Astral Tequila Cocktails in Sacramento | Eater

"This speakeasy-styled venue is a vibe — a Prohibition-era vibe, that is. With its dark and broody interior and live music (jazz, blues, and country) three nights a week, it’s hands down one of the most alluring bars in Midtown. The menu offers up a slew of Southern-style bites, like shrimp po’ boys, fried green tomatoes, and jambalaya croquettes, alongside an array of artful cocktails, including the Astral margarita infused with a healthy dose of prickly pear puree." - Bernadette Machard de Gramont

9 Bars in the Bay Area for Cocktails | Eater

"Publications from around the country have bestowed love on this Sacramento classic, placing it on national best-of lists for years. Inspired by both the roaring ‘20s and Southern cuisine, plates like mushroom Rockefeller and fried green tomatoes sit nicely next to the Lady’s The Bitter End, made with Zacapa Rum, sweet vermouth, ruby port, ginger syrup, cardamom bitters, and cinnamon smoke for a touch of theatrics. Order it on one of the Lady’s live music nights, where the mix of jazz with cocktails makes it feel like New Orleans a century ago." - Robert Spuhler

Travel California: A Complete Guide to Sacramento

"Right off the blue and gold tram lines and between Midtown and Downtown Sacramento is this speakeasy-style bar with live music five nights a week. The bar goes heavy on the Prohibition vibes—flocked wallpaper, velvet sofas, dark leather banquettes, candelabras, pressed-tin ceiling—but although it’s a little kitsch, it works, as do the cocktails. The not-unpleasantly-medicinal Judas is a potent mix of vermouth, rye whiskey, honey, lemon and bitters." - Sophie Friedman

If I'm in Sacramento looking for a bar to have a drink or relax, if I want to chat with a few friends over drinks and yummy snacks, The Shady Lady Saloon is a good choice. It is located in an area with lots of good restaurants and activities at night or on weekends. The bartenders here are very friendly. The Shady Lady Saloon also has nice indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for a couple or a group of friends. Nice bar, nice people here!

Google
It was a WHOLE vibe!!! It's dark and moody with an excellent music selection from the early 90s. Our bartender (& now new BFF) Lindsay took care of us from the moment we walked through the door until we left (many hours later)! Lindsay gave us the BEST drink selections with recipes she came up on the spot! They were incredibly well balanced and had you feeling really NICE!😉👌🏾 ANYTIME we come back to Sac, we will DEFINITELY make a pit stop here!!!

Stopped in before a show. Expected a speakeasy, but it's more faux wild west saloon. Booths like a Black Angus. $28.88 for two cocktails before tip. Asked for a gin fizz. Bartender declined, saying it takes up to 15 minutes to make a fizz drink (empty bar). As I flip through the menu, I see a pisco sour. What takes 15 mins if you have egg whites prepped? Ordered an aviation that tasted like a gimlet. Color was wrong. No creme de violette? Same shade as the French 75, which was served with ice in a rocks glass, oddly. Beers weren't cheaper than Ace of Spades, so ultimately I wished we had gone inside the venue early.

Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: Food was standard fare The extended review... Food: Beignets - 3/5 - Pretty standard fare. Definitely not as airy as they should be. Duck Tots - 3/5 - I was looking for this to have more of the duck flavor in it. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. Ambiance: 4/5 - They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor is definitely more done up and quite interesting. Not quite what I picture a saloon to be but I did like it.

So we went for lunch and it was “so so.” The food looks great and taste, good/okay. I would not encourage their Chicken Fried Steak, it honestly made one in our party sick. The fish and chips was large, fresh and delicious. The service was nice, but forgot everything. I’ll try it again eventually, because did like to see them above 3 stars if possible. It’s a great location and the outdoor dining was very nice.

Google
I come here often since they make the best old fashion drink. Their food is also delicious. The fresh pork skins was perfect! The ambience and the decor is perfect when you just want to have drinks in a mellow environment. Love their Halloween themed decor!! 🎃

Duck tots on a Wednesday night here has been my thing for years now Ever since they started having live music on Wednesdays this place has gone down hill. The music is horrible and the duck tots just don't feel the same in mouth as they used to. I used to love to fill my mouth with hot duck tots all night here but not anymore. Never going back! I can make my own duck tots.

I went with my parents! We really enjoyed ourselves. Food and drinks were lovely and the air conditioning was FANTASTIC! Didn't feel the heat from outside at all. Our waitress was a sweetheart who rushed out to give us my Mom's seat cushion we forgot.

Yelp
Super fun place with live music and amazing Agave Fresca (non-alcoholic mocktail that used Seedlip's Notas de Agave) and it's one of the best NA beverage I've had! I'd come back just for this! My boyfriend got the penicillin (recommended by bartender) but he did not like it-- he said it tasted like medicine . He preferred my drink, too. The live band was singing some classic hits and people were dancing and singing along! It was busy on Saturday night, and the bartenders did their best to keep up! Great place to hang out in Sacramento!

Yelp
Came here on a night out with my friend and I was surprised I hadn't been here before! We came on a Saturday night and there was live music (and good music), lots of people enjoying the performance, and a great intimate atmosphere. The inside has dimmed lights, beautiful decor, and a good amount of booth, bar, and table seating. There is also outdoor seating but it is a bit limited. It was very busy the night we came but the bartender was nice and served my friend quick. The energy of this place on a weekend night was great and I'll have to come back to spend more time and try their various drinks and foods.

Yelp
Very wonderful spot. I was so happy a friend recommended this spot. I got myself a cosmopolitan and it was delicious. The ambiance was wonderful. There was live music, tons of people, and great drinks. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a good place to sit and enjoy a good drink. The service was great too. Bartender was quick to help me and make my drink.

Yelp
I like The Shady Lady and it's a solid spot in Downtown Sacramento. The speakeasy vibe is always fun, and I usually come here for a martini and fries. Their martinis are strong and well-made, and the fries are always hot and crispy, which is exactly what I want when I come here. Even on a busy Friday or Saturday night, the staff is nice and quick to turn drinks around, which I appreciate. It's not one of my top favorite places in Sac, but it's consistently good and worth stopping in for drinks and a quick bite if you're in the area. The atmosphere is dark and moody, perfect if you're looking for that classic cocktail bar feel.

Yelp
A friend took me for my birthday in October. Was a cute little spot with nice decor giving festive Halloween vibes. Chicken sandwich was really good. Drinks were good aswell. Street parking so beware of that.

Yelp
The Shady Lady is a great place to enjoy a cocktail with some friends. We love the ambience inside the place. We have our favorite appetizer which is the Duck Fats Tots. The flavor is great. The cocktails are hard to choose since they have so many on the menu. There were four of us and it was not too busy but service was a bit slow. One person asked if the bartender could make a drink that used to be on the menu but were told they stick to what's on the menu because there are newer staff who may not have been around previously. The food and cocktails were good and enjoyed the experience.

Yelp
Someone else said it, but it's true, this is a sac town staple. It's right on R which is a nice area with a ton of other options, but you should stop here. They have fun, unique drinks and great food! I got their Caesar salad which is huge! I added steak and it was nice and tender. You could definitely share this with a big group. The service is always great, even when they're busy. Always recommend this place when I have friends come into town! Also a great space to stop before going to a concert at Ace of Spades!

Yelp
We came to The Shady Lady Saloon last night for some dinner before a concert. I've been to The Shady Lady for drinks, but never the food so I was excited to finally check it out! We ordered the Pulled Pork Corn Crepes, Duck Confit Tots, Jambalaya Croquettes and the Shrimp Po Boy Sliders. I was a big of the Shrimp Po Boy Sliders (and the fries that came with them), but everything else was okay - I liked different things from each dish, but nothing wowed me. If you like heat though, definitely check out the Jambalaya Croquettes! So spicy! The decor at The Shady Lady is also what makes it unique! With the paintings, red sofa and mood lighting - it's definitely a vibe! It's a great place to have a drink - I recommend the Red Daisy especially if you like tequila! Our server was great and worked his butt off even though it got very busy towards the end. We appreciated that our glasses were never empty! The have a brunch menu that I will definitely be checking out very soon!

Yelp
Always a fun time! Last night my friend and I shared fries, Brussels sprouts, and fried green tomatoes and had a few drinks. The food was great, drinks were delicious, and the team was friendly and helpful. What a great Tuesday outing!
google avatar

Yelp
Put together a last minute happy hour for a colleague who retired and the bartenders were incredibly helpful and proactive. They helped me order food in advance for the group, made suggestions for timing, took care of the group once we were all there. They really sprang into action to make it a lovely gathering to celebrate my awesome colleague.

Yelp
Wow! First time coming here and fell in love with this spot. The Thursday music is incredible, with jazz, reggae and latin inspo and the interior design is to die for. Every bit of design is well thought out I caught myself staring at every wall and corner. Nice and spacious but still super intimate. Drinks were delicious and not too expensive ($13/$14) !! Would come here all the time

Yelp
These guys were cool and made me a good sazerac also pretty sure there was a wizard there to place seemed magical.

Yelp
Always great drinks and I adore the atmosphere . I can't wait to return. I haven't tried the food yet.

Yelp
Love this place! Four of us went for a round of drinks during a Sacramento pub crawl. The server was so friendly and fun! She helped us choose the perfect cocktails and then gave us great recommendations for the rest of our crawl. I love the look of this place! Swanky, sexy and fun! And there are a lot of other fun spots very near here. Definitely make Shady Lady one of your Sacramento stops

Yelp
Came here for brunch on a Saturday a few weeks back and service was really slow even though the place was nearly empty. The interior is really moody with deep U shaped booths and lots of red drapes on the walls with a big bar in the middle. I've been here before when it was really busy, I was surprised to see it dead on a Sunday. The food was ok, but the burger was overcooked and we didn't get checked out after our food came to see if we were happy. I got the Flat Iron Steak Salad, it was excellent. Steak cooked perfectly medium rare. I am a dressing control-freak so I got it on the side. It was a strawberry vinaigrette (yum). My friend got the Shady Lady Burger, ordered medium rare but it was well-done. He barely ate it but no one came back to check on us so we called it a loss. My other friend got the Betty's Chilaquiles and said they were good. Drinks: Mimosa - my friend said it wasn't good. Delta Breeze - friend liked it. Manhattan - a classic, very good. Had to go to the bar to request the check as we were done dining for some time. Also had to bring the check back to have our card run. Wish the service had been more attentive, probably a green staff. Not sure if I will be back.

Yelp
We came here after IHT on our holiday bar crawl with my Yelp buds . The place was packed but we were in luck because a booth opened up when we walked in . This was my first time here . I had a hard time deciding what drink to get as their menu is quite big but it's categorized by alcohol so it's easy to choose . I ordered the Dark Web, which uses tequila and it was tasty . My friends had Rusty Spoon, Gin Daisy, Greyhound, and Old Fashioned. We all sampled each other's drinks and my favorite was the Rusty Spoon, it is one I want to have again . We also ordered food for us to nibble on. We had the fried Mac n Cheese bites, fries, grilled cheese, country biscuit appetizer and grilled cheese and tomato soup for Kerensa, who had just gotten off work and she was starving . Everything was delicious! We also did two rounds of Tito's shots for everyone ! I want to thank Diego our server/bartender who gave us exceptional service . Also to my generous hubby for paying the tab and treating my friends for XMas! Merry Christmas and cheers y'all!

Holly D.

Yelp
Terrible service. We sat at the bar during a very not busy hour. Multiple people walked in after us who seated after and were served first. The bartenders didn't even make eye contact or acknowledge us. We wanted to give this establishment the benefit of the doubt, but this is the third time we've tried, and each time the bartenders are rude and provide trash service.
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite spots to grab delicious food and drinks when we're in the area. No matter if you are at the bar or one of their tables always friendly welcoming staff to serve you.
google avatar

Yelp
We have not been to the Shady Lady in awhile, however we are taking some friends over to Sacramento to enjoy this 30's roll back, flocked wal experience. The bar keeps know their business. If you like your spirits with a decent nosh, you will enjoy the Shady Lady.

Yelp
Great music. Unique drinks. Fast service - not overbearing. Clean bathrooms. Reasonable prices. Only negative is that sticky floor. What more can you ask for? This is a Sac-town staple. Enjoy this gorgeous speak-easy with its beautiful ceiling, 'vintage' flapper portraits, and clean, big booths.
google avatar

Raul O.

Yelp
First time there this past Friday. My gf and I loved the atmosphere of the place. It was Jazz night, the music was keeping my attention the whole time. No cover either! Must go to if you love complex, live music! There was a lot of people, diverse environment. Just make sure to bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to loud music. It WILL be loud. The Ace of spades is also on the same , so be wary of traffic! Will go again.!
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
Drinks are okay. I was expecting something a little more sophisticated for the vibe and prices. You're better off going to the other bars on R street. Even Cafe Bernardo might have a better cocktail program than what you get here.
google avatar

Nate M.

Yelp
Loooovvveeedddd this bar! This was our last pit stop before heading to a show next door at Ace of Spades. This place is dimly lit, the bar is big, but cozy, and there's some interesting artwork on the walls... it's bewbs. We just had a few vod sods here, but they do have a great looking cocktail menu and a delicious looking late night menu. The bartender told they also have Sunday brunch specials. There is an outdoor front patio which is probably good for day drinking and most likely offers great people watching on R Street. There is parking right across the street, but it's a paid lot. I say, play it safe and either Uber or Lyft here. Party hard and party safe.
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
The vibe here is great, dark moody, but i love the music here! The live band is great (esp jazz). 5 stars for their old fashions (made the right way!) & minus 1 stat for their service. Service sint consistent, so i usually try to sit at the bar.
google avatar

Rússel W.

Yelp
Well. It's a very pleasant place to drink and maybe have a snack. Service is great. People who work there are nice and friendly. They serve Big portions. Food is good. Not the greatest tho. This place is not about food, but it comforts you well with a drink. I wish they have better selection of craft beers. Poor selection in my opinion.
google avatar

Yelp
Happy Hour at Shady Lady is always a chill and relaxing vibe. Great drink specials and food, the garlic fries were $5! Can't beat that and it was perfect! We were bar hoping and added Shady Lady to the stop. Austin was our server and he was amazing and energetic. Also, made recommendations for drinks to try! Can't beat that! Check them out for Happy Hour!
google avatar

Ivan T.

Yelp
Went in today after taking part in the holiday preparation madness, my group and I decided to stop for a quick sip. To cut to the chase, our biggest takeaway from visiting was being served water AND a cocktail in chipped AND cracked glassware. The service was present, can't say it was the best or stellar but at least there was that. Barely apologizing and not even offering to comp one single drink out of the 4 we ordered left us feeling like you can find a better experience elsewhere in midtown. 2 stars for at least noticing we entered the establishment.
google avatar

Debra S.

Yelp
Omg. We loved The Shady Lady. The speakeasy vibe is a lot of fun. Travis makes the very best Sazerac, and he's a helluva nice guy. We're looking forward to our return.
google avatar

Garfield K.

Yelp
Came on a busy saturday evening and the place was bustling. The ambiance reminded me of (!3 back room of a fancy cigar lounge (without the cigar smell) - mysterious but classy. Paintings of naked women are on the walls, adding to that vibe. They serve food, but ran out of beignets (very sad). The drinks were excellent though - I went with the laphroiag project and my god it was good. I wanted to try more, but we were bar hopping that night. Can't wait to be back and hope they have beignets when I return!
google avatar

Xica E.

Yelp
I'm never disappointed when I visit this spot. They recently reintroduced live music and it was perfect to set the vibe. The mac n cheese croquettes are so good! The drinks are always amazing, but the thing that makes this spot special is the service. Bartenders like Daniel make the experience one of the best in Sacramento!
google avatar

Mia H.

Yelp
GARLIC FRY GOOD white linen drink is tasty go have fun also i want to try the clarified milk punch so bad can someone tell me what that even is? (they were out of it when i asked for it)

Yelp
Came into town late, but still wanted dinner with a decent drink...The Shady Lady Saloon drew my attention, so I had to check it out. As soon as I entered the historic building, I adored the ornate decor and speakeasy vibe. I took a seat in one of their booths and was greeted right away. With an extensive cocktail menu inspired by New Orleans, I was obliged to try a couple starting with a refreshing French 75. Although they typically serve it with ice, I asked without and they made it just the way I wanted. The Kings Reign was an awesome, bold libation of whiskey, cold brew coffee liqueur, grand marnier, ancho Reyes chili liqueur and cocoa bitters. It was definitely one to sip on during dinner! The Duck Tots were subtle, but the harissa aioli gave them a nice balance. Since it was the week of St. Patty's Day, they were serving corned beef dishes. I went with the Corned Beef Sandwich, which consisted of pulled brisket, Russian dressing, horseradish sauce, gruyere cheese, sauerkraut, arugula, and tomatoes on marble rye, plus fries for $18. The fries were soggy, but the sandwich was freakin incredible!! The staff who first greeted me warned me that they were a bit busy, but the drinks and food came out without much of a wait at all and everyone was so nice and attentive. This was such a great first impression of delicious food and friendly hospitality in this city. I would definitely come back next time I'm here!
google avatar

Nancy E.

Yelp
Came back again and it was AMAZING!!! We had charred brussel sprouts; grilled chicken BLT, with fries, with black peppers; garlic fries; and, tomato soup with truffle grilled cheese sandwich. YUM TO IT ALL! And, thank you for your wonderful assistance, Austin!!! We will be back!
google avatar

Sophia W.

Yelp
I ate breakfast here this morning and was surprised how good the food was. My sister also enjoyed it as well. The waitress was super friendly, which is always a plus. I got the chimichangas and boy I tell you it was delicious and only $13.00... great deal. By the way we ate outside because it's really nice out and because the inside is way too dark for me.
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
Fried green tomatoes are so good. Received excellent service from the manager and bartender! The Brussel sprouts were also amazing! I love this place!
google avatar

Allyson S.

Yelp
Love Shady Lady! Great atmosphere with niche but fun decor and dark, ambient lighting. We've seen some really great live music here before too. Great cocktails and big bar with comfy seating...which can sometimes make service a little slow on busier days/nights. But all of the bartenders are really talented and I've never had a back cocktail here. The food I've eaten here has always been surprisingly good too!
google avatar

Cesar C.

Yelp
Went there on a Thursday night they had a live band playing jaz the vibe was nice drinks were good. Definitely need to go back to try out the food!
google avatar

Branden S.

Yelp
Jameson and the giant peach was amazing. Lots of good craft drinks that are made very well. Pretty chill atmosphere with outdoor seating and smoking area. I seen a bad review for not getting immediate service. News flash to that guy...... it takes time to make difficult drinks. Go somewhere else and get something not good that's made with less quality ingredients. 5* certified
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
Such a fun place. The Mac n Cheese is excellent! We had a variety of appetizers and felt full. You have to try the Absinthe, it's a treat and an event! The waitresses are really fun and keep the vibe going. Check it out, especially on 2nd Saturday.
google avatar

Andy A.

Yelp
Went here last Saturday night Not even 1/4 of the way full and got ignored by the bartender for 6-8mins Then as we were walking out he started to talk to us ! No thanks Shit service
google avatar

Anabel G.

Yelp
we (a party of 2) came here on a Tuesday evening and the environment is live and the aesthetic is dark and there's a stage it looked like they have live performances. There's at the center and the art is very creative. Staff were welcoming but it did take them a while to help us with ordering or refilling our drinks. We both had the grilled chicken sandwich, it was flavorful but the chicken pieces were super small and thin, it was definitely not filling. The shoe string fries were okay. Overall the food was okay, very limited options, this place seems like a spot to drink not for food. The staff also was not as attentive as we'd like, we asked for ketchup and straws and saw the staff member completely forget and do something else so we had to go ask. The service could be improved.
google avatar

Ashi C.

Yelp
I've been here during lunch hour and happy hour. Worst experience during evening when we walked into this place. They checked ID and let us in which is normal procedure. We wanted to sit on the sofa, they told us you can't unless you have a drink. Five girls in the party and I guess he was thinking we're going in for some fashion show or what. And we might not order any food or drinks. As soon as we sat down on the red sofa, security comes again to remind us to get drinks. Bar was jammed packed and it was hard to get orders. Finally, I got a drink and glass of water. All I'll say, they were demanding. If you go in then order either food or drinks right away.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
We had a quick drink here. They weren't bad. Our server was really nice. The ambiance is very old west.
google avatar

Ann H.

Yelp
Shady Lady is a great place to have drinks. We ordered the cognac lemon drop and the French 75. The drinks are great with a balanced amount of alcohol. I would definitely visit again for my next social gathering.
google avatar

Jaylen H.

Yelp
I asked the bartender to surprise me with something and he did . This was a super good drink. Not too strong and not too sweet the atmosphere was great as well not too loud.
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
Incredible happy hour and a full menu of food. The drinks were so good and the service was even better. My favorite thing about the atmosphere was the seating. There are booths lining every wall and a full big bar in the center of the bar. Perfect for a date or a night with friends. I wish I could have stayed longer, I had a delayed flight and had a few hours to kill. Wish it was my local bar. You Must check this place out if you're from out of town!!
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Great communication from the door. We ordered all the apps except the salad. Apps were yummy. Drinks were great.

Yelp
The started lunch this week, a group of 8 went. The service was prompt and friendly. It took a little long to get the food, maybe because lunch is new, but worth the wait. Everyone said their food was delicious. I had the tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwich. Probably the best tomato soup I've ever had.
