We've been coming down to Laguna Beach for many years, and have seen this place go through many iterations/owners. This most recent redo was supposed to try to recapture the vision of original owners Francis Cabang and Harold Hanna circa 1947. The remodel is very nice in terms of tiki décor, but the food was just okay and service is spotty.
The restaurant is full of nice tiki touches. The bar area is a bit smaller and darker than before because they expanded the outdoor area, even adding sidewalk tables. There's also a small patio inside with a fountain.
When I went, the bar area was busier than the dining area. I had a reservation at 4 pm, but there was no host at the outdoor stand, so I had to ask a server inside and she said just to sit anywhere. The menu had brunch items served until 3 pm and an all-day section of pupu's, salads, mains and grilled items. The cocktail menu is pretty extensive with both "original" and "modern" selections. My Hurricane was nice, set aflame tableside. I started with the pupu platter, 4 pupu's of your choice. I got the mochiko chicken, lumpia eggroll, coconut shrimp and Spam musubi. Everything was decent, but not exceptional. My main was the curry pineapple fried rice, served in a pineapple. It had Portuguese sausage and shrimp, quite tasty. I had a side of Hawaiian mac salad which also had potatoes and was more vinegary than I like.
Service was on the slow side, although friendly, and they seemed to be short staffed. It seems more staff came on duty around 5 pm. The kicker was the stall in the men's room was out of order, I had to scurry into the ladies room when it was unoccupied.
Far from an exceptional experience but I may give it another try when I'm down, since I can easily walk here.
