18 Standout French Restaurants in Houston

"When enthralled in the hustle and bustle of Downtown but seeking some French sustenance, head to Ben Berg’s newest all-day cafe. The Texas Tower restaurant keeps it simple yet chic, starting with its menu of grab-and-go pastries, breakfast plates like Belgium buttermilk waffles, and lemon chia seed parfaits. The day evolves into lunch with salads and sandwiches, and sharable dinner dishes like lamb meatballs, honey-roasted chicken breast, and duck fat-roasted potatoes." - Brittany Britto Garley, Sean Hekmat

Ben Berg Opens Turner’s Cut Steakhouse and the Sylvie in Houston | Eater Houston

"Housed in Downtown’s 47-story Texas Tower, the Sylvie presents itself as an all-day cafe and bar that Berg calls the "most beautiful all-day cafe and bar in the city," and I found it to deliver a full-day program from grab-and-go pastries and plated breakfasts (avocado tartines, Belgian buttermilk waffles, lemon chia seed parfaits) to a full-service coffee bar, lunchtime salads, sandwiches and gourmet pizzas from a glass mosaic oven, and dinners like lamb meatballs and honey-roasted chicken breast with sides such as duck fat-roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The dining room, which seats about 85 across a bistro bar and dining area, is anchored by an illuminated tree-like sculpture that stretches floor to ceiling and uses a palette of brass, rust, and rose tones to evoke the restaurant’s name roots (French Sylvia/Latin for forest)." - Brittany Britto Garley

I love this place. Beautiful space with a circular bar. Also has lovely chairs & tables for groups. All-day happy hour Mondays & Fridays. I enjoy popping in straight after work and clearly they do a lot of lunch business. Mikayla at the bar is wonderful! She mixes cocktails very nicely and is attentive. They also have a lot of wine to choose from. I have had the brussel sprouts and potatoes dishes - both delish. Bonus that I always manage to find free street parking nearby, and it's so convenient for pre-concert snacking (across the street from Jones hall).

Google
this is definitely a hidden gem here in houston! we were here for 2 days and after desperately looking for a delicious espresso martini we stumbled across this place and were not disappointed! Our bartender Mikala was amazing! She was so sweet, offered great recommendations and even better service! It was so good we came back for lunch before heading to the airport! I 100% recommend this place! Espresso Martini 10/10 & Sausage Fennel Ricotta Pizza 10/10!

Our eyes were caught by the shop beautiful architect as view from outside, from the street. We stopped by for a quick breakfast. The pricing here was surprisingly cheaper than we expected as the decorations and locations. Our drinks were below $5 and our breakfast was below $10. I was never expecting that price when i came in. The staffs were extremely friendly and very patient. It would be perfect if their Matcha latte were better, but it’s forgiving since it’s not a stable on their menu. The parking in the building was pricier than the drink and croissant 🥐 combined. It’s just the most convenient parking to get to the shop.

I loved the atmosphere and architecture of this place! Very modern, elegant, and airy with great views of the exterior. Bartender was great and made good drinks! This would be a great regular spot!

Google
I’ve only had the lunch specials—they’re a great deal. Normally a soup skeptic but the soups continue to be delicious. **10/28 UPDATE**went back and tried a wrap for the special. What you see is the “half” a wrap you get. I haven’t touched it in the photo. Potato soup was delicious. But because the wrap is a nub it was mainly tortilla shell. That plus the soup is whole combo–I paid extra for chips.

Google
Mikala was our bartender and as someone visiting from Chicago, got to say this is the best espresso martini I’ve ever had. She was very attentive and made us feel very at home. We had visited 5 other establishments prior and ended at The Sylvie and decided to stay for the rest of our night. Genuinely great service and even better experience. If coming to visit, make sure to ask for her and you WILL be getting an unforgettable time.

LOVED my experience. Not only is it so cute here, the service we received was amazing!! We celebrated my friend’s birthday & he even went to write her name on the plate!! How sweet We got the pizza & coffee, it was good!

Google
What a polarizing place. Possibly one of the fanciest coffee spots in Houston with stunning design. Also very friendly staff. But holy cow… how bad can the food be? Tasteless and flavorless - both, salads and pastries. Also zero branding - coffee served in plastic illy cups. Would not recommend to come here unless you need nice pictures

Yelp
This bar/deli is in a beautiful new building downtown. It's got a bright and chic vibe. Live to mid century modern feel and light wood worked circle shape. Heavy and comfy chairs and clean fresh tables and decor. I had a bees knees and espresso martini after a holiday work event and the drinks were great. Service was a tad pokey but also only had one or two people working mid afternoon. Would recommend

Yelp
I have visited a few times, I've even taken my kids for a quick weekend lunch. Absolutely gorgeous place. Easy parking is available all around the building on the street. It's currently less than $2 an hour for metered parking, and free at night and on the weekends. Espresso Martinis are so good! They even have an espresso mexitini that subs reposado tequila for the normal vodka. That's as close to coffee as I can get lol! Pizzas are delicious and fresh. Croissant was super hard that I received on my first visit. I couldn't even cut it, I had to send it back. Turkey sandwich was pretty good and came toasted with grill lines on the bread. Menu is very deli-like, so think salads, sandwiches, etc. Great girls working at the bar, they're super helpful and make quick drinks. I usually choose to sit at the bar when I visit, but I will grab a table when with my kids. Awesome views from any seat. I always have to ask for the food menu when sitting at the bar, just a heads up. They also offer grab & go options, with a variety of coffee, teas and pastries. Good luck with a croissant lol :) Good spot to do some work, grab a light bite, or visit for a drink after work. No crowd is the best part. Food 7 Service 6 Ambiance 9

Yelp
I love this place as a coffee shop. The aesthetic is so pleasing and it's not loud in there like many other coffee shops not a lot of food options, but enough to get you by. I have had the pizza and a sandwich and enjoyed both the staff is friendly and very helpful as well.

Yelp
The powers of social media brought me here, but unfortunately the experience was underwhelming. On a positive note, the interior is very beautiful and light, making it a great spot for a lunch meeting or coffee date. However, the food and coffee were extremely disappointing. I ordered the recommended cranberry turkey sandwich, but it was extremely dry and tasteless. I also had a matcha latte which was not high quality and also surprisingly tasteless. I would come back for the aesthetics but not for the food or drink.

Yelp
Hopefully it's just finding its footing, but the food is mediocre and doesn't seem like the price point or ambiance aligns with eating out of to-go dishes at the tables. Hopefully they can elevate with a good happy hour and light bites vs the grab-n-go options that are more akin to an upscale gas station.

Yelp
So excited to have this offer in Texas Tower. Incredible ambiance and great service. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've been to The Sylvie twice now and I really enjoy the ambiance of the cafe. I've tried the margherita pizza and that was very delicious. I will definitely try that again. Today I ordered the Panzanella from the salads section. I read the ingredients and decided, "Yes, that all sounds good!". Much to my surprise, this salad does not come with lettuce. It's just tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions and a few pieces of basil. That's it! This is not my idea of a salad. When people think of salads, they think lettuce of some sort. Please fix the menu selections ASAP!

Yelp
I stopped by on a Wednesday after work since it is located in my building. It was during happy hour (although they do not offer any sort of happy hour menu), and it was busy and filled with other patrons who had just left work such as myself. The bar was huge and circular, but I could not locate a vacant seat so I went up to the front where I assumed orders were taken. There were about six people total working around the bar- three servers, two people making the food, and only ONE bartender. How is there only ONE person who can make drinks at a bar? Anyway, I ended up standing at the front for a good 10 minutes until one of the servers even acknowledged me. The gentleman walked over and handed me a number and asked what I wanted. I asked for an Old Fashioned. Immediately the server got confused and panicked out as it seem that I deviated from their signature cocktail menu. He went to go ask one of the other waiters who then came and told him to hit the "Makers" key in the system. I asked if I could have my choice of bourbon and he wasn't sure, so I left it. The Old Fashioned was $21 and I didn't even get my choice of bourbon. I checked out, took my number and took a seat at a table right in front of where the solo bartender was making drinks. I sat and watched as the three servers ran and served any drinks and food that came out. I assumed that with only one bartender and a crowd at this time of day, I wouldn't receive my drink right away. However, after waiting 20 MINUTES, I got impatient. I saw the bartender step away, so I decided to go back up to the front with the number. Once again the same gentleman who rang me up came around after 5 minutes and asked what I wanted. I had to remind him I had not gotten my drink. He asked me what my order was. When I told him, he went back over the the bar tender who was back to serving people who were sitting at the bar, and he pointed him to a drink that had been sitting at the bar. He grabbed that and brought it to me. So after waiting 25 minutes, I finally got my Old Fashioned that I paid $21 (before tip) for without my choice of bourbon, that I had to personally get up and retrieve myself. It's such a pretty place that has so much potential, but terrible service. For starters, they should maybe utilize the numbers that they hand us, so they don't lose or forget about people waiting. They never even asked me or took the number even after I got my drink. Another area of improvement would be to add at least one other bartender, especially since the entire concept is a a bar. And a happy hour menu would be nice, especially when they are prone to a crowd of office goers getting off of work.

Yelp
Attractive facility & nice to have it Downtown, but it definitely needs some menu "tweaking" to succeed long term. $6 croissants, $4 muffins & $12 breakfast sandwiches will certainly need adjustment since other food item pricing is far more acceptable. Sylvie offers very nice small pizzas, but management totally missed the mark by pricing the least expensive bottle of white wine at $57 or red at $60 to accompany $11-13 pizzas. $70-80 for a "small" pizza & bottle of what is house wine at other places will not create the needed business volume. Place gives off a confusing atmosphere. Is it an upscale coffee shop, a grab & go take out, or a sit-down eat-in casual spot? After several visits we still can't decide. Service has always been pleasant & we wish them success though.

Yelp
I have eaten here twice as it is in my building. Sadly, this is just not good food. I had high hopes because we needed something in the building. I had a sandwich the first time. the bread was gummy/chewy and tough. The roasted chicken was dry and flavorless. I had a chicken caesar the next time. the lettuce was wilted, old and turning brown. the dressing portion in the little cup was not enough to dress even half the salad, but it didn't matter in the end since the lettuce was inedible. the chicken was edible, but tough, dry and mealy. really quite disappointing.
