The Top 20 Finalists in the Great Jones Manhattan Competition | Eater

"Storm King is a fall-inspired twist on the classic Manhattan. Combining Great Jones Empire Rye with apple brandy, sweet vermouth, and a touch of Amaro Montenegro, this cocktail captures the essence of Hudson Valley’s apple season. With its spiced apple notes and orange twist garnish, it pays homage to the nearby Storm King Art Center, inviting a taste of autumn in every sip. “It felt right to name this cocktail after the sculpture garden in Beacon, New York, which is absolutely gorgeous in the fall. While it’s not in Manhattan, it’s just a short train ride away,” Katz says." - Julia Gómez Kramer

"BEM, the city’s first Black-owned cookbook shop, is raising funds to set up a temporary cafe at the BRIC House, a studio and performance space at 647 Fulton Street, at Rockwell Place, in Fort Greene. The bookstore started with online sales in 2021, before running a series of pop-ups across the city, including one in the gift shop of the Museum of Food and Drink. The team plans to open a permanent storefront this fall." - Luke Fortney

I go here after work for Happy Hour. The prices, food and drinks are really good. I really like the Cheeseburger and the Pesto sandwich. I always get both when I go lol I will definitely be returning.

Google
We had a great experience at The Rockwell Place. Friendly staff who go the extra mile to understand your preferences. Really nice cocktails and a fun selection of different martinis. Reasonably priced as well.

Google
The Rockwell Place is my favorite and go to neighborhood cocktail bar. It’s chic, lively, and has a great menu and staff. On multiple occasions I’ve asked for special accommodations and time and time again they’ve helped out. Truly a great place with great people and I’ll be a patron for as long as I’m living in Brooklyn.

Google
Great find - well built drinks, good efficient service and nice crowd. The ‘sour from the tap’ is excellent with tequila blanco and the dirty blue cheese martini went down well. Well balanced, well made and delicious. Sparkling water on tap for all patrons. Will visit again.

Google
The dinks was very good, also chicken skewers was delicious, I recommend this place, the bartender made very good drinks! Place is modern and cool.

Google
Went to this bar on a Saturday night with three of my Asian girlfriends — all of us well over 30 — and honestly had one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had in NYC. We had almost finished our first round of drinks when the manager suddenly came over and asked all four of us to show our IDs. Not at the door, not when we ordered — after we were nearly done drinking. And later we noticed — he didn’t ask anyone else for ID, just us. That already felt discriminatory. Then it got even weirder. I was holding a vape — not using it, not even bringing it into the restroom or anywhere discreet. We were sitting right in the middle of the main hall. Still, the same manager came up and told me to “put it somewhere he couldn’t see it.” I told him I wasn’t using it, and he said, “I know, but still — put it in your bag.” I was honestly trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but there was just no excuse for that kind of behavior. We felt so uncomfortable that we just paid and left. I’ve lived in NYC for years and have never experienced anything like this. If you’re a person of color — especially Asian — or if you have a vape, think twice before going.

Google
Totally stumbled into this place and absolutely loved it. The happy hour drinks were amazing, we ordered the spritz they had (which was one of the better apertif spritzes I've ever had) and the coconut sazerac which was a delicious take on an old fashion. Staff was all very friendly and the atmosphere is unbeatable. Most patrons we saw appeared to be enjoying some post-work drinks but this would also be a great spot for a date or just to enjoy delicious drinks with friends. I will definitely be back here soon!

Google
Feels off the beaten path and has a down to earth vibe but it's definitely upscale. Upscale cocktails and perfect light food ( I didn't have dinner yet). Prices match the neighborhood, aways a nice time. Staff are wonderful, friendly and sharp

Yelp
better than ever- the new owner has made some exciting changes and I can't believe it could get better! PS- the tuna melt is the best!

Yelp
Walked in at 8 PM on a Saturday (holiday weekend) and our party of 4 had our choice of seating. Pressed Suit and The Buddy were both great. They're not breaking any new cocktail ground here, but it's a super chill spot and suited our needs perfectly!
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
Stopped in for drinks after dinner. I had the pressed suit. Pretty good drink nothing to rave about. The water they bring out was sparking but it seemed to be tonic. Not a fan so I asked for normal water. Service was good.

Yelp
A great cocktail bar downtown Brooklyn. The waiters were very attentive even with a large group. The cocktails were great and not watered down at all. I wish they had a larger food menu or more gluten free options.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
This spot is cute inside, I dislike all the construction outside it's been going on too long. Also, I dislike all their cocktails on the menu, the draft beer was good.

Yelp
The Rockwell Place is a fantastic cocktail bar and restaurant! Tucked between two busy streets near downtown Brooklyn, Rockwell Place manages to pull off a quieter, almost speakeasy sort of vibe. It felt like a great way to escape the busier parts of the neighborhood. They've got tables for dining, as well as an impressive bar with plenty of seating. There's an intimate vibe, with warm, low lighting and a dark interior. Serious bonus points for background music that's actually in the background -- no shouting just to be heard here. I stuck to drinks, so I can't comment on the food menu, but the bartenders were excellent. I'll definitely be coming back here!
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoy going to the Rockwell place. It has a nice atmosphere and some nice wines

Yelp
Comté & taleggio cheese, sun dried tomato-sour cherry jam spread. This is what you get in THE grilled cheese. GET IT. My friend and I contemplated putting in another order after devouring the first. I had no idea this spot was so close to me. Multiple people clearly got the memo as the air was full of laughter on an early Friday evening in early June. The cocktails were memorable as well. I got the Beach Benny (a tropical margarita with reposado tequila, blue curaçao, pineapple, lime, and a hint of ginger and coconut blast) and the Mellow Greyhound (a salty Dog with gin, grapefruit, honeydew melon, lemon, and salted cucumber). Aiming to be a regular this summer!

Yelp
Was introduced to this bar by a friend and wow, what an underrated bar - it's sooooo good. Cocktails? Amazing. Food? Mind blowing. My boyfriend and I keep going back to get their burger because honestly, I think it's one of the best burgers we've ever had. I've been there at least 10 times at this point and I always get the burger and "Use Your Illusion II"cocktail if I want a drink that night. Other items on the menu like their grilled cheese & spicy caulilini is also really good but the burger is forever my #1 there. The burger is just perfect.. the onion... gouda cheese.. and that perfect medium rare bite... ugh perfection. I don't even know the right words to describe it. You're just going to have to trust me and try it. TRUST.

Yelp
Enjoying some delicious moctails in good company! Nice atmosphere with dim lighting and cool background music, great fruity moctails and tasty grilled cheese. Great attentive service.
google avatar

Yelp
Felt like a drink after work and @therockwellplace had nice outdoor seatings for me to just take a breather. Salmon toast was nice but tbh was looking for more snack/food options like fries or fish and chips that can be more filling Chose this cocktail because I like Calpico, but it turned out to be a bit stronger than what I expected. I did like the fruity and tartness though!

Yelp
Having moved back to the area, we had to stop by and haven't had a weekend where we didn't go grab a quick drink! T.H. and I love this bar for various reasons. It's quiet, clean, and well run to start. The bartenders are wonderfully knowledgeable and take their craft seriously. As someone who doesn't drink alcohol, they really go out of their way to create good mocktails for me everyone we go to also make my experience special. The drink labeled "a non-alcoholic drink" is a wonderful start but ask any of the bartenders to make a base of whatever fruit or herb you're craving and they will do a fantastic job. A special shout to my husband's favorite bartender Nate who always seems to read his mind for the next cocktail and for making excellent soothing cocktails for my extremely tumultuous pregnant stomach. 5 stars for a good vibe, great service, and a wonderful product.

Yelp
My boyfriend introduced me to this place recently and I'm glad he did. This place is aesthetically pleasing and the vibes are chill. The music isn't loud which makes this a great place to sit and chat. The staff is friendly and from what I heard the food is delicious. I didn't get the chance to try the food during my first first but I can tell you that the drinks are well made. The two that caught my eye were the Beach Benny and the Japonaise. The Beach Benny is not only pretty but delicious. I could see my self enjoying this drink more during the warmer months. The great thing about this place is that they offer some drinks hot. My boyfriend ordered The Spaghetti Incident in the Jungle (hot). I found the drink to be interesting... not really knowing how to describe it. Most importantly, my boyfriend seemed to enjoy it. I will be back to try the food options on their menu.

Yelp
Can't count how many times I've been here. This is one of my favorite bars in the city and I'm so glad it's survived the pandemic. In a low-key location a couple blocks from the BAM, Rockwell Place is churning out high-key great drinks. If you're a cocktail nerd, you'll have a fun time quizzing the bartenders to improvise something for you. Or just order something from the menu; the folks here know what they're doing. And if you don't know much beyond a vodka soda, no worries, this bar is as far from pretentious. The music is at a perfect volume where you can easily hear your companions, thanks to the foam paneling on the walls. Because it's a little tucked away from the main streets in the area, you can pop in on a Friday night with a few friends and be seated right away which I can't say about other bars I love. Check their Instagram - guest bartenders come by on some Tuesdays. The food is solid - burgers and grilled cheese, chips, and the like. But you're here for the drinks and the rating reflects this. Cocktails typically are $18 after tip/tax, which is standard for Brooklyn.

Yelp
Had a small gathering here for my partners birthday, and it was perfect! Great ambiance, dim lighting, subtle background music, and tasty small bites. Not to mention the cocktails! The service was phenomenal - there when we needed them, but not overbearing. Burger was solid as well. It was my first time there, and I'll definitely be back. I highly recommend! Thanks for a great night.

Yelp
I love that they do garnish-less drinks, all of which taste great. The bartenders usually love to great something unique if you want off menu. This is also an amazing date place, everything is really cozy and the seating is designed to be intimate. Plus they usually have low volume music so it is easier to talk. Date night wise it is also super close to a lot of good places to eat around Dekalb so a great place for a nightcap with someone special.

Yelp
Came here with some girlfriends and had a blast! The bar is BEAUTIFUL!!! Really great space, incredible cocktail list. Fantastic service, appropriate prices. The spritz du jour was my favorite.

Yelp
Walk in group of 7 on a busy Friday night. Alex came to us, made some rearrangements and voila, we were sitting and drinking delicious cocktails! Great place, great cocktails and great people!!

Yelp
A fun and chill cocktail bar! I stopped by here last week and had a really great time! Tried a couple of the cocktails and really enjoyed them. The head bartender is amazing too, he made a cocktail for me and it was outstanding! Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!

Amy T.

Yelp
Came with my boyfriend and our friend for a night out. This place has the vibe of a new age vampire. The drinks are delicious and beautiful, and the servers are very kind and attentive. It's a really cool spot, the art is cool- the location is a little out of the way and down a quiet street, just adding to the vampire aesthetic. Good music, good food, check it out!

Yelp
I feel lucky to live so close to this excellent neighborhood gem! Got a coveted bar seat on Cinco de Maio when everything in the neighborhood was full. Had a delicious burger and the drinks are absolutely fabulous! The bartenders were busy but still had great attention to detail. The space is perfect, lofty, warehouse feel with skylights that punctuate the bar with beams of light. Comfortable and ample seating too.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool, cozy cocktail bar sort of in the middle of nowhere. Staff is always friendly and accommodating. They have good cocktail selection and always have great local craft beers as well so it works perfectly when my gf would like a cocktail and I want a hazy ipa.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
I'd been meaning to come here for awhile but since it's a little off the beaten path it took me longer than I wanted. It was fairly quiet for Friday night, which was fine by me. Really cool building and decor inside. Loved the adult Dr. Pepper, which went perfectly with a little snack of potato chips and french onion dip. They've got some other snacks and a few more substantial items and plenty of drink options! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
I had my birthday party here last weekend and really had a wonderful time! Alex and management and staff were fully accommodating to my party of 20+ on a busy Saturday night! The cocktail menu was really original and standard wine tasting and and beer available as well! Appetizers werewolves just OK but good enough. The decor and atmosphere were fun, chic with a great vibe! Covid protocols in place and an eclectic crowd. Overall highly recommend The Rockwell Place for a fun, hassle free evening! Centrally located to all major subway lines for NYC in friends to come in and meet!
google avatar

Selina S.

Yelp
I had a really nice time here, sorry some of the reviewers didn't! I came on a Thursday night and had a cocktail and beer outside. The cocktail was really good and they had other half on tap. The interior looked cute as well. I don't think I would journey here, but if you're in the area it is well worth.
google avatar

Nidhi D.

Yelp
Loved this hidden spot for a quick drink meetup! Awesome vibe and super friendly people. We also tried the grilled cheese which was DELISH. The place is off of the main road but you can't miss the sign once you turn onto it.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is great. Grilled baby Octopus is amazing. OMG. Delicious. My girlfriends had the burger and they loved it
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, I don't think I've ever met a ruder bartender than the one working last night - didn't catch his name but he had long, dark hair. The first drink he made (dirty vodka martini) had so much vermouth it was basically undrinkable, but I suffered through. But the second drink (a vodka soda) was somehow worse, with completely flat soda. We mentioned this to him and he literally couldn't care less; his only response was "that's just the way soda is here" - seriously? Completely unapologetic, almost seemed combative towards us. I was shocked by how rude this guy could be. I get that it's the holidays and you're busy, but if you can't make cocktails or be nice to customers, you have no business being a bartender. I used to love this place, won't be coming back again.

Yelp
Exceptional bro-douchery is to be had at 31 Rockwell Place. Two dudes behind the bar quietly gave my husband and I menus without so much as a greeting while lamenting that unlike their sister bar, The Long Island Bar, they weren't included in the '50 Best Bars'. I wonder why? Was it that these two dudes (who appeared to non-ironically roll out of a corporate IT department or game developer circa 1997) mocking practically every person walking past the floor-to-ceiling window in search of the catercorner door? The lack of waiter service? (Two women seated at a two-top bar-adjacent had to order their food from the bar). Space is fine, old BAM flyers are sweet- thanks to BAM, of course...cocktails were unexceptional as was the music-one star for the warm and personable delivery of a small bowl of warm spiced nuts while we sat at the bar. The bro's behind the bar couldn't be bothered.

Sam K.

Yelp
This place is outstanding! Great cocktails and appetizers! What is also unique, at this bar one can carry on a conversation without raising your voice due to brilliantly designed sound system. Bartenders are great at what they do and very accommodating.
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
I came here with my friend a few weeks ago and it's a super cute spot. The ambiance is dark with a bunch of tables and seats at the bar. The cocktail menu is pretty extensive and they have some light bar snacks and food. The service was good and the cocktails were delicious. I would certainly come back again.

John H.

Yelp
The staff might forcefully bump your chair, and not apologize or remember you. But will speak to you in a condescending tone. This is not a joke.
google avatar

Jesse M.

Yelp
We love this little place, mostly for the staff and the cocktails. Each time we have been there we've had a wonderful time. The atmosphere is unique, it feels off the beaten path, and really fits into the edge neighborhood of Fort Greene/Downtown Brooklyn. The staff is super friendly, they make us laugh each time we are there. The drinks are stellar... this review would be a five star if their food were just a bit better. But please do not let that dissuade you, this place is soooo worth it, and we will keep coming back.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
Have been in 3 times and this place is amazing. Food and cocktails on point, gorgeous interior, friendly staff, really great chill vibe and music. The neighborhood definitely needed this spot and you couldn't ask for a more excellent team to bring something new to the area for before/after BAM! We'll be back!
google avatar

Kimberly D.

Yelp
Cute spot to grab a cocktail before a show at BRIC. Cute cocktail menu, but I ended up ordering a French 75. It was really well made and delicious. Staff was attentive and not pushy. I'love be back!

M M.

Yelp
Tucked away in the alley of Rockwell Place, is a gem. I remember when this bar was an "old school" hip hop place (which was still pretty cool in itself), and now it's a sleek modern bar. I'm so happy it survived the Covid years. Great cocktails, food also pretty good (chicken skewers and the burger was pretty awesome) and above all GREAT service, super friendly! The place gets pretty packed but great energy and vibe throughout.
google avatar

Trishna S.

Yelp
Great place if you get the right bartender. Went on a Friday night and received great service from a gentleman with long brown hair - when his shift was over we were transferred to someone new who was nothing but rude. When we asked what happened to the guy who was serving us so we could tip him properly he said good luck smirked and walked away. He continued to be a complete jerk the entire night. Avoid the dirty blond guy in glasses because apparently you're not good enough to sit at his bar. Would come back since the ambience and cocktails were great but this one bartender ruined the entire experience.
google avatar

Annie E.

Yelp
Came here for a drink and bite before a late show on a Saturday night at BAM-was a little crowded, but was able to snag a spot at the bar! They were out of the vegetarian option, BUT they were able to modify the pasta dish for me! SCORE! (SO GOOD!) I didn't specify my vodka for my martini, but it was smooth as hell, and cold and perfect. Had a few laughs w the rad bartenders, enjoyed the peak-hype Christmas atmosphere. I'll be back for sure-pre or post show, or whenever!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Perfect for pre or post theatre drinks. Or pretty much any occasion. Hidden away on a side street with a unprepossessing exterior and a cool recording studio vibe within. Cocktails are on point.

L M.

Yelp
After an event at BRIC, I decided to check this place out. Very cool spot in a quiet alley. The customers were as diverse as the neighborhood. The design was sparse, but somehow warm. Music good and not loud and the drinks and food fantastic. The cute long haired bartenders were very attentive and friendly. I hope this place succeeds. It will be my go to bar in the hood from now on.

Judzia B.

Yelp
Cute outdoor seating. Needed a few shots to end the night and they were one of the few places open. The frozé is also amazing and refreshing.
google avatar

Graham S.

Yelp
So it may be down a dark street , with an old retro open sign , but well worth the anxiety ..... great bar , awesome bartender don't call home a mixologist .... but I say he is more than that!, place rocks!"

B G.

Yelp
excellent service. great outdoor ambience. reasonable pricing as well. great spot to drink and relax
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Being a fan of Long Island Bar, I was excited to check this place out (same owners). I dropped in last night and was not disappointed. Like LI Bar, there's a somewhat limited menu, but the cocktails I tried were well made. Didn't get food this time but will update this review when I do. (Fans of the LI Bar Burger may be disappointed to learn that there's no burger on this menu, but the items on it looked just as appealing!) The space is industrial-chic and gorgeous, and the clientele was fairly diverse. Will definitely return.

Hannah W.

Yelp
Great space, good music, but an OK cocktail menu and the hospitality could use a little work. I will go back once they've had some time to settle in!

Kelsey M.

Yelp
The Rockwell is pretty cute. I popped by tonight for a quick preshow drink and noticed they were closing for an event in 15 minutes. I was prepared to quickly put away a cocktail and clear out so I sat down and someone at the bar gave me water and a menu as if they were totally fine to serve me quickly. Within 10 seconds another person at the bar approached to say that they had a private event and that they wouldn't be able to serve me. I assured him that I could make quick work if it and while he did eventually serve me I wish he had been nicer about it since someone had welcomed me already. Cocktail was ok.

Daniel W.

Yelp
Great place with creative drinks, nice staff, and quiet atmosphere. Lovely new new addition to the neighborhood.

Ben P.

Yelp
As good as it gets! Such a cozy and sophisticated place for an inventive cocktail. The food is delicious (love the beet salad and flatbread!) and the vibe is unbeatable. Will make this place my Brooklyn go-to. 10/10
