Firstly I must say this is a pub located quite away from any stations, so much so I'd definitely say this is a local place. When I say locals it's not local as in tacky or run down, it's actually very very cosy inside; think turned down lights, small pub, nice layout of circular bar, wooden panels and moody lighting. It's unexpected to see but not if you know Kentish Town.
I had ventured here after walking for about a good 15 mins to meet friends as I had heard the pub had a pop up residency that I had wanted to check out. What goes well with boost beer Thursday's readying me for the weekend? Well why Chicken of course. Of the deep fried variety. I will miles for it.
The pop up was from Coqfighter. It consisted of Chicken. In fact we ordered the whole menu. LOTS of Korean 'Kim-Jong' wings (16 I think!), chicken burgers, veggie burger, wasabi slaw, chipotle fries, normal fries with a side of pork belly & duck bao buns which we couldn't resist. Loving the touch of artistry to slather that Sticky Napalm sauce too by using paintbrushes.
Coqfighter is defintely one to check out in regards to them as a food pop up. Really good moist chicken. We spoke to the guys after and they were lovely to chat to as well, and found that they will be at the new Boxpark in Croydon sometime in summer. Until then they are here at Rose & Crown for the next few months I think.
With the pub they had some good craft beer for us to wash down all that food (cos we North London posh off course). Partizan beer on tap was £6.20...amazing beer but yikes! Brooklyn about £5.20 and some Beaverton similar.
I loved that they have the now seemingly popular board games stacked in a corner for anyone to play. I do love that option in pubs like this. Staff more than friendly, but I was very disappointed that my friends daughter who was quite young couldn't stick around. Maybe a licence law so understandable but would have loved to have not splitting group as no one was being bothered and it meant her husband having to go home with daughter.
Apart from that it's a very discreet pub to find but definitely one to kick back after a hard days work with your loved one or chill with friends. There is even a comedy night downstairs which I was surprised about. One to watch out for.
