Phuket, Thailand, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene - Eater

"Phuket’s tin mining legacy is woven into the design aesthetic of the Slate through rustic wood, azure hues, rust, steel, and southern Thai graphic motifs." - Austin Bush

The Slate

"American Bill Bensley has recast this formerly ho-hum three-star resort into something modern and unexpectedly funky, with witty industrial touches like a nut-and-bolt toilet paper holder and old-fashioned outdoor metal showers that use bamboo water tanks. The lush landscaping with encircling lagoons creates a sense of exclusivity that makes it almost unnecessary to cross the busy street to the broad public beach. The 277 rooms sport pillowtop beds and fabrics from Bangkok’s trendsetting Beyond Living brand. Dinner at the restaurant, Black Ginger, is an elegant affair, with local favorites like poh piah sod, a spring roll overflowing with sweet sausage and roast pork. The Stockroom, an in-house antiques shop, sells well-chosen items ranging from Chiang Mai silk wraps to hand-carved wood furnishings from Kerala."

Since 2015 we have fallen in love again each year with the beauty, style, experiences and especially the interactions with each and every member of the team who work passionately to ensure our stay at The Slate is memorable every time. The unique traditional decor coupled with artistic design in both your room, the restaurants and bars makes The Slate the stand-out resort in Phuket to visit. ||The resort is cocooned within natural surroundings which makes you feel worlds away from your hectic daily lives. A walk around the grounds puts you in touch with nature in a peaceful, relaxed and tropical environment which cannot be experienced at your regular corporate hotels.||The pools enable you to enjoy whichever mood you wish to be in; peaceful calm at the Snakeskin pool, musical chillout with drinks at the Pulley Pool & Bar or a family day at the Lagoon pool complete with waterfall. Choose any of these and you will experience service second to none to make sure your visit is memorable.||The rooms are decorated and styled to make you really feel that you are staying in a boutique hotel. The maid and evening turndown service ensures that your room is always welcoming, inviting and provides the personal touch to keep you feeling that your experience really does matter to all at the resort. The beds and pillows really are the comfiest I have ever experienced at any hotel in the world I have stayed at.||Breakfast caters for all tastes, nationalities and appetites! The selection and quality of food is excellent, with once again, service levels excellent.||If you decide to use any of the restaurants, you will be blown away with the both the decor and quality of food on offer. The prices are unbelievable value when considering the level of service and how amazing the dishes not only taste but look.||The resort offers buy one get one free offers and these cannot be missed. You can drink professionally prepared cocktails in luxurious surroundings for the same price as you can expect outside of the hotel...why would you go anywhere else?!||If The Slate was a museum, you would gladly pay money to simply visit. Each and every room (including the rest rooms) are decorated to such an unbelievably high standard. If you are visiting Phuket, you must visit The Slate to have a truly unique experience in unique surroundings, all made extra special by the genuine passion and care from each and every member of the staff you meet who work at the resort

The Slate is such a great place for a self-retreat. Super peaceful and quiet, perfect for recharging. There are lots of activities to do — I really enjoyed the yoga classes, they were so good and relaxing. The food? So good! Every meal was a highlight. And there are several pools to choose from, each with its own vibe, which made it fun to switch things up each day. Overall, I loved it and I’ll definitely go back. If you’re looking for a chill place to relax and unwind, I totally recommend this place!

We had an amazing stay a The Slate Phuket. The entire resort is beautiful, very well thought out and had a very exclusive feel to it whilst still being so relaxing. The staff are all so lovely and thoughtful. Ian at the snakeskin pool bar is a great guy and greeted us by name everyday even when we were just walking past the pool.||We also had Thai fusion massage treatments which was a nice treat and we both came out of there feeling on top of the world.||Our room overlooking snakeskin pool felt very luxurious with the bath out on the balcony. ||We took advantage of the gym, paddle boards and tennis courts. ||During our stay we ate at Rivet, Black Ginger and Tin Mine and well as the Snakeskin pool bar. Every meal was prepared with care, and catered to my vegetarian needs. The raft over to Back Ginger made it an extra special experience. The breakfast in Tin Mine was great, with a huge selection to suit everybody.||The only improvement we felt could be made was to introduce evening entertainment as the evenings felt very quiet. We did play snooker & pool in the sports bar but that seemed to be the only place with people in it after about 10pm.||We loved our stay though and have already recommended you to anyone we’ve spoken to since we’ve been home. Unfortunately we were only there for 3 nights but even on our very first day there we were already talking about coming back again in the future.

This was our 8th… maybe 10th visit to The Slate, and honestly, I’ve lost count – it has become our absolute favorite escape in Phuket. From the moment we arrived, we were once again reminded why we keep coming back. The Thai hospitality is already legendary, but at The Slate, it’s elevated to something truly special. The attention to detail, thoughtful service, and stunning design by Bill Bensley continue to set the standard.||This time, a few things stood out that made the experience feel even more refined:||Music & Atmosphere: The lounge music in Tin Min, Rebar, and Pulley Pool & Bar was spot on – chilled, stylish, and perfectly matched to each space. It created a seamless, relaxing vibe throughout the resort.||Pools: Snakeskin Pool remains our personal sanctuary. It’s quiet, serene, and wrapped in lush paradise. An ideal spot for unwinding.||Dining: There's been a clear improvement since our 2022 visit. The menus are more varied, with noticeable upgrades across Tin Mine, Underground Café, and even the in-room dining options. ||Plus, there are ongoing promotions and deals on food, drinks, and spa treatments, which added great value.||Staff & Communication: We noticed a real improvement in English communication this time around, making everything from check-in to dining and activity planning smooth and stress-free.||New App: A very welcome addition! The daily notifications about hotel activities and island events helped us make the most of our stay. It’s practical, modern, and enhances the guest experience.||The Slate isn't just a resort – it's a curated experience that continues to evolve without losing its soul. Every visit feels both familiar and refreshed. A huge thank you to the entire team – you make us feel like part of the family every single time.||Can’t wait for our next stay!

I recently stayed at The Slate Phuket to celebrate my wife's birthday, and from start to finish, the experience was outstanding. From the very beginning, the reservations team was fantastic, a special thanks to Panuchanart (Rosie), who made the booking process effortless. She was incredibly helpful in finding the perfect accommodation for our family of five and answered every query promptly and professionally. She even arranged seamless transport to and from the hotel, which made our arrival and departure smooth and stress-free. Upon arrival, the check-in process was quick and efficient, and we were delighted with our spacious ground floor room. However, we did feel that the toilet door lacked a bit of privacy. When I raised this with Auy at the front desk, she handled it with exceptional professionalism and understanding, offering us an upgrade to another room at a very reasonable rate. Her thoughtful approach made it an easy decision, and we’re so glad we accepted it. The upgraded room came with butler service, and we had the pleasure of being looked after by Nim and Reen. Nim was our first point of contact warm, cheerful, and incredibly helpful. She made sure we settled in comfortably, assisted with everything from buggy service to activity bookings, and even went the extra mile in helping us arrange medication for our eldest son, who was showing signs of heat exhaustion. During Nim’s days off, Reen took over with the same level of care and attention to detail, ensuring our experience remained flawless. Overall, we had a truly wonderful stay at The Slate, made even more special by the incredible team who genuinely cared about making our experience memorable. We will definitely be returning. Thank you to everyone who made our trip so special!

What a fantastic haven of peace and tranquility in wonderful surroundings supported by excellent service and kind and hospital staff. We are currently here for 11 nights and have a great room, 3236 which caters for everything we ever asked for. We have already had several trips, food tour, elephant 🐘 sanctuary, and today luxury speed boat tour of islands including James Bond Island. Glad we have a two day break now si we can return to enjoying the hotel and grounds. We have booked the signature restaurant, The Black Ginger for tomorrow followed by The Rivet on Saturday night. We can say without any hesitation or doubt that you will not be disappointed if you every get the opportunity to stay here, back to the holiday.

loved our stay here! The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The hotel is quiet and well-maintained, making it a great place to relax.Only downside, it’s a bit far from the main tourist spots, but worth it if you don’t mind the travel. Would definitely come back!

Overall, excellent. Prices for food and drink are reasonable considering the quality. Biggest gripe - automatically charging 10% service charge and then leaving a tip option on the bill. I would be interested to hear if all the service charges are split between all staff ?
