The Aspirational Food World Tried (and Failed) to Shame My Love of Red Sauce | Bon Appétit

"The source of a childhood favorite: a plate of spaghetti coated in butter and topped with salty grated Greek Mizithra cheese, a nostalgic comfort dish that shaped the author’s early taste." - ByAlex Pemoulie

My friend and I had a casual lunch at this meticulously decorated restaurant—made especially enjoyable by the hospitable staff! Our server Christian was very kind and attentive, and we felt very much welcomed in the restaurant. We shared a fried calamari and Mizithra cheese & browned butter spaghetti, which came with a generous loaf of bread, salad, and spumoni ice cream (a mix of chocolate, pistachio, and cherry flavors). The food was fantastic, and the portions were so generous. Will definitely be back to try other specialties!

So the first thing I noticed about this place was the service. I accidentally dropped my napkin on the floor. As I was picking it up the general manager Barney was there handed me a fresh napkin and taken the one I had just dropped on the floor away. Cole was my server and he was very attentive to my needs. Even had ice cream at the end of my meal. The baked lasagna was absolutely awesome. I have to say it's better than my mom made. Sorry Mom. This place is a must visit the atmosphere service and food make this a five-star restaurant.

The restaurant is located in San Pedro Square; a mall of many restaurants. Street metered parking is pretty good. The restaurant is directly across a parking garage. The atmosphere reminds me of a church with stain glass windows, booths, high ceilings and antique light fixtures. Atmosphere is welcoming. We had our own dining room (group of 20) that was spacious and relaxing. The only complaint was that the room was dark where a majority of us had to use our phone's flashlights to read the menu. The menu's print was hard to see and there was too much going on. It seems they wanted to squeeze all menu items onto a two sided menu. We had one server/waiter that was friendly, helpful, patience and efficient. He took our orders quickly with graciousness. I specially told him that I don't want any garnishing like the flakes that they put on entrees because I don't eat onions nor parsley/cilantro. When my order came, the meat did not have any flakes but the pasta was loaded with flakes. This is so illogical to me that I showed my plate to the server/waiter and he knew immediately what was wrong with my plate. He later came back with a new non-flake plate. My complaint is that the food was not temperature hot, the way I like it. Instead it was luke warm. I don't like seeing melted cheese looking like a slab. - to me, it's like it was sitting somewhere. My table mates were in agreement that the food was luke warm, even the soup, and was too salty. The best were the cotton candy lemonade and spumoni ice cream. This spumoni ice cream looked what I was accustomed to but it was missing the candied fruits.

The food was really meh. We ordered the artichoke dip, the garlic mizithra pasts and the spinach and cheese ravioli. The Pasta came with a choice of soup or salad. We also got complementary bread and ice cream. None of the food was amazing except the bread. Price wise not too bad.

The cheesecake was to die for. Despite going on Valentine’s Day, the food service was impressively fast. Loved the chicken Parmigiani, The Sicilian Garlic Cheesebread is a must have And the Italian crème soda was wonderful. Had two flavors: blackberry and raspberry. I think blackberry is a clear winner. I’m going here again just for that cheesecake

The best service I've ever had. The manager was amazing and the food was delicious. I'm definitely coming back again

Google
I like the place, it is cute and convenient. I feel like it's mostly worth it if you're getting their 3-course meal, their bread and butter are delicious. As for their roasted wild mushroom ravioli, I'd skip it. Not good at all. If you want to try their sauces there's a way to get multiple on one pasta, that's what I did the first time I was here. Their Mizithra cheese and brown butter is quite peculiar, I'd never had it anywhere else and it's interesting.

This is a very interesting version of the old spaghetti factory. They are very common out by Sacramento and other places but for whatever reason are very rare in the Bay area. However this location is very fascinating and when you come and eat here you feel like you are taking a walk down the history of San Jose. It is inside an old converted church and many of the trappings are still there: stained glass windows and pulpits. But it also has plenty of vintage decor, making this a real experience to dine and explore the premises. There is even an old trolley car from 1st Street in the middle of one of the large dining rooms, and you are able to sit within which is kind of an experience in of itself. In fact there are multiple dining areas in the premises, due to the size of the building it was built in. There's also an upstairs area with a lounge and a special private dining area, in the lounge there are some areas for kids to play video games. The food is typical spaghetti factory fare, which is both enjoyable and very friendly for kids and families. They have a good selection of cocktails to choose from, the strawberry drop was very tasty. The staff is friendly and attentive and come by often to check that everything is okay. I would definitely recommend this place, both for the food if you like Italian, but also for the ambience which is quite fascinating.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best spots I've been to in a while. The staff were super chill and welcoming, the vibe was cozy but not too fancy -- just right. I ordered the lamb and it was cooked perfectly -- juicy, tender, full of flavor. My friend had the grilled chicken plate and said the same. Portions are solid too, you won't leave hungry.

Yelp
Came here for lunch because it's the best time for parking and the place was pretty quiet. We got sat upstairs by ourselves, which worked since my sisters kids were with us. The vibe was very calm and a bit dark for my liking. Gave more of a date night lighting rather than a family lunch. The food was good. But I will say I've had better lasagna. The flavors were there but the pasta sheets were a bit over cooked and a little tough to chew. But I loved their bread as usual. And the spimoni (not sure if spelled correctly) ice cream was a great ending and tasty at that.

Yelp
Absolutely Disgraceful Service - Birthday Dinner RUINED I had been looking forward to this dinner for weeks. I drove over an hour to get to this restaurant because it came highly recommended, and it was my birthday--I was excited to celebrate and enjoy a nice evening out. What I got instead was one of the most frustrating and disappointing restaurant experiences I've ever had. To make matters worse, it wasn't even busy--it was a slow Monday night, with no crowd or chaos to blame. Despite this, our server, Alejandro, couldn't have cared less. He didn't greet us, didn't introduce himself, and treated us with indifference from the moment we sat down. No warmth, no effort, no hospitality whatsoever. When it came time to order, he took our orders without making eye contact or saying much of anything. My friend eventually received her meal--but I, the birthday girl, never got mine. Not even an update, not an apology, not a single check-in. Alejandro completely ignored us after taking the order. We waited for an unreasonably long time while other tables (who arrived after us) were served. At no point did Alejandro explain the delay or show any concern for the fact that one of us had been completely overlooked--on a birthday dinner, no less. Eventually, feeling completely disregarded and finding out my meal was ready for some time and he simply did not bring it to me, we got up and left. I never even got to eat. What should've been a special celebration turned into an upsetting, uncomfortable, and frankly disrespectful experience. Alejandro's behavior was unprofessional and inexcusable and seemed like it was learned behavior after speaking with management. I won't be returning--and I'd strongly suggest others think twice before choosing this place. I'll be warning friends and family to avoid this place too.

Yelp
I haven't been inside one for over 20 years. There used to be a location at Jack London Square in Oakland, CA long time ago. This Old Spaghetti Factory is excellent and convenient at location across the street from Park SJ parking garage. It still has its old traditional touch and historic charms. Dark and dim lighting inside. Unique and beautiful. Old fashioned rusty dusty feeling. Staffs were helpful. Not many customers are there during weekday lunchtime. I actually enjoyed dining inside quietly today. By the way, their lunch menu options, especially the pasta classics course meal set is still very much cheaper than dinner menu prices. Save a few more bucks by visiting at lunchtime instead. Military/veterans/first responders 10% discount available. I like it here, especially looking at those old architectural features and windows. My pasta mizithra lunch pasta was only $16.25. Yes, what a good fat wallet deal. Cheesy pasta just the way I like it. Portions were still generous too. Comes with the best warm fluffy soft sourdough bread and butter, plus your choice of minestrone soup or Caesars salad with dressing. Very good. Spumoni ice cream comes with the meal only at dinner, so expect to pay another $1.99 for ice cream if you want to add it to your pasta classics lunch meal. My hot green tea was $3.50. Overall, good value, good service as needed, and great first impression so far. Peaceful and relaxing inside. $23.78 after taxes and before tips. Not bad for a good portion of great tasting foods. I'm glad I stopped by. Beautiful landscape and beautiful benches outside. Good feeling. I hope they gain more customers. I will be revisiting in future. Note, most menus you see posted on Yelp are dinner menu prices. Expect a good lunch around a good $20 average. Music in the background was calming. No crowds or long lines. Unbeatable. They definitely need to dust off the dining areas. It's really old and dusty inside. Original, but can be improved. Loving it so far.

Yelp
A bad picture for a great meal! I ordered the wild mushroom ravioli and it was so good and fulfilling. I love how you get soup/salad before and ice cream after, all for the price of the entree. Service was pretty fast and our waiter was very nice and accommodating. Parking is very tight, so we parked on a nearby street and walked to the restaurant though.

Yelp
5 Stars - A Fantastic Vintage Dining Experience! I recently dined at The Old Spaghetti Factory with my sister, and it was hands down one of the best restaurant experiences we've had! From the moment we walked in, we were captivated by the vintage train-themed decor, which gave the whole place a charming and nostalgic atmosphere. What really caught our attention was the Murder Mystery Night--we're definitely coming back for that! Our server, Anthony, was outstanding--attentive, patient, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. The service was top-notch from start to finish. We started with warm bread served with whipped butter, vinegar, and oil, which was a great way to begin the meal. We decided to share a three-course meal, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we could each get our own starter and dessert! My sister chose the minestrone soup, which she said was her favorite thing on the menu. I went with the green salad with creamy ranch, and it was just as delicious as it was creamy. For the entrée, we ordered the White Clam Pasta, and it was packed with flavor. We only made it through half before we were full because the portions were huge. The big portions were absolutely worth it for the price--we got so much food for what we paid, making it a fantastic value. To finish off the meal, I had the Neapolitan ice cream with cherry, pistachio, and chocolate--the perfect sweet treat to end an already fantastic dining experience. Overall, this visit exceeded my expectations. Between the amazing food, excellent service, and the exciting events like Murder Mystery Night and wine tastings, I can't wait to come back! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining experience with generous portions.

Yelp
Still thriving from the looks of it. We've been taking advantage of their $25 meatball Monday deal once in awhile. Deal comes with 2 salad or soups, bread, spaghetti and meatballs (4) for 2, choice of 2 beverages or a half carafe of house wine (about 2 full wine classes) and 2 ice creams. We usually get full off of the bread, salad, wine and ice cream with another meal of spaghetti for lunch the next day. Service can be hit or miss. The last two times we've gone, they sat us in the trolley. How fun! I'm viewing others orders, we're surprised more people do not take advantage of the deal considering one entree is about $20 already. For a few dollars more, you get drinks plus another entree worth. It's not the best quality pasta but it's still pretty tasty and a great deal!

Yelp
I have not been to an old spaghetti factory in about 40 years. I used to go to the one in Sacramento when I was young. We were in San Jose to see STARS on ice and my granddaughter enjoys old spaghetti factory so we decided to have lunch here. Although it didn't look crowded there was about a 10 minute wait. The kids menu although brief is very reasonable at $7.99 which includes a beverage. My granddaughter ordered the mac & cheese and she ate all of it. I had a mushroom ravioli, which was very tasty although extremely rich, but the side salad was a iceberg lettuce mix out of a bag. The Arnold Palmer I had was so pale it almost looked like water. I tasted it, and it was like an extremely watered down lemonade. I ended up not drinking it, and the server did not charge me for it when I let her know it was not up to par. My daughter had a mock-tail and she said it was tasty however, it didn't come out until much later than my beverage- we were mid-meal when it finally arrived. I'd have to say the best part for me was their spumoni ice cream, which I haven't had in many many years. It wasn't what I expected, which is usually a vanilla ice cream with some dried fruit in it. However, it was more like a Neapolitan, but with pistachio ice cream in it and was really delicious . The prices for the meals (except the kids) I found to be a little bit high for the food.

Yelp
Food: tried their GARLIC MIZITHRA, which is spaghetti with Mizithra cheese & browned butter, garlic, bacon, and mushrooms. (1360 Cal) $21.99 as of May 2024. It was good but eating a plate of that could become a little "one note" towards the end, but I still enjoyed it. I think if they had included a wedge of lemon or something citrusy or acidic, it would've elevated the dish in my opinion. This is served with bread (490 Cal), minestrone soup (100 Cal) or a green salad with a choice of dressing (120-300 Cal), and their signature spumoni (170 Cal) or vanilla ice cream (170 Cal) for dessert. The bread came super late, and they only provided two small loaves for a large party of 11 people, which in my mind was not remotely enough. And they didn't even come back to offer additional bread. So, I was less than impressed about that, to say the least. With that said, their house salad with their creamy pesto ranch was good. I would get that again. The spumoni ice cream (cherry, chocolate, pistachio) at the end was also a great ending to our dinner. Service: as mentioned before, it felt like they really skimped out on the bread. In addition, our waiter kept on forgetting people's drinks and salad. So the service was not good. Unfortunately I think that really negatively impacted our dining experience and my overall impression of this restaurant. Ambiance: the restaurant looks like an old-school Italian restaurant with cozy vibes. I liked it.

Yelp
I used to eat here a long time ago. Daughter wanted spaghetti so decided to go here since it's been a really long time since I've eaten here. Restaurant wasn't very busy when we arrived so we got seated shortly after arrival. Entrees here come with a soup or salad, bread, and ice cream when you are done. Food here is just okay. I think one of the better things to try here is the garlic mizithra pasta.

Yelp
came here with the girls on a tuesday night with no wait! we got to sit in the trolley since it was one of their first times here. i had the mushroom ravioli which was pretty good, the alfredo sauce can be on the saltier side. i really like their strawberry cream soda here and you can take the cup home as a souvenir! i really like their italian sausage, i get it every time i go!

Yelp
I had dinner here recently with a large group. We had 16 people total - half kids. I got there late after the group was already sat upstairs but I do know the original waiter was not good at all. But once a 2nd waiter took over, things greatly improved. The first waiter took food orders before even asking about drinks. So some of the food came before we had any drinks. This was under the first waiter. Once the 2nd waiter took over, she made sure we all got our drinks, salads and entrees later on. She did a much better job and really took care of us. Some of us shared the sangria pitcher. This was really tasty. It had more of a sparkling blush flavor than a strong red wine flavor which i enjoyed. Their salads are always good too. And the bread is very tasty. For my entree, I had the Gourmet Jumbo Crab Ravioli: Large ravioli stuffed with savory crab meat and ricotta cheese topped with a rich Pesto Alfredo Sauce. Very tasty. Not a strong flavor but overall I enjoyed it. And I love their spumoni ice cream for dessert. Also a nice treat at the end.

Yelp
Súper beautiful place to eat. It looks romantic and is super old fashioned decorated. I have been here before and I have always like this place. Food is good and relaxing ambiance. I remember the spaghetti and meatballs were a 10/10. Today after 20 years later, it didn't taste the same but it was good. Our server was kind. I will be back

Yelp
A classic establishment with great food and great service. If you're familiar with the menu you'll know you can find all your pasta needs at the old spaghetti factory. Prices are fair and you won't leave hungry.

Yelp
This place is always a classic to go to and it's been forever since I've been here too. We were greeted right away by the host and no wait for the 2 of us for a Sunday lunch. We sat in the trolley that did feel a little tight. My go to dish is their famous mizthra spaghetti with browned butter. It was delicious!! I love how it comes with hot bread, salad or soup, and ice cream for dessert. The bread was freshly baked and really hot. I got the creamy pesto salad. We ordered the mizthra with a side of the chicken Parmesan. The chicken was good size and tasty with sauce and cheese on top. Everything was delicious and perfect for the 2 of us to share it. We filled up on the bread as well and this was a cheese lover's dream. Lots of cheese and butter!! I can't wait to come back for more mizthra!

Yelp
It has been years since we have visited this place and let's just say it will be years again before we revisit it. It wasn't like we remembered it to be and the spaghetti has really gone downhill and the sauces lack flavor. We ordered a Potpourri and a Manager's Favorite and we were in shock when our order arrived. It was seriously like we had ordered from the kids menu. The portion you get for lunch is so small now. We should have suspected something was up when our Server asked if we wanted a lunch or dinner size and couldn't tell us the portion difference. Also, if you order the lunch size, you no longer get the ice cream for dessert like in the past. We remember in the past we couldn't finish our entire meal and would have to take our leftovers to go. We did also get some sides of one meatball, one sausage and a small broccoli which were decent. Unfortunately, our lunch was not worth the price point. The one thing we can compliment is the service was great.

Yelp
My co-worker girlfriends and I had a fun dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory. I've been there many times with my hubby, family and friends, and always have a great experience. Some of my favorite dishes include the Mizithra Cheese & Brown Butter, Chicken Parmigiana, and the Pot Pourri. Each entree comes with fresh baked bread, soup or salad - I always go for the creamy pesto dressing, and scoop of their signature spumoni or vanilla ice cream to finish.

Yelp
Love this place! The vintage vibes are great, especially the unique touch of the caboose. The sourdough bread with garlic butter is insanely addicting--I always ask for extra to go. The pastas are fresh and full of flavor, and the service has always been good.

Yelp
As critical as I am, when it comes to reviews; I've learned not to mess with institutions and The Old Spaghetti factory is just that . It's nothing more and nothing less than what's on that silly paper placemat . It's pasta and sauce all day and I can't complain ! I love their lasagne for one simple reason . It is not over cheesy . Just perfect. Have I had better? Possibly; every restaurant has its own take on Italian . I will say the house Pinot could improve . Very acidic and didn't enjoy . I won't deduct anything for it though. It's just $10.00 wine. We had a reservation and The hosting staff got us seated immediately . Our server Enrique was very efficient and helpful with helping us decide our meals . Enrique was very attentive to our needs and we really enjoyed his service . Everyone seemed to be doing something and the staff were very friendly overall . Huge plus for my reviews ! Place was cleaned and the bathrooms were clean. Will we return , yes! Soon? Maybe , pretty sad they closed the one in RWC-which was closer to us! Goal achieved - I was happy with zero complaints. (A rarity )

Yelp
I could have chosen any restaurant for my daughter's 21st bday but chose old spaghetti factory because it was near a bar I wanted to take her to and have always had good experiences. I made reservation in advance telling them it was her birthday. Had requested to sit in the trolley car but was told I could not reserve it and if it's available when we arrive we can sit there. Instead we are seated in bar area, at booth for six people. We were literally sitting shoulder to shoulder. Felt like we were the forgotten table. When it took us forever to get our drinks, having to ask for water refills and asking for empty plates to be cleared, I went to front and spoke with 3 people(one being manager I'm assuming) . Had mentioned we were celebrating my daughter's birthday, voiced my concerns, and asked to be moved to another table. After that the manager stepped in and things were better, but still had to ask for water and plates to be removed from table. At one point I had to hold my salad plate in my hands and eat because there was no room on the table. Our server had let us know it was his first shift after going through training. He looked flustered the whole time. Was very disappointed and will probably not go back.

Yelp
The Old Spaghetti Factory is one of my favourite chain restaurants. I have been going to the location in downtown San Jose since as long as I can remember. The restaurant is a great place for affordable good eats in a family friendly setting. Consistent with the OSF chain's look, the San Jose locale is decorated with colourful Victorian style furniture popping out hues of purple, deep red, and blue in the building of hardwood floors and natural earth toned walls. The English telephone booth and red trolley dining area add a fun factor to the vibrant environment. No dedicated private parking lot, though. Since every entrée is one of three courses (Meals come with hot bread, choice of minestrone soup or a green salad with a choice of dressing, entrée selection, and their signature spumoni or vanilla ice cream for dessert), this restaurant is an awesome place for hosting served dinner parties. Not only do you get a big bang for your buck here, the food and drinks are A-OK. Food: My favorite Pasta Classics are the WHITE CLAM SAUCE and the ITALIAN SAUSAGE (requested as spicy). So why not order both, right? I do! A customized Manager's Favorite of pairing the two makes my tummy happy, followed by a scoop of spumoni. Drinks: The Italian Cream Sodas are a treat. Order one - you deserve it! My favourite flavours are Raspberry and Strawberry. How I wish that I lived closer to The Old Spaghetti Factory. I would be there more often!

Yelp
Solid dining experience, as always. Our waiter (who was also the bartender that day) was so fantastic, he was friendly and personable and took great care of us. We sat outside, and enjoyed the afternoon, we had a group of five and were happy to have found a place without the game on so we could talk. Food was awesome, as always. We had three carnivores and two vegetarians in our party and everyone was very happy with the number of options and the food they got. We tried the cotton candy limeades WOW those were sweet, one of our group asked for a second one with more lime to it and was very happy with that. Very nice day out and meal for us. I continue to highly recommend them. Never had a bad meal here.

Ambience is good, but food is just mediocre We came here with higher expectations! The area is cute to walk around and the desert was probably the best part

Yelp
Ate here for the first time the other day and honestly it was just ok, nothing crazy. Here's everything that I ordered: Berry Sangria 10/10: The drink was delicious and refreshing. It also had a good amount of sweetness which I liked. Jumbo Crab Ravioli 5/10: The pesto alfredo sauce was good but the ravioli itself wasn't. There was a hint of fishiness to it which made it hard to finish. I feel like it wasn't too filling either with only a few large pieces of the pasta. The entree comes with a free appetizer of soup or salad and a free dessert of spumoni or vanilla ice cream. I chose the salad with balsamic which was ok. Tasted fine but I didn't like that there were big chunks of bunched lettuce in it. For dessert, I had the vanilla ice cream which was ok too, nothing special. As for the ambiance, it was nice inside the restaurant. It's dimly lit which creates a nice vibe. It's cute outside the entrance as well, perfect photo op. Service was great too, we had a waiter that was nice and attentive.

Yelp
I love giving positive reviews for amazing service, and this one is well deserved. My cousin recently had her bridal shower at The Old Spaghetti Factory, and our server, Cayla, was absolutely outstanding. She was prompt with our drinks and appetizers, and her recommendations were spot-on. A big thanks to Cayla for helping make my cousin's shower extra special!

Yelp
Been coming here with friends and we do enjoy eating here only if it was a group. For some reason the ambiance is laid back but the dim lighting kinda bothers me as I need to readjust my eye to the ambiance and its no help when you have to light up your menu just to place an order. I order the managers choice which comes with salad, pasta and dessert. The complimentary bread is nice as it is warm and the butter smooth.

Yelp
This was such a great experience for new years day dinner!! We called about an hour ahead to make reservations for two, they seated us on time and the server was on point! Checking in on us, refilling waters, and everything came out as ordered! We honestly thought there would be a much bigger crowd, but it was nice! Definitely will be back!! :)

Yelp
This review is meant to highlight the manager Ramon Barragan. Ramon is the epitome of what customer service is all about. The hostess was also excellent not only in greeting us, but in being diligent in assisting whomever she could (I wish I would have gotten her name to acknowledge as well. As for the food, the spaghetti with meatballs & sausage was delicious, as was the chicken marsala with non traditional sauce. The side salads were fresh, the bread loaf was abundant, the Spumoni was great. Strongly recommend - no surprise that our experience today was so pleasant with a manager with the caliber of Ramon on board.

Yelp
We came on a Friday night so it was busy because of the Sharks game, so it was very hot inside and musty (didn't smell too great). However, the Christmas decorations were pretty and the restaurant was very well decorated. The espresso martini was made very well, it was delicious! Their bread is my favorite spot that gives free bread-- it's too good! Our server was kind, and we had an overall great experience!

Yelp
I've been dining at The Old Spaghetti Factory for decades, and their quality and quantity for the price are unbeatable. My go-to dish is always the pasta with Mizithra cheese and browned butter--it's so unique, I can't even replicate it at home! If you're in downtown San Jose, whether catching a show or just looking for a dinner spot with great ambiance (it feels like dining in a castle), this is the perfect choice. My daughter loves their Italian Cream Sodas, and the meal includes soup or salad and ice cream for dessert. It's one of my favorite places for delicious food at a great value! The service is also on par.

Yelp
This place is located in downtown San Jose, so parking is difficult to find. We wound up parking 4 blocks away. There's a cute alleyway where people were taking prom photos right outside the restaurant. We had a pretty short wait, tables opened up quickly even though it was prom. My boyfriend really wanted to come here after our hike. I was less enthused since I'm not a huge fan of pasta these days. I used the bathroom before eating and my goodness it was disgusting in there. Definitely lost my appetite right away. My boyfriend had to ask the waiter to replace his utensils 3 times because every set they brought him was caked in old food residue. Pretty disgusting. I basically didn't want to eat there anymore. My utensils and our friend's utensils were fine. Bread was nice. I got the white clam sauce pasta with salad and the spumoni ice cream. My friend had the white clam sauce, minestrone soup, and vanilla ice cream. Boyfriend had the chicken breast fettuccine, minestrone soup, and vanilla ice cream. The food tasted decent, I like that it comes with an appetizer and dessert. I don't think I'll be back though because the hygiene had me worried. Decor was nice, but probably just how the chain does it.

Yelp
Went for dinner on 7/31/25 and had the nicest waiter. He was very attentive and polite. The two of us both order the managers special. Meat sauce with brown butter/mizithra cheese. The salad was good and the portion of pasta was plenty. The pasta was a little overcooked, the meat sauce had very little flavor and there was no brown butter with the mizithra cheese. The pasta was blah! Our waiter made sure we had soda refills, plenty of bread. Then there must have been a shift change. We now had a new waitress, we never knew what happened to our original waiter. She asked if we needed any boxes and if we would like ice cream. Yes on the boxes and we declined the ice cream. We asked for our bill. I paid the bill with $100.00 and it took a while to get my change. When she did come back and return with my change I was shorted $2.00 I saw her and flagged her down and told her I was shorted $2.00. She replied "We don't have change. So I said " So you just short the customer" and she replied " Well do you have five ones" "I said No! Im thinking you just shorted me two dollars now you want me to give $5.00 more? "She now goes on to tell me to put the shortage towards her tip" Seriously? Now Im thinking what waitress in the world would request all this. So I asked her politely to speak to a manager. She said she would get him. We waited for a bit and Aaliyah comes back to our table and slams down $2.00 with anger and says the manager will be with right with you. He never came and we were tired of waiting so we left. I really wish the manager would have addressed us regarding our issue. I haven't been here in years. It is sad to see to see the quality of food go down. Oh then there is that one waitress that leaves a bad taste in your mouth as well as the pasta. I truly hope they rebound with the food quality because the OSF is such an icon and surely dont want them to shut the doors. Would love for them to stay successful!

Yelp
Phone Ordered chicken picata, when I arrived they claimed they no longer served that. Same situation occurred the previous week - requested pasta Pomodoro from their digital menu but was informed they were out. The chicken parmigiana was tough, and difficult to chew despite decent taste. The meat was practically uneatable. On my last two visits, my meal lacked a salad once and missed the spumoni another time. Always verify your order before departing. Not going back even though my family has been going there for over 25 years.

Yelp
Great service. Came in for a work lunch and while it wasn't a do not disturb meeting, greatful for the guy who asked how we would like to be served so he didn't ruin our meeting. Very prompt, professional and diligent. Food was great, everyone loved it and it came out quickly. While I was a bit slow for lunch, I know this place can get packed for dinner. So great way to enjoy a meal here and not be rushed or long wait.

Yelp
They've got a nice selection of gluten free pastas. My kiddo eats from the children's menu without complaint. I ordered the spumoni ice cream and my parents went wild. Their takeout is generally well packaged, and a good value. I haven't eaten inside the restaurant yet, but the space is inviting.

Yelp
Always a bright spot on my memory. Stopped in for lunch. Salad/entree/dessert. Always a winner with the decor unchanged from the 70's.

Yelp
I'd describe the food here as basic but delicious. The service was fast and friendly. There were simple flavors and I was satisfied with my experience. I haven't been here in a long time and it brings back childhood memories. The ambiance is very old school and medieval timely. Would come back and recommend coming here.

Yelp
I'm kind of in a toss up here. I like the food here and think it's better than okay, but I don't think it's anything spectacular either. That being said, I love the value for the price. I feel like you get a really good amount of food for what you are paying. I've never actually eaten inside the restaurant, but I order from DoorDash sometimes. They package the food really well. I love that they use aluminum pie dish-type to-go containers. They are great from reheating. I can just take the plastic lid off and throw the container in my airfryer for a few minutes. Much better leftovers than if I was to throw the pasta in the microwave. Special shout out to their broccoli side dish and the scoop of ice cream I get with every over. I'm a sucker for ice cream. The broccoli is simple. Literally broccoli and parm cheese, but I love it. Also, I really like that they have the option to replace your pasta with broccoli. Maybe other places do this too, but just don't have it as an option on their online menu. The DD menu features this option and I appreciate that.

Yelp
I've gotta give kudos when it's due. The service was top notch on a busy Saturday evening. Our server was attentive and even the manager was making his rounds checking in on tables - always a nice touch. For our 3-course meal - I got salad and my partner got soup so we shared both and we loooved the warm bread and butter that came with. Everything came out promptly but not all at once so we could enjoy the meal. Loved our pasta entrees: - Mushroom Ravioli: sauce was amazing, perfectly al-dente, we wiped the plate clean with bread - Garlic Mizritha: delicious, al-dente, wonderful (and veg-friendly without bacon) Parking is not bad in the garage or street parking. Recommend making a reservation online or call ahead as it can get packed! Old Spaghetti Factory is an iconic spot in San Pedro Square - perfect for a cute date night or night out with friends :-)

Yelp
I have not been to the old spaghetti factory in years, but it seems like it has been around for ages. Turns out it started in 1969. The food was even better than I ever remembered, and our server Apollo was attentive and friendly. The decorations were very nice. The menu had something for everybody, and I am looking forward to going back soon.

Yelp

Yelp
Food was a 4/5 and service was a 2/5! I had the Garlic Shrimp Fettuccine and my partner had the Chicken Parmigiana. The fettuccine was a 8/10. It was nice and creamy, but I felt as though it lacked a little in flavor. Honestly just needed a little bit of salt. My partner gives their dish 6/10. The chicken was on the dryer side and it just tasted average. Nothing stood out for them. The side salad that came with the meal was pretty good. It tasted fresh and the lettuce was nice and crunchy. I do recommend getting the sauce on the side if you wanna adjust how much you put in. For the appetizers, we got the Olive Tapenade. We give it a 6/10 because nothing really stood out. It just seems like blended up olives with oil. At the end of our meal, we got the Tiramisu and vanilla ice cream. It was okay. Nothing bad nor good. Obviously nothing beats vanilla ice cream. 10/10!! The service was ok. The server was quick with everything, but they didn't seem friendly nor welcoming. They made a little small talk, but after that they just continued doing their own thing.

Yelp
Such a beautiful restaurant and atmosphere. We were able to sit in the cable car and it was so great, my whole life living in San Jose and I finally was able to dine in the cable car! My son's first time here and he loved it. Kayla our server was impeccable, very attentive, talkative and super friendly! Food was amazing and service was fast. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We have been coming to TOSF since I was a little girl. We host birthday parties here, come for happy hour (back then), and always lunch or dinner when we crave pasta! The vibe is super rustic, and old fashioned. Def you feel like you're in another country! We love it! Entrees come with hot bread and butter, salad, and a spumoni icecream for dessert!

Yelp
Spaghetti Factory never misses when you're hosting a large party! I like to eat spaghetti every year on my birthday and this year I decided to go out instead of making it at home. Broccoli and mizithra is a must for my family. This time I got the Manager's Favorite: meat lovers + mizithra with meatballs and sausage. I recommend getting it hearty style to take more left overs! My son is a picky eater however LOVES the meatballs here. He ate spaghetti and meatballs and most of it was gone!

Yelp
A classic spot for comforting italian food and a gigantic meal. we got the crab and lobster ravioli and the meat lover's. crab and lobster ravioli was delicious but we were told that they no longer had lobster, was a big disappointed :(. meat lover's was fine, the meatball was the best part. the free bread was nice and warm but pretty flavorless, the soups and salads were great, and between the vanilla ice cream and the spumoni, the spumoni was definitely yummier.

Yelp
The aesthetic was awesome, but the low lighting may be harder for the elderly to see and read the menu. The customer service was ok when I was there with co-workers. The waiter did everything by memory. Which worked somewhat, besides a few minor errors. The minestrone soup is average at best. The fresh bread and cheesy garlic bread was really good. The ice cream is good. I might go back and have a main entree, but it's not a must stop on my list.
