Why One of America’s Best Chocolate Brands Is Calling It Quits | Eater

"Founded and operated for 12 years by a single maker who began crafting chocolate in a 400-square-foot Minneapolis room while working a cheese counter, this small craft chocolate company built a cult following for its $16 bars and for a strict no-inclusions approach. It sourced beans at roughly twice the minimum price from independent farms in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras, earned attention from national outlets and reviewers, and deliberately pursued labor‑intensive, high-quality processes that limited scale to about 1,000 bars a month. Facing inadequate income, rising living costs, heavy travel burdens, and concerns about the product’s climate and material footprint, the owner launched a June crowdfunding campaign seeking $75,000 (about $11,000 pledged so far) to finish a final batch, clear debts, and transfer equipment and institutional knowledge to a cocoa-producing owner—ideally a farmer-owned cooperative or an origin-based producer in West Africa—to shift production power to growers and preserve the factory’s know‑how. The proposed transferees would need basic facilities (rooms, plumbing, HVAC), industrial electrical reliability or backup power, and capacity to operate conching equipment; the founder has also explored modular factory concepts to decentralize production. If the campaign fails, the likely outcome is liquidation that would disperse assets and lose the internal knowledge built over the company’s lifetime." - Brenna Houck

Super cute place and loved learning about the cacao process in their factory room. The samples were delicious & especially enjoyed the chili chocolate bar! Treated myself to a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie

Good place to visit for sweets (no lunch anymore). Carmelita is delicious! Head to second floor to see how they make their chocolate bars from cocoa. You can taste free samples of all the different chocolates they make.

Saw bad reviews before we go, we decided to get 5 bars to try. It’s actually tastes as good as samples. We were there 1/7 and All bars printed before the day we go, I opened oldest one which is 10 days from now still tastes fresh and good. Package is only use foil wrapped around no seal so I put the whole box in ziplock.

The chocolate is mouth watering and the El Cabrito Diablito hot sauce might be the best I've ever tried. We plan on buying more from their website. The hot sauce was 7 dollars so that's a great price in my opinion. The coco chocolate beans were 20 dollars and they were not as expected so I don't recommend that, but all in all, a great place to visit in Honduras. Also as an added benefit, there are a few souvenir stores right beside it where I got this hand painted shot glass.

Came here a few times. The chocolate peanutbutter brownie was great. We also bought a chocolate bar for 5$. Tour was cool, come before 3pm before the machines get turned off.

My wife and I just got back from a week in West End, and we found ourselves at the Chocolate Factory every single day. After we did the chocolate making class, I was absolutely obsessed. I love their chocolate as well as their fresh baked goods; everything we tried was exceptional! I also admired all of their conservation efforts as well as their dedication to 100% cacao products. If you’re planning a trip to the island, make sure to leave room in your schedule to check out the Chocolate Factory!

Roatán Chocolate Factory is a sweet adventure you don’t want to miss! From bean to bar, they show you the whole process behind making real, rich, and delicious chocolate. Don’t leave without grabbing a bar (or five) of their local creations.

Review of Roatan Chocolate Factory During a short excursion on a cruise, my mom and I visited the Roatan Chocolate Factory. Initially, we were impressed—the samples they provided were absolutely delicious, and the presentation of the factory was engaging. Convinced by the quality of the samples, we decided to purchase 10 bars of chocolate for $60, expecting to enjoy the same taste at home. However, upon returning, we were shocked and deeply disappointed to discover that every single bar of chocolate we bought was out of date. It felt like a complete rip-off, especially after spending so much money. What made it worse is that this wasn’t the only excursion where we felt taken advantage of, but this one was particularly upsetting because we were looking forward to enjoying the chocolate and sharing it with others. I would caution anyone visiting this establishment to double-check the product dates before purchasing. While the samples and the experience might seem tempting, the quality of the products sold didn’t match what was promised. Unfortunately, this left a sour taste on what was supposed to be a sweet memory.
