15 Houston Steak Nights to Slice Into

"Remodeled from an early rustic 1900s cantina, this Sunset Heights beer and wine garden hosts its steak night on Tuesdays, where they showcase various cuts of beef like filet, NY strip, and rib-eyes (market priced from $29 to $95), plus chicken breasts ($14), which are all cooked over post oak wood. Pony up for a chimichurri-topped steak; choose one of its $6 sides, and pair it with a Malbec or Saison." - Brittany Britto Garley, Sean Hekmat

First Ward’s Spring Street Beer & Wine Garden Is Closed, But Not For Long - Eater Houston

"Known for its lively steakhouse, charming patio area, and its beer and wine offerings, the bar released a statement on its Instagram in late May, announcing that it would close on Tuesday, June 19, but gave little explanation for its closing. 'It was a hard decision to close the bar, our customers became like a family, and it was an honor for us to have you,' the bar owners wrote. 'Thank you for making Spring Street Beer & Wine Garden a place where everyone could feel at home.'" - Brittany Britto Garley

Dog friendly! ❤️ The bartenders are super helpful in helping you make a wine selection. They will ask you some questions and let you try something based on what you said. They have hit the nail on the head each time for me. The food is also yummy. The burger is good, fries are very seasoned. Mac and cheese is delicious. The steak is delicious. There is also games you can play at your table. It feels nice and intimate in there, like you’re eating at someone’s house. New favorite place for me.

Google
This place was incredible! I absolutely loved the Chicken Quesadilla , fries were on point! And the bartender!! He was so friendly and fun. Our date was incredible here. It was our first time but I will be sure to recommend it to everyone!!

Google
The BEST hidden spot in the Heights ! I know we all want to keep it a secret but you got to see it to believe it!! Would not know from outside but the VIBE is great after work ! My fav the tacos but everyone talks about the steak and the burgers. I run here after a hard day ! I love that they remember you and bring your favorite bottle ready and tastee !!!! Don’t crowd when I’m here please but do come because it’s the spot ! Prices are on point and low but who care because the food taste so good who cares !

Google
This place was amazing. I absolutely loved the brie grilled cheese sandwich, fries were on point, and let me tell you, that bartender was so awesome. I think his name was Sergio? He was so friendly and fun. He lowered the music for us so we could hear ourselves talk, and he went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. Our group had so much fun here. It was our first time but I will be sure to recommend it to anyone in the area

Google
I love local places like this, where the patrons and staff are fun and interesting, and the food is really good. I rarely get a steak but was in the neighborhood and it was steak night, so ‘when in Rome’. The NY Strip and salad were both really good. The filet looked good, as did the burger.

Google
Never judge a book by its cover, stumbled on this gem on a date night with hubby, now it is one of out favs!! Food is soooo good, wine knowledge on point, price on wines go from $$-$$$$ and beers are cold.

Google
Update 03/2024.... This is officially the best burger in HTown! Wow! Very surprised by this place. According to the signs this place has only been open since 2020 so we'd never even heard of it. Found it on Google maps when searching for beer gardens in town. They have a huge selection of wine and a decent selection of beer. The bartender was amazing. She helped up pick a wine from their extensive cellar based on our preferences. There are dart boards and games as well. Menu was a surprise. Steaks, tacos, and burgers. We had a steak and a burger. Both were delicious and cooked to perfection. They have steak night on Tuesday where the steaks are a bit cheaper. Wednesday is pasta night, I believe it's the only day they serve pasta. Burger was top notch smash style burger with grilled onions. Very juicy and flavorful. Steak was cooked to medium perfectly. These guys know what they're doing. Very chill neighborhood bar. Put it on the list, you won't regret it.

Google
I edited my previous post to clarify the circumstances of the issue. This was our third visit to The Post on a Wednesday night, taking advantage of their Pasta night special, offering two pastas and a bottle of wine for $47 total. In previous visits, I asked to add beef to my pasta, which involved a reasonable upcharge of $7.99. We placed the same order with the bartender and I asked for the same beef add-on on this visit. However, this time we where shocked to find out a charge of $50 on top of the regular $47 when we got the bill. To clarify: the add on beef was more expensive than the entire meal for two! yet the server never mentioned it when he took our order. Whether a mistake or carelessness, to err is human and forgivable. Yet when such an expensive mistake is made it is reasonable to expect a voluntary refund to correct, and when it was not offered we paid the bill and left. Regarding the owners response below: in your initial response on Google you asked me to call you, so you can make amends. I appreciated that and called three times, but you never got back to me. Moreover, instead of addressing the issue in your establishment you changed your post here to demonize me. What a shame.

Scott

Yelp
Best burger in the heights. Argue with your mama. Coolest bartenders. Bring your dog & your kids & your grandma too.

Dena D.

Yelp
This place is like the TV show "Cheers". Where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came. Been coming here since they opened. Owners and staff are the sweetest. They have great service and great food. Pasta night is my absolute favorite but don't sleep on their steak or the Brie grilled cheese. Yum!

Yelp
It was small and quaint however, the parking was a little confusing just because how small the area is for parking. The atmosphere was very laid-back as if you were going to someone's house for a meal and waiter was not rude. It looks like he was taking orders and running the bar as well. Whoever the chef is quick on their feet. They had to make some adjustment to our selection because the limit on ingredients. you could tell it's a local neighborhood favorite for drinking wine, cocktails and watching TV.

Douglas

Yelp
Bartender was too busy playing DJ and catering to his friend to bother with customers. Let my beer overflow, then handed me half of it like that was fine. Spoiler: it's not. Won't be back. One drink and done.

Yelp
The steak is great, I recommend. The service was awesome, the bartenders were nice. The ambiance was light, but uplifting. I loved the intimacy if the restaurant. I do not recommend the Mac and cheese, it looks and taste like Kraft right out the box.
google avatar

Austin W.

Yelp
We love this place! Parking is a little limited but it's worth it for the charm of the interior, delicious menu and great bartenders - not to mention the wide selection of wines. The vibes are immaculate. It's like dive bar met upscale wine bar and it's the perfect mix of cozy and casual. Lastly- get the burger.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I'm on a hunt for the best restaurant to work from as I'm working remote. My review is based on factors for a good place to work from and not necessarily the drinks or food. Overall great restaurant for work and drinks. Noise level - 60db quiet conversation Wifi speed - 111 down 127 up (zoom meeting friendly) Power plugs - Unsure. Did not manage to see. Seats - 30-40 indoors Parking - free 10 lots and more on street AC indoors was cold like in 60F. The staff were friendly but the food took around 20 minutes to get ready. The food is delicious and flavour is on point. Happy hour wine at $6 from 4pm-6pm is great. I'd not recommend the outdoor seating as the flies and mosquitoes are annoying.
google avatar

A K.

Yelp
Food is fine and a decent wine selection. Nice outdoors space to hang out and have a drink, but it can get very buggy depending on the season.

Yelp
What a gem! It was Yelp ftw on this one. After hurricane Beryl a lot of places are still closed due to no power, and it's hard to find a place to eat other than what you stocked up on. I literally called Burger Bodega, Toasted Coconut, Rodeo Goat, and maybe a few others that I can't remember atm, but no one was answering until...The Post Beer and Wine Garden! Clearly, I was craving a burger and fries. Haha. I was told that they are quick to open after a storm and also have backup generators. Good for them!! So, we drove here since it was 9 minutes down from where we live. It is across from Lei Low and a block from one of my favorite Mexican restaurants , Puebla's. There's ample parking on a gravel lot, and I was able to find an open spot. The place has plenty of seating indoor and outdoor. Love the white picnic benches under the covered patio. You place your order at the bar using the QR code. It was popping for a Wednesday night post hurricane. I think people just wanted great comfort food and A/C. Tuesdays are steak nights, and I overheard they had tomahawk steaks the night before. Wednesdays are pasta nights with wine. The bartender explained to a customer that it was worth buying a wine bottle than 3 glasses of wine. Very cost effective and appreciated his honesty. Not gonna lie, but I wanted to try a lot of other items on the menu. I was on a mission though. Needed to focus on the burger and fries, so my date and I ordered cheeseburgers that came with fries. We sat at the bar which was a nice touch cause the Stros game was on the large screen. I will say that the counter stools are lower than the bar top, which makes it a little trickier to eat for a shortie like me. Haha. I dealt with it, so no biggie! We added an extra of sautéed jalapeños with our burgers. Didn't have to wait long. The food is made to order in the little trailer outside. Most people were ordering cheeseburgers, pasta, or a ribeye. Mmm. All sounded and looked great! The cheeseburger was a double patty smash burger that came with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and mustard. I asked for mayo on the side. I expected the cheeseburger to be huge because of the description, but it wasn't. Perfectly fine cause it filled me up! It was packed with flavor and had the right amount of spice with the added jalapeños. I'm all about good fries, and the seasoning was great. From photos of other reviewers, it seems like they switch it up sometimes from crinkle to not. Either way, I'm sure it's great. We loved the food, and if my date said "great choice" then I'll take it cause he's a CDC (Chef de Cuisine). I told him that Yelp never fails me. ;) There's a few beers on tap, beer cans, wine, soda cans, and water. The ambiance is great. It's a chill space. Not expecting all the space from the outside. You can get darts to play. It is dim like other reviewers mentioned, and I saw one of the bartenders dim it more from a switch at the bar as the night went on. You could tell customers who were regulars cause they knew them by name. Service was excellent, and everyone was so friendly. I definitely want to try steak night here, as well as their other food items! Thank you for being open for great food and fellowship!

Yelp
Let me preface this with 'we were very hungry'. In this instance, the camera was not going to eat first! The Post had been recommended to us several time in the past, but rarely are we on this side of Heights. This day was the perfect opportunity. I had my days mixed up and sold my husband on the idea that it was steak night, when, in fact, steak night was the night prior. BUT lucky foe us, The Post serves steak every night! It's unpretentious, and I'm here for it. I'm also here for the food! Don't let the outward appearances fool you. This place is legit. Super easy to get to off Main/I-45. Ample parking. Indoor/outdoor seating (but it's August in SE Texas). Service was on point. The bartender recommended great reds to accompany our steaks. The wine list offers many great options. And my other favorite part: they're dog-friendly! They have specials throughout the week. We are eager to go back for pasta night next! *please forgive the basic photo skills.

Yelp
Another new place tried and liked. Bartenders, wait staff, managers, owners - all very nice and welcoming. They have a nice wine and beer selection, but know their non-alcoholic selection is very limited. Impressed with their menu items - we ordered appetizers, tacos, mac and cheese and a dessert. Highly recommend the brie grilled cheese - bites or sandwich - and the pretzel beignets. Also, Tuesday night is steak night. I'm not a red meat eater, but the outdoor grill area smelled REALLY good!

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday night after having some drinks across the street at Lei Low. It's such a great neighborhood bar with lots of seatings, a large bar area, and good food and a wonderful wine selection. It is a Beer and Wine Garden, there's no liquor. There's games like jenga and a selection of table top games you can choose from to play with your buddies. We played darts, drank beer, and shared a juicy cheeseburger with some crispy fries. I would like to return during steak night. The restrooms were clean, staff was friendly and polite. Overall good vibes.

Yelp
I visited here one Sunday since I was passing through the area and saw they had such a high yelp rating, but also, more importantly, a really good burger. This is more of a bar than it is a restaurant, so I don't know if it's really kid friendly. I was able to find a parking spot right in front and walked inside. The bar area is in the lower level of the building, and it is sort of remodeled inside. The ceilings are still short, though. They have a QR code at the bar to access the menu, and when you do, you'll see they have a small menu. They also have daily specials, but one thing to keep in mind is they don't have liquor...only beer and wine. Hence the name Post Beer & Wine Garden. I sat next to a couple of regulars at the bar who mentioned they have great food, even though the outside, and inside for that matter, is nothing to write home about. They were talking about white table cloth quality food, especially the wood-fired steaks. I ordered the smash cheeseburger with no cheese. They don't have anything but american cheese. The French fries are your garden variety frozen fries. The burger was really great and blows away any of the fast food smash burgers out there. It comes with delicious caramelized onions. I was not fond of the frozen fries, but an establishment like this is just unlikely to serve fresh cut fries.....especially here in Houston. Great atmosphere, you'll be sure to run into mostly locals that live in the area..the bartender was super friendly and let me pick a song to play. I will make it a point to return to try their wines, which are supposed to be really good, as well as the highly recommended steaks.

Yelp
I really love this place!!! Best cheeseburgers in town NO kidding ! the service is great , very knowledgeable on wine and i love the vibe there every time . Plus they take care of the kitty that lives there and that makes me happy!
google avatar

Christo A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot - great to grab a meal and drinks w/friends. Steak is a solid option and they serve natural wine as well. Recommend!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
This place has great chill vibes but also has great quality wine and food. I've enjoyed going there to read a book alone a glass of wine, a girl's night, or on a date night. I had gone a couple times without food, and when I finally tried it, I was pleasantly surprised! My boyfriend and I loved the pretzel (him, being a pretzel expert of Houston, declared it the 'Best Pretzel of Houston') and grilled Brie sandwiches the most. But, the olives were great and the quesadilla had great flavor so you can't go wrong there either. We can't wait to go back one day to try the rest of the menu and the desserts! The place can get a little busy but the service is great and they will recommend great wines based on your mood and food.

Yelp
Another great steak a NY strip very tender nicely cooked medium rare!! Tuesday night is steak specials
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
We've been a handful of times and was pleasantly surprised how good the burger and tacos are. Wednesday pasta night (2 pastas and a bottle of wine for $25) is pretty fab, too. Really good wine selection.

Gabriella M.

Yelp
My first time and was excited but the bartender was not very friendly. I was at the bar waiting and he just wasn't feeling it. We had one drink and moved on. I hope you have a better experience.
google avatar

Norma C.

Yelp
Great place and the burgers are amazing and Chris the bartender is always very friendly and attentive.

Katya S.

Yelp
The burger was amazing!! The ambiance is very romantic, I love a lowlight little bar to hangout with my hubby :)

Richard W.

Yelp
Woke Bartenders, bad service wont refill your drinks. Take your money elsewhere. The food is decent, extremely bad personalities of the bartenders. Bartenders will lay their hands on you. Physically aggressive

Tanya S.

Yelp
Not sure where all the stellar reviews are from...While food we saw prepared from an outside building and brought inside looked very appetizing, the service and outdoor "patio" was beyond disappointing. On a slow weekday we had to make multiple requests for basic things (water) that were acknowledged and then ignored. The connection from the inside to the patio was atrocious. It was a dirty unfinished area littered with plant debris and dead insects. The "patio" led to a space with very dirty picnic tables that hadn't been wiped off in a while. After overlooking the appearance and sitting down a stray cat made its home in the middle of our table. The inside is a nicely refurbished area that would've been ok if not for the horrible service. The bartender preferred to chat over provide even remotely attentive service to those sitting at the bar and lacked a sense of urgency.
google avatar

Jazmin M.

Yelp
YOU MUST BE OK WITH CATS EATING OFF YOUR FOOD Location: N Main Staff: friendly, nice Wait time: none to put order (you order inside at bar) Then of course just the norm for your food to be cooked. Seating: indoor and outdoor Parking: enough, as well as street parking As we walked in the vibe was very chill. Based on reviews I decided to give it a try for the sprouts and steak. We made our order they have QR codes both indoor and outdoor. We opt for outdoor seating as the weather was phenomenal. As we are waiting for our order a cat decides to come by. It decided to get closer and jump on table. I don't mind animals I just don't like them where I put my food/ eat. Another guest came and took the cat (thank you to her). We received food and started enjoying, again cat comes and is under table, we try to find someone that works there to take cat away and none was outside. We continued eating in a rush to try to avoid cat jumping on table and taking food. Well it didn't worked. Cat jumped on table and started eating off the food. Definitely left after that. I really was loving this place and would of love to it a chance but definitely need someone checking on outside customers and make aware of cats in advance. ****UPDATE**** After speaking with owners, they took responsibility and initiative to make things right. Speaks highly of the service they run and the care for customers. Will definitely be returning to try their wine selection but will stick with dining indoors.

Yelp
Amazing chill vibe with great food. I got the Brie cheese bites and they were amazing
google avatar

Yelp
So my daughter is much cooler than me. I asked her for a recommendation of a fun place to go in town that's fun but not too hip or expensive or crowded that has good parking. Such a great place. Wonderful wine, great food, and service. And checked all my boxes.
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
Very rarely do I not find an issue with a venue, this is one of those rare moments. Respectable wine list, friendly barkeep (SO to David!), and a good burger. Chill environment where people from the neighborhood meet up. Really cool place. Only complaint would be the size of the burger. It was delicious, but tiny. I'm still hungry. Fries were ok: nothing to write home about. I'll come back for steak night. This is definitely a must visit and a great spot!
google avatar

Dave F.

Yelp
If I lived closer - I'd be a regular here. The food and food and drinks are awesome!! We had a rib eye, burger, chicken, Mac and cheese, and brussel sprouts. Everything was very flavorful and yummy. What sets this place aside is the ambiance. As we waited, we listed to a wide ranging playlist along with many of the guests signing aloud. There was a ton of laughing, dancing, and just cutting up. The place had a great personality! While there, the owner invited EVERYONE in the establishment to share a drink. Even though I wasn't a regular at the place - they welcomed me as if I was. This place is a gem. If you get a chance to stop in, I'm sure you'll have a blast as well!

Michael M.

Yelp
Service was terrible, inattentive bartenders. It would have been ok if the ac was working properly and they didn't over serve a customer that was being belligerent. Would not come here agin.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Nice bar and food. Beer and wine only. Tuesday is steak night offering several cuts at discounted prices. I ordered the filet it was perfectly cooked to order 5/5, added the chimichurri 5/5, and brussel sprouts 5/5. Wednesday is pasta night. Excellent wine choices, but I wish they had more draft beers. Only about 5. Lots of cans and bottles. Friendly service. Reasonably quiet with a outdoor space.

Mario B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood jaunt. Everyone was friendly, and the food was really good. Had the Cheeseburger. Will definitely go back.

Mercedes R.

Yelp
This place is so cool! Def couldn't tell from the street. Come on in! Middle of no where bar :) Darts Big bar

Yelp
Pricey but a great spot to be with friends and see something different. Many high quality food options from around the world!

Yelp
Excellent beer and wine menu. Steaks were fantastic, and the staff were very attentive. Very enjoyable and eclectic playlist.

Yelp
I didn't really know what to expect when stumbling upon this institution, it kind of resembled my cousin's house (a real homey vibe). The atmosphere was subtle, but very chill. The waiters are super nice, but the star of the show was that damn burger bro. Like OH my GOODNESS, they did their thang with that burger. Fries crispy. And the icing on the cake was this champagne cocktail the bartender made for us. Overall man, it really did feel like my cousins house: nice people with some good ass food! You won't waste a cent no a minute in this fine establishment!!! (Had this place two weeks ago, I just forgot to write the review! So that outta tell you something...that damn burger been on my mind for TWO WEEKS!!!)
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. Fun wine list: lots of comfy tasty wines and exciting new adventurous wines to become your new favorite.

Laverne T.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere and people. Every night there is a special. I would go back. We had the burger and prime rib.

Yelp
Everything perfect t and accommodating 5 would definitely come back again .... I highly recommend this place ! Good selection of drinks !

Yelp
This is just a great place to visit, but if you blink you can miss it. Located on the corner of N. Main & E. 25th St, it is a little off the beaten path, unless you know where to look. Parking can be tricky, but there is actually more parking than you would expect. You can park along the side, on the street, right in front, or even across the street. This is a great date spot, but also somewhere that you can visit with family and friends. From my experience, one of the bartenders is friendly, one not so much -- but I will let you figure out which is which... The wine selections are great, and the beer is also. If you can't find seating inside, there is additional seating in the back. Pro Tip: Hit Lei Low, across the street after. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Armando H.

Yelp
An amazing neighborhood gem. One of the best burgers you can have in town or anywhere. Kid and pet friendly, easy going atmosphere perfect for a chill night. Wine and beer selection is great and service to match
google avatar

Alberto G.

Yelp
Since this little gem opened up a few months ago my wife and I have been dropping by a few times a month. The staff is amazing, the wine selection is superb, and the delicious bites are yummy for your tummy. A variety of wines such as Sparkling, Whites, Rose, and Reds are aplenty. Majority can be by the glass or by the bottle. If you are not sure what will tickle your fancy, don't be shy and ask the happy folks behind the bar. They know their stuff and will not steer you wrong. Beer is available in its canned form. They have a good variety of local brews and even have some hard seltzer. The pasta dishes (only available on Wednesdays) are so tasty and satisfying. No regrets with the late night carb loading. It is worth a try! The Penne Diavolo, which I forgot to take a pic of, is a pasta option for those that want a good spicy kick. The addition of jalapeños may bring about a runny nose, but is equally balanced with the heirloom tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil, red wine and EVOO. The Bolonese Bucatini with sausage is really good too, so do not wear a white shirt because you will be slurping up the pasta and spreading the red sauce all over you. The other food options are tacos, a mouth watering cheeseburger, mac n'cheese and brussel sprouts. The taco fillings are chicken, pulled pork, or brisket. I have tried all 3 and none disappointed, though the pulled pork with BBQ sauce is my personal favorite. If you are feeling a little extra, get the mac n'cheese and get the pulled pork or brisket topped right on top of that bed of carb and cheesy goodness. I'm here for a good time and to feel good inside. Good comfort food does the job. As for ambiance, this spot has a cozy and warm feel inside and they have some outside patio seating available as well. They have darts available for a quick game with friends and a TV behind the bar. As for social distancing measures, all the tables inside are spaced far apart and of course masks are required when not seated. If you are near The Post Beer & Wine Garden, give them a try! You will be glad you did.

David L.

Yelp
Not inclusive.Seems like the music selection only caters to a specific crowd and no pescatarian food options.
google avatar

Bailey C.

Yelp
Nothing special from the outside. Cute on the inside. Great wine list. One of the best burgers!
google avatar

Mayra S.

Yelp
Unfortunately the hour wait for our food is not the main reason for writing this review, but rather the unfortunate experience of the poor service my partner, friends & I had to endure. If you're white no problem you will receive a carafe of cold water right away & prompt service. Us however just a group of friendly poc, not once. We had to remind the bar servers about our order who then basically blamed the kitchen for "forgetting" our order. Sadly this is isn't our first experience with this service, considering how different other demographics seem to receive. We came here w hopes that the service would of changed but the guy with the NOPE shirt is also just a nope for me :-)

Danny J.

Yelp
The burgers are pretty good here. A little smaller than expected, but overall, they were filling with the seasoned fries. The ambiance is a little darker and bar-ish inside, but overall a chill spot. You order food yourself at the bar, so not much to comment on service.
google avatar

Timothy B.

Yelp
While the house might throw you off a little make no mistake they make amazing steaks here and I will forever go back time and time again.
google avatar

Dennis M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere was great, steaks, sides and drinks were also great. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back again.
google avatar

Nasha L.

Yelp
Came here for a good friend's birthday and was super happy with our experience. The wine selection was amazing and had some pretty memorable bottles. And the burger!! Omg the burger, my husband and I still drool over it. Kind of weird to order a burger at a wine bar but I promise you won't regret it.

Yelp
Huge fan here ‍ This spot has one of THE BEST STEAK NIGHTS in Houston. Seriously, I'll take a steak from The Post over any steakhouse in Texas. The tomahawk is to-die-for, the wine is excellent, and don't even get me started on the Truffle Butter...
