24-Hour Guide to Dining in Monterey and Carmel With Kids | Eater SF

"An 850-acre lodge nestled in the hills of Carmel Valley, the property offers low-key family fun—kids can sail remote-controlled sailboats on Mallard Lake while parents sip wine from Covey Deck—and outdoor lawn games like cornhole or casual golf. Dining at Covey Grill features chef Goran Basarov's dishes, including shishito peppers with a pumpkin seed furikake and beef and courgette skewers with an onion soubise and mustard relish. The property also hosts events such as the Motorsports Gathering car show in August." - Marisa Churchill

My family had the privilege of staying at the Quail Lodge this summer. The grounds are beautiful, the staff are all welcoming and professional and the rooms are comfortable. We were fortunate to stay in the villa suite which consisted of two bedrooms, two full baths, one half bath, a separate living area and private patios. It was hands down the best suite we have stayed in when in Carmel. It was spacious, the beds were comfortable and the partial kitchen was a nice touch. Having access to a microwave, refrigerator and ice machine in our living area was quite nice. My boys enjoyed the nightly s'mores and the putting course. The bikes and pickleball courts are activities we hope to take advantage of during future visits. The dining options (Covey Grill, Edgar's Grill and room service) were all delcious which was an added bonus. We look forward to making the Quail lodge our home away from home when in Carmel.

My recent 3 night stay at The Quail was enhanced by a lovely weather window (mid 70s) the week before Christmas. The zen-like architecture of this property and the mature, tidy landscaping provided a wonderful backdrop to an enjoyable respite. I had a junior suite overlooking the mini putting course. The accommodation was generous with a wonderful sitting area and fireplace in addition to a double size outdoor deck. Water pressure in the shower was strong which is always appreciated. I enjoyed this room immensely.||The only downside of The Quail is on the food & beverage side. Based on 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 2 dinners, I would have to say that the fare was just not up to the luxury level of the rest of the property. I felt the kitchens at both The Covey and Edgars were going through the motions, churning out, I dare say, "country club quality" food. There is really no excuse for this, as Carmel is at the epicenter of the richest bounty of produce, fish and meat in the country. Even the wine list was "ho hum" considering the proximity to amazing wineries.||While I highly recommend the accommodations at this property, I suggest driving the few miles into the village to enjoy far better cuisine options.

My wife and I started lodging here about 3-4 years ago and fell in love with the location. We've received exemplary service at every level and truly enjoy the amenities available to the guests. We now feel like family and planned our stays for 2026 for celebration and relaxation. It's no surprise that The Quail Lodge has been voted Number-1 in the industry. I want to especially recognize Melissa, and the other young ladies that manage the front desk. I applaud all the hard working staff that take care of the property, restaurant, housekeeping, and overall maintenance. We live in Penryn,CA and this has become our (in state) getaway location. Truly pleased customer/family Rev. Louis C. Starr III

We had a wonderful experience at The Quail! This is a large property with a golf course, spa, restaurants, and beautiful grounds. The pool is lovely and there's a good gym and steam rooms. It is about 3 miles inland from Carmel-by-the-sea and about 12 miles from the village of Carmel Valley.|The staff, especially Hannah and Lexi, were very accommodating. We were upgraded to a bungalow which was absolutely wonderful! I look forward to staying again.

I live in San Francisco and have been staying regularly at The Quail for the past few years. I visit alone, or with my husband, and come to volunteer at the Center for Photographic Art.||Without exception, my rooms have been extremely comfortable: they are very large, with equally large bathrooms.|Many rooms have a beautiful view of the golf course, a fireplace and a lovely, private outdoor seating area, The grounds are beautiful and it’s quiet and serene. If it rains, the main lodge has bright, quiet rooms where one can read, relax, and enjoy the views. ||What’s most impressive about The Quail is the consistent level of outstanding service, the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Also, the Covey restaurant is excellent! The food and service are wonderful. ||There are great amenities: a golf course, gym, and heated swimming pool ! ||Downtown Carmel is less than 15 minutes away. If you need anything, there is a large, upscale shopping center less than 10 minutes away. ||Allyson Ely

My husband and I just celebrated our honeymoon at Quail and had the most amazing time! The staff, food and rooms were amazing and the views are unbelievable. Favorite part was definitely the breakfast every morning and the gorgeous trees / plants on the grounds. Hopefully will come back in the future with friends!

I think the Quail is a hidden gem, for the same price the Quail is much better quality than other hotels in Carmel town. It's a Perfect place to unwind and relax. Rooms are spacious and well appointed. The breakfast next to the pond and water fountain is very relaxing, The grounds are super nice to walk around. Will go back

Yelp
I was here only for one night. Parking is free! The lobby does not have coffee, only in the early morning like 5 AM. They have hot water and tea though. The receptionist was nice during check in. They give free s'mores kits. There are campfires around the property. I had a relaxing night! Room: I had a room with two queens. It was very spacious! There was a separate shower and bathtub in the bathroom. There were black out curtains on the windows. I didn't realize there was a window on the ceiling until the sun shown down in the morning. Then I also noticed there were blinds to block out the sun on that too! The bed was so comfy. The blanket was so warm and seemed like down feather. They gave us two complimentary glass bottles of Martinelli's apple cider. Amenities: -Fitness center. I was here at night, so it was very dark. I only saw one small room with cardio equipment. No weights. -Spa. There was no water dispenser and no hair dryer. In the women's locker room, there were lockers, one shower, new bathrobes, one pair of slippers (that we saw), and fresh towels. The steam room was small but could fit at 4-5 people. -Pool. The pool is heated. I wish they had a jacuzzi! -Golf. I think they had a 9-hole course on the property, but I did not partake in this. -Golf shop/Golf club. This is a 10 minute walk from the lodge. You can rent and purchase equipment here. -Tennis/pickleball. Equipment is free to borrow. No shade for the pickleball court. One tennis court is covered in shade by itself. Not sure about lighting. No wind guards. -Restaurants. See website for hours. When I checked out around 11-12PM, the restaurant was closed.

Yelp
This is a fantastic course! Manicured extremely well! Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are excellent. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Driving range is all grass, unlimited balls, and long enough to hit all your clubs. The course has a really fun layout but it is very short so big hitters should play from the tips. Greens are fast. This is the most underrated golf course in the Carmel/Monterey area. It can be very pricey but you can also find extremely reasonable deals which can make this course the best bang for your buck in the area. If you have not played the course I highly recommend giving it a try. Food at their restaurant, Edgar's, is very solid golf course food. The pace of play is really good even on the weekends.

Yelp
Beautiful place.. not sure if the golf course is exclusive to members only but we inquired about the driving range and was told it's open to the public. They charge $25 per person, unlimited balls. A little pricey compared to the other driving ranges around but worth the try since we were in the area. There's a limit to how far you can hit your ball (180 yards) because it's not a big enough space and there are houses nearby. The pro shop looked well stocked with golf clothes, footwear, accessories. I'm sure there were golf clubs (I didn't really look, but I'm pretty sure I saw some bags). Lastly, they have strict dress code- both at the course and at the range- no denim, no t-shirt's, no sweats. Didn't know this prior to coming here.

Yelp
Thank you everyone at Quail Lodge for the most amazing sister vacation . We had never been to Carmel and had called several hotels before settling on Quail Lodge because of Karlton's hands on customer service ! Check in to check out did not disappoint - loved the room , loved the grounds , loved the attention to detail - highly recommend this resort and can't wait to return with my husband for some golf. Everyone was soooooo kind !

Yelp
Always an awesome time at Quail . From the golf to the Restaurants . About the hours for food and beverage are hard to figure out. From the Lodge restaurant to the Edgars at the golf course. But overall great place. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
I love golf, and because of that, I am willing to play just about anywhere. Dirt patches with splotches of grass are getting more and more common with the California drought, so it was time for something a little nicer. That's when Quail Lodge came into play. Situated in the valleys of Carmel, Quail Lodge is a beautiful area for visitors of multiple activities--such as renting Range Rovers, which conveniently and hilariously is an option at the Quail Lodge parking lot. The clubhouse is quite nice, and the downstairs area is somewhat entrancing in its narrow, maze-like design with multiple members-only rooms. With the tee time came free balls at the grass range; there were multiple targets to fire at, but I was too distracted freezing my fingers off. The putting green was also quite nice and featured flat areas as well as some quick hills. There also was a chipping and pitching area complete with a bunker. I appreciated the free water, plastic ball markers, and tees--nice touch. The course itself is quite gorgeous. Very lush fairways, rough that doesn't pose as US Open-thick rough, mountains surrounding. When it comes to golf, the course is quite fair. None of the holes are absurdly long, the fairways are pretty wide, and the very soft greens aren't postage stamps. That said, the bunker placement is very strategic and right where most golfers where land, the greens are extremely quick and tough to read, and the par 3's are pretty long. I really enjoyed the design of the course, which emphasized hitting golf shots without punishing you for them if they're just a fraction off. I'm just not a fan of the courses that insert ravines and forced carries just for the heck of it, and thankfully, Quail Lodge doesn't fall victim to that. What you do have is a litany of dog-leg lefts and rights, a few uphill holes, and even a couple that are straightforward with those accursed bunkers right where you'll hit your tee shot and shots to the green. As I said before, those greens are true but very tough; I had a few misreads, and I realized I needed to pace all around the big greens to get a true feel for what was going on. I loved how my shots were sticking into the green and stopping or rolling back; all too often at other courses, they bounce off often because the green really has no water at all (which is fine, but takes a different style of golf). Also, my twosome played in just over three hours! That's amazing!!! A few non-major things that can be improved: one hole didn't have a ball washer for some reason, the construction/maintenance on the course (heavy machinery digging holes, lawnmowers) kind of got in the way (I almost hit some poor guys...haha), one hole had a lake that was almost dried up and I was dumb enough to go in after a ball and sunk to my ankles because the mud was so soft...Yeaaaah that was my bad, but a warning would have been nice too. This place is definitely up there in terms of California golf courses. Strongly recommend it if you ever get the chance!

Yelp
It was our mission to make it back to Quail Lodge and I'm glad we didn't wait too long to make our return. It's been nearly a year since we were in the area. We were familiarized with the checking in part since we've been there before. I really regret not writing down the name of the starter. He was a cheery dude who gave us plenty of tips before we teed off. Again, exceptionally warm and friendly staff. Can't ask for more. I found myself playing shorter but strategically placing shots for the follow-up shots. Numerous times, the big stick never came out the bag but rather the 3 wood was good enough. We teed off the blues (second longest). There are a total of 6 different tee boxes you can choose from. . We verified distances with our range finders and the yardage were almost aligned. The course this time felt a little more picturesque. Lovely landscapes and postcard worthy back drops. The greens were running smooth and the overall golf course was in pristine condition. What I like about Quail Lodge Course is that even though they run on the same property, they play and feel quite different from one another. I would highly recommend playing and experiencing both if can!

Yelp
This review is for the golf club. For the cost of this course - def better options somewhere else. Pretty stuffy for no good reason. It is one of those clubs where there are members but you can also get a public tee time. Booked it and was supposed to be paired with a group but they said they didn't want to play with us and then the people behind got mad because we had to start after them. Lots of attitude that seemed unnecessary. So many other better places around here. Go to CVR instead.

Yelp
Reviewing the golf course not the lodge. One of the golf courses in the best shape(lush green fairways) for June in the Carmel valley area and putting was fast and true..Very nice clean sand bunkers with sand not dirt. A fun challenging track, best deals as a club Corp guest...Friendly staff, dog friendly, easy parking, nice practice facility, etc...

Paul C.

Yelp
Golf Course was in amazing shape and the greens were better than Pebble Beach and Spyglass and the fairways are plush, this is a must play course!! The staff was friendly and very accommodating, will be back in August!!!!!

Derrick W.

Yelp
Course is nice and fun to play. Excellent practice facility. A little over priced. Worst course Marshalls anywhere. Rude when there is no reason to be.

Leslie F.

Yelp
Beautiful, immaculate, lavender and rosemary lined walkways, delicious continental breakfast. ....very attentive staff. The golf course is beautiful, a great challenge and perfectly maintained We are enjoying our visit!

Yelp
This is a beautiful old school golf course. Back in the Carmel Valley, this course is always in great shape, nice practice facility. The staff is always friendly and professional. The food in the restaurant is fabulous.

Yelp
This is a review of the golf course and their staff. The practice facility offers a limited distance grass driving range, pitching area and nicely maintained greens. The staff are wonderful. My son received a lesson from Drew. My wife and I took a semi private lesson with their award winning, Director of Instruction, Katherine Marren. They were both exceptional instructors. The golf course is gorgeous. Although, we have yet to experience a round of golf on this semi private course. We will post more after our next trip.

Yelp
GOLF: The Good: Overall a fair and fun course in fantastic condition. We played Pasatiempo recently and that was awesome, but actually enjoyed Quail more in terms of playability. Great staff - friendly & gracious. Parking and the Range are both strategically located, no walking for a mile to get to the ProShop, range, carts etc. Oh, Except the bathrooms, it's a labyrinth. They joke about that as we did too. The Course: Busy on a Friday (as usual we're told) but moved along with minimal wait times. Condition was A+. PGA tour bunkers and greens. I checked this course off as #96th I've played and the greens and bunkers were in the top 3 I've seen. Unfortunately I never got the speed down but they rolled completely smooth and true. Only negative was some overwatering around the greens with the turf sliding around (muddy underneath). The (not sooo bad): Food & Beverage: Needs attention. For this caliber of operation, below par. More like your semi-disorganized Muni that is doing the bare minimum. The snack bar had some decent choices but the staff was SLOW and it seemed overwhelmed with only 2 people in front of us. They were nice but It took 2-3 minutes just to navigate the computerized cash register to just pay for a hot dog (seriously). Got a Bloody Mary from the beverage cart that was, well, barely serviceable (BYOB:). Not ready for prime time for sure. I'd give it 41/2 stars, 5 when they upgrade the F&B.

Yelp
I absolutely loved staying at Quail Lodge. It's very clean, great service, great continental breakfast and golf course. It's been updated with new TVs and has very comfy beds and seating. They are dog friendly and have a huge dog park on the property. The only thing I think they should address is how thin the walls are as you can hear your neighbors talk as well as the slow wifi.

Yelp
Never played golf here but helped out at a fundraiser here several years back. Old school charm nestled between luxe houses.

Yelp
THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE GOLF COURSE AND NOTHING ELSE This is one of the nicest courses I have ever had the honor of playing. I wish I could afford a membership here but...... Anyhow, I was invited to play here several times with a friend who has some sort of connection with the place, so each time I go to Cali, I get to play here for FREE (yeeee-haw!). The fairways are just like carpet; the greens you could nap on, and the rough is-- rough! Quail is not an easy course at all. Expect to have your skills put to the test here. It may look like you could coast on through, but if you are like me, and don't hit the fairways often, you are not going to like your score. If you are playing here, don't arrive like you are going to be playing Salinas Fairways, because this ain't the same place! There is a dress code here, strictly enforced. Leave the torn blue-jeans and wife-beater at home. Be prepared to be wearing slacks (or slack-shorts) and a collard shirt (easy enough). The first time I played here, I was wearing denim shorts and they wouldn't allow me to play, I had to shell out nearly $40 to get some nice shorts; though they were marked at $100, my buddy gets a FAT discount in the pro-shop (thank god). So I was still able to play. If you have an opportunity to play here DO NOT TURN IT DOWN.

Yelp
This accommodation met or exceeded all expectations . Away from the bustle of Carmel the ambience was relaxing and tranquil . Golf and land rover experience on the door step. Organic continental breakfast was different but worked. Heated pool and gym more than adequate . I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Course remodel is fantastic. This is without a doubt, the best conditioned track on the Pennisula. I understand that rates and membership prices will be going up so join or play soon. Not super long, but bunkers and greens make it a solid and fun course to play.
