Yafa Cafe, Born in Sunset Park, Is Opening Two New Locations | Eater NY

"At 320 W. 37th Street near Eighth Avenue, the People’s Forum describes itself as a “movement incubator for working class and marginalized communities,” and I note that Yafa Cafe will operate inside as in-house caterers and a public cafe—the team has already started serving coffee there and plans to offer an abbreviated food menu in June." - Emma Orlow

This space may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I wish there were more spaces like this. They offer so amazing programming and bring people together in a grassroots way... this doesn't feel like you cookie cutter, 'we can save the world by signing a petition,' type of cohort or thinkers. If you want silence, there is a library not far away. Check out their website for events/programs taking place here and online. There is a theater space on the lower level. Many books to check out and some for purchase. Community board. Food and drinks are available for purchase as well.

Very nice place to have a coffee and read a book. Positive atmosphere and a welcome smile from the coffee lady*. =)

Came for coffee and to work. I am gay/pan and I didn’t feel very comfortable, felt like the workers were up in my space and breathing down my back. Not a safe space at all. Creepy space. Don’t recommend ⛔️🚫🚫🚫👎🏿

I wish I could say great things about this place. Came over here a couple weeks ago. After reading great reviews. But I was very disappointed with the staff. The staff were very rude. Not helpful at all. I’m not sure what’s the deal but. I felt I was Treating like garbage. I’m sorry this place not for me. And I would never recommend others to visit this place.

If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together. ~Lilla Watson

Great space for people to speak their mind, read books, and hold meetings. We need more spaces like this in NYC.

Yelp
Horrible and overpriced, do not recommend! So many matter places in the city, no wonder their rating is so low

Yelp
Loveliest space ever. Kind of mad I didn't know about it earlier. I walked in and was immediately greeted by my flag, the Cuban flag. I went for an art build and meeting for PYM hosted in the people's forum. Their space is gorgeous and welcoming, I was able to gift a very meaningful poster of an artwork by the artist Heba Zagout, aunt and sister to my dear friends. Affordable and delicious coffee, friendly and empowering members. Can't wait to come back Monday and hopefully get to hold an event for my small art collective there someday!!!

Yelp
Stopped in for some happy hour cocktails on a walk and had some $7 soju cocktails to go! They were refreshing and delicious. Atmosphere was calm and nice as well as the area is multipurpose use. Would go again if passing by!

Yelp
I was excited to try this place out when I was in NY but was hugely disappointed. Not sure where they source their beans? New Jersey maybe? Had To go to Starbucks down the street. Big disappointment.

Yelp
I came here on a Tuesday evening for a Farm School Information Session. 1. I Can Not Believe I never Knew This Place Existed 2. I Must Go Back! Such a nice and flexible space 3. The people working the cafe section were amazing! 4. The prices are affordable and I devoured the Pasta Special of the Day.... like in 4 mins... while standing 5. Nope I didn't take a picture because I ate it tooo fast 6. If you don't have good energy Stay Away... pretty pretty please... So yup I'll be back. Thank you Peoples Forum

Yelp
I have to preface this review by stating that I was impressed by the way TPF handled the event I attended, a discussion between Chris Hedges and Max Blumenthal about the latter's most recent book, The Management of Savagery. That event, with the exception of an in-store demonstration by a supporter of the FSA, came off without a hitch. And while I admire their ability to host an event that showcases perspectives that are consciously censored by the military industrial/media complex, I do think that The People's Forum has a very limited, niche appeal. Primarily, to hard core leftists/socialists/Marxists. If that's your thing, then you'll probably enjoy this "incubator."
