This little bakery was my go-to payday treat when I worked in the area 20 years ago. If my memory serves me, their signature Black Forest cake was just over $2.50 a slice back then. The cherries were soaked in real rum, and it felt like a steal for the quality. It was frequently featured in the media at the time. I decided to check it out again (Sep 2025) since I was in the area.
I had only planned to get the Black Forest cake, but they now have so many new flavours that it was hard to walk away with just one. I also got their SG60 special, Putu Hitam. Both slices were priced at $4.10. While not exactly cheap for a neighborhood bakery, the price is fair when you consider the quality of the rum-soaked cherries, fresh cream, and authentic flavours. I decided to eat the cake at a nearby hawker center because I knew these cakes don't travel well.
I'm glad I got two slices. The Black Forest cake, unfortunately, was stale. I know this for certain because the sponge cake layers of the Putu Hitam were so much moister and softer. Also, perhaps my taste buds are more discerning now, I could also taste a lower-quality, velvety aftertaste from the chocolate shavings on the Black Forest cake. The rum-infused berries were still good, and the sweetness of the cream was well balanced. It's such a shame that I picked a stale one. The Putu Hitam, on the other hand, was much better than I expected.
Overall, it was a hit-and-miss experience, but I still give it 4 stars for nostalgic reasons. While they have many other bakes, I'd say just stick to the fresh cream cakes which they are known for.
Based on recent reviews, it seems they have gained traction from a viral post. To those who have just "discovered" this place, manage your expectations, and you might be in for a pleasant surprise.
