Inventive cocktails & global small plates in a cozy retro vibe

"Trying to date on the UWS right now? We await your impending memoir. In the meantime, the Owl’s Tail is a great uptown option if you want to impress someone with a fantastic negroni (and other cocktails). They make three different to-go flask sizes, and you can place your order ahead of time here. Head’s up: Central Park is about ten minutes away from the bar. So if we end up reading about a sunset scene featuring negronis and kissing in the park in your forthcoming memoir, we’re going to ask for a $20 commission." - hannah albertine, nikko duren
"The Owl’s Tail is one of the best places to have some high-quality drinks on the Upper West Side. The bar seats are cushioned, and the cocktails - like the one with vodka, cava, and beet and ginger-flavored ice cubes - are all excellent, but this place still doesn’t feel stuffy. Come here with a date after dinner, or a couple friends when you want someplace (a lot) nicer than Jake’s Dilemma and The Gin Mill a few blocks away." - matt tervooren
"If you need to get a casual drink on the Upper West Side, and you don’t want to wind up in the middle of someone else’s beer pong game, try The Owl’s Tail. It’s a very small cocktail bar that feels a little like a living room, and it’s great for when you need to say audible words to a person in your general vicinity." - bryan kim
"The Upper West Side has a lot of things going for it (like nice parks and a museum full of dinosaur bones), but you probably don’t go out of your way to drink there. If you do find yourself in the area and you want cool place for some low-key cocktails, head directly to The Owl’s Tail. It’s a small place decorated like the common area of a very nice condo building, and it’s just about the exact opposite of Jake’s Dilemma (a nearby bar with foosball and beer pong)." - bryan kim
"There are a lot of bars on the UWS where you can get a beer and watch some sports, but there aren’t many places where you can have a low-key cocktail with a date. So it’s good to know about The Owl’s Tail. It’s a little spot on 75th between Broadway and Amsterdam, and it looks like a living room or a hotel lobby that isn’t actually attached to a hotel. There are a few tables against one wall where you can hang out with a small group, plus a bar in the corner with comfortable velvet barstools. And if you get hungry, you can order some small plates like oysters and wings." - bryan kim, matt tervooren
