The Shard is the tallest building in the UK, completed in 2012 when it overtook One Canada Square it is in SE1, in Southwark and is basically underneath the recently refurbished London Bridge station. It has a whopping 72 habitable floors and 96 in total, perhaps the most interesting it is 95% owned by the Country, Qatar (It's a shame we can't use this to host a few 2022 World Cup games here!), with over 30 lifts it stands at over 1,000 feet tall.
Although mainly used as offices now, this huge glass building can be seen throughout the city and perhaps is one of the unsung landmarks of the British capital, which sadly might not get the international fame and recognition of the London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.
You are able to go up to a high floor, albeit at a high price with "The Viewing at the Shard", which costs £32 for an adult, I really find this to be too expensive but most tourists would pay this because it's where you're going to get the best views of London, when I enquired about seeing The Shard there was an extremely pushy salesman, trying to force me to pay, even when I said "I'll come back", he continued to push it with no mercy for my bank balance. Even when I said I was going to get a drink first, he reminded me I could buy drinks up there when I paid him, you'd think he was on huge levels of commission!
I later found out there is a slightly hidden lift which takes you up slightly to street level and a newer part of London Bridge Station, where you can see The Shard slightly more clearly and there is also an entrance to the offices up there.
There is a small shopping arcade also close to the Shard with a Starbucks, which isn't really worth writing home about either sadly.
The Shard is also close to Borough Market and Borough High Street, which perhaps are worth a browse around after viewing this stunning, modern building.
The Shard is a stunning, modern and cool building, the tallest building in London and the whole of The United Kingdom, but the fact is it is ruined by overpriced tickets, a confusing layout to get in or get a better view, and pushy salesman. Also it remains a wasted opportunity there isn't a bar or restauraunt on a high floor open to the public without having to buy a viewing ticket first, this could be the perfect place to grab a beverage or light snacks such as Afternoon Tea, so it really is a wasted opportunity, especially considering many nearby coffee shops including Starbucks, have no or very little seating.
Still a really cool place in the Borough, Southwark area of London which is becoming pretty cool and growing with the work going on there, and of course Borough Market. 3*
