Best Hotels and Resorts in the World: The Gold List 2022

"Some large hotels can seem impersonal and lacking in character. Instead, The Ritz-Carlton, Abama—a monumental vision of faintly surreal, multilayered Moorish pink—feels more like a curious labyrinthine village; a place to get happily lost in, among all those palm trees, curving walkways, and aquamarine pools with sharp, dissonant angles. The sense of a total escape is helped by the fact that the hotel is a world unto itself: With views beyond the white-sand beach to the neighboring island of La Gomera, it is mostly surrounded by a golf course (owned separately), beyond which the volcanic Mount Teide looms ominously large. Flying and flopping may be unfashionable, but I can’t think of a better place to do just that of a European winter (Tenerife is T-shirt-warm all-year-round). There are more than eight restaurants and bars, including Michelin-starred Basque and Japanese fusion; the kids’ club, with art walls, is one of the biggest in Europe; and the spa takes opulent inspiration from Roman baths. But the joy here is just being: hiking along the rugged coast or floating from pool to pool, as the sun casts lines of shadows over pink stucco walls and eventually settles over the peaks of La Gomera. Doubles from $500. —David Moralejo" - CNT Editors

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama (Tenerife, Canary Islands) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Canary Islands are hardly an undiscovered vacation spot. In recent decades, the sunny Spanish getaway, and the island of Tenerife in particular, have become synonymous with hordes of visitors on holiday. It’s a highly developed tourist destination, with the benefit that travelers can find almost anything they need. But unique, stylish hotels have remained somewhat elusive, in a sea of chain resorts catering to families and spring breakers." - Tablet Hotels

DO NOT STAY HERE: Extremely Disappointing Service Experience While some of your services at the property have been good, others have been absolutely unacceptable, and my upcoming review will reflect that. At your pool and bar area, my wife and I have been consistently treated as if we were invisible. We have personally witnessed multiple groups come in after us, receive immediate service, and enjoy full attention, while we sat waiting—often without so much as an acknowledgment. Over the past three nights, the only way we were able to get served was for me to physically go to the bar myself. On the beach, the experience was no better. We waited over an hour and a half for seats. We arrived on the shuttle with several other families, who all appeared to be seated quickly with no issue. It wasn’t until we questioned the long delay that we were told we would be next. Even then, we waited so long that we ultimately gave up and returned to our room. This is incredibly disappointing—especially as this trip was meant to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We specifically chose your resort expecting quality service and hospitality, but instead, we’ve experienced the opposite. Unless you want to be ignored, stared at , not serviced, have to flag down staff, and then have them lie right to your face . People of color DO NOT STAY HERE!

We’ve just come back from a fantastic stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama. It came highly recommended, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly helpful and made sure everything ran smoothly so we could really relax.||We’d asked for a quiet room in the Citadel, and we were really pleased — it was spacious, super comfortable, and in a great spot.||The food was a big highlight. We had some amazing dinners, and the breakfast each morning was excellent. We especially loved Verde Mar — the food was full of flavour and had great vegan and vegetarian options. Most of the restaurants catered well for plant-based choices, but Verde Mar really stood out.||The poolside restaurant, Txoko, was a bit of a let-down in comparison. The setting is lovely, but the menu felt limited and didn’t offer the same value or experience as the other places.||The Beach Club was a lovely spot for lunch — the salad was fresh and generous, and the view was stunning.||We also had a massage at the spa, which was absolutely top notch — really relaxing, and the spa area itself is beautifully serene. It was very quiet while we were there. If prices were a bit more accessible, I think more people would use it.||The resort runs a range of fitness classes. Some are free and others aren’t — it would have been nice if a few more were included, especially since the free ones were the best attended.||All in all, we had a brilliant time. It’s a beautiful, well-run resort with attention to detail and genuinely lovely service. We’ll definitely come back.||Highly recommended

I generally consider my stay at the Ritz Carlton Abama to be enjoyable. I expected more, but there were a few things that disappointed me. Positives: • Very friendly hotel staff, including everyone at the reception, pool, beach, and restaurants. • Delicious breakfasts. • Room cleaning twice a day. • Taxis arrive quickly and will take you anywhere you need. Negatives: • The restaurant does not offer a buffet for dinner. • The two best Michelin-starred restaurants were closed, even though we came for vacation in July, which is exactly when they should be open since this is when travelers come for holidays. We had to use other restaurants with a limited theme and a very small selection of dishes. Several of the remaining restaurants aren’t even open every day, but for example only 3–4 days a week. • In the restaurants, there are many dishes on the menu that are only available for two people, and when my girlfriend wanted to order just one dish, she couldn’t, as they would only prepare it for two. There were many such dishes. This is a complete red flag. • Everything is far from the hotel. • The pool is small, and it is impossible to swim there because it is crowded with children, while the retreat pool is only available for villa guests. This is extremely unfair • When I would turn on the air conditioning in the room, water was dripping from the ceiling I will probably not return there, as the lack of a dinner buffet is a red flag, and the on-site restaurants are outrageously expensive. Also, the inability to use the retreat pool forces you to swim in a small pool crowded with screaming kids, which is simply unacceptable. Because guess what… other pools were also closed for holidays. How can you close 2 main restaurants and the pools for the most important vacations month of the year!

Our third visit to the Ritz Carlton in Abama and I will start by saying WOW !|We stayed in the Adults Only area of the Retreat which is the equivalent to the Hotel's Club level. The rooms are away from the main hotel in lanes with gardens and pools to separate them. The room was spacious and comfortable with really good air conditioning. The Housekeeping service was excellent, and the room was immaculately clean and always well stocked with dry towels and toiletries. We always appreciate the turn down services that seem so rare these days but very nicely done here each evening.|The Retreat has a choice of pool areas all looked after by friendly and competent lifeguards and service staff to serve the drinks and food. There are snacks available throughout the day, and drinks by the pool are complimentary as are the food presentations which a really excellent. In particular the lunchtime Tapas and afternoon sweet buffet which varied every day and irresistible (sadly leading to weight increase as I could not say no !). |Breakfast in El Mirador was superb, with a lovely view. |We ate in El Mirador for dinner, along with meals in Verona and MB all of which were excellent with superb service, where attention to detail was very evident.|In all honesty this was a real 5 star experience. Every detail was taken care of and although we did not have any issues I know that the team here would do their best to help if that had of been. Everyone was so helpful, friendly and kind with a genuine attitude of care. We honestly cannot wait to go back........... highly recommend!

Staying here. In all 6 nights here so far not once has a member of senior staff introduced themselves to us, or asked about our stay - which we’d expect from a ritz Carlton. Managers should be present. There are issues, the room has drainage issues and smelt like sewage for our first four nights, after 2 complains it has improved - but no apology or follow up to check we’re happy it’s resolved. I am stunned a room that smelt like sewage doesn’t even flag an apology - or offer a move to an alternative room, but this hotel doesn’t care about guests from what I can see. The restaurants we tried are excellent but the staff often forget at least one of the drinks we order. In Verde Mar we added a veal steak as a side, the menu said EUR 10 extra, when the bill came EUR 18 extra. We could make a comment but we don’t think anyone would care or there would be an improvement. We asked for our mini bar to be removed - that’s a EUR 10 charge - that’s a bit cheap and a bit Nickel and Dime, I get the impression this hotel is going the Nickel and Dime route, so be careful - stuff other hotels will do for goodwill are expensive problems here! The hotel is good but not excellent - we won’t come back here. I wish Marriott would open another resort in Tenerife.

My husband and I stayed at the Ritz Carlton, Abama in January 2025 for our honeymoon. The trip itself was beautiful—stunning grounds, luxurious accommodations, and a peaceful atmosphere. We truly enjoyed our time there. However, shortly after returning home, we noticed an unusual charge on our account that did not match anything we spent during our stay. We found this suspicious and immediately reached out to the hotel. Since then, we’ve contacted the Ritz Carlton multiple times—by phone and email—but have received no resolution. Each time I call, I’m told to send an email and that someone will get back to me. It’s now been several months, and no one has followed up. No explanation. No refund. No accountability. It’s extremely disappointing that a hotel of this caliber would be so unresponsive to a billing issue. Because of this ongoing situation and lack of support, I’m forced to give one star for service. It’s unacceptable that I’ve been chasing this since January with no resolution in sight. Update: someone from the hotel finally reached out to me below responding to my message and as I sent information over to the email provided, no one replied.

This is a fantastic resort with great facilities and dining options. The rooms are very comfortable and spacious. We also had a wonderful view looking onto the main pool and golf course. If you are after a relaxing time, you can get a sunbed by the main pool or even find your way down to the hotel's private beach (transport by mini train is offered daily). There are numerous restaurants in the hotel (a number being Michelin star restaurants!). Service is great and food is excellent. The hotel's buffet breakfast is brilliant with a wide choice of hot and cold items including live egg stations. For breakfast you can choose between indoor as well as outdoor seating. You will also find a great lobby bar which is the ideal place for a drink in the evening while live music is played in the terrace. There are also a number of boutiques in case you are after some shopping ;) The hotel is a little distant from other towns and beaches so you will need a car if you'd like to discuss south tenerife. Great hotel overall!

This was my second time staying at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama – last year I came with my cousin, and this time with my girlfriend – and once again, it exceeded all expectations.||The guest service is absolutely exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed and cared for. The reception team was always friendly, helpful, and professional – every request was handled with a smile and great attention to detail.||A very special thank you goes to Julia and Leticia from the Beach Bar – they truly made our stay unforgettable. Their warmth, attentiveness, and positive energy made every visit to the beach bar a highlight of our trip.||Also, a big shoutout to Diana from the Italian restaurant, who gave us the most beautiful evening of our entire holiday on our last night. The service, the ambiance, and of course the food – everything was perfect, and it left a lasting impression.||The entire team deserves praise – we have rarely felt so genuinely welcomed and well taken care of at a hotel.||We will definitely be back – and we’re already looking forward to it!

Yelp
We just returned from the most magical vacation at the Ritz Abama in Tenerife, and honestly, five stars aren't enough to describe how incredible our experience was. I don't think we've ever visited a more stunning resort. The Ritz redefines luxury and sets a new standard for what a resort should be. From the moment we arrived -- where we were welcomed by name at the gate -- we were treated like royalty. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel special every moment. It's the attention to detail: twice-daily housekeeping, swift room service and concierge responses, their own locally sourced water bottle, the car valet guys also being on top of it... the list goes on. The property is simply breathtaking. There are several pools, including an adults-only one, multiple restaurants (including a Michelin-starred option), stunning ocean views, a breakfast that outshines any hotel we've ever stayed at, and even a private beach, where guests are taken down via the hotel's cable car. Every corner of the resort exuded luxury. We mentioned we were getting married during our stay, not expecting much, but the staff went above and beyond to make our special day even better. From balloons and desserts delivered to our room to coming back from the ceremony and finding "I love you" spelled out in rose petals on our bed -- the service was on another level. Thank you, Abama staff, for making our stay unforgettable. We can't wait to return!

Yelp
Struggled with the check in process which was a bad way to start a holiday. Typically expect a Ritz to handle details better.

Yelp
Love the resort! Great spacious rooms with a view. Breakfast is included. The rooms are cleaned twice a day. Water and suntan lotion at the beach and pool. For those that left it in the room. Hospitality is top notch. Everyone is helpful and everything is great. Highest standards are held here.

Yelp
The Abama Beach is a great little secluded cove with blue water, calm waves for families and even some rocks to jump off at low tide. It is run by the Ritz so when we booked the beach club restaurant for lunch we expected "Ritz like" quality. The view was the show but from tip to tail this experience was a disaster. We were 6 and menu is average to start with nothing particularly Canarian and could have been the Ritz in any country. We ordered simple dishes as fish was out (always nice to not have enough of the fish if the day) - burgers, salad, chicken. The first issue was they mixed our tables and gave our food to the next and then the dominos started. They brought meals out in random order so none of us ate together. One burger was wrong, the other was raw, the croquettes were cold, the salad bland and even the lemon we order for the water never came. It was a circus! Our waitress was so embarrassed that she could barely speak and this would have all been ok if the manager would have made it right but for some reason he doubled down and just ignored it ! This was supposed to be the sure thing..... go to ritz beach club for great lunch on the sea... right? As a Platinum Bonvoy for life that has stayed 1000 Ritz nights... this was my all time worst experience. Wow.

Yelp
Best vacation of my life. Princess treatment and the best care by every worker in there. Truly felt like a luxury stay. Anything we needed was done for us within seconds. All of the restaurants were beautiful and unique. The room was absolutely stunning and the best shower of our lives. Lovely beach, with great tanning chairs and amazing service. The breakfast buffet was exceptional (not to mention the tasty caviar) and had everything you could ever want. Parking is easy if you want to rent a car. Otherwise, they offer efficient transportation at all times. Highly recommend kabuki and the beach club.

Yelp
I recently enjoyed my stay at the Ritz Cartlon Abama. Full disclosure...my objectivity may be jaded as this was a business trip reward from my company. It is an annual pilgrimage for the top sales performers at my company. It is a 5 night trip to a different location and you are able to table your spouse/guest. This year was the island of Tenerife in the canary islands....Ritz Carlton Abama. The hotel is quite lovely, tremendous location with at least 7 pools and a private beach. 3 things made this trip very special. The room, I was given the most beautiful villa overlooking the infinity pool, ocean and cliffs. The service, the staff was outstanding. Anything I needed was taken care of in a NY minute Spending quiet time with my wife. 2 downsides Being in the villas, we would gave to call for a buggy (golf cart) to be transported to main reception. We could have hiked it but hell...I am on vacation The most I ever waited was 10 minutes. Most times we were picked up within 2 minutes. We were given buffet breakfast seats daily, the food was very good but the menu was the same daily and they never offered Eggs Benedict which is fat boy Johnnys favorite breakfast food. The first night they had a pool side party for us, between my company and the Ritz they did an outstanding job. Poolside Paella making, chafing dishes with spanish specialties....fantastic 2 other nights we had time on our own. Shuttle busses available....we hit de las americas area and found an outrageous tapas grill (review to come later) The last evening we had a white party on the beach. Again the food was fantastic. There are several restaurants on site including rooms service. Unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to dine inside the restaurants. I had service at the pool and service at a lounge. Both times the food was delicious. Seevice at the pool was over the top, towels, ice, cocktails etc was excellent The Ritz Carlton is still top of the line for me.

Yelp
The facility, food and stuff are great! We got to use the private beach, cable car and harbor, plus a few of pool side restaurants. Only wifi going down getting annoyed my friends, while I enjoy vacation from social networking. :-)

Yelp
What a terrible place! Had the unfortunate luck to be there for the new year. The promised party did not happen. We had to rush out to another place at the last minute. Needless to say this was not ideal on New Year's Eve! This place is a mess. The golf carts used to ferry people around run on diesel! The fumes are unbelievable! Why oh why not use electric carts like a lot of other places? Just one of the many things overlooked. It's noisy, smelly, messy and just a disaster generally. Almost a fawlty towers like experience!

Jeff P.

Yelp
Awesome views. Exceptional Service. Great food! This place is fantastic! We went kidless and found great spots that were adult only. For the folks with kiddos it appears to also be a solid choice. The main pool was geared around families and they look several activities kids looked to be having a great time at.
