"The Pink Elephant Room, a new Washington Avenue dive bar named for drunken hallucinations, has officially opened its doors. The bar aims to be a laid-back neighborhood spot, complete with a jukebox and pool table. The space features saucy neon signs, a ceiling lit up with shimmering stars, and a mural of the bar’s pink elephant mascot. It serves cocktails from the 1952 book A Guide to Pink Elephants, alongside wine and beers. The new 40-foot-long bar was installed in a building dating back to the 1930s, which was formerly a music venue named Mary Jane’s. The Pink Elephant Room is open daily from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Amy McCarthy

"Samuel English plans to debut The Pink Elephant Room at 4218 Washington Avenue either at the end of this month or early next. The historic 1930s art deco building formerly housed famed Mary Jane’s music venue and has mostly maintained its original features, although English has added a 40-foot-long bar, maroon booths, and decorative accents in gold and light pink. A mural of his drunken pink elephant mascot will take center stage — “pink elephant” being a euphemism for a drunken hallucination. English envisions the “casual hangout bar” as a pseudo-dive that’s “nice but not too nice.” To that end, he’ll have a pool table and a juke box on the premises as well. Drinkers will find three or four signature cocktails from the 1952 cocktail recipe book A Guide to Pink Elephants, along with 6 or 8 craft beers on draft, 10 bottled beers, and couple of wine options. “People need a place to hang out and drink where they don’t have to stand in line or go to a goofy Kung Fu-themed bar,” English explains, bemoaning the influx of trendy bars from elsewhere, like Austin’s Kung Fu Saloon. When The Pink Elephant Room debuts, it’ll operate from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily." - Alaena Hostetter

There aren't a lot of bars on Washington that I've liked going to repeatedly, but this place is awesome. The drinks are fun, the bartenders are cool, and I love cozying up with friends in one of the booths. I think that is the main appeal of this place - it is a spot to meet up with your friends. The back patio tables are big enough for several people to hang out at once, and the booths inside accommodate 4 people comfortably. With trivia on Tuesdays and karaoke on Thursdays, I've had great weeknight entertainment, but I'm always impressed with what they've got lined up on the weekends as well. This is a great bar to come to Houston, and a good way to get out of the usual montrose-midtown-downtown pattern.

This bar is just ok. It can't seem to decide if it's a dive bar or an upscale cocktail bar. We went on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty. The sign said it was sixties night, but the music they were playing didn't seem to match the theme. The cocktail menu was interesting, but the drinks weren't particularly well executed.

Casual/dive-like ambiance, very unassuming exterior, but the cocktails we tried were actually really interesting and delicious! The Yazuka Highball with Kavalan whiskey and yuzu coconut lime soda was amazing and the Dumbo Trip with Amarula, white rum, strawberry, and popcorn was simultaneously complex and fantastic! We didn’t expect to be so impressed with a place that seems to be marketing itself as a super chill, accessible, local dive. Love it!!

This is a very very relaxed place. Super awesome to come to chill at if you're a local to this area. Nothing like all the rumbling bars. It's more mature and laid back. Come in, have a drink, you can actually talk (not yell). I've been back a few times.

I Liked the atmosphere and music. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because I ordered a drink (ciroc cranberry) that I’ve been drinking for years. Saw the bartender making the drink with Ciroc but the drink did not taste anything like ciroc. I went next door to get the same type of drink and I actually got a ciroc and cranberry drink.

This bar seems to be struggling, there were only two other people here at 9:30pm on a Friday. We ordered a frozen drink special, it was watermelon basil and it was awful. Seemed like the watermelon was rotten we could barely drink it and did not finish it, I suggest avoiding this drink!!

Pretty cool atmosphere and the staff are really nice. Drinks are little pricey but well worth it because the cocktails are delicious.
