"Established in 1942 (or as we like to think of it, five years before the Lakers were founded), Redwood Bar & Grill is certified Los Angeles landmark. Decorated like a pirate ship, drowning your sorrows after a particularly bad loss has never been more fun." - kat hong, james montgomery

The Redwood was amazing! It was an amazingly intimate venue to see live music and they serve possibly the best nachos ever! And, the nautical theme was super cool. Add that Sara (please excuse if spelled wrong) and the rest of the staff were super friendly and accommodating, I'd highly recommend a visit if you're a rocker in need!

Google
Love this authentic dive bar (and I mean dive bar in the best way) - very cool vibes, great service and drinks. I asked the bar tender how his cocktail game was and he just said ok but he was humble!! It was great!

Jessica Tarin

Google
Shout out to the cook Franky amazing food and the host Dani thank you. You guys are amazing on service and food is tasty. The vibe is great!

Barbara Nicholson

Google
The best chicken pesto sandwich I’ve ever had…delicious!! Service from Dani at the bar was most welcoming and made me feel comfortable being a woman traveling alone for federal jury service. Would go there again if ever back in DT LA. The atmosphere reminded me of some of the fun bars my friends and I frequented in our hey day.

Google
The atmosphere here is excellent. Smaller, pirate themed speakeasy-style bar. Feb 2025, most cocktails are $17 outside happy hour. There was also a $10 entry fee for 2 people. Staff members were quick and helpful, and live music was great! We did not order food. Would go here again.

Google
Staff was very nice. Bar Tender was not the best at socializing but the food runner did a great job by remaking the salad for us. He was extremely nice. Drinks were a bit expensive and the tequila options were not the best. The Food was very delicious! The lady enjoyed the pasta and I enjoyed the blacked chicken salad. I suggest a happy hour so more people can come and get drunk and buy food.

Google
If you are looking for a basement of the pirate ship hang out in downtown LA this is the spot. Cool atmosphere and dark basement with skulls and red lights. Food is OK and service is fine. It's pirate ship what do you expect? 😆 Dannie is a cool bartender I enjoyed sitting here.

Google
I visited this place while visiting town. Awesome bar with live music. I really like the theme and how dark it is. Nice place to have a few beers with music in the background. Food is okay I guess. My burger was good and fresh and the fried calamari not so much, it didn’t have a flavor and the sauce that came with it wasn’t very tasty. I have to say the bartender was super nice. Check out her crystal business. I got two of her beautiful crystal skulls.

Yelp
I love coming here on my lunch break. Yesterday I decided to get a chicken Cesar salad, everything on the menu is fire- Especially since it's a bar, ya know? The costumed service is good as well. It's also self seating. Parking can be challenging, but I walk to it from my job
google avatar

Yelp
I had been to this place a few times years ago and loved it back then! So I was happy to recall that while serving jury duty this past week nearby and I decided to have lunch here one day. Unfortunately, although the bar's ambiance and service is still pretty good, the food was severely lacking in flavor even for one of their most popular dishes. The prices are also up significantly(although that's common nowadays), but it's sad the food quality has gone the other direction. It might be better off as just a bar spot though, I didn't have drinks this time so I can't comment on that too much. Food: 2/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 Value: 2.5/5 Overall: 3/5

Yelp
Ahoy, mates! Redwood in downtown LA / Little Tokyo gives off strong sea vibes the minute you step down those stairs into the depths of its nautical wonderland. Think barrels for drink holders, low lighting that feels like you're sinking into a hazy shipwreck, and hearty laughter echoing like a crew of sailors on the sea. I dropped by on a Wednesday night around 9:30pm for a quick drink and dinner to go. I went with a Redwood IPA, partly because I've never had it, partly because its the bar's name. I'll never like IPAs but this one didn't suck completely. Most of the drafts were IPAs or pale ales, and the choices were bigger name brands aka no local companies. The drink selection is solid. If you're a whiskey or bottle beer fan, you're set. Now, for the real surprise...the food. I ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich and spicy fries. The fries? Not spicy, but seasoned really well. The chicken was juicy and cooked to perfection! I didn't expect to love it as much as I did, but here we are. The food alone deserves four stars itself. Overall, it's a fun place for a casual night out, but the noise level made it tough to hear at times. There was maybe around 15 people? But between the music and chatter, you're probably gonna end up shouting to one another.

Yelp
Nice little bar In downtown Los Angeles! Food was great and our bartender Dani was so kind and attentive. Came here for a friends birthday and burlesque show! Had a really fun time!! Drinks are inexpensive too.

Karen M.

Yelp
I love the Redwood Bar & Grill. I've been a customer and a promotor of shows for a good 25 plus years.. It's like a very cool 1920s pirate ship. The staff is amazing! They are the most friendly, congenial, hospitable, adorable staff and mixologist of any place in California! The atmosphere , staff, entertainment and food so cool. The bands are so great depending on the promoter that night. The PA system is perfect and the sound engineers are better than any place else I can think of in this type of venue!!! For a while I didn't know they had the most marvelous food. You would never know they have a full kitchen and put out the menu that they do which is beyond delicious!! . Love the Reverend Martini shows.. ha ha but the guests attracted by the entertainment and the regulars make a fun and extra friendly happy evening! Reword Bar & Grill is a FAVORITE piece of history & proud LA landmark!!!!

Yelp
Love this place super cool bar the locals are cool and there mix drinks are on point.

Yelp
If you're on Yelp you're probably looking for a place to eat. This ain't the place. It took them an hour to get our food out, and when I asked them if they'd consider comping us the 2 draft beers we had while we waited, the owner proudly told us to fuck off. It's a "pirate theme punk rock bar" so that is the level of service and attitude from the management you should come to expect.
google avatar

Yelp
Order the Nachos with Steak and they were out of this world! Enjoyed every bite. Great service by our bartender Kyle who was puring us some good drinks. The nautical ocean theme of the place was cool and the vibes were fun!

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Fun pirate-themed dive bar with good food in the heart of DTLA. I've been here several times now and have always had a good time. Their kitschy pirate/nautical theme is fun, their prices reasonable, food portions large, and the service always friendly (you order everything at the bar). The crowd has always been chill and it's a nice comfortable atmosphere. Everything's well-worn and nothing's fancy, but that's why I like it. I always like to stop on when I'm the area.
google avatar

Andre B.

Yelp
I was at this bar with my friend and his band. Kyle prepared an amazing Mojito giving amazing service and the food looked appetizing. They have a $20 minimum for card transactions do definetly use cash or be prepared to open a tab.

Lee W.

Yelp
Fun place great atmosphere food was fantastic. Best fish taco I've had this side of the border. Make sure you check out their specials
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Cool joint whose decor is Irish pub meets pirates. Attentive and helpful bartender. We were lucky to come on a night when they had live music acts playing (only $5 cover to see some cool talent).

Yelp
We love the Redwood Bar & Grill - especially the wings! Last place in LA of its kind!

Yelp
After grabbing an early afternoon drink at Redbird this past weekend, we ended up at Redwood. These two places are about 2-3 blocks away on the same street, and while I had been to Redbird a handful of times before, this was my first time ever hearing about Redwood. Based on reviews, it would appear as though this fun "pirate ship-themed bar" has been around for a long time. I'm not sure how I had never heard of it before, but I'm happy we discovered it. While our stay here was short, it was memorable. Live music on an early Saturday afternoon, fun decor, and great atmosphere. If you're in the area, I'd recommend stopping in for a drink.

Yelp
Awesome nautical themed bar. Loved the fish and chips. Good live music scene featuring vintage punk rock by the Tigerellas.
google avatar

Kevin V.

Yelp
Great beer. Classic rock. Great people..... what can I say the whiskey is spectacular !!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Fun nautical themed dive bar that's larger than it looks from the outside. I came during happy hour, which I believe is from 4pm-7pm M-F. The cocktails aren't usually on happy hour, but the draft beers and well drinks are. The staff here are very friendly and wonderful. There is meter parking and a big parking structure about a 4 minute walk away. Food is messy. I had the fully loaded nachos and fish tacos. They weren't that amazing, but they were priced accordingly and there was a naked mermaid painting by my seat, so it was all good.
google avatar

Timothy D.

Yelp
Wife and I went tonight as part of a group of 10 or so people celebrating a wedding. Waited an HOUR for fish and chips. Umm ... no. The waitress said there was only one guy in the kitchen. Ummm ... 30 minutes is already pushing it. 45 would be free meal territory. AN HOUR? Nope. A free meal was not offered. We threw down a couple of twenties, informed the waitress, and left. We spoke politely to the doorman on our way out. He was sympathetic. Owner: GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER PLEASE.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
Caught a friend's band playing at this venue. We enjoyed our time. It's a little bar in the middle of downtown. There's nothing really special about it other than its pirate theme. Great place to hear live music. We got some bar snacks while we were there. The people who worked here were nice. Food was decent. We had the calamari and fries. Large portions. We found a free 2-hour parking spot in front of the metro. We were lucky bc otherwise free parking would've been a challenge. The whole group had fun. Can't complain. Yelp check-in gets you 10% off food.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Great bar with live music almost every night. You can view what shows are happening by using the website. The food is very good and large portions. This a great spot to eat during the day if you have jury duty because it is only a short walk from many courthouses. The service is great and the bartenders are knowledgeable about making delicious cocktails. There is a couple street parking spots outside the bar and there are parking lots within a short walking distance. You can take the subway to get here get off at the Civic Center stop or the Historic Broadway stop.
google avatar

Pamela W.

Yelp
I love this place. Good food, nice people and great music almost every night. Oh yeah, and kick ass karaoke on Mondays (usually)!

Chillindrina F.

Yelp
I was heading towards the Little Tokyo area and their outdoor seating caught my eye. I walked in, sat at the bar, and after waiting a while for the bartender, I ordered a cocktail. The cocktail was awful! And their service was nothing to write home about either. The only good thing is they had live music and a patron told me that is the case most of the nights.
google avatar

Jackie E.

Yelp
Food was absolutely fabulous . Fish n chips to the cheese sticks. The portions are large and filling also. Friendly staff and great service. Fast and efficient. This is also a bar but the atmosphere and ambiance was great for dinner and live band music.

Austin G.

Yelp
Came in tonight and had a blast, live music and then DJ played. everyone was dancing and having a good time. The bar tender was nice enough to make us appetizers late night and went above and beyond for us. The mozzarella sticks were very good ! This place rocks
google avatar

Daisy Q.

Yelp
First time at the bar for my birthday and it was really freaking good. The guy who brought us our food was friendly and quick . Definitely above all the aesthetic was amazing. The lighting and decor was very nice. The live band was really good too. Definitely recommend
google avatar

Innas I.

Yelp
The inside of the restaurant reminds me of pirates of the Caribbean. The food is pretty good for a Bar. The only con is parking. There's a couple of structures near by, but honestly, if you're coming to a bar, you should take an Uber.
google avatar

Claudia G.

Yelp
It's a cute Pirate themed bar. Its a great place to grab happy hour drinks and food. They have booths perfect for a group to sit and eat. The lighting is low and creates a fun feeling of being in a ships cabin. The specialty drinks are fun and taste great. For the food, we've tried the sliders, wings, mozzarella sticks, chips and salsa and they were all delicious. They even have a shot special called Walk the Plank, with 7 shots that we usually get for the group. The service is good. Sometimes the bartender is the server so wait might be a minute or two longer, but since we're just hanging out eating and drinking we don't mind. It is a bar afterall. We haven't stayed for the live bands but we've seen them set up and seems like it would be a great time. Hopefully our group would be up for staying late one day to enjoy the bands.

Yelp
On a little jaunt through downtown Los Angeles, the treasured Redwood Bar x Grill beckons in the weary traveler under a glowing neon red sign. The entry is tattered with pirate skeletons, draping fabrics, eerie lighting, and rope lined quarters. The interior of this murky tavern has nautical elements, hung from the ceiling are captains wheels, at the center of the bar is a skull crossed by swords, but oddly enough, plush booth seating is rampant throughout the place. My friend and I perched ourselves in a booth near the live music, towards the back of the house, on a casual weeknight. Famished, I ordered the grilled shrimp taco plate that was recommended by the waitress, and a MaiTai which was labeled as "shaken to perfection with a special float on top." When everything came out, I was served a flaming MaiTai, but the taste of the drink was awful, anything but perfection. I informed the waitress and she kindly took it, said they would make a new one, then returned a few minutes later with a slightly less terrible new one, I would not recommend ordering that drink, although the presentation was good, a bottle of beer would have been a better choice. The grilled shrimp taco plate I would also not recommend, the tacos were drenched in a sauce that I have never experienced on tacos before, the salsa was not edible, the saving grace of the meal was that the beans were prepared right. Our waitress was polite and kind. The other patrons were country music fans, decked out in cowboy hats, jeans and plaid tops, starkly contrasting the maritime theme of the establishment. The live music was enjoyable but there was hardly any room for dancing, it was quite cramped and standing room only if you weren't fortunate enough to snag a booth. Hopefully this sailor's tale will be a word to the wise, if you were contemplating to potentially partake in this libation.

Yelp
Wow! What a great experience. We wanted to go to this pirate bar and there is no disappointment. This is a pirates/live music/sports bar with amazing food. We listened to 70's rock-n-roll from the juke box. We got the sliders and a tuna melt. Large portions on the main meal and the sides - killer onion rings. We sat at the bar, watched the Genesis Open and had fantastic service from Danni. Our glasses were never empty and she was so accommodating with our meal substitutes. Great place to spend a few hours relaxing.

Yelp
This place is a touch wacky, and I'm here for it! A friend and I were visiting LA and exploring the neighborhood around Grand Central Market, and when we passed this joint we thought we had accidentally happened upon a tiki bar, as that's certainly how it presents from the outside. We walk in - OK, more of a pirate bar. That's cool too! We grab stools, attempt to ignore the odd smell of the place since the overhead tunes are so cool, and order up a drink. We come to find out this place is called the Redwood, and has a nautical theme. Before my drink even kicked in, my head was spinning! But hey a dive bar is always a cool thing, and their weird wonderful personalities, no matter how messy or schizo, are part of the charm. Folks were very friendly, it was lively but still welcoming on a Friday night, and our bartender poured heavy. How could I possibly complain? I would definitely pop in again if in the neighborhood to try their eats! And no matter what, a good time was had visiting this conversation piece of a watering hole. Thank you Redwood for the buzz and the memories!

Yelp
Johnny was our bartender gave out great vibes. Loves his job very much you can literally feel the vibes it was awesome. Sage was our server. She was really cool and chill. Our food came out pretty quick and it was actually delicious. We ordered grants wings.. This place is really cool it's It's like a little pirate gem.The vibe is dark An intimate. I highly recommend this place if you're walking around LA bored and wanna try somethey new and random. They have a lot of liquor Variety. My boyfriend and I came on a saturday. I recommend coming when Johnny is bartending seriously awesome vibes. You can tell he's just naturally awesome.

Yelp
The drinks were definitely watered down but the ambiance was nice. Need to place ceiling fans. My suggestion

Yelp
Called in to try and do a pickup order for food and here's how it went down: ME: Hi there can I place and order for pickup? GUY WHO ANSWERED: No *hangs up*
google avatar

Yelp
Monday karaoke at redwood is always a great choice. The staff is always welcoming and they have the best catalogue. Beer is cold, booths are comfortable and the lighting is on point.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here as a fluke. Service was good food was meh. Tried to use their Yelp check In for 10% off and the waitress checked with the bar tender/manager who said he didnt know anything about it. Hmmmmm okay guess not.
google avatar

Lynnie M.

Yelp
THE MOST UNFRIENDLY PEOPLE! I called today to order take out and was rudely told "you have to order when you get here" click! Crossing this place off my places to eat in DTLA.
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
The smell of rancid cooking oil permeates the air here. Tables feel tacky. Pirate stuff is cute, but I wouldn't eat food here or stay very long due to the smell. It's sad because it could be so great, but if you have a working sense of smell and/or you're familiar with the very specific and unmistakable scent of rancid cooking oil, you'll be put off. Hopefully it was a once off bad afternoon and it isn't like this all the time, but looking at the photos people have shared of the food it's alarming.

Yelp
Loved the experience! Went a little while ago for a date night. Went on a Thursday night for dinner and drinks. I remember a friend of mine recommending this place to me, so I thought why not? I'm in the area before my flight the next night. it's the piratey-cheers bar energy that hits you once you wwalk through the door and although it was my first time... i strangely felt at home! It's as if the Pirates of the Carribean ride was a bar. Enjoyed the seating outside at a table where we were served by a really nice woman with a snake tattoo and black hair. Helpful, fun, and personable! Food was delicious and came out fairly quickly. Fish and Chips and the burger is what we ordered 10/10
google avatar

Armando H.

Yelp
Really good spot. The inside has a lot of character but the one item I ordered, fish n chips are pretty dang good. The fries have A very good taste. Be back soon
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Thought we would catch some drinks before a show and decided to try this place out. The aura of a pirate ship is cool but the rest of the place is a dump. I have been to dive bars and this place is a dump. Ordered one beer each for us three and the beer was super flat and the price of ten dollars for a glass is way over priced. It's cheaper on the beach in Newport. Anyways the best part was the bartender. She was absolutely fabulous and very nice. However we will not return here.
google avatar

Shana K.

Yelp
Such a small cool low key venue. The bands were great the bartender was nice and even though I didnt have the food it looks good. Very cool ambiance.

Michael L.

Yelp
Stage was insanely dirty, other than that bartender Danny was incredible, band was amazing, food was amazing, definitely recommend

Yelp
Came by on a Sunday , mid day . Not crowded at all . It is a neat little hidden gem with a really cool ambience . Pirate themed and very sweet bartender , I believe her name was Dani or Danny . We just had a couple brews and the "spicy fries ". The fries didn't look like anything g special but we're surprisingly addicting . I asked for a side of thousand island to dip them in and ... yum ! The ranch dressing they came with was pretty watery and gross . Am I glad I came by ? Yes ! Do I need to go again , no probably not . If I'm in the area and want some good fries and fairly priced drinks would I go back - definitely . I would stop by at least once if you've never been ... don't forget ... spicy fries with a side of thousand island and drinks . Have fun !
google avatar

Airedale W.

Yelp
Came in for lunch. There were very few people in the establishment, and when we received our food, we found it to be tepid. It was hard to comprehend that with no one there, the food was coming out cold. The food tasted good and it wouldn't keep us from coming back again, but couldn't understand, why the hamburger and fries weren't hot.
google avatar

Richie D.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in DTLA! I'm glad it survived the pandemic. Great for a beer and shot if you're going on adventures in LA. Outdoor and indoor seating available. Very friendly staff. I haven't taste the food much except for the fries which were excellent!

Yelp
Redwood Bar & Grill is on 2nd St, south of Hill St in LA. I've passed by this many times and never had the desire to step inside, because the exterior seating area looks dirty, dusty and is always littered with cigarettes, for their smoking diners. Earlier this week, had to attend a lunch meeting with some work acquaintances and they chose this place. Feeling hesitant, I wanted to be a sport and agreed. It passed the time of the rush hour lunch crowd and the inside was almost empty and we sat in one of the booths in the main dining area. Everyone ordered alcoholic drinks, I passed as I had another appointment later. The waitress was nice and suggested their specialty was the clam chowder and fish and chips, so I went with that and an iced tea. Everyone else copied me, ordered the same plus their liquor drinks. Upon presentation, the clam chowder looked different, darker and creamy consistency. After a few spoonfuls and squeezing some lemon juice, it was so salty, I couldn't eat the rest. The fried fish and chips plate had a cup of slaw and tartar sauce and looked good, but I was wrong. The fish was cooked thoroughly but was way too salty, despite lemon juice or tartar sauce. The chips looked like home made thick cut potato chips and were overly fried to the point of too toasty burnt. Our waitress disappeared down into the imaginary ship vessel, this restaurant's theme. From a distance, the interior decor is like an outdated want to be ship with interesting motifs. Upon a closer look and inspection, it's heavily dusty with cob webs. Everyone else seem to be okay with their food, but I'm not shocked, this is a group of chain smokers and alcoholics with numb or non existent taste buds or food epicurean taste..sorry that's the truth. After pushing my salty chowder and salt mind of fish and chips plate away, 2 of this group (guy and gal) attacked my plate of food like a pack of wolves. If I was alone, I would have been furious and sent everything back, as it was all inedible to me. Such a disappointment because I ordered the house specials, and I get this salty gross meal yuck! I had to leave and wanted to pay my lunch and the waitress was nowhere so I walked up to the bar area and asked the female bartender for my bill. After I paid and annoyingly left a tip, the waitress appears. I informed her how bad and overly salty and inedible the food was, and all she said was she would 'let the cook know.' She should have followed up after presenting the food, but she never showed up, instead did a disappearing act, not good, unprofessional! This restaurant/bar is a Dive, aka a dirty dark dusty dingy watering hole that serves salty food. If you're a drinker, maybe all this saltiness will not bother you and some people are okay with that, just NOT for me. I don't care if you had a fantastic meal here, and gave it 5 stars, not every place is for everyone. I'm not even in trying other specials, salmon burger? not here, no way. FYI Best charbroiled salmon burgers are at Moonshadows, Gladstone's In Malibu and Astro's in West Hollywood. Perhaps if service was available, salty food would be tolerable, but our waitress was the only one around and she never followed up or offered to redo or edit the bill. Unless you really like sodium, it's your place. Cannot recommend Hell No! Water Grill calling me...

Yelp
Had the fish tacos for lunch here through Meal Pal, it was A-Okay, not very memorable. Looks like this meal is typically $16 if you come to the restaurant, which is crazy. I'm glad I did not pay that much. No need to return. Note: This was part of my MealPal experience. Check out my Mealpal DTLA collection of you want to follow along. If you are scratching your head about MealPal...google it.

Yelp
I came here for happy hour with my friend and it was fantastic. Tasty drinks, delicious food, attentive staff, table service, and such a fun vibe! We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I was 0 stars were available Blacks are not allowed here they treat u like trash. I just left after 25 mins everyone else was getting serviced just fine no wait no hassle
