Phuket, Thailand, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene - Eater

"Phuket’s tin mining legacy is woven into the design aesthetic of the Slate through rustic wood, azure hues, rust, steel, and southern Thai graphic motifs." - Austin Bush

The Slate

"American Bill Bensley has recast this formerly ho-hum three-star resort into something modern and unexpectedly funky, with witty industrial touches like a nut-and-bolt toilet paper holder and old-fashioned outdoor metal showers that use bamboo water tanks. The lush landscaping with encircling lagoons creates a sense of exclusivity that makes it almost unnecessary to cross the busy street to the broad public beach. The 277 rooms sport pillowtop beds and fabrics from Bangkok’s trendsetting Beyond Living brand. Dinner at the restaurant, Black Ginger, is an elegant affair, with local favorites like poh piah sod, a spring roll overflowing with sweet sausage and roast pork. The Stockroom, an in-house antiques shop, sells well-chosen items ranging from Chiang Mai silk wraps to hand-carved wood furnishings from Kerala."

The beds and bedding at the slate are worth 5 stars on their own. They were the comfiest I have ever slept on! Everywhere also smells divine. So much so that we bought some of their beautiful Jasmine products to bring home with us. We were lucky to be upgraded to a pool room and it was spectacular, so much space and wonderful amenities. The style is very industrial chic, lots of concrete, mean and moody lighting, stark lines. Lots of grey, huge loft style doors, but it doesn't feel cold, actually all very clever and well thought out. This makes the hotel quite unique. It is huge, very maze like, but we got the hang of it quite quickly. The pools were lovely, cocktails good. Breakfast was OK, very busy, but did have everything you could wish for. Service was always smiling, friendly and courteous, but slightly chaotic at times! Perfect for a couple of days at the end of our Thailand adventure.

Just wow, we were swept off our feet for 11 nights at the Slate! We returned as a family of 3, a little over 10 years after we spent our honeymoon there. The decor, ambience, quiet architecture, beautiful aromas, music, food and location are all excellent however the stand out was the staff who went above and beyond and just seemed happy to be doing their work and helping guests. |We unfortunately encountered a bad storm when arriving that caused a power outage for 2 nights. The hotel did everything they could to make us comfortable and enjoy the start of our holiday, which was most appreciated.|We booked a D/buk family suite that was spacious & perfect for us. Our daughter loved the huge bath and having her own bed. Kids club was a huge hit - our daughter did most of the activities and made a few friends throughout the holiday. It gave us time to enjoy the adults pool and local massages. We also had a couples massage at Cocoon Spa which was 5 star.|We celebrated a milestone birthday at Black Ginger which was exquisite with lots of special touches. Breakfast offerings are fresh and vast so we enjoyed trying different things - the iced coffee was so delicious and refreshing. |We enjoyed a perfect mix of pool and beach time as well as a few trips around the island. Again, the staff did a great job and made everything easy. |We’re already dreaming of our next visit 💙

Wonderful hotel made even more wonderful by the staff who cannot do enough for you. We are currently on day 7 of our 11 day stay, and cannot fault the level of service. We chose the hotel to celebrate a special wedding anniversary and are so glad we did. We chose a pool suite, so have a plunge pool. The room is beautiful, only slight negative for me is half the pool is under cover so shaded, so doesn’t get the full benefit of the sun which I would have liked, but I can see the shaded area would be a plus point for many. So much seating outside, spoilt for choice. I can see some have mentioned the power outage after a particularly bad storm, and I’m glad to see the comments on how well it was handled, it really was dealt with professionally and the staff kept a smile on their face despite having very testing circumstances to deal with. We remained at the hotel despite the option being given to move, and we managed fine, power was restored within a couple of days and in the meantime they still managed to keep a restaurant and bar running. ||The mosquitoes are mentioned quite a lot in other reviews, and they are definitely an issue, which in tropical climates I think is a given. My husband reacted quite badly to them, we ended up speaking to reception who advised us of a very good pharmacist on the village road at the back of the hotel, and they were so helpful, it turned out he needed treatment and that was sorted straight away and thankfully that helped massively. Make sure you bring a lot of spray, but the hotel do provide it in your room, along with other things like the mosquito coils and more spray in the bars and restaurants. ||The food has been top quality, we arranged the chefs table for our anniversary and that was a fabulous evening, not a cheap option but for a special occasion definitely worth it, we were so spoilt. If you want to venture out for food there are plenty of options on the beach road.||All in all we have been blown away, I think if I were to return and wanted a pool I would probably book the pool villa room, but if you just want a cooling dunk in the water then a pool suite will be spot on. The staff are the making of this hotel, they are superb!

The Slate is in a great location, ten minutes from the airport on Nai Yang beach in North West Phuket. It is very handy if flying in late or if you need to leave early.|The grounds are huge but easily managed, either by walking or making use of the efficient buggy service. The Slate's gardens are superb, cared for by a team of able gardeners. The standout to us was the rows of bromeliads in varying colours.|We originally booked a Pearl Bed Suite but decided to upgrade to a room with a pool, which proved to be a good decision. Our early morning dips were a great way to start the day.|The Coqoon Spa is top class, with choice of oil and very high quality service and massages. |Several restaurants and bars are available, but we found the Tin Mine to be of consistently high quality and with reasonable prices. Daily breakfasts were also at the Tin Mine restaurant and were simply superb. There was a large variety to choose from and they served cappuccinos and hot chocolate in large mugs (their hot chocolates are the best!). Service was wonderful, especially from lovely Choong.|We dined one night at the Black Ginger restaurant and it was a very pleasant experience. Our meals were world class, the chef was delightful and service was excellent. To add a unique touch, entry to the restaurant was via a barge, propelled by rope pull across an exquisite pond.|Within a short walk of the resort is the Nai Yang village, with shops, cafes, restaurants and massage shops. The restaurants were cheaper but the quality was disappointing, so we would recommend dining at one of The Slate's restaurants.|Nai Yang beach is just a short walk away and the waves are gentle. The resort has two adults only pools and one family pool. We thoroughly enjoyed the adult pools, in particular the one with the Plumb Bob swim up bar, which we made regular use of.|The Bensley architecture was impressive, but we must say we were not impressed by the "industrial" decor throughout the resort. Some may like it, but it is not for us.|Overall, The Slate is a wonderful resort and we would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to rest and revitalise.

The slate was booked for me as an overnight stay to end an 11 week tour. It was the perfect hotel to end my weeks exploring south east Asia.|The hotel is impressive to walk into and the staff are kind and attentive.|I was greeted with a lotus flower for my wrist a delicious drink and much needed cool flannel.|I was taken to my room which was impressive both for its size, beautiful decor and the smell of the oil burning in the burner. |The oil burning smelt gorgeousxand all the shower products, body cream and mosquito spray are all the hotels own brand name with natural oils. I forgot yo buy some oil fir burning, but did purchase other products.|There were 2 balconies, a large roll top bath alongside a beautiful walk in shower. Very tasteful and I will use some of the interior deco ideas at home.|The bedding is beautiful quality and the bed was very comfortable. Such a shame it was just one night.|I went ot and came back to find my curtains shut, mosquito coil burning which made sitting on the balcony so pleasant.|I used the restaurant, the service was excellent as was the food. The wine was so nice after many weeks of none whilst touring. Welcome treat for my return home. The staff are just so beautiful, they go the extra mile.|Breakfast is superb, there is something fir everyone. The choices of food are incredible . The fruit choices are unlimited and healthy choices are easily made. |I walked around the grounds but dud not have the opportunity to use all the facilities.|It was an incredible experience and made more special by such lovely staff.|Thank you.

We have just finished our week long stay here, and it really did surpass expectation’s. We booked through the website and had many items included with the stay such as a free upgrade, free 3-course meal, and free airport transfer - really recommend doing it this way. ||The breakfast was delicious, provided everything we needed. A special shoutout is to Katty who was always friendly and a delight to be around. There were more amazing staff but I didn’t manage to get their names! ||If I had to criticise this place, it would only be in regard to mosquitos. Whilst there definitely weren’t as many as we thought there would be, it was definitely on the back of our minds for a lot of the time. However, I believe most precautions are being done. This includes lighting a coil in the evenings in the bedroom, and other measures. ||Great week here, would really recommend it. Plus, it is right next to a beach!! Would recommend going to Sea almond in the evenings, it is approx half the cost of the hotel restaurant.

I was here as part of a wedding party for 7 nights, delighted with the couple's choice of venue! Couldn't think of a more gorgeous setting for the event. This is a hidden paradise, conveniently close to the airport, beach, and national parks. The facilities are superb with an even more amazing staff, everyone went above and beyond to be very kind and helpful at every encounter. From our warm welcome, to the delicious food, well kept grounds, and beautifully designed rooms everything was top. There is a lot more I could elaborate on but mostly want to give a big thank you to everyone at the Slate for a wonderful experience 🙏 Would definitely recommend!

Wonderful place to start or finish (or both) a trip to Phuket. Close to the airport but still set in a nice little town on the beach with no airport noise in the resort. Great service, amazing resort facilities, decent kids club for a three and seven year old.
