Yelp
Booked this hotel due to its proximity to the Moody Center. It was parent's weekend at UT so cost with tax was $900/night. I thought it would be fun to splurge on a luxury hotel for a couple of nights. Do not be fooled, there is nothing luxury about The Otis. We spent 2 nights, and I would never return and never recommend.
Rooms are TINY and very basic. Standard mid-tier hotel mattress and linens, dreadful pillows, and single ply toilet paper. The bed and bedding are standard Marriott quality that you will find at Courtyard or Residence Inn level. Pillows are so bad I woke up both nights with head pain - not a headache, but painful spots on my head caused by the pillows.
Room layout is weird. You open the front door and are standing in the bathroom. Sink on your left and shower and toilet on the right. That means when someone is in the shower, you cannot exit the room without disturbing their privacy. Apparently, all the rooms have this odd floorplan. Furnishings are basic, expect the same fit, fixtures, and decor that you will find anywhere.
Acre 41, the restaurant downstairs is barely mediocre. We ordered the pork chop - was served raw in the middle, Prime Rib - cold, unseasoned, and very, very tough. The prime rib was so tough it was hard to cut. Filet - lacked seasoning but well prepared and tasted good. Mashed potatoes and french fries were good. The apple tart was so old it was hard as a rock on not edible. We threw away at least 70% of that meal.
The positive was the staff were generally nice and accommodating. They had a bottle of wine in our room as a welcome, unfortunately it was spoiled and had to be thrown away. But it was a nice gesture. The little turntables in each room and the vinyl album lending library were a fun touch.
Bottom line is that, at the Otis' price point, I expected a really nice hotel and Otis did not delivery anything close to an upscale experience. Quite honestly, we visit Baylor a lot and the rooms at the Courtyard and Hilton in Waco are actually nicer. The lobby is nice, the people are nice, the location is great so it's a shame that Otis cannot deliver anything more than a tiny, poorly laid out room, crappy bedding, and meh food. I could go on and on about how disappointing this place is, but you get the point. When checkout time came, I couldn't wait to leave, it was that bad.
