Yelp
I have been here twice so far, once in the fall and once in the spring. Unfortunately because both visits were inconsistent I have to give this property four stars instead of the full five.
I will say right from the get go that if you are not celebrating something that you should wait to visit until you do have a birthday or anniversary. Their system is incredible in that most of the staff will be alerted to your special celebration and you may even receive a small gift delivered to your room, or special small desserts during brunch or dinner on property. The small gift usually is a bottle of wine (Cabernet Sauvignon), but could include other goodies depending on who the guest relations person is. Marlene did a wonderful job coordinating for our anniversary and we felt well taken care of throughout our stay.
My first time at the property (October) they did not try at all to recognize my request for an early check in. They also failed to call me when my room was ready and when I got to the room they did not complete the feather-free treatment I requested. An hour later we were settled into a new room with a fire pit and nearly passed out in the elevator and the hallway with all of the strong gas odors throughout the first floor. The extra price, in my opinion, is not worth it. Just stay in their standard accommodations and enjoy the fire pits outside overlooking the ocean cliffs.
My second time at the property (April) was perfect. They honored my request for early check in, had the room de-feathered, my bags and luggage were sent up after we were settled in, and the turn down evening service was a nice touch with the smooth chill music playing on the in-room radio/alarm clock, chocolates, extra glass-bottled waters and our toiletries neatly arranged in the bathroom. Upon checking out, we discovered that the valet parking team had topped up the charge on our electric car, which was a great amenity we did not expect.
If you are planning on eating on property, my suggestions by meal:
Brunch at Navio, it's a two-hour all you can eat experience ranging from starting dishes like caviar tasting with blini, to a simple salad, to typical brunch fare like Belgian waffles to Benedicts, to heavier fare like lamb or beef, and a finale of several small cakes, pastries and tarts. Worth the nearly 200 per person cost (excludes any drinks you may like, even a simple drip coffee costed extra). Make your reservation two months in advance on Tock.
Afternoon snacks and drinks at the Ocean Terrace, especially if you like shrimp cocktail or artichoke dip. Ritz guests have their own dedicated section with a better view of the ocean cliffs away from the screaming children on the lawn, and dedicated fire pit to sit around and benefit from the heat. It can get cold out in Half Moon Bay even on a sunny day so the warmth is welcome. No reservation was necessary to be seated promptly.
Dinner at the Conservatory, with a good range of appetizer, entree and dessert options and much more affordable than dinner at Navio. Navio's tasting menu is overrated for the price and the flavors clash in your mouth and in your stomach. Make your Conservatory reservation a few days to a week in advance on Tock, or earlier if you're that determined.
Check in around 2:30pm or so to get in on free glass(es) of white or red wine, even if your room may not be ready yet. Also, give yourself some time in the mornings to book an activity! You can book with the concierge or on their website. Love this property for tennis, golf, and pickleball. Just be mindful for tennis that some of the Colony Club members can act entitled to their court time so note that if your reservation says 9am-10am, expect that there may be people lingering into your time. Don't be afraid to let the staff know during your check in that people need to be asked to leave. You may get a dirty look from club members but a reservation is a reservation, hold your head up high and enjoy your time!
