Disappointed by Service and Hygiene Standards Despite a Promising First Impression
I'm only writing this review after several unsuccessful attempts to contact a manager since July 10th. I visited The Rook on July 9th for a happy hour meetup, and while the restaurant initially impressed me with its clean, crisp aesthetic both outside and inside the overall experience was deeply disappointing.
We chose The Rook after researching restaurants in Manayunk and were optimistic based on the menu and atmosphere. Upon arrival, we sat at the bar, which only had a few other patrons at the time. Unfortunately, the bartender's behavior quickly became a concern. She seemed disengaged with us but warmly interacted with someone she appeared to know personally. I tried to brush off the dismissiveness, assuming it was generational differences in service approach but what followed was unacceptable.
While chatting with her acquaintance, the bartender inexplicably began stretching behind the bar, placing her gray and orange sneaker directly on a stainless steel surface used for drink preparation. She then continued to stretch in a lunge-like position, her shoe repeatedly making contact with the food prep surface. We were stunned. She later wiped the same area with a cloth while still stretching and used that same cloth to clean other bar surfaces.
When she finally approached our end of the bar, I asked why she had her foot on a food prep surface. She brushed it off, claiming it was "the wall." When I clarified it was the stainless steel counter, not the wall, she dismissively responded, "If it bothers you, I'll stop," and walked away using the same cloth again to wipe other surfaces.
Beyond the hygiene concerns, the food was less then subpar. The burger seemed to be a thin low quality patty; lettuce, tomato and mayo were all a dollar extra. The chicken strips were overcooked with burn tips, dry and not just lacking taste but tasteless, and too hard to eat. The fries were good. The drinks were well-made, but another major issue was the smell near the restrooms. As we approached the far end of the bar, there was a noticeable old urine or latrine odor, and even a faint smell of raw sewage. It was incredibly off-putting.
I had hoped to speak with a manager directly before posting this publicly, but since I never received a call back despite leaving a message, I feel compelled to share this experience.
To summarize:
* Poor service and dismissive attitude from the bartender
* Alarming lack of hygiene behind the bar
* Strong, unpleasant odors near the restroom area
* Underwhelming food
* The only positives were the decor, French fries and the drinks
Unfortunately, despite its attractive appearance, I can't recommend The Rook based on this experience.
