Phoenix’s 10 Best Breweries | Eater Phoenix

"This Tempe brewery’s spacious patio of murals and greenery under the desert sky is a fine place to enjoy beer skillfully brewed yards away. The Shop’s standby ales, like its legendary Church Music IPA, can be found in metro Phoenix far beyond the brewery and have developed a loyal following. Still, regulars time taproom visits with the rhythms of weekly or near-weekly special releases, including Neonic (rotating fruited sours in flavors like tangerine-marshmallow and mango lassi). Lately, The Shop has moved increasingly away from IPAs (which are still great) and to more diverse styles, like Mexican lager and dark gose." - Chris Malloy

Google
We visited The Shop Beer Co. in Tempe, looking for a laid-back vibe, good brews, and an inviting outdoor patio. The atmosphere lived up to its casual charm, though the music leaned a bit heavy for our taste. The Church Music IPA was a standout, boasting refreshing citrus notes, and the $10 flight (four brews) was a solid value. However, the outdoor space could use some attention to cleanliness, and parking is limited. Overall, a good spot for beer enthusiasts looking to relax and explore some quality local brews. Saluti

Cool place to check out just west of downtown. Beer options were good, and the nuts were excellent (albeit a tad pricey). Seating outside was a premium with some larger tables occupied by 2 people when smaller tables were available.

My husband and I visited this brewery twice in two days on a long weekend to Phoenix area. Great beer, atmosphere, music and bartenders. Knowledgeable staff. Friendly patrons. Definitely a must if you visit Tempe area. Easy scooter ride from most of town. We had a blast!

Google
Total hidden gem. You’d never know it was here just driving by, but if you know, you know. Super chill spot with solid local beer and a DJ laying down smooth chill hop vibes. The patio’s got shade and misters, which is a necessity in the heat. Just a great spot to kick back and reset. Couldn’t recommend enough.

I’m a fan of The Shop Beer Co. I’m in love with the design of the patio and bar. It’s a friendly neighborhood brewery! You can see the mash tubs and fermentation area. They offer a nice swag selection, so you can show off your love for The Shop Beer Co. The bartenders are really nice and attentive. I recommend the Church Music it’s a hoppy IPA. I promise I’m not a hipster I liked microbrews since a long time before it was trendy.

Great place to go! Ambience beer selection and food rotation. The shop has my number one favorite local beer in Phoenix hands down, one of my favorite beers all time actually: Church Music. Go and enjoy here then buy the beers for at home!

Google
This place is just simply rad. Super friendly staff and accommodating for big groups. Great beer selection - good options to take home and cool merch. The atmosphere outside was 👊🏼 - they have table games and brought one as well. They have food truck rotation and we were amazed by “Food for the Soul” Jazzy Z’s Cajun cuisine 👊🏼

Google
Great little hidden gem in Tempe, AZ with an awesome beer selection. I'm a fan of sours and enjoyed the atmosphere with some friends. They had a food truck outside, a nice outdoor seating patio with misters going and plenty of seating inside. Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
In PHX for work. My normal stop is at Wren House but heard about other breweries that have good Hazy IPA's. After exploring and trying to remember recommendations from the last time I was in town & the web I chose The Shop. Awesome outdoor seating area and cozy inside. Weather was amazing so I sat outside. Scale: 1-5 Beer: 5 - Church Music IPA was my first beer. Very nice, juicy, and hazy with the smooth mouthfeel. I tried another IPA that was good but wished I had another Church music because it was so good. Atmosphere: 5 - Lots of wood! While stucco is king around here I felt the vibe that only wood provides. With exposed trusses inside and wooden beams, columns and shade outside I felt very comfortable. Service: 5 - Feisty bartender with a great personality that I really liked. She provided samples and cares about making your time here fun. Food: I missed it but they do have food trucks. Cultural/Political Agenda (1-5): 5 -No preachy nonsense--just beer, as it should be.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick visit with our out of town guests so they could enjoy some Arizona local brews. We were greeted immediately on entry and needed a few minutes to figure out what to order. They were so helpful and knowledgeable so it made making a choice a little easier. So many delicious brews and so little time so getting a flight was a great option to consider. We did not get anything from the food truck this time. We know that they always have something delicious to offer when we need a bite to eat. From what we know, the food trucks vary so it's nice to know there's something new nearly every time we need to satisfy any hunger needs. Everyone was happy with their brews and were happy we stopped in to quench some thirsts. We're confident in knowing that every time we bring anyone here they'll be able to find something special. Parking is easy and the entrance and food truck are easily accessible. A group of bicyclists easily rolled right in to the outside patio just as we were leaving so we're happy to see they've got lots of business coming in! We're confidence that locals and tourists alike that come in to check their offerings will find something that suits their tastes and needs!

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Church Music - #1 seller and I can see why. So smooth; I could have drank this all night. Our guest who is a regular customer here got Gangster Cologne, another smooth beer. I could hang out here all the time. My favorite breweries are ones that do NOT sell food, and where they can focus only on the beer. BYO food. There is a food truck, and local restaurants within walking distance. And they probably have delivery from nearby places. According to our guest, the food trucks change often. Atmosphere - Cool local spot. This looked and felt like a "neighborhood business." Cool decor, see pictures. Indoor or heated outdoor seating. Not sure about the parking situation, because we just walked here from the house. Open 7 days a week from 11am or noon until 10pm, 11pm or midnight. Service - Good. Counter service. To-go also available, see picture. Price - $16 + generous tip. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2016.

Yelp
Such a cool spot! Great beers, patio, and service. It's fun to sit outside and watch the planes fly over! They have a food truck most days too, which is a huge plus!

Yelp
Came on a Saturday night and loved it. I am not a beer drinker but I loved the music they were playing and was really enjoying my time so I decided to get a sour beer. I love that it's dog friendly. The day we went they were selling street tacos right outside which was pretty convenient. Overall great spot. I hope they keep playing Latin music cuz I loved it.

Yelp
Really enjoyed all of the beers I tried here! My favorite was the Neonic: Orange Julius. I also enjoyed the coffee brown, fate, and Hefeweizen. Service was quick and there were plenty of seats inside. There's also a big patio in back but it was pretty crowded on the Sunday (also final four weekend so could've been due to that). I'll have to come back to try the neonic: booberry tart. Overall everything was great!
google avatar

Tracy T.

Yelp
Giving these 5 stars solely on the beer. However, it is some of the best beer I've had in AZ! So, well deserved. Cool ambiance - outdoor patio with trees growing right in the middle . And I heard it's dog friendly? Don't quote me on that...

Yelp
One of my favorite local Tempe hangs. The Shop Beer Co has a cozy inside, expansive outside and is an overall great place to spend time with a partner, friend or especially groups. Depending where you sit, it can be intimate or casual. Very versatile. The bartenders are always friendly and kind, offering recommendations and explanations about the brews on the menu. And the beers are great! Of course, their flagship Church Music IPA is a must try-- a full bodied hazy with nice hoppy taste. They often have partnerships with other breweries or companies which I love. Little fridge of beers and NA drinks to go, too. Almost every day of the week they have food trucks if you're getting peckish. One of the best breweries around. Big fan!

Yelp
Your beer is fabulous... but your sound system SUCKS. Speakers everywhere cutting in and out, out of sync with the other speakers... annoying. It also seems like an ongoing issue because when I talked to the bartender, am she was like, I know, there is nothing I can do about it.
google avatar

Yelp
The service here is very friendly, and the bar has a chill and relaxed vibe overall. They have trivia on Mondays, which is fun as well. There are usually also food trucks. They can be hit or miss, but for the most part I would say are pretty good on average. Drinks are good and there's a decent amount of seating. They have a parking lot, which can fill up quick, but there's also pretty good street parking nearby.
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
ZERO alcoholic options for anyone who is celiac, gluten sensitive, or diabetic. Some reviews or pics (here or on Google) might show cider or mimosas, but that is not available all the time. All they have is beer. The patio and stage area are pretty cool, but I won't be back due to the limited options.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the beer! My husband and I always enjoyed Church Music and we finally decided to go to the brewery. We had a flight and all the beers were exceptional. The flight comes with 4 beers. The Crispy is amazing! We decided to take some beer home too. They are dog friendly as well. Our dog enjoyed this spot and they have water bowls! Lots of shade in their patio too. Food trucks are scheduled. Great spot to hang out!
google avatar

Yelp
Busy place with an adequate beer selection. Indoor and outdoor seating. Great service. Heaters for the cool evening outside. Church music hazy IPA is good.

Yelp
We love coming here on the weekends to have a beer and sit outside in their outdoor area and our pup loves coming here too! It seems these days we don't go to too many places anymore without our loyal hound accompanying us. This is a great spot that has plenty of outdoor seating so you can bring your furry friend too! The beers here are excellent and they brew on site. When we last came in, my partner had the Coffee Brown Nitro and I had The Slasher (blood orange wheat). Both were great! The only downside to this place is that no food is served here, but on some days, there is someone selling food in the parking lot. The last time we were here, there was a guy selling whole pizzas. Since they don't serve food, they don't mind you bringing in your own, so we did. We enjoyed some Ethiopian food while have some great beers in their outdoor area. They also have lamp heaters available, so you'll keep warm during the winter. Definitely give this place a try if you like a low-key outdoor bar with fantastic draft beers!
google avatar

Stacy O.

Yelp
We stopped in for a few beers on a weekday afternoon. The bar area was quiet and mostly empty; it seems most people were enjoying the mild weather and the outdoor seating. We ordered a few flights and headed outdoors. The outdoor seating area is expansive with large picnic tables, some shaded and some in the sun. We plopped ourselves in the middle and got to work tasting our way through most of what was on tap. There was a wide assortment of beers, from some juice-forward sours that tasted like a mimosa to a flavored stout. Everything I sampled was enjoyable. The outdoor seating area appeared to be dog friendly. We were befriended by a sweet bulldog who was wandering (his humans asked if it was okay first!). Though they don't serve food other than pre-packaged snacks (popcorn, meat sticks, etc.), there was a food truck on site and pulled right up to the outdoor seating area. We didn't partake but it's good to know as an option.

Yelp
If you love a cool ambiance, nice selection of locally crafted beers, and a great location - The Shop Beer Co will be enjoyable to you! They are conveniently located at in a quiet business park area so I would imagine it can get busy at times. Parking was a bit tight but it really was worth it! They have both indoor and outdoor seating - complete with a couple of fully grown trees right on the patio! Dogs are welcome and there were a few adorable pups hanging out with their humans. The selection of beers was pretty diverse and I tried three different kinds of- with my personal absolute favorite being the Coffee Brown Nitro! OMG IT WAS SOOO GOOD! Church Music and Donkey Llama were also nice but the Coffee Brown just seemed to be the perfect blend of taste and punch. They also had some food available which was being prepared outside but I couldn't indulge at the time.Wait staff were aVery personable and helped with my beer selection being very informed about any and all that was beer related. Check them out!

Yelp
Great brewery! The space is fantastic. Indoors has an old saloon feel with leather backed chairs etc. Outdoor patio is great. Plenty of greenery and shade to make it pleasant when it's warm out. Food truck options available, but, were not there on a Saturday at noon when I was there. Location is industrial, but, has a good amount of parking. Beer selection was good, but, not great. A few IPA's but all either hazy or doubles; downgrade a star for not a single standard IPA on tap. Beer standards are pretty low in AZ, so the offerings here are still well above average for the area.

Yelp
Never been to the mothership before. Church music is our go to anywhere we can find it. Came here for our anniversary. Tried a lot of stuff but still came away with church music winning out. Very cool experience here. We will be back!

Marcus H.

Yelp
Birth place for Church Music. Lots of other great flavors. Food trucks rotate for lunch and dinner. Oxtail dumplings were fantastic at lunch. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and super chill staff. New favorite place in Tempe
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
It's been too long since I was last here. The good news is that they have this delicious stout that was not available many moons ago. They have more snack options now and still have the food truck if you do want to eat something. These guys are always super friendly, it's pretty much the brewery code in AZ that you have to be awesome to work at a brewery. They have a unique bar/tasting room that is well built with décor reminiscent of a college dorm. Very chill spot, very good beer and in a sense of community that have a few guest taps from other breweries.

Yelp
We were in town for Arizona Craft Beer Week, we went to the Strong Beer Festival on Saturday and stayed on Sunday to check out some local breweries and restaurants. We choose The Shop because we had some of their beers at the festival and wanted to try more! What a great place with a large outdoor beer garden (patio area) great beers on tap and friendly people behind the bar! We got a few flights so we could try more of what they had to offer and we liked all of the beers! We will definitely come back on our next trip to Phoenix.
google avatar

Yelp
From the atmosphere, to the tasty beers they brew, and the amazing staff, there's too many positives to name at Shop Beer Co! This is a local staple my partner and I visit weekly and highly recommend! The FYTM is my favorite beer and is only brewed here so you MUST check it out ASAP! Not to mention, it's steps from Tempe Town Lake and perfect for a rewarding beer after a long jog!
google avatar

Aaron W.

Yelp
Pretty much yeah you like beer you should be here. Why cus it's delicious. Food no we do beer and you like beer so let's drink beer. Service, who cares cus the beer is great but sure the service is good. Just turn the music up CHURCH MUSIC that is and enjoy.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't come here. Ok. Just kidding. It's one of those places I'm hesitant to leave a review because I want to keep it to myself. This place is awesome and usually a low key place to enjoy some really amazing brews. Don't expect a restaurant or table service... although a food truck might manically appear on the weekend night. Good food trucks. Like AF kind of food trucks. And the beer. OMG the beer is so good. Also, thank you, thank you, thank you for no TVs.

Yelp
This hidden gem is right around the corner from our home. We walk very often to explore their changing menu with their own and good collaborations with local breweries. My favorite beer in town is from them, The Crispy, a yummy blonde lager that is light and refreshing. They have connections with food trucks as they don't have their own food. This is such a great way to promote collaborations and we have learned and tasted so many yummy options when we visit depending on the truck there that day. It is not always available so check their Instagram page to know. Recommended if you're in the area! Picture: We purchase their cans and bring them with us when we go to the lake. That's how good they are!
google avatar

Sake C.

Yelp
Dog friendly with large outdoor patio seating! Ordered the beer flight and happened to stopped by here on Monday night for trivia, which was a nice surprise. Beer selection is okay, only a few options to my liking.
google avatar

Javi B.

Yelp
This neighborhood bar is so chill. The vibe is almost like being in a friend's backyard. The prices are super reasonable and though I had a flight to taste their other popular beers, nothing compares to the church music.
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
The food off the Truck tasted amazing. Quesadillas with pineapple-barria- Monterey- Pastor was incredible. Brews are cold AF. Check out the Church Music. Service is helpful and full of knowledge. The decor and feel is real chill and relaxing

Yelp
My go to spot for beer while I was working in Tempe. You've probably seen their Church Music IPA in a lot of restaurant chains or even at the grocery store, and for good reason! Very cool and chill atmosphere and amazing service and staff. You can see where they brew their beer through a window on the way to the bathroom and it's amazing! Super cool space!

Souvir B.

Yelp
I have had the church music since the inception... one of the finest but today I had one from a can I bought at sprouts... wtf happened.. it was bitter .. tasteless... sadly this hazy is off my list..
google avatar

Jack S.

Yelp
The place for "Hop Heads" or the IPA guy/gal in your friend group. No TVs, no distractions, all beer is what Shop Beer Co. does best. The Church Music Juicy IPA is phenomenal, a beer for anyone, and one of those "adult juice boxes" type IPAs. I took a step further with the F.Y.I.T.M DIPA which was a solid, heavy beer to end on. It was nice to see that they have a rotating food truck station serving entrees but I had to grab a nut sack instead. Will be back no cap.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
The beer here is really good and they have a solid selection of things they make and beers from other breweries. Nice inside space and a huge patio. The always have a food truck and it never disappoints. Beer tenders are always very friendly and Knowledgeable as well. Highly recommend coming here if you like craft beer and you're in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Casual place. Yummy craft beers on tap, differentvarieties than your standard pub. A very enjoyable evening. :-)

Yelp
A kick-ass little place to grab a brew! The Coffee Brown is on point! If you haven't been here, it's a must stop! Check it out and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Four of us came on a Monday for 6:30pm trivia. They have plenty of outdoor seating (dog-friendly) which is ideal as the weather gets cooler, plus booths and tables inside. Beer was really tasty and very well priced. They have sours, ales, and IPAs galore. Staff is super friendly, and since a majority of people were sitting outside, they'd make rounds to pick up empty glasses and fulfill beer orders so we could focus on knocking out trivia questions. Although they don't serve food, there was a pizza truck (The Pizza Sloth) which was the perfect snack to pair with some yummy beers - we ordered some pizza and they delivered it to our table! Their website (http://www.theshop.beer/tap-list) has a list of trucks for about a month out, usually starting around 5-6pm. Also, their website is super helpful and extremely informative - would recommend to check it out. Great place to unwind with a few beers, whether with friends or even on a date. Loved the atmosphere and can't wait to be back!

Yelp
I felt like I was at a bar back home in NYC, which felt nice and homey. It's cute that it's family-friendly - there were three families there that Saturday with babies! It's pretty small, but they've fit several tables inside, and a ton of tables outside on the patio if you're up for that. Bartender and manager were really nice as well. My fiancé and our friends got a ton of beers that they loved, but I couldn't give you their names. It seems like a place to try a bunch of drinks and have fun with it. I didn't drink, but I got the bag of bourbon espresso caramel popcorn and downed the entire thing because it was so delicious. Definitely get it if you're in the mood for a great snack!
google avatar

Shannon D.

Yelp
LOVED THIS PLACE! It's been to long in finding a really good and "homey" place to come for great beer. My husband and I were driving around last weekend and he had talked about driving by this hole in the wall. Well, I was driving and I definitely drove past when we came here. Had to turn around because you can miss it so quickly! Worth every minute. We loved that there was a food truck, which was AMAZING, and the vibe of the whole place. My husband absolutely loved the playlist they had going, thanks to our new found friend bartender who kept playing Coheed and Cambria (I do not remember his name), but he was rad. I loved that this place was small and felt very welcoming. We tried a couple of flights and took home a few cans, would absolutely recommend and will definitely be returning this weekend. This is the kind of place where you are welcomed in with a smile, and everyone is your friend.

Chris B.

Yelp
Great local beer company that I stumbled across. Great selection of tasty beers at a great price for craft. Worth a trip for sure.
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
I like the beer and the vibe of this place. Being from Seattle, I had to adjust to the different kind of IPA's they have. Very light and citrusy instead of a hop bomb. But dang they b good! I Also like how nice the staff is. This is at least 50% of any experience for me. Nice people make the world go round and this place makes the world spin because they care about what they do. I like that!
google avatar

Monica O.

Yelp
The Shop Beer Co is a nice addition to Tempe tuck away in a little residential neighborhood and is becoming a favorite little hang out spot. So far everything I have tried is great! Coffee Brown is my favorite so far. I have even tried their cold nitro brewed coffee and was pleasantly surprised by how great it was and had no bitter after bite. Every time I go the staff have been friendly. The Shop Beer Co is a just a cool spot to hang out. If you haven't been go give them a try!
google avatar

Yelp
Great IPAs. Amazing patio and with some aviation fun overhead. It can get a little noisy but it's worth it.
google avatar

Jojo D.

Yelp
My favorite spot to enjoy a beer and food truck food. No tvs so...theirs that, so be prepared to communicate with people love how they invite food trucks and hope they still do it.

Quinn G.

Yelp
GREAT local brewery. I moved to Phoenix recently and tried all the local beer staples, and not to sound like a snob, but boo. Most of them range from mediocre, to "would not put in my mouth." Well along came The Shop to pick me up from the dregs of weak-beer valley! Growing up in CO and then moving to WI, I was lucky to taste some truly wonderful local beers. Now I have The Shop (and little else). You can often find CHURCH MUSIC, a delicious, juicy, not overly-hoppy IPA, on tap at local restaurants, and the rest of the menu is well-worth exploring. There is an indoor and outdoor space that are both colorful and comfortable. They don't have a kitchen but DO have food trucks faithfully stationed near the patio. It is actually a fantastic space for a laid back afternoon or evening of drinking. Bring a big group, a date, or your dogs, The Shop is a fun little spot for all. And the staff is superb. My only complaint is that they had this magnificent ichor called TICKLE FIGHT, and then ripped it away. Please bring back Tickle Fight. My visiting friends (also annoying beer nerds) and I all fell in love with it. They even have a can of it up on the wall just to torment me when I am there.
google avatar

Charles R.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place They are doing everything right and it is so appreciated. Their quality, creativity, and attention to customer detail is second to none !!!! I literally check in daily with them to find out what is new. During these times of uncertainty they have definitely been an amazing local company that you can count on!
google avatar

Teresa A.

Yelp
Upon arrival, you would never guess it's a brewery, it is a very hidden little gem. I would not have know a brewery was around this area. Only heard about it from a groupon deal. The estsbmisment is very clean, simple and well defined. As well as rustic and inviting and friendly staff. They have an array of beer choices, great selection of music and a great atmosphere for socializing with a vintage, quaint and , Old school feeling. Cons: it's a bring your own food establishment However it can be good or bad dependent on the patron. Overall: Would and will come back, as well as recommend.

Yelp
Stopped into The Shop Beer Co with some coworkers midweek after work. I'm not a huge beer drinker anymore... so I had some questions. The bartender was super friendly and helpful... and even let us try a couple of samples before deciding on which drink we wanted for our first round. When it came time for my coworkers to go for round two, a new bartender had taken over... and was equally as friendly, informative, and willing to pour a couple of samples for us to try. They have a solid selection of beer available... so be sure to try them all! My visit was occurred prior to I had to adopt a gluten-free lifestyle, so I'm not sure what, if any, gluten-free options they offer... but I will be sure to update my review after stopping back in! They do not serve food here, so they have a food truck offer up delicious bites. I believe they rotate food trucks on different nights of the week. While I didn't eat on this trip, I did drool over some of the food that fellow patrons were enjoying! *****FIVE STARS*****

Yelp
Good first impression! I was having a chat with the girlfriend earlier about all these beer places that seem to have spontaneously materialized all over the place. Earlier-20's me would be bursting through the seams with excitement. Late-20's me, we agreed, is less preoccupied with craft beer than ever before. Well, that's got to change (to a responsible extent)! Enter The Shop Beer Co., a stone's throw away from home, and a nice view after sunset when their lights come on. The bar itself is a small but cozy space; I could've done without the music, as there is already enough noise coming from the conversations in every direction. For a little more room to stretch, there is an adjacent seating area outside. Parked in front is whichever food truck is on the roster (schedule is available on their website). While my IPA fandom has long exceeded its expiration date, I made an exception this afternoon for the Church Music (6.7% ABV). It was great; definitely rivals most church music (couldn't resist), and that juicy pineapple finish is evident at every sip. A solid choice for a summer afternoon in Tempe, and I will probably grab another the next time I visit. So gather, brothers and sisters -- a service is in session. I am pleased to have initiated this Arizonan beer expedition with The Shop Beer Co., and with it being so close I could probably zipline there, I'll be back in no time.

Yelp
They are starting to put together some respectable beers. Church Music is decent, but not great, and FYTIM sells a lot, but for a 10%+ IPA, it lacks flavor. It's good, just not great. They have, however, been putting out some interesting sours. Their passion fruit one recent was solid, but the strawberry was awful. Food trucks are decent, but none stand out. The space is nice. Not much indoors, but the patio is cool. Bartenders have always been helpful and nice. Happy to pour you a quick sample. Bottom line, beers are pretty good and getting better.
