Two Bay Area Contenders Enter the ‘Top Chef’ Thunderdome for Season 22 | Eater SF

"A one-Michelin-star restaurant in St. Helena where the chef de cuisine brings a pedigree that includes graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and stints at high-profile kitchens such as NoMad and Eleven Madison Park. The chef, a Massapequa, New York native, also has notable competitive credentials: he placed first at the Ment’Or Young Chef Competition, joined Team USA at the 2017 Bocuse d’Or (where the team won a gold medal), and served on that Bocuse d’Or team alongside chef Philip Tessier, whom he later joined at this restaurant as chef de cuisine." - Dianne de Guzman

Absolutely loved this cafe and will def be back! Excellent customer service! There’s street parking and if you park further the walk isn’t too bad. Great food selection and pastries! The coffee and lattes were good we had to get another round when we were headed out. It spacious to sit for a few and relax, and there’s also outlets if you would like to work/study. Good music selection too!

Google
I absolutely love Perk and Press! It’s a great spot for working remotely or meeting up! The coffee is excellent and there are so many fun flavors. My favorite by far is the horchata latte! The food is also awesome. I think it’s the best tuna salad sandwich I’ve ever had! Everyone is really lovely and the service is fast. Definitely recommend!

Google
Great place for coffee, breakfast, and lunch! Staff is friendly and service was quick. We got the Milky Way and crème brûlée lattes and they tasted amazing. We also split the pequa sandwich which hit the spot. Definitely will be coming back here. Plenty of street parking and parking in the back.

I went to The Perk & Press for lunch. The staff behind the counter were very friendly and helpful. I have never been before so I asked what sandwiches they recommend. I ended up ordering the Jamaican Blue, It was excellent! The baguette bread was so good! To drink I had a white peach sweetened iced tea which was very refreshing and delicious. While I was there people never stopped coming in, which to me was a good sign. I definitely recommend trying The Perk & Press and I will certainly be a returning customer!

Google
Such a cute little spot! Excellent food, service, and drinks!! I’ve always been a huge fan of the Perk’s coffee shop that’s also nearby and when I heard of this place, I knew I had to give it a go. I ordered an Italian Roast pork sandwich and it tasted absolutely amazing. The vibe of this place is certainly homey and comfortable. The price is very good as well. Ordered two sandwiches, two large coffees, and a pastry and it didn’t break the bank. Would recommend this place to anyone who’s in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat!

Google
A great addition to the neighborhood! A great casual lunch spot! Order your food from the amazing menu, go sit down wherever you'd like and the food is brought out to you piping hot! The French Onion Soup was the best I've had and the Pequa sandwich has some really nice flavors, just be sure to ask for more red pepper sauce on the side! So yummy and a great atmosphere. Bring your friends or a laptop for some quiet time!

Google
Have you been looking for a hometown coffee shop that just happens to be a full service breakfast and lunch spot with savory food items? Come to Massapequa, specifically The Perk & Press. It’s a charming little place on Broadway, just north of the train station, right next to Marcels Custom Kitchens and Baths. In the morning hours you’ll see the hustle and bustle of train goers, teachers & students on their way to school and professionals stopping in for their favorite coffee blends. I’m going to suggest stopping by for lunch! Today I had “The Pequa.” It’s Parmesan crusted chicken, covered with spinach & artichoke dip and a roasted red pepper sauce, then tucked in between two slices of buttery toasted sourdough…super delicious, ask for extra napkins! The chefs are top notch, the workers are so helpful and knowledgeable. Chefs kiss!

Yelp
The Perk & Press - Massapequa, NY What a gem! Stopped in for breakfast/brunch and was so glad we did. The space has a cozy, welcoming vibe with a modern café feel, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. We ordered a The Petra Bowl, the Noyo, and the Tuna Salad Sandwich. The sandwiches came on hearty multigrain bread, perfectly toasted and packed with flavor--mine had egg, veggies, and melty cheese, and it was filling but not heavy. The Petra bowl was colorful and fresh with Moroccan eggplant, hummus, ricotta, tomatoes, cucumbers, and greens, with warm bread on the side. Everything was seasoned beautifully and felt made with care. The quality of the ingredients really stood out--it's not your average café food, but thoughtfully prepared and super tasty. Also loved the presentation, which made the meal even more enjoyable. Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area--this is the kind of spot that makes you want to linger over coffee and good food. Fresh, tasty, and very good

Yelp
The Perk and Press feels like a hidden poem in the middle of the day, a place where time slows just enough for you to breathe it all in. The moment I stepped inside, I felt it all. The warmth, comfort, and that soft buzz of good energy that only truly special spaces have. The lighting, the music, the gentle hum of conversation. It all blends into a kind of quiet magic. But the real moment of poetry came in a cup: their chai. Rich, golden, and alive with spice. It was like autumn wrapped in silk. The flavor danced between bold and soothing, layered with cinnamon and cardamom, with just enough sweetness to make you close your eyes after the first sip. It was crafted, not made. Like someone took the time to understand what chai should be. There's a soul to this place. A rhythm. A reason to linger. I'll be coming back, again and again, for the vibes, the people, and yes, that chai.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem for sure! The food, the drinks, the staff... everything was just perfect! There was a line that went quickly when we first got there. It's a cute little cafe that you would totally pass by if you didn't know the goodness that was inside! The staff was super helpful when I couldn't decide what I wanted-- 1) because everything sounded so good and 2) because they had SO many options! We didn't try any of the sweet treats but will be back again. We went with coffee and sandwiches, which were delicious! The only downside was that we had to wait for a table to open up for the 3 of us, but even that went quickly while I was deciding on what to get! The food was fresh, the flavors were amazing and definitely a level up from your typical cafe. I got the Jamaican grilled chicken sandwich with the spicy aioli on the side. It came with a delicious slaw inside and really hit the spot. My two friends both got the same sandwich, the Pequa which was chicken cutlet with a spinach dip topping. The fries were SO GOOD! And my friends enjoyed their meal. They have a ton of options for drinks with every kind of milk and creamer you could imagine! I will definitely be back for more!!

Yelp
Very cute coffee shop that also offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches. They have a big list of coffee flavors so there's something for everyone! I ordered the blueberry crumble iced coffee which was delicious! The food smelled very good so I will definitely be back for food and another flavor iced coffee. The staff is very nice and helpful as well. It's right by the train station so it's a great spot to stop at while waiting for your train.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! The decor is warm and cozy. The food is fresh, tasty, beautifully presented and made with love. The staff work incredibly well together! Customers are greeted with a smile, servers are efficient, personable and genuinely happy to serve. The dining room is spotless and the staff are readily available to take away dirty dishes and wipe down tables. If you are in the mood for a sweet treat I suggest you go early. Everything is freshly made and does well out.

Yelp
Great newer coffee/brunch spot in massapequa. Same owner as the perk and jammy and features some great quality food and coffee. When you walk in you order your food and coffee at the counter and then choose whether to dine in or take out. They have a decent size seating area as well as a few arm chairs. My wife and I split the vincenzo and Giuseppe flat breads. Both were cooked well and tasty. The coffee is also very good as is the wheat grass shots, which is a nice extra bonus. Definitely recommend for brunch or just to grab some coffee.

Yelp
The food is fresh and full of flavor, the bread they use tastes very fresh and has the perfect amount of crunch. I had the jerk chicken sandwich which was really flavorful. Their coffee is amazing as well and they have so many styles and flavors to choose from. The first time I went I just knew I had to go back and try the whole menu. Can't wait to go back again.

Yelp
I was able to check out Perk and Press today which is a sister location of The Perk and it was phenomenal! Let's start with the food (10/10). I tried the French fries which were very unique as far as the cut but were perfectly crispy along with the chicken fingers. I also had a hazelnut pastry that was filled with Nutella which was also superb. I also tried the PB&J soup and yes it's exactly what you think it is- my taste buds are still confused as to why it was so delicious. It's a butternut squash base with peanut butter and grapes on top. Trust me it's worth a try! They have tons of flavors for coffee but they also have wine on top for those looking for a mid-day drink. The ambiance (10/10). It is the perfect blend of a coffee shop/lunch spot with tons of seating. The space is beautifully decorated and can also be a good place to get some work done. Service (10/10). The service was great and the staff was able to give great descriptions of the menu items. Our food also came out very quickly and they were on top of cleaning off the table. I shall be back!!

Yelp
Hot Coffee. Nice selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Spacious seating. Clean. Friendly service. Another potential local gem!

Andrew D.

Yelp
Went here for brunch. Espresso was quite good and a nice selection of quick and delicious food options. Wife had a breakfast sandwich and took half to go.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to this place opening for awhile when I had seen the signs first coming up, and I finally got my chance to stop on for a late breakfast and some coffee. The wait was worth it, I have nothing but good things to say about this place. For a Café, there is way more seating than typical which is already a huge plus for me. The decor is nothing flashy but lights are kept a little dim and the music is nice, low and ambient to let you chat with whoever you may be with with ease. I had a French toast muffin, something brand new to me and it was delicious. They had a number of others to choose from that I was interested in as well, along with a decent menu of other hot breakfast and lunch items that looked to be just as tasty from what I saw on other patrons' plates. But let's be real the real name of the game here is their coffee. And not only is it good, but they have enough flavor options to make your head spin if that's your vibe. I went with pistachio and white chocolate, "the Sicilian kiss" and was pleasantly surprised at the robust flavor while not being overly sweet. Staff were both very kind and quick to serve. Parking can be a little weird, but there are side streets and a few municipal lots close by that don't make it too much of an issue. There's a lot of competition for coffee places popping around Nassau and Suffolk, but this place really won me over. Would make for a great date spot or even just a relaxing place to work for a bit if you needed a change of scenery. Looking forward to coming back here and trying out even more of what this place has to offer.

Yelp
We walked in and were greeted right away! The establishment is very clean and well-maintained, and everyone who worked there was extremely friendly! We ordered the marshmallow latte and the green mint iced tea. I really like that they had a little board with weekly flavor suggestions, because sometimes you just don't know what you want! Our pup was also with us, and they were so accommodating, we had asked and they had given her a little pup cup and they were so kind about it. The inside is also pretty spacious, it would be an ideal spot to have coffee with a friend or with a group. Overall great experience, we will be back!!!

Jim K.

Yelp
Delicious espresso drinks and excellent food. We tried a couple of their doughnuts and they were phenomenal. We also had eggs on a croissant that were delicious. The interior is beautiful and well laid out. Plenty of seating when we came. The competition should just shut down now.

Yelp
I'm so glad I got to stop in. This sister location to Massapequa Perk brings menu favorites in a larger space. The service is pleasant as always and I can't wait for my next visit.

Yelp
Came to try this place because of the high Yelp ratings. And I can say they are legit. Friendly, but most importantly, efficient staff. My food was fast, hot and delicious. Had the "No Yo" egg white breakfast sandwich, which was simply scrumptious. Fluffy egg whites, quality other ingredients, on multigrain bread toasted to perfection. Excellent coffee also. Plenty of seating at cleaning tables. Yes, prices are a little high, but worth it given the overall service and quality.

Victoria P.

Yelp
Love perk and press!! Get a coffee there as often as I can! As a busy mom of a newborn the only thing that would be better is curb side pick up haha but I absolutely love their coffee, their food is so good and the workers are so friendly! My fave is an iced creme brûlée latè! As of last summer, my new Fave place to meet up with a friend or go with my family!

K G.

Yelp
The french dip sandwich is amazing. One of the best i've had. Well worth the money. The Au Jus sauce is beyond tasty

Yelp
I really enjoyed coming here, the food was tasty and I had the pequa chicken sandwich and added the pasta salad it was all delicious and I had a traditional cafe late (medium) and added sugar. The late was awesome . I would totally recommend this place to anyone, especially on a day off where you want to take it slow or possibly sit with a good friend and kick back on memories of old.

Kennedeigh J.

Yelp
The coffee is good but the man with the dark curly hair is disgustingly rude to customers. He placed my coffee down without saying a word so I kindly asked if it was mine a few minutes later and he replied "THATS URS. THATS BEEN URS!!!!" all angry. It was shocking. Not coming back.

Yelp
Very impressed with both the food and the service! Was there for lunch and tried the Pequa sandwich and the BLT, both were great! Full of flavors! And the fries were amazing!!! The staff were so friendly, they came to check on us several times. This place has a very chilled vibe and I would love to go back to try a cup of coffee. Who knows, maybe this will become a nice hangout place!

Dmarienne C.

Yelp
20/10 never disappoints! I love their lentils soup. Really friendly people and really relaxing music.
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
The food here is very good, and my wife who is at Starbucks every day says that the coffee here is better. The fries are on a different level. Definitely worth a try. Very friendly staff also.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is great. It just opened and is honestly one of the best coffee shops I've been to. Starbucks definitely has some competition lol. The coffee and food is amazing. All the food is better quality than most delis, and it's all made in house. Everything is really good quality with low prices. The service is also really great, the employees as well as the owners are super nice. It's also extremely clean and well maintained.
google avatar

Joyce G.

Yelp
Love the grilled cheese and pumpkin bisque soup! They have an amazing array of coffee's.

Ajin D.

Yelp
First time here today and omg the Pequa Sandwich is to die for! The service was great, super busy place so you know the foods great! I have to bring my husband here!
google avatar

Jean A.

Yelp
Modern new and clean place. Staff friendly and welcoming great service. Exactly what Massapequa needs with room to sit. Next time I'll try the bacon breakfast sandwich and change the biscuit (dry & crumbly) for the baguette. Also I need to remember to order my caramel coffee extra sweet and light. If you like your coffee extra hot this is your place

Laura K.

Yelp
This place is my new go-to. The staff is genuinely nice, service is quick (which is KEY since it's close to train station!), and the prices are so reasonable. They also have quite a few GF options on the menu and the manager (owner?) is very knowledgeable about the ingredients and cooking process. Definitely give this spot a try!

Conor M.

Yelp
Great coffee flavors. Sicilian kiss is a good choice for flavoring. Ambiance inside is very comfortable to sit and eat or work.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
I've gone for lunch two times in a week and the quality is top notch. It hits the spot every time. I've tried the Michelangelo pizza, French dip, fries and plain pizza flatbread. The fries are awesome and different

Courtney M.

Yelp
Soooo Yelp-worthy! We had The Pequa sandwich, and a cup of lentil soup (accompanied by a delish, fresh pretzel stick). Also grabbed a hot, Nutella coffee on the way out that was incredible. The sandwich was the best sandwich I've had in months - compliments to the chef! The vibes are so peaceful and cozy. I cannot wait to come back to try some more items!
google avatar

Bonnie P.

Yelp
They're very good when I come to their coffee. If you're a matcha person just know the matcha they use tastes very diluted. The staff is very welcoming. The girl with the short blonde hair makes my drinks the best; very happy when I see she's in. The ambiance in the store is really nice, chill and dim.

Russell D.

Yelp
Omg wow this place is kind, quaint and delicious. Their bread was amazing and the BLT is the right amount of bite and flavor. 10/10 would come again!

James S.

Yelp
Attractive spot with reasonable prices and prompt service. My wife's iced American had weak flavor. Otherwise everything was good.

Coleen C.

Yelp
Great service. Friendly staff. Good food and great selection of coffees and teas. Great addition to the neighborhood and I will be back for sure!

Britney G.

Yelp
Great place to do some work and they have delicious coffee. Really cute inside with lots of seating. Love all the different coffee flavors you can choose from too.

Joe M.

Yelp
A great new spot for coffee or a quick bite to eat. The choice in coffee is amazing, the sandwiches are more than solid and the wait staff is super nice.

Phil L.

Yelp
Food and coffee were phenomenal! Had the Pequa Sandwich paired with French Onion soup. Stole some of my wife's fries, everything was completely dialed in. Staff was courteous and attentive would definitely recommend

Kristen V.

Yelp
The food and coffee here are absolutely delicious every single time and the staff is so helpful, attentive and kind. A new favorite for us!

Dee S.

Yelp
Honestly I only had a Latte - I was checking out the place for future time! The young ladies behind the counter were very sweet kind n helpful. It was around 3:30 n they were closing at 4 pm so not much traffic - but I did notice how clean the establishment was n how fresh the goodies looked, their lunch menu looked very appetising n the overall space is large but inviting compared to the other surrounding coffee cafes that have sprung up in close proximity. Met the Owner Pete - very cordial n welcoming'. Looking forward to returning for lunch next time around. Give it a try - you'll find it a nice addition to our Massapequa community.

Pat N.

Yelp
Food and coffee were amazing! Service was awesome and everyone was very attentive. A fine new addition to Massapequa! Will definitely be going back
