The Best Fish and Chips on the Oregon Coast | Eater Portland

"A narrow but tidy hole-in-the-wall with galvanized tin walls in the crowded stretch of shops in Depoe Bay, the Sticks has a tightly tuned and well-executed menu of fried goodies and ice cream. The counter-service restaurant features several fish and chips baskets — salmon, halibut, cod, and shrimp beer-battered with local Rogue ale and fried to an amber bronze. The fries are thin and the tartar sauce is one of several possible dips. For an alternative, opt for a chicken or shrimp po’ boy sandwich. And even if you’re filled with fries, order at least one potato tornado on a stick. The spiralized, seasoned, bread-crumbed marvel should be the town’s signature dish." - Emily Teel

15 Fish and Chips Spots Worth Their Salt on the Oregon Coast

"A narrow but tidy, casual hole-in-the-wall spot with galvanized tin walls in the crowded stretch of shops in Depoe Bay, The Sticks has a tightly tuned and well-executed menu of fried goodies. These include fried cod on a stick and several fish and chips baskets — salmon, halibut, cod, and shrimp ale-battered and fried to perfection. The fries are chubby and the tartar sauce is house-made. For an alternative, opt for a chicken or shrimp po’ boy sandwich. And even if you’re filled with fries, order at least one potato tornado on a stick. The spiralized, seasoned, bread-crumbed marvel should be the town’s signature dish." - Jennifer Burns Bright

Google
Very pleasant restaurant. Jimmy and A.J. are just as welcoming as any hometown restaurant can be. We ordered the clam chowder and cod fish and chip. Both are amazing. The cod is super fresh and the chowder is creamy with great savory flavors . I highly recommend this eatery as it is the absolute best. The prices are very reasonable too.

Google
chowder is amazing. smoked yummy flavor. fish n chips were made fresh. the potato tornado was cool looking but tastes like potato chips. not my fav. the wall decor was cool but not much it terms of atmosphere.

Michael E.

Google
Came across this hole in the wall place on FB feed. Decided to try it out with the family . We got over there at opening time and ordered and sat inside this lil place. The person at the front part was absolutely amazing 👏. I told him it was our first time and he genuinely guided us through. I ordered the Cod po boy sandwich and the wife ordered salmon and last both kids had chicken strip n frys .there food was absolutely amazing and hands down best so far in depo bay. THE FOOD PORTION WAS HUGE lots of food for a small price.

Amber H.

Google
Great food and great customer service :) Best chowder by far! The fry sauce, hot sauce, and tarter are all homemade and they are delicious.

Google
Had a cup of chowder while the kids had an ice cream. The chowder was fantastic. Great prices and quick service. An unassuming spot. I saw the fish and chips and sandwiches being served to another guest and I will be back give them a try!

Katie K.

Google
Small place but the food was DELICIOUS!!! Loved the fresh fried fish! Large portions of the fish and chips, we could've split one order.

Marc O.

Google
Huge portions served hot. The sauces appear to be hand made—the tartar sauce is unique and also tasty. Enormous quantities of fries. A couple could split this easily. For $15 it’s a super economical meal. If you like a heavy beer batter like I do, this is a great spot!

James L.

Google
The Sticks Restaurant completely impressed me! The clam chowder was incredibly delicious, easily some of the best I've ever had. It was creamy, flavorful, and packed with clams. On top of that, the portions were wonderfully generous for all the food items. It's fantastic to find a place that offers such high quality and great value. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
The food is so good that we came back the next day! Superb clam chowder with a delicious special ingredient. (Is it chorizo?) We ordered all the fish baskets, and the halibut and cod tied for first with the shrimp and salmon a close second and third. The tartar sauce was heavy on the dill (my favorite). The batter and crunch on the fish was sublime with the fish cooked to perfection. The chips were good too! The potato on a stick was a bit well done, but my husband loved it. And we can't possibly forget get to mention their fabulous, helpful, and friendly staff. There is a simple, self-serve eating area, but we preferred to take our meal to go (including Oregon-made ice cream) and dine alfresco by the ocean.

Yelp
Enjoyed the fish and chips. Halibut $22 Cod $16 Shrimp $18 Fish on a Stick $7 Bowl of Chowder $8 The fish/shrimp portions and breading were ok. You get a lot of fries. They are good and so is the fry sauce... but 4 of us couldn't finish 3 orders. The smoky clam chowder was meh. No identifiable clam chunks and the paprika and or cumin was overwhelming. I'd pass on that.
google avatar

Jo A.

Yelp
First off, their staff is incredibly friendly and kind! You felt welcomed as soon as you came in, with friendly small talk and a smile. We honestly walked in looking for ice cream, when the smells hit us we decided to sit down for lunch. They only had a couple booths, but they were clean and there was not a lot of people inside. As a person who doesn't like fish, I was so so happy that there was no fishy smells despite having it on their menu. We sat down, filled our drink cups at the self serve fountain, and used their incredibly clean restroom. We quickly got our food and we're in awe of the size of the chicken tenders! We honestly could have shared a meal. They were hot and fresh, with just the right amount of breading and great fries. They also had a sauce they gave us, I don't remember what they called it but if you're from Utah, it was definitely fry sauce! Win-win for me.

Carol S.

Yelp
the fish & chips are excellent. I just wish they would be open a bit earlier and more days of the week. they are now open Friday through Monday. I usually have the cod it is great with the malt vinegar. The potato on a stick is too well done and slaty. it is more like potato chips. The people are very pleasant and the service was excellent.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Some of the best fish and chips I've had! Super crispy and I love the smaller size. The fries are great too Would be happy to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a perfect lunch stop for our day of whale watching! We shared the shrimp po boy and a cup of clam chowder. The sauces that came with the shrimp po boy were awesome -- the bread was crispy and delicious - and the shrimp were fried to perfection! Everything was delicious! Even the fries were crispy and hot - and a nice compliment to the sandwich! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
After I got done with a whale watching tour, I was walking around looking for a place to get food and came across The Sticks. It looked super welcoming with an open door, nice decor and a friendly dude up front. We went with the shrimp po boy and the fish and chips. I wasn't expecting the portions to be that big but can't complain. The po boy was everything I hoped for and brought me back to my time in NOLA. Full of flavor and a nice crunch; the sauce in the side was absolutely amazing and had a great amount of heat. Fries crispy, warm and soft. The fish was breaded absolutely perfect and oh so flaky. Just writing this post makes me want to go back and order something else.

Yelp
While eating at The Sticks Restaurant, we did not have a good experience there. It started when we were asked to leave a gratuity when we ordered. I did not particularly appreciate going a compensation when we hadn't even been seated or given a "Glass" of water. Moments later, we were told by the cashier that if we wanted water, we could get it from the soda machine in the cardboard cups next to it. So, we served ourselves. We both ordered Chowder, one cup, and one bowl. As you can see in the attached photo, they came in cardboard cups. The larger one is their bowl. I asked the waitress, are you serious? That's not more than an ounce or two more than the cup! A little later, our meals were delivered in cardboard to-go containers. I commented on them; how did they know that we might need a container to go ahead of time? I knew then that this was not my expatriation of going to a restaurant and not a take-out place. We were never asked if we would like to dine in or get take-out. Eating in, I fully expected to have standard plates, silverware, etc. Unfortunately, the fish-n-chips were overcooked in well-used oil. As you can see in the photos, the Fish and the Frys were dark, not light, and fluffy, as expected. We attempted to eat the food, but both of us could not finish it as the flavor was not good either. The owner came out to see how everything was when she saw that we had stopped eating. She was also the cook, as it turned out. I, with respect, told her that we were not pleased with the food, the take-out containers and forks/knives, glasses of water, and the greatly under-sized bowl of Chowder. She was sorry to hear all this and offered me an ice cream cone to please me. She did later offer not to charge me for the meals, but I told her thanks, but I came in here intending to pay for my dinner, and I will. We explained that we had expected to be served with regular restaurant plating and silverware. At the Cash-register, we should have been informed that this would be served as a Take-Out! When we arrived in Depot Bay, we parked; we walked down the street to The Spick Restaurant, passing several other restaurants; a couple had signs that their food was Take-Out. I am leaving a slightly higher review than I should have because she did attempt to please me and make it right. As a fell business owner, I would like to see her maybe reevaluate how she is doing business without adequately informing their customers up front that there will be no service and it will be served as Take-Out. With a garbage can next to our table, we also bused our dirty containers as we left.

Yelp
Cute interior, clean, and workers are really kind. The chef came from the back and proudly told us what the Potato Tornado was and it looked amazing. We stopped for chowder; they have their own spin on it. They have a case of drinks, fountain drinks, and ice cream.

Yelp
The best fried shrimp I've ever tasted! Everything was fried fresh to order and absolutely delicious. Really nice folks running the place too. This small local joint is truly a hidden gem!
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Wow! This was some of the best fries and fried seafood I've ever had. Everything was made fresh so all plates came out piping hot and crispy. Love that the seafood was beer battered rather than breadcrumb like at some places. The seafood itself was also VERY fresh. Shrimps were bouncy. Cods were flaky! Every plate also came with cocktail, tartar, and fry sauces that went amazingly with the food. The chowder was decent. Creamy and hot but there was mainly potato. A super unassuming spot with friendly staffs. Inside there are a few booth seatings. What a hidden gem!

Bill E.

Yelp
Fantastic Fish & Chips! Huge portions cooked to order! Will definitely be back!! Good prices - great service!
google avatar

Vicki F.

Yelp
Stopped in here for some take out fish and chips and clam chowder. The portions were plentiful, the fries twice fried, hot and delicious. The fish was fresh but the batter a bit chewy and on the greasy side. Still, for the price you can beat the portions.

Yelp
We are so excited we stopped here on the way to Otter Rock. A small little restaurant off the Oregon Coast Highway in Depoe Bay. We had the cod fish and chips, shrimp po boy, and a chip of the chowder. *This review is for the Shrimp Po Boy Probably the best shrimp po boy I've ever had. Perfectly fried crispy shrimp. Excellent bread with crisp crunchy exterior toast with a fluffy interior stuffed with a healthy amount of shrimp and a side of hot sauce to dip it all in. The fries were not overly battered. Everything was cooked right when we ordered and tasted fresh. It's a blessing and a curse The Sticks isn't closer to me!

Yelp
Great prices and selections , love the Potato Tornado was delicious and creative and great price ! Our Cod and Chips were over cooked and when we spoke up about the "cook" called me a foil name for just pointing out overcooked so between the overcooked and the foul mouth cook a big no for a return visit . Don't be in customer service if you can't keep your mouth clean very unprofessional
google avatar

Yelp
We had the chowder, which was fantastic & the halibut & chips. Both were perfectly prepared & tasted so fresh. The young lady who took our order & brought our food was lovely & a pleasure to speak with. One person in our party had the ice cream & said it was delish! We will return!

John O.

Yelp
The potato tornado is the big, fun draw. It doesn't disappoint. My son wanted to stop here on his birthday just to grab one. It is crispy like a thick chip with the right amount of Parmesan and salt. To combo it with a fried fish was nice!

George B.

Yelp
Some of the oiliest, soggiest sad bits of cod I've ever had. They need to stop serving fish and chips. They're definitely buying frozen off a truck and never changing the oil in that fryer. They get a star because the fries weren't a total fail and they serve Tilamook ice cream. Do better guys.
google avatar

Abby J.

Yelp
Stopped by The Sticks while exploring Depoe Bay for the first time and wow just amazing! We stopped by for some fish and sticks with some friends which were incredible. We got an order of the Halibut and the Cod which were both great but the Halibut was outstanding! The service was pretty fast for a busy spot. And the cherry on top was the wonderful view we got enjoy while eating! Looking forward to visiting again :)
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
The owners are very nice people and the restaurant sits right by the water. The menu is mostly all fried and they serve ice cream. The owner is the cook and makes his own fry sauce...pretty good. Thick steak fries seasoned well. Good fish and shrimp.
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
The best fish and chips in Depoe Bay!! This place was recommended to us multiple times and within good reason! Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It's a pretty small spot but it still gives off great vibes.
google avatar

Hannah R.

Yelp
Pros: Incredibly accommodating for a food allergy I had. I called ahead and let them know and they were so kind when we got in. Fish was really good. pieces were smaller but there were more of them. tarter sauce was really good. French fries were amazing. Clean restroom. Con: no cole slaw.

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Popped in for the halibut and chips which is my "must have" when I visit the coast. Sticks did not disappoint with the halibut! Delicious! The French fries were a little cold but still good. Nice beer selection to top off my craving!! Wish I'd had room for ice cream!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is must try when in Depoe Bay, OR. Like any fish and chips you purchase, it's all about freshness of the fish. Rule number one, rule number two, eat asap.. don't pick it up and take it on a 5 mile hike then take it home and expect to not taste like a wet sponge. I personally love their Cod fish over the other choices, to me it has much more flavor, especially at the Oregon coast. The chips or "freedom fries" are really good here, again don't leave them sitting too long before jammin them in your grill. The price is what the market can bear, it is what it is, but this can easily be shared. I do also want to mention the clam chowder, I think it has turmeric in it? but it was actually really good, different, but a pleasant surprise. All and all, yes I would return when in Depoe Bay. I would order the fish and chips for two and two clam chowders with bread and walk across the street and watch the whales.. awww perfect day awaits you.

Yelp
Second visit. Fresh cod fish and chips with a side order of shrimp. Generous portions. The fish was beer battered and friend until golden brown. The chips were like little plank fries: crispy and salty. The shrimp was also battered and fried to perfection. I'd love to have the recipes for their tarter sauce and fry sauce: punch you in the nose flavor! The counter lady was very friendly and made sure to toss several different condiment packets into the 'to go sack'. Casual ambiance, which is perfect in a little fishing village like Dopey Bay. The ice cream counter offers a nice variety of flavors, plus many options for the cones from kid sized to large double scoops!--I was in a hurry, but a little cone is definitely on my radar!! (Also: neither time that I have been there did the staff ask for a gratuity at any time--there is a tip jar by the register--) All in all: a favorite new fish and chips palace!

Yelp
Very clean restaurant. It was a cold, rainy Monday at 3pm and the place was pretty empty which was nice. Our food came out fast and hot! Everything was great, crispiest fries I think I've ever had. I've never been a fan of tartar sauce but theirs was really good! We all got plenty of fries but I only had like 6 small pieces of cod. Not the best deal for $14. My only real complaint was that my cod was really greasy. I didn't notice my friends meals being overly greasy, just the cod. Now, I have sort of a steel gut lol so I don't often get stomach aches from fried foods. But wow...later in the night I had some insane acid reflux and stomach pains. But this place was good enough that I would still go back, I just might skip the cod next time... EDIT: Well, after spending most of the night in the bathroom, I'm concerned that maybe they're using old oil or something? I don't think it was intense enough to have been food poisoning but something did not sit right with me. It's weird to me because I've never had this bad of a reaction to greasy food so it must have been VERY greasy is all I can think. Like I said, I'll probably try them again sometime and just get chowder or something.

Christopher J.

Yelp
Overcook burnt food. No chowder even though they just opened for there 4 days. Big mistake. We drove 70 mile for Fish. Major bummer.
google avatar

Keely M.

Yelp
This seafood restaurant has me in awe! Always looking to try out a new place and haven't made a trip to the coast in quite some time so wanted to get out of the normal places I have and let me tell you, this was SO WORTH IT! Seriously!!!! If you're debating on trying it out, the answer is YES, DO IT! You will not regret it! Cashier / server was very kind and answered any questions we had promptly. Got the shrimp PO boy, halibut and chips and splurged on a potato tornado. The "chips" are hands down the best fries I have had. They are clearly made in house with house made seasons and they are so delicious! The potato tornado had the perfect seasoning with a slight crunch and was so unbelievably tasty. The breading on the shrimp and halibut was phenomenal. Not thick and battered, but more like a light breading. Didn't feel overly greasy to where you got a belly ache immediately after either. The hot sauce came on the side or directly on top of the po boy, but not being a huge spice lover, I got mine on the side. Did a little taste test before diving all the way into it, and it was like a slightly spicier Tabasco, but very tolerable and super flavorful! I don't think you could go wrong with any item here, definitely a must try if you're in the area!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Great little place. Very good food. I had the chowder which is not your run-of-the-mill that is served everywhere, here it has more flavor. The the fish&chips were fabulous and plenty. The pretty young lady running the place was very attentive with a wonderful disposition. I'll be back. Oh yeah, there's a huge amount of fries with my meal. Thank you!
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
A MUST whenever we stay in Lincoln City. Worth the drive for the wave watching and ALWAYS delicious food. They have a signature clam chowder which is smoky, has a floating pat of butter ... make sure you try it with their house made hot sauce. We got the cod fish & chips ... perfectly battered and generous potions. Our daughter got the chicken strips and she loved it. Came with 3 hand sized chicken pieces which were lightly breaded. The fries are wonderfully crisp ... try with house made fry sauce. You can't do wrong on anything on the menu. They have a kids menu. Large selection of non alcoholic beverages. If you have any room they also have a great selection of Tillamook ice cream
google avatar

Armen S.

Yelp
This is a little place right along the main highway in Depoe Bay. The fish and chips are delicious! We ate there 3 times in 3 days! Yes, we were a little obsessed. Generous portions. The fish is served in smaller chunks than usual, which makes it crispier. We tried both the halibut and cod. Even though the cod is the cheaper fish, we both preferred it. The fries are so good - crispy and dark brown, and nicely seasoned. They also have a basic salad that you can order to accompany fish pieces on a stick, if the fries aren't your thing. They also have Tillamook ice cream, but we were too full from the fish and chips. It looked great though. Order at the counter. There are a few tables inside, or take it out to eat at a bench along the road or overlooking the bay. Nice people. They haven't been open long. Check them out if you're in Depoe Bay!
google avatar

Heidi H.

Yelp
I love Fish & Chips, but I especially love Halibut when it's cooked right. For $19 I got a healthy portion of fish & chips. It's lightly battered & deep fried to perfection. It was light & crisp & the batter stayed on the fish. It wasn't greasy. They fish was dense, thick cuts which I prefer to a thin piece of halibut. It might be the best Halibut Fish & Chips that I've eaten on the Oregon coast. The homemade tarter sauce was a delicious accompaniment with a squeeze of fresh lemon too. Oh man, I didn't want my last bite to end. I'm definitely going to be a repeat customer.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
Halibut fish and chips was awesome. Fresh, hot, juicy and the fries were seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. I would definitely recommend this place. (Sorry I inhaled my lunch before I got a pic )

Jacob R.

Yelp
I was grossly overcharged for a small portion of food. The staff there seemed over it and acted like they were above the service industry. Save your money and go to Moe's instead.

Jen W.

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips. Fresh and hot, we'll seasoned. Very friendly service and located right on the coast. Perfect stop while you're browsing the shops of Depoe Bay.
google avatar

James F.

Yelp
The shrimp Po'boy was delicious and it was a huge portion between the sandwich and the fries. The chicken strips portion was huge. We have a meal for tomorrow also. Might be a small place but they deliver in flavor and just being awesome!
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Simply okay. The fish was fried well, it was not seasoned in the least. The fries were soggy. The potato on a stick thibg was either over-fried or old, not sure which but it also severely lacked salt. I'd give it another try, the staff was friendly!
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Visited here 3 August. Fish on a stick was yummy. The Tornados was a whole other story. It was like eating burnt potato chips. When this was brought to the attention of the person working we were met with "I can give you your money back but this is how we make them. They aren't burnt, it's just a dark spot on the potato. And, I put them in for as long as the timer said. I can over look poorly made food if I'm not made to feel like I'm a bother or complaining. The employee attitude is a real turn off here. I'll bypass them in the future.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
Among the best chowders on the Oregon Coast! We drove the extra distance just to have it again. Try it with their homemade hot sauce. The cod fish and chips is also terrific. It's a small place but definitely the first choice in Depoe Bay.

Edith B.

Yelp
Came out to otter rock yesterday morning. Was craving fish and chips. They have the best fries! Eating them this morning and they're still crispy :) Definitely coming back to try other items. I had the shrimp sandwich my partner had the cod and chips. Careful tho food can be extra crispy my partner cut top of his mouth, had to tell him to slow down lol. Service is great! Thank you!

Stephanie A.

Yelp
The great reviews brought us in, and the fish and chips were surely delicious! Good amount of batter, flakey fish, chunky fries. We were surprised and frustrated that not one of the 3 people working (including the chef) were wearing masks, even during the current mask mandate. Picked up our food as fast as possible, minimizing our time inside, and went to eat it elsewhere.
google avatar

Rob T.

Yelp
This place is the best example of a "hole in the wall" joint turning out to be incredible. We got the fish and chips as well as a shrimp po boy sandwich. By far the best po boy I've ever had. The batter they use for the fish and shrimp was unreal and the amount of fries we got with each thing was crazy. In addition to both food items being amazing, even the sauces included with both were stupid good. The fry sauce and tarter sauce were great and the po boy hot sauce was incredible. Loved this place!

Fred D.

Yelp
Good food, good service. It's not a luxury sit down, and they only have a few inside tabbut the food is good and they give plenty. We have been here a couple times during our stay. We had ice cream one day and then fish and chips a couple different days. The fish comes in small chunks, easy to divide up and they give you a massive amount of fries. Last time we got the skinny fries and they were great. These were excellent too.

Ashley F.

Yelp
Super yummy, and both guys working very friendly. Clean establishment. Better than Mo's!!! Thanks guys!
google avatar

Pam B.

Yelp
The clam chowder was the best I have had ever and I am a big chowder fan. The halibut fish and chips was amazing- you will not be disappointed! We saw a potato tornado and will definitely be getting one next time!!!! The staff was extremely friendly!

Julie R.

Yelp
Great new seafood spot right in the heart of Depoe Bay! Best halibut fish and chips on the coast! Excellent fries and the homemade tarter and fry sauces are delicious! Small and quaint with very friendly service! A must try on your next visit and I will definitely be back!

Linda J.

Yelp
The girl at the counter wasn't friendly and didn't say thank you for an $87 dollar lunch order. The Halibut fish and chips was good and the fountain pop was really good. They also serve Tillamook ice cream

Allison L.

Yelp
I was hoping for the best fish and chips but what I got was grease on top of grease. Fish had no flavor. I only gave 2 stars because they're fries were ok and fry sauce was good. 0 stars for the fish.

Teri Y.

Yelp
After reading the glowing reviews of other menu items I wish I had ordered anything other than the chowder. The chowder was orangeish in color and had a very unusual flavor. I thought it was cumin, my granddaughter thought curry. Whatever it was did not make for a good chowder. It would be helpful if they put a brief description on their menu so you know it's not a classic clam chowder.
