This one was lying in my bookmarks for so long I almost forgot about it. Fortunately, having found myself further south on a Sat I figured its time to give it a go.
Despite its tiny size (2 customers and its crowded, seriously) it is instantly obvious that the place is well established. The interior looks like an old school craftsmans workshop and so do the products displayed in uneven stacks on the front counter. And what a sight it is with the croissants, cakes, buns and swirls mounting in front of you, tempting to dive into them head first. And so I did, sort of. After packing all my bags though I realised that I have no idea where to actually eat it (I live more than an hours commute from the place). I ended up heading to Brixton Market for somewhere to taste the goods (bad choice for slow food appreciation).
Despite surrounding the noise I really loved all the products:
Spelt, date and walnut slice - moist, packed with lovely crunch
Pain au chocolat - big, light and chewy, layers with just the right amount of butter, crunchy chocolate tasting hmmm...homely, so nice, reminded me of old times
Bread pudding - awesome texture - very rich and yet morish, not overkilled like some brownies with similar consistency
Cinnamon swirl - classic flavours, without any deviations, just solid craft, home-styled bake
To test the basics I also had a ciabatta and brioche, the second unusually dense, probably my least favourite of the bunch.
A great shame was that I was too mesmerised and got too much stuff lacking time to fully appreciate it. Top tip: take it home, grab some butter, play some music or invite good company. In out crazy City this is really a gem.
