Proprietors features a lovely, homey (though extremely warm) interior making for an intimate dining experience. Small plates style, the menu is a tad confusing, as each dish is a different portion size and it was difficult to tell what and how many to order. Thankfully, our waitress was very helpful and explained each dish and its size to us with accuracy. Without her, we would have been lost.
Every savory dish was excellent and unique. The highlight was perhaps the mushrooms, surprisingly, which had a strong yet pleasant vinegar flavor. The pork neck sauce and dressings were delicious, though it wasn't our favorite cut of meat. They were all good, albeit pricey--like everything else on Nantucket.
Really, the only less than good dish was the dessert. All three options sounded delicious, and we watched with jealousy as the chocolate pot de creme and banana bread sundae went to other tables, but I am huge sticky toffee pudding fan, so we had to go with that. The cream cheese ice cream it was served with was AMAZING. Like, to-die-for, wish I could buy it in a pint back home, good. However, the actual sticky toffee pudding was dry and room temperature. We even asked the waitress whether it was invertedly not heated, but she said that was the way it was supposed to be served. Never before had I had a sticky toffee pudding not served warm. She said then the ice cream would melt, but, yes, that's kind of the point? So the dessert, despite the delicious ice cream, was a total miss.
I will say, I had read other reviews before coming and was nervous by consistent complaints of poor service and pacing. And I'm not sure if we got lucky or the restaurant took to heart those criticisms and made changes, but our waitress was amazing and attentive and the food came out over a reasonable length of time. So, I don't share those same views.
