The 18 Best Cambridge Restaurants | Eater London

"Normally, when a restaurant is famous for what a menu looks like, rather than what’s on it, it’s at best a cheap gimmick and at worst something that turns from funny to kind of icky upon reflection. Not so at this brilliant village pub south of the city, very much worth a drive. The menu in question is the soup of the day, which is listed not by flavour or by ingredient but simply by colour, on a scale that goes from green to brown and is mostly, honestly, shades of brown (the restaurant’s Twitter handle is @brownsouppub). There’s a board of pies come evening, and a rotating food van on Wednesday nights, which might include local burger legend Steak and Honour (there is a restaurant location, but the real experience is from the van). But really this is a place for cask ale, toast, and whatever colour of soup is on that day. Don’t sleep on the “round of sandwiches,” either, which offers absolutely absurd value for the quality; you’ll find shades of pink, not brown, on the rosy roast beef and smoky, salty ham." - James Hansen

I first discovered the Queen’s Head in Newton about 15 years ago while picking up visitors from Stansted, and it’s been one of my favourite pubs ever since. The place has a real charm, full of quirky humour and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. On one visit, I enjoyed their famous brown soup of the day - somewhere between medium and light brown - paired with a warm sausage roll that was easily one of the best I’ve tasted. Most recently, I happened to visit on a Thursday, which is pie night. I went for the classic steak and ale pie, packed with flavour and made from local produce. It was absolutely delicious and a perfect way to end the day. Whether for food, atmosphere, or friendly company, the Queen’s Head always delivers.

Small traditional style pub with a good selection of beers and alcohol. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food menu is a little strange looking but what we had was very tasty and reasonably priced for the area.

for 37 years I have used this pub but yesterday was the deal breaker, having just paid off a tab for beer left from a few nights ago, when getting a round in for my friends and explained to the landlord Mr, Robert Short I no longer had enough money to pay for the full round I was told by the landlord you are taking the piss !!! you can't go into a shop and take things if you don't have the money to pay for them, very nice comment I thought thinking back to when we had the local shop and he would come in and take high value goods like a loaf of bread and we would wait until the end of the month to be paid for said food , what an A.O. I will not be buying any more beer from that place because of his arrogant attitude , can't get my head around how he can think the way he does, but that's it I will not be buying any more beer from there, Eddie Gray

What a lovely little village pub. Very welcoming and has seating outside with a shelter and heat lamps, there is also a garden at the back too. The beer is very good and several choices including some in the barrel. There is a different food can on a Wednesday and Sunday.

There's a whole new pub culture nowadays, and The Queen's Head, the most traditional pub you could possibly imagine, has embraced the new rigours required without diluting any of its charm. You should go, and support the place, you won't be disappointed.

My favourite pub in the UK! The best ale you’ll find outside a brewery and incredible soup and sandwiches to boot. A traditional pub, with rich character and friendly staff
