We tucked in here for date night after a movie to try everything we possibly could. I definitely wasn't disappointed, but there were highs and lows. And most of the highs came with lows.
The highs and lows...
The deviled eggs. The chorizo on top was epic. It made that egg sing. Maybe one of the best eggs I have ever eaten. Unfortunately the egg was tiny and all the weight of the filling and toppings made the egg kinda collapse and end up all over my hand. Maybe a bigger egg would solve this problem for 25 cents a dozen, and at three dollars per half egg, they can afford it.
The charcuterie plate. The salami was great. Again, ridiculously tasty... like over the top, the pickled celery was really good and subtle, pickled red onions were good. Mustard nice, crostini nice, olives nice. The low, it's salami on a plate. When I hear charcuterie I want something cool. And mildly complex at least. This didn't wow me at all.
The warm olives. Good.
The squash dish. All around great. No complaints. Probably the best thing of the night. Elegant and tasty. The flavors went so well together and the proportions of ingredients and dressing was perfect.
The lamb stew. Very tasty. The bread was simple and rustic. The only downfalls were that the chickpeas taste very canned, and the broth was a little watery. But I am being very critical of this dish. It was good but at the price they charge for soup, it should be perfect.
Greek fries add lamb. Another winner. The fries themselves were amazing. The toppings too. I would have this, the eggs, and the squash dish again for sure. And they may be worth a trip specifically for them.
The menu. I don't like it at all layout-wise. It's terrible. One color, hard to read, too many pages, felt like it was going to fall apart in my hand, and made by a preschooler. The wine selection is pretty bad too. By the glass there's three options for red. The only varietal I vaguely recognized tasted like a barnyard. The other two were ok. I get that you're trying to be a tapas place and have regional wines, but maybe a Malbec or a Shiraz by the glass would be a nice addition. Cocktails were good. I sent the French cider back because it tastes like rotten apples. Bloody Mary needed saltiness but good.
The space and the place. It's cool and "hip" and that's what they're obviously trying to be so it works. It made me happy being in there and I had a great time. The parts I didn't like were the strange ordering from the bar food and drinks and then not having any service at the tables. Yet there were two bartenders and one maybe food runner? Or other bartender? I don't know, maybe it's just me but it looks like a place where one bartender could make drinks and one person could cocktail and clear plates. For 140$ for two people I would like some better service and there is lots of places around I can get that. The last con was that big door in the front. When it opens the whole place shivers. It was a cold wet night as usual and every time that enormous door opened everyone was cold.
The place has a lot going for it and lots of high points, way more than lows. I hope they do well. I felt strange and unwelcome from staff and confused when I went in, as to what to do and how to order. Like it was a click that I wasn't a part of. Chances are very good I will not be back but there is some great things coming over the pass and the bar top here. Maybe I'll try back in a year, till then, salud.
