another visit. Really didn't enjoy it.

Yelp
Came by here for drinks and appetizers after work. The sliders here were absolutely amazing and everyone loved them! The artichoke dip was also really good. They had variety of cheese boards and fruit plates that we all really enjoyed. Service was very helpful throughout our event here.

Yelp
{Updated Review} Monks cellar continues to impress me with their dishes. From the cottage pie to the rotating burgers that they bring in. The ambiance is always amazing and staff is always super polite. Services is always quick and drink options are amazing. Definitely would recommend their cottage pie if in season and their Saucisses et Bacon. Just absolutely to die for. Portion sizes are really nice as well. Definitely stumbled out of here happy as can be with my meal. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
I needed to be in the area so my wife and I decided to eat here for lunch. The indoors looks like a tavern which is fine and they brew their own beer which is pretty cool. Most of the beers are not the usual IPAs but they do have them. I had one and it was fine. Our server was friendly and attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Now the bad. After reading the reviews about the fish and chips, of which I am a fan, I ordered them. For me, they were over battered and burnt. The fish was dry, probably from what I deem to be the overcooking. They seem to feature duck fat fries, but I don't taste any difference from other fries at other places. It did come with a garlic aioli which was different but nothing to remember. My wife had the French Dip which looked okay and she said that it was just okay. I guess for me, the beer is the best thing about the place but I don't see myself returning unless someone else is buying.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday and Trivia Night starting at 6:30 PM with Quizmaster Zack. Parked at the garage/structure and walked over. Party of 3 for dinner, we didn't know beforehand about Trivia night but definitely joined in on the fun. Each table playing got a paper and pen for the 30 questions. The quiz master was mic'd up, and the speaker system was very good, even where we were in the breezeway past the restrooms. The 30 questions sort of had a theme, covering topics such as current events like the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards, Groundhog Day, Lunar New Year (dragon and moon-based questions), tall mountains, centenarians, phobias, old wive's tales, Godzilla, oysters, 80's movie title anagrams, etc. It was neat to be able to play along while the bites came out. We had the scotch egg, reuben fries, garlic fries, chips and salsa (x2), large pretzel, and sodas. The pretzel was substantial and fluffy good, with cheese and mustard dips. I liked the Reuben fries, too. Team #triplethreat didn't do too shabby! Missed the 8-point last question, though. Hadn't been in since before Covid for a Friendsgiving, but we chose this spot since The Place was closed, and it did not disappoint at all!

Yelp
Our daughter and son in law recommended this place to us. The place was pretty crowded. Too warm to sit outside, but we were sat at a two top near a window. Hubs had the Octoberfest beer and I ordered my standard Irish coffee. (The cream was too sweet but at least it wasn't Bailey's). Hubs judges restaurants on their beef dips and he said theirs were really good. The garlic aioli was so good and the au jus was perfect. I order the Monk burger, medium, no bun. It had pickled onions and cheese. It was not medium, but quite well done. A little dry but my husband's aioli and a little au jus made it better. The house made chips were phenomenal. So crispy and perfectly salted. Our service could not have been better. Thank you Michaela!

Shar K.

Yelp
We came here for lunch. Not busy. The service was not good. They had one guy working the bar & about 5 tables. Too much for one guy. We had to go up to the bar to get service since he never returned after he dropped our food off. I was really disappointed with the food as well. I had the Caesar salad & it was very plan & bland. Nothing to it. My friend had the fish & chips with fries. The fish was good but the tartar sauce was terrible. And, for all the hype about the duck fries on reviews, they were just meh. I've had much better. $52 plus tip for a mediocre meal at best. We won't be back.

Yelp
Service, Ambiance & aesthetic were on point! Came with some girlfriends on trivia night, & can I just say..so much fun!!! Drinks were amazing! Tacos nothing to brag about, but I'm pretty sure those aren't they're specialty no biggie, the rest of the experience was great we will definitely come again & order some other items

Yelp
The interior is very nicely built of dark wood and there's low volume music playing. The tri-tip salad is very good and comes with a piece of sliced steak on top. The fish and chips is good and non-oily though less than overwhelming. I'd planned on shepherd's (or whatever variant) pie which is only offered in the fall and winter, and hopefully I'll try it in the future. The service from Greechi is very good, thorough and unobtrusive.

Yelp
Had a chance visiting downtown for an event. After the event, we were walking around to find a place to grab a byte and chose Monk's Cellar. We had visited it a few years ago but did not remember how it was. The food was good just not too much to our liking. Well prepared and tasty. They do though have an extensive list of whiskey/bourbons and they are quite good. Service was also very good, friendly staff.

Yelp
We hadn't been to Monks cellar in awhile since our daughter stopped doing community theatre across the street. My son wanted to go for his birthday and I'm so glad he did. I've always loved their Monks burger and duck fat fries, so dang yummy! But I can't wait to go back my dil had the chicken dish and I tried it, so good! I also want to try their short rib stew thing-yum! My son had the mussels and it didn't disappoint. Sorry I can't give a review of the beer since I don't drink beer but others at our table seemed to be enjoying them. The only thing is it was trivia night and it was a little too loud for us.

Yelp
Downtown Roseville has many excellent restaurants, bars and pubs, but in all of my pub crawling, and eating adventures, I haven't seen anything in town like Monk's Cellar, as it's a unique restaurant... or is it a pub or is it a sports bar? Monk's Cellar mixes the lines between a restaurant, a pub, and a micro brewery, but it does it with class, and features some of the best upscale pub fare to be found in Roseville. Today, from the "Burgers and Sandwiches" section of the menu, I went with a "Brother Reuben" and a side of "Duck Fat Fries." The menu describes the sandwich as, "Corned beer, gruyere cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on a grilled Acme rye bread." If you're not fond of "Duck Fat Fries" there are several other choices of sides. For dessert... or was it an appetizer? ... I ordered a "Vernon Street Lager" from the micro brewery under the same roof as the restaurant. The sandwich began with two buttered and perfectly grilled slices of Acme rye bread, that was buttery, crispy and delicious but held the sandwich together well. The bread was brushed with Russian dressing and piled high with a generous helping of corned beef. The corned beef was tender, juicy, seasoned and not at all salty, and thinly cut for an added taste enjoyment. Shredded sauerkraut was placed on top of the beef, and topped with melted gruyere cheese. One bite into this amazing sandwich made me realize that I was enjoying a quality Reuben, perhaps the best Reuben in Placer County. Thanks to the crispy rye bread the sandwich had "crunch," the tender corned beef added the "meat," the sauerkraut added a welcome tang, and the gruyere cheese added both a touch of sweet and sour for an award winning combination. The chef at The Monk's Cellar has talent, as sandwich was perfectly grilled and worthy to note, the bread was not soggy. Such a delicious sandwich! Oh yes... how could we forget the famous "Duck Fat Fries?" The fries were cut from hand to a medium size, very lightly sprinkled with just enough salt to enhance the taste, and deep fried in duck fat to a perfect golden brown, to give them a very crisp, somewhat "nutty" taste. The fries were simply perfect, as they were juicy tender on the inside, with a golden brown crispness on the outside. Delicious! My lunch also included a cup of spicy, chunky, horseradish-brown mustard, and a cup of garlic aioli sauce. I used both for dipping the fries and dipped morsels of my sandwich into the mustard. The aioli sauce added a smooth, creamy touch, and the mustard added a robust, horseradish sensation to this fine lunch. When you're looking for one of the best Reuben sandwiches in the area, make your way over to The Monk's Cellar, located on Vernon Street in downtown Roseville. Another 5-star dining experience at The Monk's Cellar, located in downtown Roseville, CA.

Yelp
First, there are two things that I cannot hold against the Monk Cellars today, one the parking and two the wait time; due to the Big Boy Train events that was going on, this was way beyond their control. Downtown Roseville was a busy little city today. Once we were seated, we were greeted by Gage our server who with enthusiasm made a beer recommendation which by the way was for the Open Calefactory (Farmhouse Ale) which was an excellent choice to go with my order of Fish & Chips consisting of beer-battered fresh fish, light & crispy with duck fat fries, house-made coleslaw, & tartar sauce. My wife had iced-tea and a green salad consisting of local mixed greens, grape tomatoes, radishes, & house-baked croutons, adding avocado and chicken and a side of dressing. Another server delivered the beer to the table and explained as did Gage, that the beer was a collaboration between the Touchstone Brewing Company ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/touchstone-brewing-company-sacramento ) and the Monk Cellars to come up with this exciting and monstrously delicious beer which paired really well with fish and chips. So, here is the only drawback to the Monk Cellar, it's a pretty large establishment and it can get quite loud, however, we were seated toward the back of the restaurant where it was much quieter than up front. Lastly, I have to give props to the staff, as busy as this place was - they kept an upbeat attitude and provided excellent service. I've been here several times and will continue to keep coming because over the years the Monk Cellars hasn't lost their step. If you're in the Roseville downtown area... please stop in and try them out, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place since she had eaten here many times. I had no idea about this hidden gem and I'm glad she recommended we go for dinner. We shared the duck fat garlic fries as an appetizer and she had the Scotch egg. I gave the egg a try with its mustard and I think it was aioli? It was delicious because the egg was cooked inside like an egg in ramen with the yolk not cooked all the way and then it was breaded and delicious. I had no idea an egg could taste that good. The fries were delicious too. My friend had their fish and chips and said how good they were and how she ordered them all the time. I had the all American burger and the meat was good and tasty. The regular fries it came with were good but, it's worth substituting for garlic fries, because they're much better. It was super packed being Friday dinner time. But we were able to sit inside in an area with a couch, coffee table, and chairs. It technically wasn't open bar seating or an actual table but, the servers offered and said we could order and eat there since the wait was long and we didn't want to be outside in the heat. I'll definitely be back to try something else and our service was good and attentive.

Yelp
Food was a solid 9/10!! Jake our server was so awesome and helpful, we split 2 burgers and the cellar burger was sooo good! And the pretzel with cheese was outstanding (so good we ate before the camera)! I think we found a new super chill restaurant in Roseville!

Yelp
This was my first time visiting here. My girls and I were hungry waiting to see a cover band next door. Walked in and we were instantly greeted with a friendly smile. As packed as they were we actually were seated right away! That was wonderful! Staff was friendly. Great energy and vibe here. Everything we ordered was DELICIOUS!! Generous portions, too. Can't wait to go back and try different items on the menu!

Yelp
We came here for an early dinner tonight and everything was fantastic! Our server, Jake was 10/10. We started with a lager, cocktail, and the pretzels bites. I loved the pub cheese that it came with. I ordered the mussel dish with duck fat fries, served only on Friday & Saturdays, and let me tell you - they were delicious! On par with one of my favorite meals we had in brussels during our European trip last summer, which happened to be black mussels with white wine and garlic. Wow! I highly recommend this dish! The fries were flavorful and crispy, and I liked the aioli. My husband had the monk's burger just as it comes and he really enjoyed it! Love the atmosphere - it's a chill vibe. We can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu!

Yelp
Stopped for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Got seated right away in the patio area. Good spot to enjoy lunch! Ordered drinks and food. The fish and chips were delicious-- the batter wasn't overwhelming and the fries tasted great! Our server was friendly as well! Will be back to check out other things from the menu!

Yelp
Wow! What an awesome St. Patrick's Day celebration here at Monk's Cellar. I highly recommend this place for your March 17 celebration in honor of St. Patrick. Right when we arrived we were welcomed by the musical group playing some Irish music with kids adults dancing nearby. It was just a spectacular family-oriented restaurant. We knew that we didn't want to go to a club or bar and we wanted an atmosphere that was fun, comfortable and also entertaining. We're glad that we made the choice to come here for the holiday. First off, because it was a busy and packed night it was a seat-yourself type of dining. Thankfully, we found an open table towards the back and passed the band. Secondly, the prices for the night were reasonable. We ordered the famous and seasonal corned-beef and cabbage which was $20, the monk's burger with a salad, one beer for him, and a cheesecake for dessert. Our server was kind and gave us some caramel glazes to try for the cheesecake. Lastly, I enjoyed the entertainment, the musicians were fun and the Irish dancing by the kids and some adults were delightful to watch. Next time, I may join in on it!!

Yelp
If we ever come back to the Goldfield, this place will 100% be at the top of my list. Last week me and my friends went to see the Old 97's and wanted to grab some grub beforehand. The Monk's Cellar did not miss at all. Our friends grabbed a table for us while we were driving to our destination. It was about a 20-30 min wait around 6pm on a Wednesday night. Not bad. We parked at a parking garage a couple blocks down but their seemed to be lots of open street parking so I recommend checking that first. Very modern ambiance. I think it's what people would expect from a nice restaurant in this area. I ordered the Monk's Burger and it was definitely way better than I thought it was going to be. The arugula and pickled onions really gave a fresh and yet sharp flavor to the juicy hamburger patty which was cooked to a perfect Medium. The sauce though really took this burger over the top for me. I don't exactly know what Russian Dressing is but it was bomb. I already know someone reading this will probably be like, "Dude. It's basically In and Out sauce." I think there is some truth to this since both use Mayo and Ketchup as a base but the rest of the ingredients I'm sure are different beyond that. Again what those ingredients are, I wouldn't know because Ive never had that until now but in any case I recommend the burger. The Tai One On was also an amazing cocktail. If you are a lover of tiki drinks(Like I am...), you'll definitely love this one. It's almost like a different take on a Mai Tai where instead of Rum, they use Rye Whiskey which brings a slightly different flavor to the classic cocktail. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I forgot to add that service was on point too. Nothing that the 4 of us ordered this night was bad. The theme for the entire night was perfection.

Yelp
Well I'm sorry to say our experience at Monks Cellar was not good. On August 17 2025 we walked into the bar area where we were met by a female bartender with dark hair wearing a black baseball style hat. I began looking at the draft beer taps while asking the bartender if we could sit outside. She said yes and as I started to ask her about the draft beers she immediately said, "You better go outside a get a table before they are gone". Felt odd but we turned and walked to the patio area and sat down. We sat for about ten minutes and no one came to take our order or give us any information. At this point we looked toward the bar where the noted bartender was talking to another employee behind the bar. They appeared to look at us as we looked toward them. No effort was made to come to the patio. After a few more minutes we left, leaving through the bar out the front door. The bartender certainly saw us exiting and made no effort to ask if there was a problem. She never told us if ordering at the bar was a requirement. How do we save a table when we have to leave the table to come back inside and order. Where not going to leave our belongings unattended at an outside table. Very disappointed. Never found out how good the beer or food was as the initial contact with very unprofessional as the employee set the tone.

Yelp
What a find! I stopped in for lunch with friends and was left impressed. The Craftsman (Grilled chicken thigh, smoked gouda on sourdough) was top notch; cooked well and the bread has a satisfying but not cut your mouth crisp to it. The meal paired excellently the couple in-house brews on tap I had the opportunity to try. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated and fits well for drinks with co-workers or a casual family dinner. Our server was truly a delight, being both attentive to our needs and very friendly.

Yelp
First time out here and sat at the bar with a friend. Our bartender was kyla, she was extraordinary! They seemed pretty busy but she still managed to serve us as if we were her only guests. That was some impressive work mixing drinks for her tickets and other guests, having conversation with us, still able to get our order in and having a great attitude about it the whole time. If anything she's the sole I'd give a 5 star. But good news is there are more layers to this great review that this place should be praised for. Granted I came in for a snack, so my review will be based on two things. Their fries and their caeser salad. AMAZING. Capers in a caeser? I think I have a new favorite ingredient to master my careers with. The fries were fuck fat garlic fries and god damn they were something else. I got the mission margarita (twice cause i like to have a good time) and split 2 frozen maitais, with a 151 top. Yeah we were originally going to just share 1, but it was delicious and really strong. I'll abolsutley come back to try some more of their main items soon. It'll be my mission (margarita is also getting another date with me soon) The ambiance was that of a higher-end restaurant you'd find in truckee. It was a mom and pop feel over a corp.

Yelp
THE FRIES ARE SO GOOD. We've came back multiple times. Always had great service. I like the inside or outside seating option. Nice family friendly ambiance.
