The Best Resorts in the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Messinia is a ravishingly remote corner of the southwest Peloponnese that’s a four-hour drive from Athens (or one hour from tiny Kalamata airport). The Romanos, A Luxury Collection Resort, a 321-room polished-marble flagship, is exclusive, with low-slung buildings wrapped around a series of seductively lit lagoons. It's deeply rooted in the local culture with mmersive experiences that include philosophy walks in centuries-old olive groves and grape harvesting in the organic vineyard. The property is aimed squarely at couples, with poolside cabanas and plunge pools in nearly all its ground-floor rooms and gorgeous views of the sapphire Ionian Sea upstairs. Dark wood and polished marble interiors are quietly understated relative to the glitzy clientele." - CNT Editors

The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, Costa Navarino

"Messinia is a ravishingly remote corner of the southwest Peloponnese that’s a four-hour drive from Athens (or one hour from tiny Kalamata airport). It was well under the radar until the advent of Navarino Dunes, a 320-acre Mediterranean-hugging resort that’s part of the ambitious Costa Navarino development—a modern take on a classic agora of shops, restaurants, cafés, and a cavernous spa flanked by two hotels. The 321-room Romanos is more exclusive, with low-slung buildings wrapped around a series of seductively lit lagoons. It’s aimed squarely at couples, with poolside cabanas and plunge pools in nearly all its ground-floor rooms. Dark wood and polished marble interiors are quietly understated relative to the glitzy clientele. Doubles from $422."

Room had a very heavy dog smell upon check-in. They happily and swiftly changed room for us. We were super unpleasantly surprised at the adults only pool to be served raw/ uncooked chicken wraps to my pregnant wife. BIG red flag. Whoever prepared this should not work in any kitchen. We also suggest they look into the coffee quality. We couldn't enjoy the beach because of the rough waves and deep. Also not enough sunbeds for all guests. Beach sunbeds very poor cheap quality (2/10) for this level of resort. Adult pool sunbed quality were perfect 10/10. Golf was great. Awesome instructor. All staff everywhere are super kind & friendly.

I am extremely happy that I had decided to make the Costa Navarino Romanos resort the place to propose to my now fiancée. It truly exceeded all of my expectations, all thanks to Katerina Giata who went above and beyond to deliver the most beautiful setting for this amazing moment in our lives. We will always remember and cherish the attention to detail that Katerina and other staff provided. I can truly say that this is the best hotel to stay at, as they provided an unmatched service. Thank you so much!

The rooms are very high-end, spacious and well-appointed. If you can get an off-season deal for $400/night, you are getting a great deal. All of the staff are wonderful and take excellent care of the guests. The food is very good and the breakfast buffet is particularly great. Despite this, I am deducting one star due to three serious issues: 1. The wonderful swimming pools, which are a centerpiece of the entire complex, are only open for 7 hours per day. The lack of morning and evening hours shows inexplicable disregard for the preferences of the guests. 2. The food and drinks are incredibly overpriced. I understand adding a little markup at a resort, but dinner inside costs literally 5x what it does outside. 3. There was a private party taking place on the lawn next to the swimming pools, blasting music until 11pm which was loud and disruptive inside our room as well as at all of the open air restaurants. Finally, a mention of shame for an additional 15 EUR / night "climate tax", which was not disclosed until checkout time.

I was here with my family for a week's long holiday at the beginning of July. The resort is great, with several pools, a very nice beach, and the common areas look like a garden. My room was spacious with a nice view and close to the beach. The beds were very comfortable and the infinity pool was a very good solution during the hot weather. The beach is also very nice, with plenty of sunbeds. The resort was full, but it was not felt at all in the common areas, on the beach, or in the restaurants. Perhaps only the pools saw more people. We visited several restaurants, all of them were great with the exception of the buffet at Morias which was not worth it. Restaurant prices were reasonable for what was on offer. We also visited a few bars, they have live music (very good lineup) on some of the days. I want to specifically mention the excellent service at every level in the resort. From the people at the reception, through housekeeping, the waiters at the restaurants to the people from the beach bar.

So let me first start by saying this is not a 5 star hotel, but a very large 4 star. 5 stars we have recently stayed in are the shard, emirates palace and the Atlantis and this hotel is nowhere comparable to them. Negatives first, the majority of the lobby staff (not the bellboy/girls) but checking in staff are pretty miserable with Olga being the exception. |We had 2 rooms that were infinity pool rooms, again nothing special and if we didnt have the luxury of our pool, I would be pretty disappointed by the room. The TV was pretty woeful for English speakers and the YouTube option didnt work in our room so we never really bothered watching TV,. The prices of the food were scandalous for the quality, believe me we will pay for good food however we are a family of 6 and we literally had lunch twice, once by the pool and once by the beach and both were over£200 for what were essentially snacks to tide us over until dinner, this was with no alcohol at all, I don’t really mind paying if it was great quality but it is just mediocre hotel food. The hotel is literally in the middle of nowhere, nothing outside and no infrastructure, such as pavements to walk to anyway, so you are trapped paying the hotel prices. You can get a taxi to Gialova €80 round trip as we needed 2 taxis were you can get wonderful food with lovely beach views for at least half of the price. Do not bother with Pylos as Gialova has better quality, restaurants. Another option is the free shuttle that the hotel runs to the marina by the W hotel which has some good little restaurants and shops all in one place again quite a lot cheaper than the hotel. |The resort is huge, but doesn’t need to be as you just find yourself wandering needlessly around, they do provide a buggy service for those that need it. The water park is good when you find it, as if staying in the Romanos it is quite a distance, although I would say it was really only for young kids. |Breakfast was disappointing, a lot of food but it was just okay, the usual toaster machine that takes an age for it to go around and still not toasted after 3 cycles. The last two days 3 of our children didn’t even bother coming to breakfast with us!!!|As our children were older we stayed around the Eleon pool which was lovely, however there are I think 20 double lounges and by our last day we were there by 8:45 and we took 2 of the last few available lounges for the 6 of us, we watched over the week people coming down earlier and earlier leaving a towel and an open book or bottle of complimentary water and then not coming back until around midday, whilst people coming after breakfast had nowhere to sit, it’s 2pm now and a lady has just came down to the lounger she put a towel on around 9:30am. The staff at this pool (which I will get onto) are far too busy to monitor these beds but I do think the hotel does need some sort of system as the sunbed policy does not work, maybe coloured labels denoting say 10am put on beds with towels on and then a different colour one for 11am and if the 10 am one is still there move the towels. |The Spa has a booking system on the Costa Navarino app whereby we booked available time slots for manicures and pedicures only to receive a phone call 10minutes later saying none of these times were available, so pretty useless booking system. Just like the Japanese restaurant we were never able to book a slot for the 6 of us either, other than one night an hour before it closed!! Other restaurants also had absolutely no time slots available at all through the app. Costs of excursions were an absolute laugh, sunset picnic at the beach €110 per person, cooking lesson in a village €75 per person, 5 1/2 hour Olympia tour €1080 which is a knockdown price as the actual app price was€4608. I actually had a little fun adding 6 participants to everything to have a laugh at the total cost. The hotel just made me feel slightly ripped off sometimes, every taxi driver we spoke to agreed about the prices tourists are charged in the hotel. ||Positives The Eleon pool is lovely, it had a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere but what stands out here is the staff, every single member of staff at the Eleon pool is a credit to this hotel, they are kept busy all day, and all day they smile and are polite and friendly even though some of the holiday makers treat them like their own personal butlers. These pool staff need a pay rise as you need to keep them. We never went to any other pool so can not say the same about the other staff. all housekeeping staff were also great and the place was absolutely spotless. The two young ladies in the lounge in the evening were also a credit to the hotel, they were both very friendly and always with a smile. On our last night we decided to stay in and as it was only 7pm we ordered some pizzas and various other meals from Da Luigi, everyone of us loved it, it was hot, fresh and so tasty. Would I stay here again? No but I wouldn’t stay in Costa Navarino again until it had a lot more infrastructure. Would I recommend the hotel, truthfully no, for the price we paid it was not worth it at all, maybe because our children are older now, we were all if I am being honest pretty bored and it became a chore every night to get ready, taxi/shuttle just to get something decent to eat, I also gauge a 5 star by its sunbeds and when I am having to get up early to get one, that to me is not 5 star. I do need to note though that the family pool did seem to always have sunbeds and there was plenty of sunbeds on the beach but they need to make more effort in the over 12 category.

Great place, stuff, location and rooms. |Together with Westin next door it's likely the 2 of top 5 hotels in Greece.|Staff is out of this world as are the amenities. |Romanos is a bit less kids focuses than Westin and a bit more couples focused, but the restaurants and bars are great. |Super highly recommended.

Just finished a one week trip here with the family before moving on to try another of their hotels in the area. We had a huge suite with private 15 metre pool which was wonderful to have. The villa came with a private concierge service and Tassos and Vasiliki were always on hand very quickly to deal with issues. We did seem over run with ants laying on the sun loungers outside I kept having to flick them off of me and then we ended with several in the room and needing pest control. ||The beach is nice, not spectacular but the beach service is non existent. Meant to start at 11.00 and some days 11.30/45 without apology and needs improvement. However the life guards are very good at their job. ||Good choice of restaurants here and areas for the kids. Food is generally quite good also. We struggled a little here for food for our gluten/dairy free daughter and packed her lots of snacks too. Breakfast service was pretty terrible also. ||Things like corn tortillas, corn tacos gluten free pasta, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, rice cakes were mostly a miss here except for the Italian restaurant. In modern times there’s really so many options available also. They aren’t quite up to date with modern times with the Matcha yet they’re using a brand that’s bitter not CEREMONIAL. If I’d have known there was a frother in the room I’d have packed my matcha and co! ||Do seem to be plagued with wasps whenever eating outside so we opted for inside wherever possible and ended up with a horrendous amount of mosquito bites (didn’t happen at the next hotel) so perhaps there’s a pest problem to be addressed.||Fabulous to have access to reformer machines but any gym classes happen in the evening which I found strange, no morning classes was a disappointment and often we would be getting ready for dinner so I couldn’t go. ||Turned out this was the more expensive of the two hotels we had booked but other than the room and concierge the rest of the trip didn’t quite match the same level of quality.

While still staying here we are fully enjoying the beautiful lay out and friendly staff. |Staying in a Master infinity villa and now moving to an Ambassador villa there is nothing more you could wish for. Great butler service, lots of things to do and very easy to get in the relax mode. Stayed before during covid at the Westin part which we liked as well but this is a slightly more luxurious experience.|If there would be anything then it would be about minor unimportant issues like a missing remote, lots of ants and that the priority use of pavillions is a useless amenitie (it s still just on a first come base and nothing like upfront reservations, so if you are too late you are too late..). O, and maybe free sunscreen units around the pool would be a nice touch (as we have seen at the likes of Mandarin, One and Only, FS etc).|But let’s not drift from what this resort is, a fabulous place to stay for anyone where the staff gives you a great holiday feel.
