The Best Food Town You’ve Never Heard Of in Alaska | Eater

"A potato-focused eatery that doubles as an unofficial community center, hosting summer concerts and events and acting as a social hub for locals and visitors; the menu centers on chef Ian Gyori’s made-to-order hand-cut curly fries (regular or rosemary‑garlic, straight up or buried inside a burrito) and playful plates like the Spudnik Supreme with eggs and jalapeños, alongside lighter items such as a miso salad with soft-boiled egg and lemon miso vinaigrette and evening specials that often feature Copper River salmon or other local seafood — all delivered despite significant freight and logistical challenges." - Jeremy Pataky

Google
We fast became fans of the menu at The Potato and made them our go to for breakfast most days we were in town. The menu was unique, the food excellent, and the service outstanding every time. They had an excellent selection of beverages as well. It is counter service with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Google
This place was the best. Fast, easy, and definitely yummy. Everything you would want. Food was tasty and I got the black bean corn wrap and it was so healthy and delicious! The staff were so accommodating and nice. Highly recommend!!!

Google
People were friendly and the lively atmosphere was enjoyable. I visited at an ideal time when live music was playing, allowing people to dance and enjoy themselves. The weather was also pleasant. Everything felt incredibly beautiful and relaxed. The po boy and cheesesteak are both delicious. If you’re craving something flavorful, I highly recommend trying the rosemary garlic fries instead of the regular ones.

Google
Ok, so know what you're in for here. A lot of potato based food, and I mean a lot. I had the Spudniks Supreme, and it was a huge portion of what I can best describe as comfort food. It has indoor and outdoor seating and a soda fountain so teh refills don't cost you anything, unusual for most of the places I've visited in Alaska so far. Also the view of the water is nice.

Google
Delicious food with massive portions. Wonderful beer selection and you cant go wrong with the outdoor setting. Watch for the huge black birds, they like the fries too!

Google
Very good food, great customer service, decent pricing for the area and definitely plan on coming back when I come back to the area. Very good portion sizes, great flavor, definitely will be back soon.

Google
Delicious garlic and rosemary potatoes! Glad i finally tried them out. Next time I'm going for a burrito that looked so good.

Google
Super tasty! and great service, my only complaint is as a lifelong vegetarian (20+ years so I do get sick) I don’t feel like this is a super safe restaurant for contamination. I could smell and taste bacon on items that should have been vegetarian. Otherwise great spot.

Yelp
Was in Valdez for the night and wanted to get a bite to eat. Fortunately we were staying at the BW Valdez and it was easy walking distance with tons of places to eat. Heard good things about The Potato so I wanted to check it out. It's located right at the corner across the dock. Plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy your food and if you're lucky enough to have good weather, the view of the harbor. I got the Bonanza burger ($12)and a side of curly rosemary garlic fries ($5). There were other delicious items like the salmon roll but I felt like a burger. Man! It was good!! The burger itself was nice and thick and tasty, not dry. Topped with cheese With lettuce, onions and 2 slices of tomato to ATTEMPT to put together on your own. Made for a towering burger that was hard to fit your mouth around. What a delicious problem! The bun was charred enough to add to the taste. Loved it! The fries were crispy with a nice sprinkling of garlic. However, I got a lot of tiny pieces underneath- :\ Had a bunch of beers and 2 on tap. Be prepared to wait for your food. It's not one of those places to eat if you're in a hurry. But it's worth the wait.

Yelp
Stopped here with the fam and my sibling ordered the salmon roll over fries since they're gluten free, my mom got the regular salmon roll with rosemary fries and I got the chowder. Food was super good and service is friendly! Unfortunately my sib's order came out with a bun and we think they just scraped it off onto the fries since they got pretty sick after the meal. Do NOT trust them if you are gluten sensitive. NO vegan options

Yelp
Pretty good place in my opinion Loved their food, especially burritos. Also the girl at the register was very nice and helpful. Sitting inside and outside which is great. My friend live their burger too

Yelp
The roads made garlic. Potatoes were amazing. The pork poor boy with the fresh law was great. The blueberry cream soda was great. A place was packed. Food came out quick. Great little place to eat. Their little outside patio and porch area and then they have a very small inside area. But the hospitality and ambiance was very nice

Yelp
Apparently owned and operated by a nice, vibrant Panamanian woman, we ended up eating here twice, not only because the dining options in Valdez are very limited, but mostly because the food is delicious. The salmon chowder is among the best I've had. The breakfast burritos, the chicken fajita pita and the salmon roll were all delicious. They have about 5-10 wine and 10 beer options. They have about 4 picnic tables with no cover, about 5 stools outdoors with cover and 4-5 tables in side. All in all, the business can seat about 20-25 people. Don't fret if the line appears long. It moves pretty quickly.

Yelp
Delicious and reasonably priced breakfast for a tourism town!! A crazy combination, I got the Sputnik's supreme, OMG curly fries covered in sausage gravy, eggs, cheese, and jalapeños?!? YES! Absolutely delicious. Definitely give yourself time because they make everything to order, so it's a good wait! But worth it. Daniel, at the front was very polite, too. Quality customer service always wins for me!

Yelp
We stopped by the potato today for a late lunch. We heard people talking about the potato in mc carthy. It is the sister restaurant We got there cheese burger and basket of fresh fries. Everything was very tasty. Highly suggest stopping by if you're in Valdez. .

Yelp
The food is good, The Roadside Potatohead deserves the rating it has right now. Like I said, the food is very well made we got the cheesesteak, curly fries, and the chicken fajita pita. The fries were a bit burned but I loved how "fresh" it tasted since they used real potatoes. The chicken fajita pita was good but the sauce wasn't that great. The cheesesteak was good overall. One thing we would change is how they should make combos, the fries were an actual meal. I feel like getting a cheesesteak and some fries along with it seems like the right thing to do. Overall great place and very recommendable!!!!

Yelp
It's located right in front of the harbor so it's a great location to watch the fishing boats coming back and prepare their fresh caught fish. It was pretty busy during lunch time, the line wasn't too long and after 5 minutes it was already our turn. They had both the breakfast and lunch menu options available. I ordered an hummus wrap, my husband a loaded burrito, and a basket of garlic fries to go. Everything was delicious and the service was pretty fast.

Yelp
Hit this place on our way out of Valdez and wish we would have found it on our way in. The food was really good. My wife and oldest got the Cheese burger, and my youngest daughter got the Cheese Steak, and I got the Spudnicks Supreme. Generous portions is an understatement. The bread is sweet and really satisfying, making everything "slap your momma" good. Loved the service, the people and the mood. We highly recommend The Potato.

Yelp
Their food is good but I'm basing this review off of my single purchase of a gold peak iced tea that they charged me $6.00 dollars for. I'm actually very embarrassed that I even bought it when I could've went to Safeway and got two for five dollars. It's a shame they got to jack up the price that badly.

Yelp
Food was amazing but service was nahhh.. they seem to be rushing everyone.. order was wrong too.. we kept trying to wave our waiter for drink refills and for our check..

Yelp
Aka "The potato". Nice little restaurant near water with both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered some sandwiches and a clam chowder - the chowder was delicious and the sandwiches were just ok. It didn't take very long to get our food and the staff was nice. There are also some other nice food trucks nearby if you want to try other cuisines!

Yelp
This place is amazing! The food, service and outside seating is perfect and they are dog friendly! Oh and they have booze! The Pulled Pork Po' Boy on fries hit the spot. We went here 4 times while in town. Totally worth the taste and view!
google avatar

Brendie W.

Yelp
This spot was a fantastic find! The views from the patio are beautiful of the harbor. The staff was super friendly, and helpful. I had the pulled pork po' boy. The bun was toasted, the meat was perfectly slow cooked, the slaw was pickled to perfection. The side of rosemary garlic fries were good crispy , "banging with flavor!" They have a great beer menu. I would definitely drive to this place again, if in Alaska!! (It was clean, just be mindful it is a food truck.)

Yelp
Tried out Roadside Potatohead for the first time this morning. I was the first person in line and the food came out in five minutes which was great because I was starving! I tried out the Potato head burrito and you know, it was good but I wasn't WOWED by it like I thought I'd be. Maybe my friends hyped it up to much? Or maybe that wasn't the best thing on the menu. Either way I'll try it out again next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Aide M.

Yelp
I think this place is overrated. Too expensive for what the food taste like. The fries were not that good. Next time we're in Valdez, we won't be coming back to this place. There were plenty of tables to eat and the service was not bad, but still I don't think the food is great.
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Fun and quirky roadside and harbor side eats. Yummy garlic rosemary curly fries. Salmon salad sandwich was delicious but too much oil made a mess. The kids favorite was the gravy and cheese fries! Definitely a fun stop in Valdez!

Yelp
I wasn't expecting many great eats in the small town of Valdez, but The Potato hit the spot. They close at 9 pm and I made it right at closing time. There is a menu with about 15 items and a beer and wine list. A lot of fries are on the menu given the name but there is a burrito option, a yogurt, a salmon roll - so menu is kind of all over the place. The salmon roll was great! It was fresh Alaskan salmon salad (like a tuna salad but with salmon) with lettuce and tomatoes on a crispy baguette. Did get a few bones but don't let that scare you away and definitely confirmed its freshness. I also had the yogurt with granola and fruit which was good. Only negative was that the only fruit were small wild blueberries. Maybe there is more variety during different times of year. They had a decent beer list with Alaskan microbreweries but only 2 on tap. I ordered the one I wanted but the tap ran out and so I had to go with something else which was a bit disappointing. Ambiance is nice. Located right across from the marina with plenty of outdoor seating and mountain views. There is some indoor seating as well. Staff were friendly and had a smile. Definitely a good option with late hours. Closed on Wednesday I believe but recommend confirming.

Yelp
Wife had the Spudnick Supreme and I had the chicken pita. Lots of chicken In the pita and it had taste which was nice. the Spudnick was freaking amazing. Wonderful blend of curly fries , gravy, with sausage topped with cheese and eggs&jalapeños . Freaking tasty and perfect for a warm up meal on a rainy August afternoon. Danger it would put you to sleepy town with a full stomach. Can't recommend this place enoug

Yelp
We ate here twice and liked all of our choices. Hubby loved the Salmon Salad Sandwich a LOT and I liked the Chicken Fajita Wrap so much that he ordered it the next night! The garlic rosemary fries were good (but a bit soggy) and we ate em all up even though it looked like way too much when we got them! The green salad with feta and almonds was soo fresh and crisp and huge...highly recommended! And the salmon chowder is great but was NOT hot...had to take it back to our hotel and warm it up to really enjoy it. Why didn't we just ask the restaurant to warm it up, you ask? Well, because the gal who runs the register and food pick up counter is a bit feisty and has no problem bossing patrons around to keep 'em in line to her way of running things and asking for something to be warmed up would NOT have fit into her agenda. Both times we came here my hubby got chided by her for not doing something just right and felt like he was back in grade school! Our impression was that she was much more gentle on regulars...but the food is great and worth the abuse! Note: if you prefer things a bit less spicy, as for the salsa to be put on the side of the wrap...I think that may fly with the gal in charge but you've been warned!

Yelp
We'll unfortunately I had a really bad experience tonight 6/18/23 (Father's Day). We show up and order a simple fries and a chowder. The couple we're with get their food and finish and I never did get served. My wife (Tami) after 45 minutes asked about our order and was told "just 5 minutes more". Well we never got the fries we have traveled 1800 miles to try. When I finally had enough after 15 minutes the girl was very unapologetic about the whole thing and gladly refunded my money. I was super embarrassed to be put in that situation. Mike

Yelp
We stopped after a kayaking experience with our cruise. Great service, was faster than expected (good food isn't always fast) and the food was delicious! Hubs had the hummus wrap with chicken. I had the chicken fajita pita. I'd definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
The salmon roll was really good! The guy taking our order was nice to notice and ask if the sandwich was going to be shared so it can be cut in half as he saw me loitering nearby. Perhaps it was obvious that we were the only two Asians there (and together) at the time. Hehe. Though the salmon roll was a tad on the pricer end for what it is ($15), it was pretty meaty. Though basic as it was (a simple salmon salad), the salmon was hearty and yummy. The buttered roll was seriously a great finishing touch. We were snacking so we opted to split only the sandwich. If you're eating it as a meal, I'd say accompany this with something else as it won't fill you up. There's plenty of seating choices inside and outside so it's great for large groups.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
By far the best prices for food on Valdez. Outdoor seating and indoor seating. I had the chicken fajita pita - the chicken was delicious! One person had the salmon sandwich and was super happy with it. Super friendly service. Really delicious food! Recommend if in Valdez and looking for something to eat!
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
$15 for a salmon roll This is the best salmon roll I've ever had. Then again, this is the only time I've ever had a salmon roll and I'm not talking about the sushi variety. I've had plenty of crab and shrimp rolls. I like how the salmon roll was not covered in sauce and filler. It reminds me of a tuna sandwich. I get that salmon is cheaper than crab and shrimp but most of those other seafood rolls I've had are big on bread and less on seafood. Would I come here again? Yes if I was in the area. This and that taco place are probably the best places to eat near the pier.

Yelp
Awesome vibe, amazing fries, incredible service. My kid loved playing with the Mr potato head set. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
This place has it all, incredible food, including hand cut fries; rotating beer list, full of Alaskan brews; and beautiful setting. A must-visit in Valdez!

Lauren W.

Yelp
Best food in of our trip to valdez!!! The salmon roll was stuffed, the salmon chowder was amazing and the breakfast sandwich hit. The ambiance was great and selection of canned bevies was inspiring. The fry basket is sizable! Good prices here too especially compared to other places in town
google avatar

Yelp
This is an amazing restaurant with even more amazing owners. On our trip to Valdez we hit a flat tire, and Christine and Glen both took time out of their working days to help us out. Christine, one of the co-owners, treated us to a drink and told us about the history of Valdez. Even on Christine's day off, she offered to plug our flat tire while we went on our kayaking trip. As for the food, I definitely recommend the salmon roll and the potatohead burrito. We took four salmon rolls for lunch on our kayaking trip and their deliciousness fueled us through the day. The potatohead burrito is a really hearty and filling breakfast that my brother and I both loved. For anyone visiting Valdez, this is a must stop location. Get a drink, order a burrito, and say hi to Christine and Glen for us.

Ellie S.

Yelp
food is amazing. staff is so cool. love this place so much. i'm a potatohead burrito add gravy and bacon girl through and through.

Yelp
Super nice spot after our road trip. I ordered the salmon roll and rosemary garlic fries and they are absolutely fresh and delicious. My friend's pulled pork on fries was nice, too. The bartender was very friendly. We had a nice experience.

Yelp
How long does it take to make a basket of fries and an order of chili!!!!! Well here - way to f- in long We left ! If you need the money keep it. Nothing quick about this place Don't recommend or will we go back! Sad cause it's like 1 of 3 options
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
The food is great. The beer is great. The service is quick and friendly. It's a funky little summer food shack. Give it a try, you won't be sorry. Enough said.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Literally the best part of my day. Sunny, roadside restaurant overlooking the Valdez harbor. Motown tunes. Best effing breakfast burrito I've had in ages. Friendly server. Nothing not to like. Make sure you add this place to your to do list when visiting Valdez.

Linda P.

Yelp
Friendly service and great fries! We asked for them extra crispy and they were perfect! Had breakfast burritos the next day which were also very good - I just wished I had asked for the fries to be extra crispy for the burritos - would have been even better!
google avatar

Sean G.

Yelp
This place was great. Lots of fun and local stuff here. The beer selection was great knowing how far most of it had to travel. Food was great they had run out of the Biscuit and gravy but that was honestly the only sad part. It removed a star because all my lady wanted was that, and after waiting in the long line dreaming about it she didn't want anything else. The food I got was great! So excited to try the new location in Anchorage La Potato!

John B.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful staff limited menu but what the have is delicious. I had the chicken fajitas and my wife had the French fries with gravy both very good
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
We have been here once before and the pop up one in anchorage. They have quite the selection of beers I got the peach party sour it's good! We also got spudkins which are the signature fries with gravy and shredded cheese. The gravy had chunks of sausage and more of a grey color than a dark brown gravy. Haven't ever seen this place not busy so get there early because we got the last dpudkins for the day at 4pm. Check them out if you love potatos!
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
Excellent house made fries, an unexpectedly nice beer selection too. Yum! Great spot in Valdez.
google avatar

Caleb A.

Yelp
Let's start by saying these guys know how to do fries. They were hot, fresh, crispy, and perfectly cooked. The rosemary garlic is pretty strong, but if you're like us and love garlic, it's an absolute must. I ordered the black bean and corn salad burrito and my wife got the special of the day, beef stew with onions and shallots over fries. Both were delicious, and we felt like the special should be a permenant menu item. They offer a good selection of beers and had outside seating. As far as good restaurants go in Valdez, it's pretty slim pickings. Roadside Potatohead is definitely one of the best options and a must when visiting.
google avatar

Bobby S.

Yelp
Super friendly service and a great harbor view. We ordered the salmon roll and the fries ( poutine). Both were excellent and very filling. They have a decent selection of beer as well. Prices are very reasonable, especially for Alaska. We would go back.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Great location on the harbor.. I ordered the cheese steak and rosemary fries. Fries were definitely on point.. the cheese steak seemed to lack flavor. But for the most part, good. Friendly staff.

Angelo T.

Yelp
Great food, and amazing Service! The environmental is nice with the mountains and docks.
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
Delicious fries. I got the ones with the garlic and rosemary. I will definitely go back there again.

Jane Z.

Yelp
Great breakfast burrito, especially if you like spicy. We added chorizo and avocado to ours.
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Loaded fries were so good. Like so good. Beer cheap and views great. Don't miss the harbor experience watching people bring fish in!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Great location. Great setting. Cute, fun place. Beautiful day. Outdoors with the dog. Friendly, quick service. Ordered the supreme with jalapeños, easy over eggs and added bacon. From the first bite it was everything I hoped for and imagined. Not sure the bacon was needed, good chunks of sausage in the gravy. Nice runny egg. Delicious.
google avatar

Tammy B.

Yelp
Went here twice, once for dinner and once for breakfast. Hamburgers, home cut fries and breakfast burritos were fabulous. The only disappointment was that they were closed Tuesday for some unkown reason and we really wanted a breakfast burrito to take out fishing!
