The Best Caribbean Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Chef Don Coley opened the original Coley’s in Leimert Park in 1982. He came out of retirement in 2015 and currently operates out of Sherman Oaks. Coley remains fiercely dedicated to making stellar renditions of brown stew chicken, callaloo and saltfish (vegans can order the flavorful callaloo on its own), coco bread, and a cheesy beef patties." - Mona Holmes

4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: June 7 | Eater LA

"Though the Original Coley’s remains one of the best spots for outstanding jerk-spiced chicken, saucy oxtails, and brown stew chicken, its story has been a long road: the family-operated restaurant opened in 1982 in Leimert Park, moved to Slauson Boulevard, occupied a former Tony Roma’s in Inglewood, spent decades in North Hollywood, reopened for catering in 2017 after founder Don Coley retired in 2015, and now resides in Sherman Oaks under the stewardship of his daughter Candice Coley-Thompson and son-in-law Neil Thompson. It’s not uncommon to see the elder Coley cooking or greeting customers who have enjoyed his food for generations, and every entrée comes with patties and sweet dumplings that are a delectable hybrid between cornbread, coco bread, and doughnuts." - Eater Staff

I had to fly all the way from Florida just to see what all the hype was about—and let me tell you, it was worth every second of that five-hour flight. Coley’s isn’t just a restaurant—it’s soul food for the heart and spirit. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with warmth, culture, and a sense of belonging. The vibrant decor, music, and energy feel like a slice of Jamaica, right in L.A. Candice and Neil are the heart behind it all. Their passion, hospitality, and authenticity shine through in every detail. You can feel the love they pour into this place—from the ki, chen to the conversation. They don’t just serve food—they serve legacy. The soursop juice is smooth, fresh, and unforgettable. The food is pure Jamaican comfort—seasoned to perfection and made with real heart. They’ve done it right since 1982, and the legacy is strong. If you're ever near L.A., do yourself a favor and stop by Coley’s. Come hungry, leave full, and feel like family. Much love and respect to Candice and Neil for keeping the culture alive and flavorful. 🇯🇲🔥

Excellent service. The place is a vibe. I usually get fried chicken, which is good. They have a variety of patties and will make them cheese patties for you; they are delicious. Today, I just got some chicken soup because of the weather, and it was good. Much respect.

First time going to The Original Coleys. Decided to eat real Jamaican food before attending Hollywood Bowl for Stephen and Damian Marley Reggae concert. The minute I walked in I felt at home. Our waitress was excellent in making suggestions and our food was so delicious. It tasted homemade and felt it was made with love. Washed it down with a refreshing Ginger Beer. We left with patties and dessert for later on. We were told that the drummer from the band were there earlier, so it must be a good place. We will definitely be returning.

I stopped by this restaurant for lunch and everything was beyond expectations. I found it on google then called to find out if they cooked fish, I was then given the option of placing the order over the phone. From I entered into the restaurant the atmosphere was very pleasant with reggae music jamming not too loudly in the background. The workers were quite welcoming and professional. Let’s skip everything else and go straight to the food , very well presented and served on a plate with knife and fork. The brown stew fish was definitely authentic and portion was perfect, I had a take a break because I was so full before getting to my favorite part “the fish head” . I bought home made sour sop juice, it was so good I had to finish it before the meal came, then I ordered sorrel and oh my I was NOT disappointed at all . The service was amazing and friendly from the ladies behind the counter and my server Neil who checked on my table several times to ensure I was ok. He even brought over the extra items I ordered and offered me a glass of ice for my drinks. Overall a great dining experience and I will definitely be going back

Unfortunately, I have to update my review ( with one less star) and keep it as honest as possible. We ordered food from Coleys recently and went to pick it up. We ordered 4 items and it seemed as if the woman was confused or something as initially she was insisting that the order was complete with only 2 items. We got home only to find liquid all over (inside) one of the bags, and it had leaked onto another container. So it was messy! There was way too much sauce on the rice ( we ordered oxtail and rice), otherwise the oxtail was pretty good. The escovitch fish had A LOT of sauce/seasoning; I have never had such a "soaked" fish and I eat plenty fish, especially when in Jamaica, so I know the true taste. Even if the item "comes with the sauce on it", there is no need to over-saturate. I wiped the fish as much as possible, I could sense it was meant to be tasty but the sauce or whatever was on it tasted like it was vinegar based (and way too much of it); be warned it is far from cheap. There was so much sauce that had leaked that it soaked the festival through and through; needless to say, I had to throw the festival away. We also ordered saltfish fritters. After wiping and squeezing out as much of the oil as possible, the taste wasn't bad, but too much oil was used to fry them! On the other hand, the oxtail meal also had a festival, and my relative said it was good. She also had purchased Coleys ginger drink and enjoyed it, though it is not for the weak, as it has lots of ginger 🫚. She decided to order jerk corn. It looks nothing like what we saw online. Once again, there's way too much sauce on an item. Since when is "jerk" so wet? She hasn't tried it yet as it does not look appealing at all; we may end up throwing it away. Disappointing experience, and the bill was close to $100! Overall, I'd say most food items are okay but with too much sauce. Will I order from them again? Honestly, at this point, I'm not sure.

I absolutely love this restaurant so much. Coleys has been a staple spot for me! I always get either Curry Veggie plate, or Escovietch Fish both are excellent. The flavors are amazing.🌟 I love the atmosphere of the restaurant, the owners are so sweet, definitely get a full experience of Jamaica. 10/10 recommended.💋

This place has a different vibe, very friendly and welcoming. The food was also top-notch! 👌 My husband and I will be visiting again, I love the fact that they have a vegan option that is not seen at most places! Wonderful customer service as well. Keep up the good work! 👍
