The Best Pub Grub in London | Scotch Eggs, Sausage Rolls and Chip Butty | Eater London

"Chef Dan Doherty was always poised to open a decent boozer. The pub, happily airy and welcoming, opened in 2018 and the chef has steered proceedings towards modernity without pretence. There are dishes such as burrata with peas, mint, and pistachio — delicate, precise cooking but not exactly classic pub grub — but it’s all the better for it: they work well alongside the stars of the show, which are jauntier plates like ‘nduja scotch eggs and fried merguez sausage in filo pastry. The cheese toastie, with Lord of the Rings-like shards of cheddar, parmesan, and mozzarella, sums up the pub perfectly: the apparent pursuit of total happiness. Also, look out for the ever-changing sandwiches. Sometimes there are crisps inside." - Josh Barrie

I can’t fault this place. The best pub I’ve ever been to. It’s got a fun, bubbly and family friendly vibe to it, with a classic homely pub feel. They’ve got a great selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The food is really delicious. The scotch eggs were some of the most wonderful morsels of food I’ve had, and the Sunday roast had the most finger licking vegetables ever. There probably could be some more meat with the Sunday roast, but otherwise, a really great place to visit.

Stopped by this nice little bar for a quick drink. Cozy atmosphere and a good selection of drinks. Great spot to relax for a bit—would definitely come back!

We were seated and served on Friday night 17:30-ish with no reservations. Hummus plate was outstanding as was fish and chips. Patrick (our host and server) was superb in seating us promptly as well with his recommendation on sparkling wine question. I would highly recommend if in the neighborhood.

Had a going away dinner here for a colleague leaving for a new opportunity. Food was fantastic and the service was good. We had a fantastic waitress taking care of us. The only complaint I have is the atmosphere and how loud it was while we were there. It was difficult to talk at times from all the ambient noise of everyone in the pub. If you don’t mind the noise more power to you.

Amazing food, I had the ham hock (comes with chips and a gravy too). However, I found it really hard to hear my friend talking to me across the table. The sounds just seem to bounce around the room which amplifies the noise. Good atmosphere in general though

I chose this place because I was starving and it was near the hotel, but also the most crowded looking, classic London place in the area. Lots of locals outside and inside was bustling, all smiling and happy! They greeted me right away and I sat by the window in a bar type seat. Very nice. Great menu. Great beer and huge selection! So glad I went here.

Was in town for an NFL game this past Sunday. The Royal Oak is Walking distance from Marlyebone Station, and my hotel. Decided to have dinner here because I didn’t go to a traditional British pub my last two visits to London, and this place exceeded my expectations. Great selection of contemporary beers like NEIPAs and traditional English Bitters. First time having a scotch egg and it was delicious and the burger can compete with your favorite gastropub back in the states. Service was excellent, was seated immediately and the rotating servers were attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. Highly recommend for anyone foreigners looking for a great pub experience

We had our wedding reception in the upstairs Dining room. From the first time I contacted the pub and visited to have a look round Tom and the team couldn’t do enough for us. The atmosphere is that of an old school boozer with superb service and delicious food. All of our guests were seriously impressed and we will definitely be making this a regular spot for other special events or just a cocktail when we are in town. Couldn’t have asked for better! Thank you to all the team

Yelp
Was in this part of London looking for a unique pub/dining experience and I don't think i could've done better than the Royal Oak. Great local/craft beer selection, interesting and creative menu options with excellent preparation. Friendly service and a very "neighborhood" feel. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Cute and bright pub-- my friends and I chose it because we were in search of a Sunday Roast for dinner, and this was one of the only places nearby that still had it. It was pretty busy, so we definitely got lucky. I got the chicken roast. The chicken was delicious- not dry at all and paired so well with the potatoes and gravy that it comes with. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Yorkshire pudding, but it was also my first Yorkshire pudding, so can take that with a grain of salt. I just thought it was slightly on the dry side and scraped at my palate. Thoroughly enjoyed it overall, though, and would recommend to any other tourists who are searching for a sunday roast at night!

Yelp
Very nice pub stumbled upon whilst walking in the neighborhood. 4.5 stars Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Cost to worth it rating: 3 Opentableable: yes Return worthiness: yes Highlights: - Atmosphere: one of nicest pubs I've been to. Clean, open feel to it. - Service: waitress was cheery and timed out starters and mains for a friend coming to meet us - Scotch eggs: could tell was made in house. Eggs cooked just right with a jammy texture and the sausage had a bit of a kick with the addition of chorizo. 4 stars - Sandwich: Turkey, cranberry, and pigs in the blanket all inside a warm panini style sandwich. Unique and tasty. 4 stars Cider: one of the better ones I had with a nice balance of crispness and only a hint of sweetness. - Dog friendly: my friend's dog wasn't sunny allowed in but welcomed with water and biscuits Midlights: - Sandwich didn't come with chips and they looked so good regretted not ordering them. Lowlights: - Desserts sounded grand but was too full to order any Loved this delightful lunch and would come back intentionally next time.

Yelp
Beating the crowds on a weekday afternoon means a good meal in a convenient spot, away from the crowds except the neighborhood crowds partaking in food and revelry. Lunch sandwich choices offer diversity without overwhelming. The pork was tasty along with the Parmesan truffle chips. Yes I got the truffle but it could have been stronger. Mains are nice here as well, and you should head on over before it gets too busy. Otherwise squeeze in during the packed times and have some fun.

Yelp
The clay pot rice is so nice! The rice is with aroma. I like the beef ball which includes aged organs peel and mati.

Yelp
In town for a few days, just popped in for a few pints with my better half and had a lovely few rounds pre / post the 5 o' clock crowd, nice selection, engaging staff, and good price. Would be happy to return when back this way -

Yelp
recently visited this pub on my first trip to london with my family and loved it. we ended up going twice, the first time i ordered the chickpeas and the second i ordered the burger (both were very scrumptious). everything about it was great, the vibes, the food, the drinks, and both of the servers we had were some of the prettiest men i've ever seen

Yelp
I was going to give them 3 stars since it can sometimes be very quiet. However I'm giving them an extra star for effort. It seems they try and build audiences on different nights (beer & mussels night on Wednesdays, for example). And they have reasonably priced tequila alongside a decent variety of Scotches. While raised on tequila shots (at least from ages 18-25), I've since learned a good tequila is best enjoyed sipped. If you don't feel like filling up with beer, then sipping a small glass of good agave juice is a nice alternative. Heck, they might want to try Taco Night. I'll bring the salsa.

Yelp
i'm in london for the first time this week and this pub is near the flat i'm staying at. my family and i tried it near the beginning of the week and loved it. came a second time tonight and had the same experience. it was a little busier but it still wasn't loud. i got a burger both times btw and it was delectable. food was great, service was great (servers were cute asf (if you work on wednesday nights and have a dark brown mullet and a nose ring - call me)), vibes were great. no complaints. :)

Yelp
Great spot for a pint with outdoor seating and a cozy feel inside. Definitely a local's haunt but in a good way.

Yelp
Went for lunch - it was really bad. Mc Frozen chips, tasteless and boring food, probably frozen before - but expensive prices. There are better places to eat.

Yelp
Went here for Xmas lunch with ten friends. The landlord I think his name was Glyn was very accommodating and the food was fantastic. Great little spot.

Yelp
Good variety of beers and OK pub food. They do Sunday roast. My kids used to lobby to go to the "burger pub" on the weekend. It is only kid friendly during the day, however. We were asked to leave when we showed up for food on a Saturday evening. We haven't been back since.
