Yelp
(Visited 11/23/22 WE @ 1:30pm - 2:30pm): The rink was the center of all the action!
An item on my travel bucket list, I finally got my skate on at the famous iconic landmark The Rink At Rockefeller Center https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=4uO9s4CF4p4Q9Mg9A3LUJA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. I've always had a fascination with this place from the countless times I've seen it in movies and shows and swore one day I would lace up and cut some ice! I've been to New York City several times but always during warmer weather. Last year was my first time in cold wintery weather, but my lateness making reservations plus COVID put a kibosh on my ice skating dreams. The pandemic was still with us in a more manageable presence and life was slowly returning to some sense of normalcy whatever that meant now. With things in my favor, was my blades of steel moment all I thought it would be!?
PURCHASE
General Admission Adult 1-Hour Ice Skating Session ($38.00): Like surge pricing, it varied throughout the day based on the time where the lowest fares were early or late in the day; whereas, the higher rates were during the middle of the day. Thankfully, I paid the middle-of-the-road although I felt it was still pricey. Hey, it was a tourist trap and something I've always wanted to do, so prices be damned! FYI... There was also a VIP option with astronomical prices.
Ice Skates Rental ($11.00): This was a fixed rate that was more palpable. Honestly, I felt they could've charged whatever they wanted since it appeared the majority of those on the rink were out-of-towners like myself and wouldn't be traveling with a pair of skates https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ujFbJHelcOVKXBaHRqcddg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
SERVICE
The online purchase was a breeze. Once you arrived, there was someone who queued the masses of excited skaters into time blocks in an orderly fashion and somehow managed to keep the long line intact. The staff behind the counter who ran the skate rentals were robotic and zombie-like as they shuffled in-and-out skates after skates after skates. The attendants in the changing & locker area had more personality and boisterous about the free lockers to store your stuff. Then, you had the rodeo clown who wrangled the groups behind a gate and got everyone excited and riled-up before we were released onto the ice. Lastly, about 45 minutes into my session, the Zamboni came out to resurface the ice for a cleaner faster slicker skate-around https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rTK7QXnB7KeI_fSEsnwnHg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Everything ran like clockwork - great job!
PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance)
Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, there was an onsite parking garage or you could take your chance in trying to find a spot along the many congested streets that surrounded the area. Otherwise, just simply walk as I did, or there were a plethora of nearby subway stations - 'nuff said.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
A large oblong ice rink in a sunken plaza that was the former site of a fountain, it was arguably the focal point of Rockefeller Center itself. Surrounded by staircases that led to and from the rink and stone buildings that housed various businesses and offices, anyone walking by had to sneak a peek at the action. Obviously, there was plenty of natural lighting during the day while a flood of electric street and outdoor lights filled in the rest at night. I saw no TVs while music from the ice skating rink and the general hustle-and-bustle of the buzzing activity bombarded your ears. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=RuyY34nEuF4WiXvL6QHouQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
ATTIRE
At this time of year, I was wrapped up in a beanie, thermals, goose down jacket, jeans, and clunky winter boots.
OVERALL
The Rink At Rockefeller Center fulfilled a longtime dream, but now that I've ice skated on it, I didn't feel I needed to do it again. By all means, everyone should get on the ice and have a go-around for the mere fact of its historical significance. However, the rink was smaller than I expected, the crowds were insane, and the prices were high. Yet, I still found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $49.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they and all surrounding businesses accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS
