The Shoap - Review - Angel - London - The Infatuation

"The Shoap has become the de facto meeting spot for Scots living in London. But even those who don’t get a heavy hit of nostalgia while mainlining crispy-edged macaroni pies will find a lot to like at this Scottish cafe-deli in Angel. It’s not fancy, and it won’t blow anyone away, but warm fuzzy feelings are guaranteed while eating one of the cheese and onion-stuffed pieces (sandwiches) from here. The Glasgow morning rolls improve the bleakest of commutes—our order is a crispy roll with a square sausage, tattie scone, bacon, and lots of brown sauce—and pints of Tennent’s and Scotch pies are a good way to spend any weekday evening. The setup is straightforward but friendly regulars, welcoming staff, and comforting dishes make it hard to pry yourself away to catch your train. photo credit: Kestin photo credit: Kestin" - Sinéad Cranna

A Scottish deli. Very simple layout sering up very good lunches. We came here after getting drenched in the rain and its one of my fav places in London now. Some of the best bread ive tried, charred to perfection but still super fluffy. The sausage patty was flavourful but definitely will add on extras next time. The chicken curry pie was also delicious and the crust was hard and crumbled as you bit into it. A must try place.

It gets busy so be warned. Serves tennents and all the other things you can imagine from Scotland. Breakfast rolls and macaroni pies are the stars of the show. Buckfast in the fridge was a nice touch but no half bottles when we were there damn! Will visit again. Close to the tube station at Angel.

The Shoap - 11 am on Sunday - had no one in the queue when we arrived and ordered 1 sandwich and a mac and cheese pie. We were given the pie right away and stood to the side. Efficient - we thought. We soon came to realise that the majority of people sitting down did not have food, and 15 minutes later we became concerned that it would be a long wait. They proceeded to bring out 1-2 sandwiches every 10 minutes. I think we waited in total about 35 minutes. I lost count, it might have been longer. There was no apology, we were standing that whole time. They continued taking more orders and the store got busy. I was thinking the whole time my mac and cheese would go cold so I started to eat it standing up in the Shoap. We finally got the singular sandwich and took it outside. Taste of the mac and cheese pie - very good. As far as mac and cheeses go it’s nice - cheesier than some. And the pastry was nice. I only wish they provided some hot sauce on the side as an option. The sandwich was fine. Bread was too big for the sausage. The first time trying this sausage and it was more sour than I expected - tasted mustardy. It was like spam meets corned beef. It wasn’t particularly hot. Not sure if it was an off day, but I can’t say I’d go here again unless I really wanted some mac and cheese in the area. Lots of Scottish groceries too - tablet, shortbread, etc.

I’ve been aware of this place for years, but living in Australia has kept me away; finally made the trip and I can confirm it was well worth it. Well-fired roll of square sausage, black pudding and a golden fried egg was a challenge to eat; but good grief was it tasty.

The well fired breakfast roll is something to behold. Fresh, buttered, soft and chewy and delicious. I have been meaning to visit for a long while. This place did not disappoint. Lovely staff too, could not be more welcoming. Busy on a Sunday at 11am but plenty of rolls still left. Get one of everything on your roll, it's delicious.

The food was amazing as always however was a bit worried when we arrived as our pre order had been missed, but luckily they had enough rolls to fulfil it.

Cracking place in London for Scottish expats! The breakfast rolls are brilliant. Greg and the team are so welcoming. I wish I could come here everyday! There's plenty of produce you can take home with you as well. The food quality is really great, the menu varies from time to time. I really hope in the future when they expand they can start to sell loose rolls to take home as they are brilliant. I'll be a loyal customer - a dream to get proper Scottish morning rolls down here!

It's expensive when compared to what would be paid in Scotland, £5 for pie at lunch and £5.50 for a roll n square. It's London prices. However, the rolls are divine and the square slice fabulous. It's a wee taste of home for us ex-pats. The coffee is good, there is tenants on draught. The people are very friendly and they were selling tablet when I was there. I too an English colleague who thought the vegetarian square slice was very good
