How Filipino Adobo Became a Southeast Alaska Staple | Eater

"A sister cafe to a downtown restaurant that turns Filipino flavors into approachable comfort food, most notably an adobo loco moco: a hamburger patty topped with caramelized onions and a lacy fried egg, set on rice and bathed in a faintly sweet, peppery adobo sauce that’s just thick enough to coat a spoon." - Jennifer Fergesen

The 14 Best Restaurants in Juneau, Alaska | Eater

"A favorite breakfast and lunch spot in downtown Juneau with excellent espresso, the Rookery Cafe offers breakfast bowls, fresh baked pastries, salads, sandwiches, and a very nice burger. Good bets on the menu: the adobo loco-moco and very outrageous toast specials, including ingredients like caramelized corn flakes and sweetened condensed milk. It’s a friendly place to bring kids and there’s some communal dining." - Julia O'Malley

Google
Lovely cafe serving breakfast and lunch. Service is friendly and smooth, even when there is a long line it moves quickly. Highly recommend the fried chicken burger, it’s delicious! Excellent pastry selection too. The tots are a MUST - best tots I’ve ever had!

Google
Great local eatery that is our go to when in Juneau. Excellent baked goods including a sticky bun that is heavenly. Good Stumptown coffee and consistently good specials. I love the poached egg over veggies but sandwiches are also great. Service is good even during busy times and the place has a more authentic Juneau character than options near cruise docks.

Thomas Boyd

Google
Awesome local eatery for breakfast or lunch options. Cereal killer toast and bendano were outstanding flavor crushers. Glad we stopped in on our visit to Juneau

Google
It's coffee-shop-sized but with a very robust food menu. Order at the counter, and they bring it to your table. The service is really excellent; they clearly aim to please. I had breakfast three times and lunch twice -- everything was just really delicious. I've certainly never had avocado toast like theirs before and it was DEE-VINE. The S'mores Cruffin was mighty tasty but I would probably ask to have it heated up next time. The pulled pork was perfect. Because the cafe is smallish, it was pretty crowded at times, and thus loud, which can take away from the atmosphere. But you can't go wrong with the food. Highly recommend this place!

Anthony Smith

Google
Popular counter-service restaurant offering fresh baked pastries, breakfast, and lunch. Try twice baked almond croissant or blueberry croissant bar. Coffee is excellent as well.

Google
First time here and the food was good! Ordered the loco moco and French toast. Very delicious I'd recommend. The "syrup" for the French toast was different, cinnamon flavored was good. Hubby usually does not finish the meal, but he ate every last bite. Loco moco was very flavorful and a big portion I could not eat it all.

Google
Cute spot with great food. I had a simple lunch, the rookery BLT, but others in my party had different plates. They all enjoyed their meals. We got cookies to enjoy later and they were lovely, "homemade" style. We will be back.

Google
Stopped in for breakfast before starting our day and this place was great! They had a big selection of breakfast items and coffee - too many delicious options to choose from. I ordered a bbq potato hash bowl that had pulled pork and tasty bbq sauce and everyone else ordered typical breakfast items. They place was pretty crowded so it was a little tricky to find a table for the 4 of us to sit down. Luckily something came open once we ordered up at the counter but depending on what time you end up going, you might have a hard time finding a place to sit. The food comes out fairly quick so the tables are turned at a decent rate. Easily one of the best places in Juneau to grab a good breakfast!

Yelp
Best little cafe in Juneau - love stopping in for a cappuccino and spinach feta pastry to start the day off right. You also may run into the local artist who created the mural over the barista counter!

Yelp
I ordered to-go. The Cereal Killer French Toast was decent. I would not order again, it was not bad but would recommend to others. I give this dish a B. The Patatas Bravas was okay as well. The Kelp Chili Crisp ($16) that I purchased came in handy to add some oomph to the potatoes. I give this dish a B. The restaurant did not leave a strong impression on me, but I would suggest that others give it a try. The staff was friendly and informative.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot in downtown Juneau. Good coffee with hearty breakfast options and pastries. I had the salmon benedict with a side of lox and it was delicious and very filling. The side of potatoes had a wonderfully flavored seasoning on them and they were crispy, just the way I like them. Friendly staff and the dining area was clean. I really appreciated the large communal table in the center that makes dining solo more enjoyable.

Yelp
I made sure to give this establishment multiple tries before writing a review. On the visit where I ordered the chicken... this took an hour to receive the food when I was the only customer. The eggs on all visits were second from being cooked. Unfortunately every time I had uncooked whites but not much. The chicken was overcooked and fried in burnt old oil. The only thing you could taste on the chicken was burnt skin and not a hint of seasoning. The ham was perfectly cooked one time and over the next. This is the run of the mill thin cut ham. There was no seasoning to anything and even my coffee had a bitter taste due to the grind. Normally I could see past this but the coffee was also watery in flavor. All of these issues added to eating in a poorly lit area just adds to the depression of this business. Do I recommend... only if you are starving. Your best shot is the pastries if you do go. The pastries are sub par and slightly overcooked on the bottom. Also, if you are taking food to go they provide forks but no knife for the ham.

Yelp
Very good latte!! I liked the vibe of the shop, food looked good but we were here for coffee!

Yelp
i love a good pastry (esp the spinach feta pastry) and they have a variety, including breakfast and lunch and fried chicken) the menu looked very interesting and there's a lot of seating as well. i'd love to come back soon!

Yelp
While on my week long trip to Juneau, I think I ate breakfast here almost everyday. The coffee is outstanding, but that doesn't overshadow the food. Every dish is reasonably priced and delicious. I can't rave enough about the avocado toast with a poached egg! This is a must-eat establishment in Juneau.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice coffee shop. It's the place to go to when you're downtown! Great coffee selection and wonderful atmosphere. Only wish is for a few more food options but everything we had was great!!! A must go to when in town.
google avatar

Leigh H.

Yelp
The coffee is great (strong to my like). The bakery items are trendy and fun. It is a 10-min walk from the cruise ship stop so you get away from the crowd a bit. The staff is friendly and the service is quick! I actually came back the next day and got another cup of coffee :)

Yelp
Great cafe with a cozy atmosphere and excellent food and coffee! We visited Juneau in August and came here for breakfast every day during our 3-day visit. They were out of avocado for the first two days, but I was able to get avocado toast with lox on my last day! The smoked salmon was the best I've ever had. Tip: It was super packed each day around 9-10am, with very little seats left, so maybe head there earlier...

Yelp
The food and pastries are always amazingly delicious! The staff are friendly & the atmosphere in the restaurant is enjoyable. A favorite breakfast & lunch spot downtown Juneau.

Yelp
JUNEAU, AK / CONTEMPORARY CAFE / 10-14-22 / BREAKFAST +One of the few places open at 7:00 A.M. where they serve food, in downtown Juneau. +The breakfast options are fresh and unique. +The coffee is brewed nicely. +Customer service is great.

Yelp
The food is really good -- plate-lickable. The chai was blah. They don't sweeten it by default, but really there was very little flavor at all. In fact it tasted almost like an espresso latte, and yes I asked and they didn't make a mistake on the order. For reference, I am not looking for a super-sweet drink like most places make a chai latte. My ideal is the authentic Indian chai, which is not very sweet but has wonderful spices, especially cardamom. You can surprise me with a unique variant of that, but please have some flavor that tells me you aren't just a coffee substitute. The place has a cool vibe and seems very popular. It's right in the middle of downtown Juneau. I would come back for the food, but get my chai elsewhere.

Yelp
Lovely latte art and hallucinogenic mushrooms on the wall. Good pastries and friendly service. Lots of seating.

Yelp
Consistently stellar breakfast in Juneau's cute downtown. Quality coffee (Stumptown), tasty pastries, and many hearty and very well prepared breakfast options. After first visiting last year, I recommended The Rookery to colleagues also here for a meeting this week. Nearly all 15 of us visited at some point during our stay, some for repeat visits (I went twice for breakfast and once just for iced chai)! Service is efficient: sometimes friendly, sometimes just right to the point. Start your day here and then go for a nice waterfront stroll, shop at locally owned boutiques, or hike, you'll be glad that you did.

Yelp
Great food and good coffee. The French toast and the cinnamon roll are fantastic. Cute interior. Nice staff.

Nancy E.

Yelp
Great coffee, staff and Nutella croissant - light and flakey! Please is impeccably tidy and artwork makes it even more interesting than your having coffee with friends! Food presentaiom beautiful!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, although a bit greasy. Like the tots. Relatively fast. Nice decor; a blend of old world (wooden wainscoting) and modern (local rotating art for sale on walls).
google avatar

Stacy S.

Yelp
I wanted to eat everything in the bakery case. Avocado toast and tea, plus two crossaints (one ham and cheese, the other goat cheese and pear) plus a danish... all were delicious, full of flavor and perfectly baked. I appreciate their tea selection as well! Thanks for the compostable to go containers... if only Juneau had composting facilities.

Yelp
We've been here everyday for breakfast even though our hotel has a healthy breakfast included in our stay. My friend loves this place & it looks like the locals do as well. It's consistently busy at breakfast time. The blueberry scones are fluffy & not too sweet with plenty of blueberries. Coffee drinks are excellent, just the aroma is enticing. I love the lox here, perfect texture, not too wet & gooey, has a salmon taste, oddly some lox just taste salty, this is served in bite size curls, no need to cut. I think I'll go over and get another breakfast today.

Yelp
What's not to like. The rookery has fabulous breakfast, good coffee and style. Eggs were perfect. Service was friendly and fast. If we're ever back in Juneau we'll be eating there.

Pat R.

Yelp
Great coffee, outrageously good food, wonderful staff, laid back vibe. One of my favorite places to eat in Juneau.

Dan C.

Yelp
Service was friendly and relatively quick. The Food was yummy. The ambiance was homey with local artists work on display/sale which is awesome. Nice high ceilings, bright natural light, and was airy on a warm June day. I will be back! Thank you Rookery!

Josh S.

Yelp
Just ate here. Service was great and the food was phenomenal. I had the rookery blt, my wife had the ham and cheese. Both were absolutely delightful. And with the cruise/tourist rush I'm surprised they could do such a great job!! Would definitely eat here again. Thanks!!

Edward B.

Yelp
Food was ok.... definitely not top diner in Juneau. Hard to park as it is downtown. Better after tourist season.
google avatar

Aurelie A.

Yelp
Had my first burger at the rookery the other day and it was super delicious! Had eggplant on it lol never had that combo before along with some thick cut bacon! Service is always great. Restaurant is super cute. Love it here.
google avatar

Mackenzie B.

Yelp
Ordered food to go this morning and my Red hot chicken sandwich was burnt to a crisp. Wasn't even enjoyable. Best part about the meal we're the tots... Pretty disappointed.

Melinda M.

Yelp
Good coffee, tea, always packed! Haven't yet tried to food but hope to. Cute location

Kathleen W.

Yelp
Great atmosphere - bustling but not overwhelming. The staff was lovely. And the mixed berry muffin was the best I've had - ever.
google avatar

Yelp
Great find: opens at 9 and is full breakfast fare (not just coffeeshop pastries, which they also have). The croissants are buttery perfection (though the apple/goat cheese was light on filling). The ginger cookie is chewy and perfectly spiced. The potato bowls were good, but "spiced" doesn't mean spicy (and actually the potatoes weren't all that seasoned either). Would try the pulled pork bowl next time, but the standard egg, potato, bacon, avocado bowl was satisfying. The Eggs Benebang is insane: fried chicken instead of the English muffin, so chicken, ham, egg and sauce. Stumptown coffee is delish. Beware that there are no free refills! And they leave room for cream and stirring, so if you really want a full 12oz of drop coffee, you might order up a size. The space is super cool too. They were slammed between 9-10a before anything else really opens, but seemed to always have tables to fit. We had speedy and happy service. Would totally put this on the reco list for visitors!

Yelp
nice little cafe in Juneau with Michelin Star quality food. The folks at the register area seem like owners. the server who brought our order had pride and a huge smile. this is a winner! best avocado toast i have ever had. delicate, crispy and delicious!
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Delicious spot for breakfast and so kind to vegans! They were able to make a special dish for me with the tater tots (don't miss them), avocado, and spice blend. Everyone is so friendly and it's a cute spot. Just be aware you might wait in line quite awhile especially when cruise ships are there & they aren't open on Sundays!
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
This place is amazing. My husband and I got the eggs Benedict, the cinnamon roll, the brioche berries pastry and coffees. The eggs Benedict was AMAZING. Too often the ham will come warmed, but now here. It was nicely browned and crispy. It came with perfectly poached eggs. My one complaint about the food is that the hollandaise sauce was cold. Somehow the cinnamon roll was the best cinnamon roll I've ever eaten. Don't expect world class service though. People were formally polite at all but certainly not genuinely welcoming. But I imagine they get a lot of locals and cruise ship tourists so I'm sure they are warm if you're a local.

Yelp
Ate at Rookery for breakfast. I got the potato, spinach, tomato with two poached eggs. Daughter got the Eggs Benedict. The potatoes in my dish were well-seasoned and delicious by themselves. Unfortunately, when I busted my eggs open and mixed them in with everything else, it buried the unique potatoes flavor. That's on me. The hollandaise sauce on Eggs Benedict was definitely scarce. Avocado with dish was a nice touch. Overall we enjoyed the breakfast. Not perfect but a good place we would try again.

TXSebas T.

Yelp
Downtown Juneau on a Saturday, best bet for breakfast. Very casual and pretty friendly . Had the fried chicken Benedict.

Meghan M.

Yelp
Delicious and satisfying breakfast - the poached eggs were absolute perfection. Friendly service and a fun atmosphere.

Yelp
Hi. I came here for a casual breakfast. Nice homey spot in dowtown. I ordered an avocado toast and it was YUM! the bread was soft and fresh, basil, and it had seeds or something sprinkled on it. It was better than your average avocado toast. I also got a "mystery bag" for $5. I figure I'll snack on this later. Got a croissant, muffin and Danish. How perfect. This is a great spot. Will be back when I'm in juneau.
google avatar

JR R.

Yelp
Everything is good, ambiance is an old coffee diner. Got our food fast and everything in our order was accurate. I'd definitely recommend getting any of the pastries.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Definitely the best breakfast join in Juneau! Make sure to check the hours so you don't miss out (they're closed on Sundays). The eggs Benedict was loaded!!!! Basically a whole avocado and several slices of ham - I could only eat half :) also probably the best flavored latte I've ever had. You get assigned a table after you order which helps crowding. Only proposed suggestion for improvement would be to have a 3rd person working to help mitigate the seating and clearing of tables as well as running food.
google avatar

Carmen G.

Yelp
No frills, just good food. I ordered the supreme avocado toast and it was delicious. The Rookery has poached eggs on lock. My boyfriend ordered the patatas bravas which were also delicious. He ordered an americano but the order somehow got confused and he ended up with a "shot in the dark". An espresso shot in drip coffee. Need I say more? Worth the stop if you're in Juneau!
google avatar

Riechilda F.

Yelp
The owners- father and daughter are super nice! The coffee - sugar free vanilla latte is great( comparable to Starbucks) and the scones and cinnamon buns are great. They are busy but they are very efficient.
google avatar

Sky V.

Yelp
Omelet was fantastic and so were the breakfast potatoes. Best coffee we've found since we've been in Juneau and the service was friendly every time we've been in there which is every day.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Best sticky bun I've ever had. Coffee very good. Very pleasant employees. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
Terrific bar on a busy street corner in Juneau. Large selection of mixed drinks and they only have Alaskan liquor or beer. There r fire pits all over the small bar and a great taco food truck that serves fantastic fish tacos. Service is friendly, food is great, and they have really good music. Loved this place.

Jeannine H.

Yelp
Best latte in Juneau They use Stumptown Coffee and have milk alternatives. Owner was really friendly, he talked us into coming back for an evening taco pop up. The tacos were amazing! Local father and son team making their own family recipes. Best I've ever had Try the El Pastor with the pineapple. Tacos are Fri-Sunday.
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
So happy I found this place on Yelp. The latte was fantastic and the benedang - as reported on the other reviews is perfect! Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Don't miss this breakfast in Juneau!
google avatar

Kurt P.

Yelp
Great little place for a nice breakfast and beautifully prepared coffee beverage. Breakfast for four here this morning. I had the two egg breakfast which was plenty big enough to keep me full until noon. The potatoes were excellent, but too much for me to finish. The toast was perfect. The expression beverages were beautifully prepared with a nice design on top. Prices were reasonable and service was friendly. Best breakfast we've had in Juneau.
google avatar

Dana K.

Yelp
Pleasant employees and great food! Cute "joke in the wall." You know it must be good when you need to wait for a table. Our taxi dropped us off at a place where there were no customers at all. That was not a good sign. Thank goodness a few people directed us here.

Yasha L.

Yelp
Pretty darn good. Lots of options for pastries and grab and goes, but ordering from the kitchen is where it's at. Very loud and busy, but made to order food is always tasty.
