Salty Monk

"Set in an old 16C salt house, this long-standing, proudly run restaurant is a pleasant blend of the old and the new – and is the type of place that’s always evolving. Dine in either the Abbots Den or the Garden Room, and choose 3 small plates for starters, followed by a flavour-packed, classically based main course. Alternatively, come for coffee and cake or afternoon tea. Bedrooms have good extras and there’s a gym and hot tub in the garden." - Michelin Inspector

We absolutely loved our stay at the Salty Monk. The whole experience was completely top notch. Annette and Andy were the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. The food they create is first class and we greatly enjoyed every meal.

We stayed here for a Saturday night and were made to feel really welcome by pur hosts Annette and Andy. The room was well equipped and the bed and bedding were extremely comfortable and of a high quality. The garden courtyard and dining room are charming. We enjoyed a delicious hand picked breakfast prepared by Andy. Lovely

Booked a table in the restaurant for a celebration dinner and had a wonderful evening. The food was excellent, the staff were attentive, friendly and clearly it's a close-knit, happy team. Chef takes great care to produce high quality, thought through dishes and each one was beautifully presented. Thank you so much for making our dinner a special memory

Stayed at the Salty Monk end of May for a night on the way to Cornwall with our little dog, from the start to finish the service was impeccable, I’m not that easy to impress I’m happy to pay good money and expect good service for it, but…. This was a bit different, room was lovely, even down to the fresh milk, nice biscuits, the doggy bits. Our dog is a little anxious (loves a bark/scream/talk to herself when around other dogs) so eating is a bit tricky, I asked if we could have a meal in our room!! Well……. With the lightest of touches, the most perfect of service we had a 3 course meal, and I just have to say the food was beautiful, a stunning bottle of wine (Lebanese) and all in the comfort and safety for our little dog in our room. Breakfast was also on trays in our room served with perfection. In this day and age it it a pleasure to stay/eat somewhere that every aspect of the service, politeness, conversation, room, food, check out, check in, drinks at the bar, car parking, garden and all the little tiny touches what are not required but make great turn to exceptional. Thank you for such an enjoyable stay, and secretly I hope people don’t book so I always get a room when I want to come back but I want you to be fully booked as you deserve to be!!

Booked dinner here for our anniversary - did not disappoint! Wonderful fresh, made to order menu options courtesy of the clearly very experienced & passionate chef. Excellent and very friendly host. We will be back & will bring friends with us - we are very hard to please so view this as a complete endorsement! If you are reading this just get a table booked!!!

We stayed in the Heather Suite for one night last week whilst visiting relatives in the area.||The owners, Annette and Andy, were really friendly and helpful and the room was extremely comfortable and homely. The Salty Monk is atmospheric and traditional in style and both dinner and breakfast were absolutely superb.||We had our Golden Retriever with us and we found the accommodation truly dog friendly. The Heather Suite was great because it had its own little gated patio, which our dog loved. He could even say hello to the owners’ dogs through the fence!||We visit Sidmouth every year to see family and will definitely return to the Salty Monk next year, hopefully for a slightly longer stay. Definitely recommended.

Perfect, family-run Restaurant with Rooms. Wide range of breakfast choice, each item of the best quality and beautifully prepared. Fantastic dinners too, and being able to easily retire to your room after a sumptuous repast is such a treat. Been coming for years, never disappointed.

We had a lovely – but shorter than planned - stay at the Salty Monk. We had a charming room, Rose, comfortable bed, delicious breakfast, and when these people say dog friendly they mean it! Water and food dish supplied, with a mat, and a towel, and dog treats! Oh, and they had lovely treats for people too – those crunchy biscuits were delicious – thank you!

Ok, I escaped here with my girlfriend for a romantic weekend away, and got a suite as advertised with a jacuzzi. First of all don't be fooled by the photo above, the place is right beside a busy main road, so no chance of opening a window without loads of noise, and with no aircon that's an issue. Next up the jacuzzi didn't actually work which changed it from a romantic getaway to a very expensive seaside b&b. Finally breakfast is charged at exorbitant prices: we ended up paying around £30 for a couple of croissants and a slice of toast, on top of £150 for a room. I expect that in a top London hotel, not a Devon village that is not even that close to the beach (10 minute drive) One star, for taking the mickey.
