"Oakland County’s oldest brewery resides in downtown Royal Oak. Here on 4th Street, beer fans can sip classics off the menu like the Suicide Blonde. Patio seating is available as is carryout." - Eater Staff

"After five years in Royal Oak, the Roak Brewing is preparing to let go of its taproom, brewing facility, and equipment on East Lincoln, Crain’s reports. The move is part of an effort by the company to consolidate operations after acquiring Dark Horse Brewing Co. in Marshall last year. That merger wrapped up in February just as the pandemic was hitting Michigan, resulting in financial challenges for the company. Roak will continue brewing Dark Horse and Roak beers from one facility in Marshall. CEO John Leon tells Crain’s he’s in talks with local brewers to take over the space, and hopes to eventually reopen a Roak taproom elsewhere in the city." - Brenna Houck

My latest stop (#27) in the Metro Detroit Brewery Discovery Tour. Having just eaten across the parking lot, I didn't have any food here but the sandwiches looked quite good. I'm just here for the beer. A nice place, welcoming if loud. Turn the tunes down a bit, eh? Several TVs ring the place, all showing golf at the moment. Lots of low-top tables with goodly amounts of room around them. There are 4 6-seat high-tops and the bar for those who want their tush more elevated. And there is a spacious patio/biergarten, as well. Mallory was very nice and attentive despite the place filling up with hungry folks as dinner approached. The beer is quite good, especially the Suicide Blonde.

Google
Amazing experience. They did not have any more shepherd’s pie left but the food still came out AMAZING. We got the loaded pepperoni pizza and a patty melt with fries. Everything was cooked to perfection even the fries and ranch. We got the shandy to drink (home brewed) and it was smoother than Leinenkugels.

Google
Food was good but small portions for prices. The Nashville chicken sandwich although good was a bit disappointing. Smaller bun w/ Very skinny piece of chicken (as if a smashed thin burger) and lots of breading to give appearance of a thicker sandwich. Would not rate it’ as one of the best Nashville chicken sandwich. Not recommended unless you like a thin breaded piece of chicken. Wait staff was very friendly.

Royal Oak Brewery is a perfect example of a community watering hole! Friendly service, nice patio, good beer, quality food, and amazing service. I am a mug club member and every time I go there I am frequently checked on for refills and food. Always a great experience at Oakland county’s oldest brewpub!

Never will I eat or go here again. The food was honestly the worst I've ever eaten. You'd think a wood oven pizza and nachos would be easy and worth it. Nope, nachos were basic, and i paid $5 extra for chicken. If there was a quarter cup of chunked chicken, im exaggerating. The pizza was horrible. Burnt, greasy, non melted cheese. Hubby ate it because we paid for it, and we were hungry. Service was horrible, place was dirty. Bathroom floors were sticky....grosss! Either new management or iwners dont care. Just shovel in the money. It is a beer garden after all... probably dont come here for the food, which is a good idea! Picture tells it all. Royal oak is very cool, with waaaay better restaurants.

Google
Service and food was ok. Neither was exceptional. I was disappointed that I was charged for sour cream when I told the server that I was unhappy with the way my food was prepared and if I added sour cream I would be able to eat it. I figured I wouldn't be charged because it was better than sending the dish back. The cheesecake was delicious! To management, I would say that you lost a star from the review and a future customer over a side of sour cream! 😒

Google
Beer selection isn't that large, as they only seem to serve their own beers. However, they do have liquor as well. The Reuben sandwich was decent. The onion rings and beer cheese soup were amazing!

Google
Nice atmosphere, friendly service and really great brews...But even the lovely Biergarten doesn't make up for the disgusting glass my drink was served in. Unfortunately, I drank most of it before I discovered the filth on the bottom. The Server and a Manager were both apologetic and seemed genuinely concerned but that's one of those things that you can't undo. Am grossed out and not likely to return.

Yelp
Most places I go regularly just have one or two dishes I really like. They have so many! They make the most authentic Maurice Salad in Michigan since Macy's closed their restaurants. The Country Grilled Cheese is another favorite, but I have never had a bad dish. The bar tenders and servers are all truly nice and helpful. Even with a crazy crowd they never lose their smiles. And it's the best place to watch the Manchester City matches with my fellow blues.

Lisa W.

Yelp
Amazing service!! Amazing beer!! I love the patio. The food is really good!! Hey the wings and the Maurice salad.

Yelp
We were in Royal Oak visiting a loved one at rhe hospital and chose to grab some dinner before heading back to the other side of town. Beer sounded like a good idea so we came to visit Royal Oak Brewery because it is a stop on our Craftapped app - Getting our bogo 50% off beers was a breeze. We each ordered something different. I got the Ruben without sauerkraut because I was feeling corned beef. I wouldn't order it again, it was less corned beef than represented on their online menu pics, all balled up on one side to make it look like a bigger sandwich when cut/displayed. The bread was SO toasted it was basically a crouton. The fries were very good though! My siblings got the cheesesteak and the Cuban. I don't believe they had any complaints. The beer we got was good, I tried several, but only really wanted one of them because they were all too malty for my liking. I really think you should have a couple more hop forward menu items available even in the winter months to satisfy all customers. The option given to me by our attentive server was a cider... little sweet for my tastes, so I just stuck with the Kolsch. Little light, but was a good beer. Overall, would be back. The vibe inside is very chill.

Yelp
Solid, been here for years and will last. They put out quality. It's good food, beer and just a good time. My burger the juicy Lucy, with cheese and double patties patties, was a pretty big fat tasty burger, can't complain. Just an overall good time. Parking can be tricky but try the little lot right next to it. So yeah check it out it's a solid choice in Royal oak that has a lot to offer.

Allie D.

Yelp
This place rules. The bartender (Bryan) is the best! Super friendly- it felt like he knew us as soon as we walked in. Beer and food were also great! Also really great atmosphere. 12/10

Yelp
The best thing about The ROB is the people. Everyone here is awesome and friendly. The food is the second best thing here, for the price, I can't get a more fulfilling meal anywhere else, especially at any other breweries. My personal favorite thing about The ROB is Kolshing Hour. It's just a nice hangout outside and very cheap kolsh with specialty food options for the special day.

Nancy H.

Yelp
I have actually been her twice in the last 2 weeks . I was outside on the patio one time and indoors the other. The service was actiuallly better indoors, but it was loud and hard to hear. The food was excellent as "bar food" goes. We tried a nice selection of appetizers including Nachos, Pretzels. Quesadillas and Mediterranean Pizza. It was ALL good. I dont drink beer, but managed a great cocktail on both nights. I REALLY like the fact. that there. is convenient parking close by too!

Beth R.

Yelp
Service was terrific, food delicious, really was the perfect place for a birthday party for a regular "Grub"

Katie D.

Yelp
I ordered the Cuban sandwich and seasoned fries that were on special and it was delicious!

Yelp
Went to catch up with a friend and the service was excellent. It took us a while to order dinner since we were talking for a while and the server was patient and kept checking in until we were ready. The food unfortunately was pretty mediocre at best. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich was smashed and all I could taste was hot sauce and was very greasy. I wish the chicken was better breaded and crispy. The Reuben sandwich was also pretty greasy and bland. The beers were pretty good had the red and kolsch but the food was disappointing. Might go back for drinks or appetizers but not sure for dinner.

Dustin T.

Yelp
Nearly all the staff is great, there's a diverse beer list, and solid food choices. That's why I'm a mug club member here. Get the Kolsch!

Jordan B.

Yelp
We had the Corned beef Reuben, apple turnover but the Absolute star of the night was the Juicy Lucy Burger! We are definitely coming back here just for that Burger, yum!

Dave W.

Yelp
Excellent service. Always a good vibe. Got the house salad and traditional wings. Never disappoint. Pride IPA. Call that a Wednesday.

Mark C.

Yelp
Walked or driven by this place the last 2 years. Finally made it a point to stop in. Nice seating area very clean. The service was fantastic. Very good beer selection. I enjoyed the three different ones I tried Northern Kolsch, Royal Oak Red and 4th Street Wheat. All three very smooth and fresh tasting. The Kolsch was my favorite. I had the House burger and fries. The burger was cooked exactly the way I wanted. The fries were very good. The pickle on the side was crisp. Good place to go on a Sunday and watch football.

Gary K.

Yelp
Food is good. Love the Black and White Dip! However, if you sit at the bar you will get terrible service unless you are a regular. We noticed all the regulars getting served consistently while we kept waiting for a server to help us. Took forever to place our food order. Next time I will sit at a table where the servers were just standing around waiting for tables.

Priya K.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Thursday evening for dinner and a wings game. They had replays of golf and a no-name bowl game on, but didn't have the red wings or Michigan basketball on. We asked them to change one of the tv's, which they begrudgingly did. The place wasn't too busy, and I doubt anyone was watching the reruns of a 2-year old golf tournament. We wanted to start with a round of beers. They were out of half the beers, but the flight was ok. The Flanders red ale was so terrible. Left a horrible taste, but our server was nice enough to exchange it which was much appreciated. Their fryer was down apparently so the fish tacos were served grilled instead. They were pretty good, but not what we came for. Didn't hit the craving. The Lucy burger was one of the most mediocre burgers I've ever had. The bun was so flat and looked like a wonder bread type quality. Meat was definitely overcooked and a little dry. Ordered it with cheddar instead of American, but it came with American anyway. Overall the taste was ok after adding ketchup and mustard, but it as a very mid level burger. The fries were crispy but luke warm. The jerk chicken sandwich was probably the best entree. The chicken was tender and the jerk flavor was good. Fries were not hot, but did the trick. Overall a 4-5/10. Probably won't be back.

Claire S.

Yelp
I just love everything about this place. The food is ALWAYS delicious. A good selection of beer and cider, as well as a full bar. Plenty of TVs with any sport in you could hope for. Lots of seating. Sometimes a bit of a wait or takes a while for food to come out but I don't mind that here!

Kerri M.

Yelp
This place is great! Cozy atmosphere, attentive service, portions and price are a bargain. The happy hour prices can't be beat!!!! It was busy with holiday get togethers but our server was on top of everything and a delight - GIRL DINNER did not disappoint!!!

Brendan S.

Yelp
First time here and loved it. Our server Laura was excellent and very attentive. The beer is great, I highly recommend mixing the Red ale with the Blood orange IPA. Overall this place is a fun atmosphere for both dinner and drinks, and fairly priced for the area.

Jody K.

Yelp
We went to the Royal Oak Brewery at 6:00 on a Saturday night and were seated right away. We appreciated that the whole staff was wearing masks. I started to get an iced tea, but the server said she was told it wasn't good, so I just had water. I truly appreciated her honesty; I hate bad iced tea. I ordered the hangover burger. The sauce had a little kick to it, but I liked it. (I generally don't like anything spicy.) The seasoned fries were good, but a little under cooked for my taste. I will take care of that when I reheat the leftovers. (The burger was so big that I only ate half of it.) My sister had a veggie pizza. She liked it, but there wasn't enough sauce for her taste. I would have liked it just fine as it was. My nephew had a spicy chicken sandwich and enjoyed it, but he did need a bit of water to take care of some of the spicyness, as his beer (served in a very cool glass!) does nothing to cut that. My nephew's girlfriend had the beef stroganoff and she liked it as well. It didn't look like the sauce was very creamy, but she said it was fine. She got a beer that she liked and said that it reminded her of grapefruit. I tasted the apple cheesecake. I thought it was a kind of strange flavor, but the caramel sauce it was served with was really good. All in all, I like this restaurant and will certainly consider it again when we are in the area.

Yelp
A reliable place for casual food and drinks. I usually go for the suicide blonde and soft pretzels with cheese! I've walked in with small and large groups, and have been able to find seating each time easily. The parking situation isn't my favorite - I wish they had a lot instead of just street parking because those spots get packed relatively fast on the weekend.

Arturo F.

Yelp
This place is reliably average, and that's okay. It's the place my friends and I end up at when everywhere else has a wait. It's huge, and the beer and food are fairly priced, though unremarkable. I do like their patio, especially since they added the overhead space heaters. I wish they had a better TV setup so it was a better option to watch games (I probably would've given it 4 stars if that was the case).

Ivy A.

Yelp
Great service and food. Casual, friendly place. They celebrated 28 years last night & we enjoyed both the live entertainment and fare. Hubby had a delicious burger with onion rings and I ordered the Maurice Salad which was awesome however we started with a filling wings appetizer so I ended up taking the salad home.

Sharon M.

Yelp
One of the best places in Royal Oak for an amazing burger. Food is great, Atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is AWESOME. Mary and Laura are the best! They always go above and beyond.

Devon M.

Yelp
Laura is SO sweet!!!! She's such a good server and incredibly personable. Shes the reason my family & I have an incredible experience!

Matt C.

Yelp
Mary is best! Jeremy's beers are extraordinary. The food is delicious. Love the September Special - Korean BBQ Nachos!!!

Carrie M.

Yelp
Had a work lunch & our waitress Mary was great! with 15+ people, everyone's food & drink orders were correct & cashing out went very smoothly as well. Good food, good drinks & great staff!

Bettina P.

Yelp
Great food, service and atmosphere Kolsching hour is amazing....owners and people that work there are outstanding...especially Laura and Mallory

Shelby Lyn D.

Yelp
Laura was an amazing server! Friendly, and efficient. Food and drink was amazing. Drunk selection and food options were perfect. Can't wait to come again!

Patrick S.

Yelp
Foods just alright, nachos with melted cheese and beans nearly made me puke. I ordered a simple cheeseburger with lettuce, nothing more nothing less. Took around 40 minutes to arrive, wasn't even busy. Guy got my order wrong, put literally everything on it. Food came back and they forgot the lettuce. Burgee ended up tasting like charcoal anyways, had fries for dinner. Plate was dusty snd gross. Place feels terrible, 10/10 wouldn't recommend.

Lisa S.

Yelp
The Royal Oak Brewery is one of my favorite local spots. We've gotten a lot of takeout from here over the last year. You can easily order online or make a quick call to place your order. The brewery accepts Royal Oak Downtown Dollars. The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with seasoned fries is by far my favorite item on the menu. It has the perfect amount of heat. I like to get some ranch on the side to go with it. We tried the Jerk Chicken sandwich too. It was great, but the Nashville is the clear winner in this house. The shepherd's pie tastes like mom's home cooking. It's the perfect comfort food! Please continue to support your local businesses!

Karen H.

Yelp
The food here was surprisingly good! Tried the mac&cheese, beef stroganoff, and pizza. Every staff member we talked to was really nice and attentive, too. We had a small problem with one of the checks (we had a large party, so it's understandable) and it was handled promptly. Mallory was awesome!

Ebenezer's Anni L.

Yelp
Our Meetup group came for an early dinner after the zoo walk since it had outside dinning. I got there after some but a few later. The server let me order a diet Coke while I looked over the menu. Lots for choices but I narrowed it down to beef stroganoff and their version of the maurice salad. I thought the beef stroganoff had won out but the server came out to tell me the chief told her that they ran out!!!! WTF, it was only 4:00 in the afternoon and being a brewery I bet they close much, much later. So it was the maurice salad. While I waited the leader of our group shared the pretzels and beer cheese appetizer, which I thought about. It was delicious. I wish I could say the same for the salad. I have eaten Maurice salad in at least 6 places and this one was average at the best and bottom of the list at the worst. Didn't take part of home if that tells you something. Made me wonder what the beef stroganoff would have tasted like. The service was what you expect from a brewery pub. It had diet Coke. Others who had a drink enjoyed it. Since I do come in the area for work, I might try it again or I might not.

Suzzette M.

Yelp
The last few times we have been here to eat, I've gotten the nashville hot chicken sandwich. It is some of the best, and hottest, nashville hot chicken I've had outside of Nashville!!! It is SOOO good!!! I only check the menu to see if they still have it, and don't bother looking at anything else. Last night we tried the fried Shishito peppers app and it was great! Generous portion for the price too!

Chad L.

Yelp
Interesting beer creations, good pub food to match. Standard family dining/pub environment. Thanks to server Mallory.

CJ M.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a business lunch and both parties had the fish and chips. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. On the bread heavy side, but filled with flavor. The seasoned fries were great and I would highly suggest! I will be back in near future for a birthday party and I am looking forward to another great experience and service. **Average Iced Tea - First glass had a beer flavor that was not appreciated.

Jon M.

Yelp
Laura was great! Really hardworking and cared a lot about our service. Food and beer were good, too! Reuben and loaded pepperoni pizza were great!

Erik B.

Yelp
Fantastic beer, great service, great food. Love this place! Best bar in RO. Love it. Great bar.

Scott K.

Yelp
The food and service is always amazing here. I had Mallory as a server and as always she did an amazing job as she has for years. It's telling when they are able to keep staff around for as many years as theirs tend to.

Amy W.

Yelp
We used to go to Red Fox to watch the games, but that is now Pinkey's so after researching he found out that the games are on at RO brewery. They reserve an area for chelsea fans! Pre pandemic these games are super fun and tons of fans come out. Singing and yelling. It was a bit more quiet now. I'm sure it will get back to the craziness. Super fun time. I wasn't drinking but I'm told the beer is really good. I really liked the atmosphere! It's bif and spaced out so social distancing isn't an issue. We split the nachos which were delicious. A bit on the pricy side. $13 for nachos and another $4 for chicken. There were a lot of toppings though and they used real cheese not the liquid kind (eww). No tagabrews but they do accept the hop pass so the beer is discounted. We will definitely be back!

Brooke J.

Yelp
Thank you for the service Mallory. We truly appreciate it and also keeping up on everything the entire time. Food, drinks, and vibe we're all awesome!

Conny H.

Yelp
Food and drinks are great! Mallory is the best server ever! Highly recommended place to go.

Stephi C.

Yelp
Great food and awesome service. Erin was super nice to everyone that walked in the bar. In town for a visit but will absolutely be back!

Leah H.

Yelp
Mary was our server - incredibly attentive and awesome! Food was great! We ordered the fish & chips and the Brussels sprouts salad with chicken. Good quality was great, atmosphere is open and fun, and the service is simply perfect.

Anthony B.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night for dinner. Food was standard brewery food, with the exception of the shepherds pie which is very good. If you like shepherds pie, you'll love it here. We also had the chicken Parmesan sandwich, the chicken was very small compared to the bun. Service was kinda bad, I hate to say it.

Brian C.

Yelp
Had dinner and drinks on the back patio last Tuesday to enjoy the last few days of summer weather. Exceptional service and food quality in a relaxing atmosphere. If your looking for a chill spot I'd definitely recommend this brewery.

Kathy G.

Yelp
Mary always gives us great service and greets us on our visits. We love the burgers at Royal Oak Brewery and if you love chili, this is the place to go.

Kevz S.

Yelp
Great service, horrible nachos 45 min wait despite not busy for an undercooked order of nachos with small portions of meat, etc. I will never go back

Jon F.

Yelp
So after a lousy experience at the Rock, we went in here hoping to grab a quick bite before the comedy show. We found two seats at the bar, sat, and our busy bartender got to us. I had the Scotch beer which was served in a brandy glass and my girlfriend a long island. Neither disappointed, and the scotch beer was strong - thoroughly enjoyed sipping it. We ordered the mediterranean pizza and added chicken - let me tell you, this was a good pizza, with all the earmarks of a wood fired pizza - great dough, crispy at points, bit of flop as portnoy would say. I was doubtful about having ingredients like feta cheese on it but it worked...really good pizza. The added chicken was a smart move. The place was busy but the staff was attentive and it was all very good, and we were able to both relax and be out of there when we needed to be. We'll be back!
