Yelp
Just spent 4 nights here with my GF, and both of us really enjoyed our stay. We needed a budget friendly option, and wanted to avoid chains, but still be in a good location to explore lower Manhattan. This place really hit the mark on all fronts. It is not fancy, but instead quite a cool and unique boutique hotel. It was off season in mid January, so rates were just under $100 a night.
Lots of stuff within easy walking distance in this area of East Village... subway stations, Starbucks/coffee shops, great restaurants, bars and small live music venues (like Rockwood Music Hall, with multiple stages/music options). Hodgepodge neighborhood, but we like it that way, and always felt safe. If you're like us and really like to walk, meaning 15-30 blocks is no big deal and rather a fun way to explore, than there's plenty within not-so-easy walking distance too, like Little Italy, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, TriBeCa, etc. We even walked to the Manhattan Bridge and crossed into Brooklyn on foot, and really only used the subway when we went to Midtown, Central Park, and the like.
Rooms are small in NYC, get over it. This one was actually bigger than we expected, a single queen, with enough room to manage our 2 suitcases and 2 backpacks just fine, and included one bag stand, a desk and chair, 2 night stands, small closet/storage space, and 4 wall hooks to hang our winter coats and gear. You certainly can't stretch out and do Yoga on the floor, but we never felt cramped, just very cozy. Bed was nice and comfortable, windows had shades and curtains to make things dark, and both windows open to let in some air.
TV was there, but we certainly wouldn't waste valuable vacation time turning one on. I assume it worked. WiFi was solid and did the job, and same goes for the alarm clock/radio and blowdryer, all of which we did use.
Bathroom was a good size, hot water is on point, and gets there fast. We also loved the little electric green wall tiles in there, so cool. One oddity though... the entire wall that divides the bathroom from the bedroom was fogged glass, meaning you can kind of see through it. That, paired with the lack of an exhaust fan, can definitely telegraph your play. This might be weird for some, but my GF and I didn't really care. If one of us needed to do some major business, the other would play some music, or hang outside the room for a bit. Which leads me to another plus...
The 7th/top floor has a really cool patio, with both covered and uncovered seating, including a few padded couch sets, enough for several small groups to easily share the outdoor space. There is no bar, but this also means you can do pretty much as you please. We enjoyed a bottle of wine up there on a couple nights, and had the place to ourselves. Smoking is allowed up here, and there's even a small portion that's walled in with canvas to protect you from the wind, with a small table and chairs, so this made for a nice place to hang and drink/smoke even on a cool windy night. The view is pretty good too, unblocked by any surrounding buildings, so you can see Empire, One WTC, Chrysler buildings, etc off in the distance. There is also some sort of basement lounge to hang out, with light beverages and such, but we never made it down there. Patio was too much fun. We did partake in the free coffee and lemonade in the lobby a couple times though, another nice touch.
Staff was quiet and stay out of your way, but super friendly and helpful whenever you need something or have a question. Maid service does their daily job quite well, room is always clean when you return, new linens and towels, etc. Toiletries provided are very basic (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion), but we bring our own and never rely on that stuff anyway.
One final small but key amenity deserves a mention... If you're like me and try to maximize that last day of your trip by booking a late flight out, you may also be like me and forget till the last minute that oh no!... we have to check out at 11am, where will we store the bags all day?? When I asked the front desk about storage for our 4 bags, they didn't even bat an eye. Although this may be the norm for NYC, it is not in many cities, at least not at budget friendly hotels, so this was a huge plus for me, and greatly appreciated. We of course tipped when returned for our bags, but otherwise this service was free of charge.
All and all an excellent hotel for the price, and doubt I'll even bother looking for a new place to stay the next time I visit lower Manhattan, as this place would be very hard to beat.
