Eastern Mediterranean eatery serving wood-grilled dishes & mezze

"The Peacock is an all-day spot in the Austin Proper Hotel Downtown where you can get fancy versions of classic Mediterranean dishes. We like the crispy shallot hummus and curried cauliflower as starters, but the biggest winners here are the tajines and anything that arrives slightly charred and sizzling off the wood-fired grill—like spiced lamb kefta, red pepper chicken thigh, and harissa beef tenderloin. Show up for a light lunch or dinner, or just to see what the inside of the swanky Austin Proper lobby looks like without shelling out a few hundred dollars on a room. There’s also a nice patio overlooking Shoal Creek for when the weather is nice." - nicolai mccrary, matthew jacobs
"Located inside Austin Proper Hotel, the Peacock is a polished spot for upscale Mediterranean fare with a Middle Eastern accent. Dishes like harissa-marinated beef tenderloin and fried cheese saganaki are for sharing. The patio, with views of Shoal Creek, makes it one of Downtown’s more refined places to linger over dinner. The wine list and interior match the elegance." - Darcie Duttweiler
"On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, The Peacock will offer its full menu of fairly classic Mediterranean plates, plus a special Christmas menu. (Last year’s included prime rib and frangipane tarts.) The Downtown spot will be open for lunch and dinner on both days." - nicolai mccrary
"Instead of the standard menu of upscale Mediterranean dishes, on NYE at The Peacock in Downtown Austin you’ll get a five-course prix fixe menu that includes oysters, duck breast, and more. Wine pairings are available, and you can even add on a bit of caviar, if you really want to go all out. There’s also a New Year’s Day brunch the next morning. The deal: $195 for a four-course prix fixe menu, optional wine pairing for $80." - nicolai mccrary
"The downtown Mediterranean restaurant also within the Austin Proper hotel is open for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Along with its usual menu, it’ll offer specials like lamb chops and spiced walnut babka with candied figs and spiced ice cream. There are seatings available from 4 to 10 p.m. each day. Book reservations online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury
