"Eating at the OP Cafe feels like having breakfast at a beachside B&B - there’s a heavy nautical theme, the walls are covered with old photos of the city and its residents, and the staff is incredibly friendly. While there’s no alcohol (turns out your B&B hosts are on the conservative side), the food at this tiny, daytime-only Santa Monica spot is breakfast classics done very well. And you can usually get in without waiting long (or at all)." - brant cox, brett keating

"The OP Cafe, one of Los Angeles’s most popular daytime breakfast and lunch destinations, will be closing permanently this weekend after more than 40 years in business. Located inland in Santa Monica along Ocean Park Boulevard, the bright yellow wood facade building featured eggs, breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, pancakes, and waffles in the morning, followed by burgers, sandwiches, and more, serving a mostly local crowd. Owner and Santa Monica native Mark Verge, who also owns Golden Bull, Ashland Hill, Art’s Table, and Margo’s, said the OP Cafe had not been profitable since the start of the pandemic. Verge said it’s been a challenge to continue operations but that without the support of nearby office workers (Activation Blizzard recently vacated the large office complex across the street after 10 years), the OP Cafe just didn’t have an opportunity to stay in business. The OP Cafe did receive PPP funds and did its best to navigate the pandemic, using the bulk of its funds to pay employees, and even serving as the base of operations for a takeout-only business called Order for Me, where chef Greg Daniels (who oversees Golden Bull) was making things like beef on weck. OP Cafe also set up a sizable covered back patio in an effort to accommodate more outdoor dining. None of those things were enough to combat the loss of steady business due to the office workers and the daily traffic coming into the area. Verge did say that about 20 remaining employees at the OP Cafe will be relocated to his other restaurants, which means no one will be losing jobs despite the closure. Mark and wife Lani Verge acquired the restaurant in 2006 and have owned it since. Originally opened in 1979 as the Ocean Park Cafe, the original owner sold the restaurant to its chef at the time in 1999. That chef then sold it to Mark Verge but did not want to give up the full name of Ocean Park Cafe. Hence the moniker the OP Cafe, which stood in for the beloved neighborhood restaurant. Before Ocean Park Cafe, Verge said the space was more of a bar, but developed into a Santa Monica family favorite in the past few decades. The OP Cafe will serve its final meals on Sunday, September 26. It will have normal hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., though given the history of the restaurant and its place in the Ocean Park neighborhood, expect to see long waits during prime mealtimes." - Matthew Kang

A nice little place with limited indoor seating. Friendly service and relaxed atmosphere. We ordered avocado toast with no egg. It was thick wheat bread well toasted with thick avocado guacamole, a fresh herb (?) and shaved cucumber strips topped with Italian dressing. A few sliced roasted cherry tomatoes were thrown in. It wasn't great, but not bad, either. Maybe adding an egg would have been a good idea. I wouldn't order it again. But, the staff was very nice and it was a cozy place.

A convenient place for breakfast during my stay in Santa Monica. Good food, very friendly and smiling staff. The omelettes are delicious and the yogurt, fruit and granola bowl is delicious!

Yeah, it's from the 40s alright. Someone should share a calendar with them or maybe The Bill of Rights and Civil Rights Amendment. I used to really like going here for lunch a long time go, about 23 years back. I worked across the street at an e-commerce firm that rented offices there. The food was good, the place was busy, hopping with patrons all the time, around the clock. It was after I returned to work late multiple times that I began to notice something... weird about the place. I went back one more time to confirm I hadn't imagined it, and unfortunately, I had been correct. I really liked their chilli cheese dogs and chilli cheese fries as well. They were very good, smoky, and flavorful. The Real Deal. What I noticed? Routinely, when I would place an order it would be reluctantly taken, then the person who took it would immediately demand payment in full before putting the order in to the kitchen. No big deal right? They were swamped, daily. Extremely busy. I do my best to be understanding of people with hard, low paying jobs. I understand, things can be demanding at times. Sometimes I didn't have cash on me so I'd present my debit card, which again was very reluctantly accepted. Meanwhile I saw that people who had arrived 15 minutes to half an hour after I had were seated and eating. Again they were very busy, some things can slip through the cracks in that sort of environment. I tried very hard to be understanding. Then came the last straw. I saw that people of distinctly European descent didn't have to pay until after their orders were ready, though everyone of African descent, as am I, were not allowed to do so. They all had to pay first, then wait, often reminding the staff multiple times that they hadn't yet been served. I didn't cause a scene, I didn't tell any of my coworkers, I didn't sue them. I just... STOPPED GOING THERE. I was more than pleased to go to CARROWS (unfortunately out of business now) which was much closer to my job and had far better service. I worked second shift at my job, in Customer Service. I never had breakfast there, only lunch. I would have gone to CARROWS for breakfast. Interior seating was limited, quite sparse, considering the crowds. There was patio seating on the sidewalk nearby, with minimal shade provided by small trees. If only I could have been fed more quickly. 😒

I've been coming here, on and off, for almost 13 years; in fact, anytime I'm in LA from Canada. The OP is as good as ever moreso since their refurbish/ renno a couple of years ago. Local. Service. Food. 👍

I loved this place for breakfast. I sat at the bar and the service was great. I especially loved that they have authentic chorizo on the menu.

Cute little cafe / restaurant in the neighborhood. Proportions are hearty, and it’s a comfortable spot to come by if you are having a hard time deciding what to get for breakfast or brunch.

I was excited to try this self proclaimed "hidden gem" unfortunately I had some mediocre disappointing service by the staff. Ordered the huevos rancheros with carne asada topping and my friend ordered the french toast with banana nut topping. The huevos rancheros had delicious flavors, the meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. The eggs were a little over cooked but still complimented the meat very well. The banana nut french toast, definitely do not order unless you want to eat stale card board. No egg to keep moist, no flavor, the roasted walnuts were burnt banana was overly ripe. Upon expressing my complaint, one of the servers took my plate back, I presumed to notify my server. The only response i got was, "here is 10% off the french toast". Im no service expert, but I wasn't asked what was wrong or if I would like to order something else. I walked out, still hungry and basically paid full price. Overall, huge disappointment, and I still have to find something to eat...

Very tasty food and good service. I had the machaca con huevos and it was both beautiful and tasty. It's difficult to find a good spot in Santa Monica that is both reasonably priced and well made. The have many good options and it's a cute place to sit and eat.
