The Sauer Kraut Grill Opens in Richmond With Classic German Dishes - Eater Houston

"The Sauer Kraut Grill, a former food truck known for its decadent German dishes, has officially debuted a permanent location in Richmond. The former roving eatery has set down roots at 734 Crabb River Road in Richmond, bringing a new destination for schnitzel and currywurst to the neighborhood. After a “soft opening” earlier this month to work out the kinks, the Sauer Kraut Grill is now open for lunch and dinner service, though it’s still hiring staff to get the restaurant up and running at full speed. In addition to German classics like schnitzel, spaetzle, and bratwursts, diners will also find Texas-style burgers and “schruben” sandwiches on the menu at the Sauer Kraut Grill. On the side, options like spicy fries slathered in mayo and curry sauce are on offer, along with salty fried pretzels. Closed on Sunday and Monday, the Sauer Kraut Grill is now open for lunch service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner service from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the doors are open all day long from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Amy McCarthy

The food here is excellent. The German Red Cabbage had a nice sweetness to it. The pan fried potatoes were delicious and the sausages were cooked just right. Each of the three types had a unique flavor. I sampled the potato soup and it had a nice buttery flavor to it. I think there was some parsley as well which added a a nice touch. I’m not sure what other ingredients were included but if I go back, I’ll definitely order the soup. This is about as close to real German food as you can get. It’s worth the drive. The prices are very reasonable and the service was excellent.

Google
Overall I am very impressed. Good German food qualify prices. I almost call this Texas German fusion cooking. I ordered the currywurst, very good and I liked it but not in love with it. The red cabbage though stole the show. Best I have ever had, semi sweet and just amazing. The strudel was good but my style. Overall I am impressed and will be back. Good food, good service and very reasonable prices. What is not to love?

Google
Excellent food. German themed offerings but the hamburgers are 8oz and are the juiciest and best I’ve ever had. Their Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel is a fabulous dessert. It’s a little hard to get to due to road construction on Crabb River and no street signage yet but it’s worth the hunt! Owner is a great guy and aims to please.

Google
We had a very nice lunch. We split a Schruben, Classic Pork Schnitzel, and Spicy Curry Fries. The Schnitzel was excellent, but I really loved the Schruben with the buttery toasted bread. We were warned that fries were spicy, but I found them almost sweet? Still, they were delicious. . A little pricey for a casual lunch (think: food truck prices), but we'll definitely be back.

Google
Excellent German influenced food. This place used to be a food truck, and they opened this location January 2020. They offer burgers, brats, potato soup, snitzle, and great sides. We had the Texan Burger, original brat, curry fries, cheese sprackle, ans sauerkraut. The burgers were cooked perfectly and very juicy. The Texan burger has cheese and fresh Jalapenos and I recommend it. My friend had the Original Brat, which is served in a fresh bun with spicy mustard and sauerkraut, and it is was delicious. The spicy curry fries are drenched in curry sauce and tangy mayonnaise, these were very good and the portions are plenty big enough to share. We also had a side of the homemade sauerkraut with bacon bits. This must be a family recipe passed down for generations, and is a taste of german food at its best. The pasta cheese spatzle (I think thats the right name) was good, but felt it could have used a little more zest in the flavor. The staff was extremely friendly and the owner sees to it his patrons are taken care of. They serve beer and wine, so this is a great place to enjoy an adult beverage and have great food at the same time. They seem to have a good following as they have only been open a few weeks, but they are already hoping with plenty of customers. Great food, excellent service, very fast and friendly. Give this place a try, you will definitely be glad you did.

Google
Wow, stellar and unique restaurant. The lunch special is an incredible value. We had the German pulled pork w/ spicy slaw and Schruben lunch specials. Bring an empty stomach you are going to need it. Have been to a few German restaurants around Houston and generally left disappointed, this alternatively was a real treat.

Google
I don’t eat here often enough but I should. The food is always spot on and delicious, what goes good with that is their ice cold beer. If you haven’t tried this hidden gem you better give it a shot. By the way I love sauerkraut and they have the very best!

Google
Quaint place. Small but full of German life. I got lucky because they had a band passing. Small mom and pop group. Very good. The food was great and I will return!! They also have a food truck that hits the breweries. Nothing better than beer and German food. They have seating inside and out. It took all that I had to eat my fried German bologna sandwich. So good. I Berlusconi you will enjoy a well.

Yelp
Love the food here! Always fresh and consistent. Plus they treat you like family. I always tell my friends about Sauer Kraut

Yelp
I have to say this place at first was very promising. I love German food and I am a huge fan of bratwurst and I order the cheese stuffed bratwurst with the house made sauerkraut. When I started eating the food it had a weird aftertaste, but I thought it was the spices in the sausage. It was terribly mistaken. About 2 hours later I was having severe stomach pain and gastrointestinal issues for 2 days. I will not be back and suggest others stay away. Also I was reading the other comments and noticed the owner of the restaurant attacking other patrons who had issues here instead of asking for more details to help him improve his restaurant. Very unprofessional! Update: The owner is now calling me names. I highly recommend everyone stay away from the establishment.

Yelp
Why 5 stars? Because this perfectly hit the spot at the German Heritage Festival. --- --- --- At the German Heritage Festival, there were approximately 4,000 food options, and I was very indecisive about which one to choose. But I had a plan. I went on Yelp and searched for German food trucks in all of Houston. The Sauer Kraut Food Truck popped up as, by far, having the best ratings/reviews. I then went to their Facebook page, and as I expected, their most recent post was that they were at the Tomball German Heritage Festival. I assumed that any German food trucks in Houston would be and was glad I turned out to be right. Earlier in the day, I walked past the truck and was definitely intrigued when I saw it say something on the side like, "German food with a Texas twist". But I had no idea that they had such good reviews when I initially saw that. We ended up ordering a jager schnitzel sandwich and a currywurst. Both were about as great as one could have hoped for. And while we did not love our overall experience at this festival, The Sauer Kraut Food Truck was the highlight for us. We will definitely stop here again if we see them out and about in the future.

Yelp
We happened to be in the area and of heard such good things about this place. It was around 3pm on a Saturday, so not that busy. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and looked like a great beer selection but we had the rugrat so we didn't partake this time. Cheeseburger highly recommended by the rugrat burger snob! My jaeger schnitzel sandwich was fresh and super tasty, and my husband enjoyed his curry wurst. I don't really like sauerkraut but theirs is delicious! Do yourself a favor and stop by!

Yelp
GREAT PLACE TO EAT! Very friendly staff!!! Can't Wait to go back! Eric is the man!! Go and see him!
google avatar

JoAnn M.

Yelp
Brought a Czech friend in for lunch today. She had the Brat, and I had the classic schnitzel sandwich. Everything was tasty, fresh, hot, and yummy. I finished my leftovers for dinner, and the schnitzel held up well. The food is good, and the owner is really nice

Yelp
Wonderful food and very kind people! The ambiance was fun and matched the food perfectly! We got two different burgers and the fries were amazing!! We also got the sausage platter and it was super good! The sauerkraut was of course delicious!! I wish we had gotten pictures but the food was eaten as soon as it was placed down!
google avatar

Tori R.

Yelp
I love this place, food is great! although it's a German style restaurant... best hamburgers ever! I usually go to their brick and mortar spot but if you run up on this food truck definitely try it!
google avatar

TaShane O.

Yelp
Eric and his crew are great. They provide great quality food and excellent customer service, all for an affordable price. When you see this food truck around definitely give them a try. Great food and locally owned!
google avatar

Paula S.

Yelp
Food is Fantastic!! Great service and good prices. We have to share a meal because the portions are so big.

Steve T.

Yelp
I wish I took a picture. Their beef/pork brat is probably the BEST I have ever had. The roll was amazing, delicious kraut, mustard, and brat. The fries were also nice done. It is absolutely worth every penny! You must try this. And they have a place in Richmond as well!
google avatar

Zac C.

Yelp
Shruben is THE best hot sandwhich you can find. The curry sauce is so good you can drink it.

Yelp
So Delicious!! Don't miss out on their pretzel !! Everything is delicious. Owner is super nice ! They have done a party for us on-site and they were fantastic !
google avatar

Jeffndonna M.

Yelp
This is a must!! Everything from authentic German food to the burgers! You can't miss here! They sell German beer and have the coolest atmosphere
google avatar

Marty S.

Yelp
I heard great things about the food here and BOY was the news absolutely right! Great tasting food here folks! The burgers were the best I'd ever had anywhere! Honestly! We are giant foodies folks and I can't say enough about how delicious the food is here!

Chelsie K.

Yelp
I was craving a grilled chicken sandwich and was blown away by Sauerkraut Grill! Must try!
google avatar

Melissa O.

Yelp
Yummy! First time at the restaurant. We usually order from the food truck. Burgers and Brats were delish and large portions. The ambiance is great with Pictures of Germany and German music playing in the background.
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
The establishment is clean and well lit. The staff was nice. The menu had a variety of choices. I settled on the bologna sandwich. First thing you noticed is the thick 1 in massive piece of bologna between 2 pieces of bread with lettuce and tomatoes. This is definitely NOT your regular bologna sandwich. The bread was soft but had a slight chew to it. The sandwich held together well. The bologna was juicy and flavorful. Overall an excellent sandwich! A hidden gem for the folks of Richmond and Sugarland.
google avatar

Macie A.

Yelp
Best food truck burgers ever. Really. Worth the wait. Fries are good too. Honestly haven't tried anything else and don't really care to because then I would miss out on the burger.
google avatar

Darlene P.

Yelp
Just had lunch the this place! It was amazing!!! Had the "Schreuben". Definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. They have a nice selection of German beers too! Will not hesitate to eat there again!
google avatar

Paige B.

Yelp
Bad food and cheap place all around. Overpriced. My husband and son got sick off their bratwurst. My kids wouldn't even eat the burgers.
google avatar

Brent B.

Yelp
Great good and great service. This is a hidden gem of a restaurant and a food truck.

M C.

Yelp
Drove all the way from cypress for some schnitzel and was really hoping I hadn't wasted my time. Beyond pleasantly surprised! Best I've had in Houston area hands down. Even though the place has counter service the sweet girl working the register brought our food to the table and checked up on us often to see if we needed anything. The schnitzel was on point and red cabbage absolutely delicious. Only downside was that it seemed like they may just switch to only burgers?? I sure hope not as I'd make the hour drive a few times a month for that German plate. Sooooo soooo good!

Yelp
So...the description states that it's a food truck (and that would be true), but it's also a physical restaurant as well. This was my first restaurant outing since COVID-19. My experience was wonderful. The menu is limited as was the hours of operation, and that is to be expected. The owner made suggestions and my hubby and I chose the cheeseburger with fries. I know a German restaurant and I selected the burger...well, upon our arrival, we were informed that they were about to close to sanitize the restaurant, so options were limited. How, I got a German beer and ALL was great. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. We ate outside. Service was quick and our food was served hot and fresh. We'll definitely be going back again. Thank you for a wonderful (first outing) experience.

Yelp
My wife mother is from Germany so sauerkraut food truck had to be tried by my family. I'm not real familiar with German food, but I know great food when I taste it and this food was great!
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
Excellent! Best burgers ever! Jager fries are amazing. We will make this a regular part of our rotation.
google avatar

Ronnie R.

Yelp
Ordered a family pack that was offered on Saturday as well as a couple pretzels and a potato salad. Everything was amazing! Seem less online ordering and pickup, don't even have to leave your car if you don't want to. If I could eat here every day I would! The potato soup is a favorite of my wife and she could eat a gallon of it if they sold it! The owner takes great pride in his craft and it shows

Keith G.

Yelp
My family and I visited here on a Saturday for lunch. I had THE "SCHRUBEN" sandwich and it was delicious and filling. I substituted a soft pretzel for the fries for an additional $2 and that pretzel was delicious. My son enjoyed the cheeseburger and fries. My wife enjoyed the JAEGER SCHNITZEL with CHEESEY SPATZLE and PAN FRY POTATOES. This food is fantastic and I only wish a location would be closer to Missouri City! The whole family loves to eat here. We will return soon!

Yelp
So, so good! Best burger I have had in a long time. My family of 5 ate here tonight and we LOVED it. I ordered the Texas burger which had sautéed fresh jalapeños, Munster cheese and spicy mayonnaise on a sweet Hawaiian bun served with seasoned fries. The fries were perfectly fried and the seasoning was amazing. We also had an order of the (forgetting the name) thick German bologna Sandwhich which I got a bite of and would definitely order for myself. Another member of my family for the Texas Schmitz and was very pleased. Kids had the giant corn dog and were happy campers. All the adults enjoyed the selection of German beers. Aside from the food the staff was very friendly and eager to help. They got us a high chair as soon as we walked in and checked on us numerous times. We will happily return in the future. It's a win win, supporting local and getting a great meal.

Gina G.

Yelp
Great place. Dodd is wonderful! I will definitely go back! Give them a try you won't be disappointed!

Denise H.

Yelp
The pretzel appetizer was salty, soft and delicious. I ordered the schnitzel and really enjoyed it with the red cabbage and potatoes. Tucked away south of 59, I had my doubts about this place but their food made me a fan. I will return.

Yelp
Interesting take on German food. What used to be a food truck is now brick and mortar. Food was overall delicious and felt authentic. Faves across the board was the Jager schnitzel, currywurst and cuke salad. The pulled pork sandwich was good as well, very tender - I guess the spicy slaw gives it a German twist. My little boy loves cheesy spaetzle, and this one lacks seasoning. Also a bummer, they were out of the cheesy brat and it was still early in the evening. The highlight really was the salty pretzel! It was fried perfectly outside and soft and warm on the inside. We liked it so much and ordered 2 more to-go. Soon as we got home and dug in, it was clear that they were over-fried so not the same experience. They were working rather hard in the kitchen with Chef Eric overseeing everything, but needs work on consistency. Another area of improvement is the menu familiarity and food knowledge. Three young men were upfront taking orders and were very service oriented no doubt but their informationwas inconsistent. When I asked for a German beer reco - the first guy pitched my question to another guy, then that guy said he only tried three German beers in his life. Facing a cooler full of authentic German beers, he looked pretty lost. Missed opportunity to highlight how German beer complements the food!! On that note, the young man with glasses seemed to be most knowledgeable. The food obviously speaks for itself but the ability to sell the product makes a huge difference. Lastly, it was shared in other reviews and I agree, it was a bit on the pricey side. I spent $75 on 4 sandwiches, 2 sides, a soda and a beer. I hope they work out the kinks and would visit again.

Yelp
Visited the brick and mortar location that just opened. Very impressed by the quality of the food. Juicy hamburgers in addition to German offerings. Try the Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel-delicious !

Michael P.

Yelp
The food was very tasty, solid menu options! The cheeseburger was delicious...highly recommend.

Gary G.

Yelp
The food is always good here, whether you want a great hamburger or German food. The service at the restaurant is great, the service at their food truck is so it yourself.

Jay M.

Yelp
What can I say? This place.. AWESOME! I selected 6 items at random after browsing the menu. Every single thing tasted great! Not to mention, AWESOME service, and friendly staff. Will definitely be adding to my list of regular go-to spots!

Damon K.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff- Nice and quiet-we will be back. Mark , the Manager came out and said hi

Thomas F.

Yelp
As a German native I can tell this is very close to German food. The sausages, Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, red cabbage ... all delicious.
google avatar

Jenesa V.

Yelp
Every time I visit this place it is great! Service is always top notch & the food is prepared fresh and made to order. My husband says the Texas Burger is the best burger in Texas!! I'm happy with anything I order. I can't recommend this place enough!
google avatar

Leigh M.

Yelp
Jalepeno Burger is simply the best burger around. I love this food truck and it's physically location off Crabb River Road. Owner is passionate about providing high quality food and hiring friendly staff. Highly recommend.

Micah W.

Yelp
Not only was the food great, but the attitude held by the workers was astounding. Even at the end of the day, when everyone was wet and tired (thanks to random rain showers) the workers at the food truck were cheerful and ready to help however they can. I cannot recommend them, or their food, enough.

Zach A.

Yelp
Always known it was the best German food (by far) in town, but now their burgers and seafood are right up there with the best, too. The catfish platter was perfect- perfectly seasoned and breaded and the fries are top notch. Can't recommend this place enough. My kids absolutely love it as well.
google avatar

Lis B.

Yelp
Loved It!! The staff was great and the food even better. We have only had a chance to eat there twice but will definitely be back.
google avatar

Skye T.

Yelp
Authentic German food with a Texas twist, there was nothing NOT to like about this place. I had the schruben, which I heartily recommend. We lived in Germany for a few years and this restaurant is the closest we've gotten to the food we enjoyed in our time there. They also have some German beers and wine for sale, as well as authentic tasting pretzels, which our daughter couldn't get enough of.
google avatar

Zach A.

Yelp
Reviewing the brick and mortar restaurant: it's the best German food in Houston and it's not even close.

Jody R.

Yelp
Love their hamburgers! Service is always good and the food is tasty. Good value for the price!

L E.

Yelp
I visited the Sauer Kraut Grill restaurant and it was amazing! My first impression was the young man taking orders was so very friendly and answered all of my questions about different items on the menu. He seemed very happy to help and offered great customer service! I ordered the Schruben sandwich and fries. The sandwich absolutely blew me away with the different levels of flavors! The pastrami was excellent and I couldn't have asked for a better deli meat. They make their own sauerkraut at the restaurant and I think it was the best I've had! The bread was fresh and the whole sandwich was served very hot and perfect! The restaurant had seating inside and also two picnic tables outside. I cannot wait to return to try some of their sausages and hamburgers! I highly highly recommend this restaurant or their food truck!!!

John T.

Yelp
I have enjoyed everything I've gotten off the truck, but especially in their actual restaurant.
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
We've enjoyed the food truck for years and are thrilled the new brick and mortar Sauer Kraut Grill is open. Our favorites are the Schruben, bratwurst, and amazing cheeseburgers. This is quality, homemade, German food-- not sauerkraut from a can here! The red cabbage, sauerkraut, and cheesy spatzle are amazing! A nice selection of German beers too! This is a relaxing place to enjoy great food.
