"Tipsy Alchemist is one of those cocktail bars that features lots of smoke and liquid nitrogen, and half of the drinks come served in quirky vessels like lightbulbs and disco balls. It’s gimmicky and fun, and if you’re willing to shell out a few dollars more than the average price of a cocktail on Rainey Street, you’ll end up with some pretty solid drinks and a good time. It’s also one of the few spots in town where you can sit on a second-story patio and look out over the street below." - raphael brion, nicolai mccrary

Was a Thursday evening so not too busy. Few people at the bar and music were decent. Bartenders were trying to make new drinks so got to taste a couple new experimental ones. The drinks we ordered were ok but not really worth the price.

Happened across this gem while wandering alone while waiting for the kids at a convention. Bartenders are fantastic. If you're looking for cheap sugar ridden college drink, this is not for you. If you enjoy true crafted cocktails come here instead of the sea of other spots along this street. And liquid nitrogen glass swirls at the start of every drink is just fun.

Google
This a fantastic bar/lounge with crafted cocktails. Its on the second floor with a great view of Rainey street. Bar staff and wait staff are friendly and prompt. Great outdoor area that is dog friendly. Comfort couches on the patio. They don't serve food but allow you to bring food in from the multitude of food trucks on Rainey Street just below them. I love this place !

Google
Get the popcorn it’s delicious 🤤 seriously tho this place is sooooper legit. The evening started with live music, then the DJ took over the night and absolutely crushed it. Highly recommend this place for a date night or a party night. Also the restrooms are gender neutral, so it’s a beautiful thing.

Google
Unique drinks here and nice seating overlooking Rainey street. Specialty drinks are $15 which is fine but biggest downside is the mandatory 20% tip without any warning so watch out for that.

My friend and I had a late flight out of Austin and decided to hang out on Rainey Street. The first spot we went into was The Tipsy Alchemist. This place was jumping. The music and the vibes were everything. Once we finally managed to squeeze into the bar area, we ordered drinks. The menu was amazing. It was hard to choose. Forgive me because I do not remember the names of these drinks, but they were absolutely delicious and beautiful. This place made me miss my bartending days. The fresh ingredients, mixers, and add-ins were wonderful. The bartenders were very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Definitely give them a try if you're in Austin.

Came here on Tuesday evening with my family. We got great service from Clayton. They put so much care in their drinks! Each one tasted delicious. I loved the hot bourbon drink. My family ordered the Mezcal drink, the apple cider martinis, and the espresso martini. Everyone was raving how good the drinks were. The free seasoned popcorn was a big hit too!

Cool spot (air-conditioning! Haha) with live music on the balcony on the weekends. Great hang out spot

Yelp
Really nice servers and bartenders. The ambiance is casual. We checked it out on a Saturday. The music overhead was really loud. Not suitable for conversations. You have to shout. The cocktails were pretty. I probably wouldn't return because it's not my scene anymore. Perfect for the younger clubby crowd. There's a parking garage at the same building that charges $16/hour, $25/2 hours. We ended up paying $46 for the night.

Yelp
Excellent service and amazing drinks. This bar is extremely cute and the staff was by far the friendliest in the area. Great atmosphere. Will absolutely return.

Yelp
Stopped in this weekend to escape the heat, and I was pleasantly surprised with the vibes! Staff are approachable and witty, and the drinks were tasty. A/C was blasting (thank goodness!) and there were a bunch of seating options both inside and outside, as well as live music on the porch just outside of the bar area. While we did not sit there, the outside seating had fans and I believe misters set up throughout the space, and there were many people sitting out there, so it must have been doable!

Yelp
We stumbled upon The Tipsy Alchemist while searching for a cocktail bar around Rainey Street, and its captivating ambiance immediately drew us in. Intrigued by the tiki vibe, I opted for the Loca Loma, while my friend went for the espresso-based delight, "Not Your Mama's Spresso." The presentation of our cocktails was nothing short of spectacular, and despite initial concerns about potential over-dilution due to the generous amount of ice, we were pleasantly surprised. The drinks proved to be exceptionally potent, and the unique cocktail mugs added an extra layer of charm to the experience. Our overall impression was overwhelmingly positive. The cocktails at The Tipsy Alchemist are not only intriguing but also expertly crafted. I wholeheartedly recommend checking out this bar if you find yourself on Rainey Street. The combination of inventive concoctions, impressive presentation, and an inviting atmosphere makes it a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts. Cheers to a memorable evening!

Yelp
Not sure why this place is rated 3 stars but if you're a fan of yummy cocktails, I would say this is a solid stop. Came here on a whim and overall, had a pleasant time with friends who all enjoyed the drinks and service here. Things to note (from a Tuesday night perspective) - Service: Quick and attentive! Staff overall was friendly and nice. ((Live Music)): had the pleasure to hear and support a local singer who was performing covers at this place. Definitely recommend sitting outside for better sound if you're a fan of live music - Monterrey Dreaming Cocktail: Beautiful presentation and overall, a nice refreshing cocktail that was light with hints of citrus and herbal notes. My only regret was ordering just one and not more. Given the vast options of cocktails here, I would come again to try out the other drinks :)

Yelp
A very strange place and honestly kind of a drag compared to other places on Rainey. Rainey is so cute, lively, and instagrammable, that the tipsy alchemist caught me off guard. You go up a huge flight of stairs but when you reach the top there's just a dude eating potato salad out of a Tupperware and let me in without checking my ID. The drinks were crazy expensive, which is normal for the area, but $20+ per drink is cookoo. My boyfriend said it was a super good old fashioned, but still. The service was great! I waited at the table and a nice waitress brought me water while I waited. The bartender was also really friendly. The dude eating the potato salad was nice, but definitely not serving the vibes you'd expect from a place charging upscale prices. On top of all this, the vibes were whack. The inside was not decorated at all- just concrete floors and basic, nothing chairs, no art or fun lighting or cute spaces. It didn't look classic or clean or minimalist or creative- just bleh. Everything in there felt sticky and kind of gross. For the prices they're charging and the space they have, they could make this into a really cool space but instead the vibes were pretty whack.

Yelp
I recently came to Tipsy Alchemist because of a women's group Facebook meetup. I was skeptical because I've never really had a great experience drinking in any bar on Rainey street. I walked up the stairs to get to the entrance and the inside was beautifully decorated for the holidays. I was greeted promptly and shown to where the meetup was happening. Our server was a delight. It was a quiet night with few patrons there, but she made us feel welcome and like we weren't a bother. She gave me drink recommendations and I ended up going with the espresso martini, without cream (per her suggestion). She was right. It was to die for. Plus, it gave me a small energy boost for our late night adventures.

Giselle F.

Yelp
We were celebrating my bestfriends birthday, and I would have to say that Joe has been the best bartender we have had in a long time. he made me a specialty drink (lychee martini) and it was delicious. he has made this night one to remember. If you have the opportunity to have Joe as your bartender then you are lucky.

Mina P.

Yelp
Came here with my husband and a friend who was visiting from out of town this past weekend and we were glad we came across this place. The space was beautiful and the drinks were delicious. I definitely had a lot of drinks and the bartender, Andres, was amazing. We went there right when they opened, so we had the place to ourselves for their first hour or so and it was nice to explore the space and talk to the bartenders there. Everyone was super friendly and funny (even the people next to us). We had a great time there and would come back here again. The only downside to this place is that the drinks were at least $17 each and that they don't serve food (but they do give out some delicious popcorn). Parking was tough to find, but hey it's Rainey St., so we didn't expect any less.

Michelle T.

Yelp
Stopped in upon first arriving in Austin after friend recommended visiting Rainey St. We saw a sign for happy hour from 4 to 7 so we decided to climb up the two flights to check it out. There were only about three other people in here and it's about 530 so a pretty dead place for happy hour on Rainy Street. That should've been our first clue. We each ordered a margarita and when I got the check it came to $40. That's because the cocktail was two dollars off (each one cost $15) but they added an automatic 20% tip to it. I guess they have to do that since they have so few customers they would otherwise not make any money at all. The cocktails were small and the only redeeming quality is that they had free popcorn. We won't be back and we don't recommend this place. Don't waste your time.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
If you want to sample creative and tasty cocktails in a party atmosphere in Austin, this is your place. The menu is purely cocktails and other beverages - if you want food, you can bring it in from one of the nearby food trucks. Though pricey, the cocktail menus is well curated and if you can't find what you like they will help you. We sampled a variety of sweet, sour and smoky, and enjoyed them all. A great place to get your drink in with friends

Sarrang P.

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends for a night out in Austin but it was pretty dead inside. Although it was a good cocktail bar! I loved the espresso Martini that my friend recommended. It's the best one I've ever tried and highly reccomend that! Drinks are a bit expensive but a good little date spot or to come with a group of friends for a chill spot.

Yelp
The Finer Side of Drinking During SXSW the Rainey Street District was packed with people mostly trying to get into the bars with free food and drinks. I ended up entering one of the places but encountered shoulder to shoulder of people in line or just standing around enjoying the festivities. I could not take it anymore where I needed a place to have a drink and work, and remembered a bar with lamps hanging upside down from the ceiling. Twice I have walked up the stairs to see the lamps but quickly had to go back down because the people I was with kept walking down Rainey Street and need to catch up with them. The place was called The Tipsy Alchemist. I was never unable to see what was fully up there until this day where I was alone and went beyond the top of the stairs into this upside down world of the 70 Rainey building. I was able to get a closer look at the lamps hanging on the ceiling and the place seems not very busy in the early afternoon. A few people were staring at their laptops and I walked to the bar to figure out what to order. It all looked very fancy with a glistening bottle collection along the wall and a bartender who liked like he stepped out of GQ Magazine. He asked me what to make for me and he educated me that this was a place where concatenations were custom made for the customer. So I said I wanted a cold sweet citrus flavored drink. The Alchemist was like chef in action where I watched him freeze a glass in CO2 giving off a cold mist, grab a whole bunch of ingredients, and begin an elaborate mixing procedure. It was like watching a shell gamer with alcohol instead a ball. And finally after one more shake he poured a darkish brown substance into the frozen glass and topped it with a thin slice of blood orange. I was worried at first of what I got myself into but after one taste it was the best mixed drink I had in years. It had the perfect combination where it was not too sweet or tart. This personalized mixture was worth what I paid for it and carefully took it to a table on the balcony to enjoy it while looking down at the crowded bars below. Besides balcony seating there are a wide range of seating from tables, bar, couch, pillow chairs and etc. If on Rainey Street keep walking all the way down to experience this place.

Sheila R.

Yelp
Drinks were amazing! Service spectacular! Live music fantastic! Highly recommend "not yo mama's espresso!" Shawn knew exactly what we needed!

Shytavia J.

Yelp
The drinks were sooo cute! Not too strong but definitely sooo cute!! The atmosphere is nice, I wish the music was a little more diverse. The customer service was great! The waiters are nice and know what they are doing! Very engaging and entertaining! Its very hot in any area other than the bar. But was a nice experience!

Chelsea G.

Yelp
*sigh* I can't ethically give this business a good review. Don't get me wrong, there were great features to the Tipsy Alchemist. For example: the live music Adam Knight provided was a total vibe. However, this is the one & only bad review I'll allow on my page. I hope the waitress informed the staff of the issue at hand so the disservice could be corrected at once, but who knows if she did. This review is more of a warning to other customers to check their glasses..! My water glass had a fruity taste to it. I assumed they served fruit-infused water here until my boyfriend told me his wasn't fruity... Then I realized my glass was just DIRTY..! I could even see debris of the previous drink in it..!!!! SO GROSS AND TERRIBLE CROSS CONTAMINATION. I work in the dental field and I know too much about oral health to tolerate this quietly...! You shouldn't have to be paranoid about the standards of a business, but check your glasses before you drink here..!!

Venie N.

Yelp
Came here on Sunday during the day time and it was pretty busy already but we got drinks and were served pretty fast! Unfortunately, I think the drinks are extremely overpriced for what you get. We paid $50 for 2 drinks!! I got a slight hint of alcohol in them but I expected way more for what we paid. The rooftop is nice and the views are good. Music was also good but we didn't stay for a long time because, compared to the rest of the bars on the street, it was just too pricy.

Betsy W.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks! They have a comfy patio with heaters and blankets as it cools off. The drinks are delicious & the service is great. Will return when I'm back in Austin.

Caitlin T.

Yelp
This is a cool day time spot on the corner of Rainy. They have a cool, open balcony with open seating. The DJ was good. We ordered a couple speciality cocktails and both were delicious and worth the wait, but priceyyy. You can order from the bar or a server will occasionally come around for orders. I personally wouldn't go at night but I'm old lol and don't want to be crammed in with all the college kids.

Jailen T.

Yelp
Nice view for sunset. Live music. You got a nice breeze sitting at the top and they have huge fans to cool you down. Drinks are pretty pricey considering the other bars in the area, I assume it's a newer building so they have to compensate for that. I got a drink called straight out of the horses mouth or something like that, it's basically just a fancy mule nothing special in my opinion. The foam on top was a nice touch but it tasted bad. They automatically add gratuity to your check so because of that. The employees are very attentive and come around quite frequently to clear up your table.

Tayo F.

Yelp
This is always one of those spots you pass by on Rainy. It always looked so up-class and fancy so we one day when it wasn't too late we walked in. It looked the part, it was very roomy and a nice place to hang and talk. Prices were a little high but we'll definitely check it out again a little later

Kaeleigh S.

Yelp
I love this place! It's at the end of Rainey St, so you can kind of avoid the mess below. It feels a lot classier than the rest of Rainey as well. The cocktails are delicious, with so many to choose from, and there is lots of space to sit and hangout. The servers and bartenders are always super nice, and the music is typically great too. I came for my bachelorette weekend a few years ago and have come again for other stuff, and always enjoy it here. They also just went above and beyond to make our night special for our friends' bachelor and bachelorette. We had planned a scavenger hunt which required two drinks to be brought out, with clues and what not, followed by the bride and groom ordering a special drink to get their next clue, and they were so game to make it happen. We really appreciate the effort the GM and bartenders put in to make the night so special and fun!

Kristi P.

Yelp
Stopped in for drinks when we were in Austin visiting. We sat on the outdoor patio. Drinks were pricy but very good. Service was great & the free popcorn was as well! They also had a singer who was very good. We'd go back next time we're in town.

Vanessa H.

Yelp
Customer service was great thanks to Alex and Clayton & love the ambiance! And the drinks do not disappoint.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
Love the name, cool decor and it's upstairs so a great place for people watching. Menu of drinks looked delicious and the frozen watermelon margarita sounded perfect for the hot muggy day. It was awful. It tasted like someone blended watermelon kool-aid with too much sugar and then added average tequila. I'm pretty sure I've had better margaritas served out of yardsticks at county fairs. They are also shady with the bill. They charged me 20% service fee and then really highlighted adding additional tip. I wasn't paying attention so of course I tipped another 20%. $45 for 2 really mediocre drinks (can't even call them cocktails).

Marla P.

Yelp
My husband and I checked out Rainey Street on a visit to Austin. We stopped in for 1 cocktail at the Tipsy Alchemist. We asked for our bill and when handed to us we were told that a 20% gratuity had been added. As we were not a large party, nor did we require much service, we were not happy to have the bartender add a gratuity. What happened to earning your tip and leaving it to the customer's discretion? We will not return. They also allowed people sitting in their outdoor chairs to smoke cigars - it made the whole bar smell.

Karl T.

Yelp
There are better choices in the area. Not sure how they compete. We arrived at happy hour, a tiny tiny tiny 4-6 oz margarita was $15 and included a mandatory $5 tip. So $40 for a total of 6-8 ounces of margarita for two. Non happy hour is a dollar or two higher. This one is a one and done. The area is cool though with many many other options. At last they had free popcorn

Suarta A.

Yelp
We are here visiting from Illinois John and Mike have been nothing short of amazing. Coming from a bartender in the Chicago area I always have high standards and service. I'm so happy we found this place we are future residence of Austin I can't wait to come back here. The cocktails are amazing the vibe is unmatched. Before we even order drinks we were handed a bowl of popcorn that were sweet and salty just like my personality.

Oluseyi O.

Yelp
I've been here a ton of times since moving to ATX in May. I've always had great service and the drinks are always good. Today was different. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I brought a group of friends. I've always had the same bartender, we sat near his area at the bar. Another bartender came and as she approached I leaned in and whispered to my friend "I want y'all to have him", to which she responded "You don't have to have me, you can have him. I know how to read lips". That was odd to me, and off putting as I wasn't talking to her and the fact that she was in my mouth and conversation made me uncomfortable. The comment was snarky and unnecessary.

Sandra B.

Yelp
Post brunch cocktails with the girls! Great cocktails and friendly service! Live music was nice too. I liked the violet, you're turning violet drink. I also tried the island drinks which was very tropical and i tried the watermelon one, this one was okay.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Came in today for a networking happy hour on the outside patio. Camryn was a lovely server! I was worried about the Texas heat before arriving, but rest assured their patio has blinds that come down and fans. You will be kept cool :) oh and the live music is an absolute plus!

Amy R.

Yelp
Elegant bar with a lively atmosphere. I know artisan drinks aren't for everyone but I really enjoyed not only watching the bartenders make them, but drinking them as well. The balcony was great for people-watching over Rainey St and the bartenders were all friendly and professional. My only complaint would be that the music was really loud for the afternoon. I totally understand it being loud at night, but it was hard to chat with my friends even outside and away from the music at 3pm. Otherwise it was a great experience and I'd definitely visit again if I'm in Austin again!

Vincent W.

Yelp
Nice bar to hit if going to Austin. Went for an event, and the drinks were excellent. Good atmosphere & good service, too.

Christina H.

Yelp
Drinks, AMAZING. Price, let's be honest, THIS IS NOT VEGAS. I appreciate the work, time, and quality offered to each individual drink, but I said what I said. Even for just beer/wine, prices are higher than the rest of Rainey street. When people think Austin or Rainey Street, we're thinking cool, casual vibes. If you really must, try their specialty cocktails, but stay away from the bottled/canned beers/seltzers/wine.

Aleah H.

Yelp
We decided to treat ourselves on our last night in Austin, so we stopped by The Tipsy Alchemist. They have plenty of space both in and outdoors, a cool view, and a very exhaustive drink menu. The cocktails are unique and a show to watch them be made! Of what we tried, the Straight from the Horses Mouth was the coolest to be made (torched ginger foam was impressive), and the Violet you're turning Violet tasted amazing. They are definitely pricy cocktails for Rainey (you'll end up paying $20 for a drink), but you get a creation, a trip for your tastebuds, and a show. ‍ When we visited the per person minimum was waived because the kitchen was closed. I wouldn't return if the minimum was active, but it was a great spot to enjoy a cocktail and the view if you are willing to pay for it. The bartenders were also knowledgeable in helping parse thorough all of the menu options. Overall, the aesthetic is great and they are truly invested in the cocktail craft if you are looking to treat yourself!

Celena S.

Yelp
I hate to give this place 3 but it truly doesn't deserve any higher IMHO. The atmosphere deserves much higher, the taste of the drinks is 5 but the service and price bring it to a 3. We asked our waitress for water 4 times before we actually got them. We asked for a water as soon as we sat down and it took almost 45 minutes before we got them. My drink was delicious! And the way it was served in the lightbulb glass was genius! But it was not worth $15. It was maybe 2-3 oz at most. My husband had the strawberry tea fizz and he said it was really good but again $15 for such a small serving is ridiculous.

Jeff H.

Yelp
The drinks were decent but definitely on the pricier side compared to the rest of downtown.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
What I found strange about this place is that when we (party of 4) sat down, the waitress automatically asked for a credit card to keep on file. After a few expensive drinks (they were pretty), we got the bill totaled out not showing the itemized orders. My husband said $100 for 3 drinks?!? I looked at the bill and the menu and with only 3 drinks ordered and 1 mineral water, it shouldn't be $100. They automatically added the gratuity. When we confronted the waitress, she said "oh, I gave you the wrong bill" Watch out you guys! The place is cute but like all the other comments "this not Vegas"

Allison H.

Yelp
Joe and Zane are amazing and make the BEST drinks!!! We will be back!!! Thank you x1000!!

Maddie M.

Yelp
This has been my starting point lately when going for a night out on Rainey. Classier than most of the bars. Expect to also pay classier prices. It can feel pretty busy at the bar but I enjoy watching the cocktails being made with the unique ingredients! Optional seating in other rooms/outside. They have a great menu to pick from for liquor. Definitely check it out!

Gema B.

Yelp
Although they did have great upstairs seating I didn't like that they did tell us gratuity was already included ... not a big deal but still Music was great atmosphere was nice very clean Over all 3 stars

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I was visiting Austin and came to this bar on Rainey street because my friend is really interested in science. I was a little disappointed to see that this bar is more of an upscale club-type experience rather than a science bar. They have bottle service that costs upwards of $300 and expensive drinks compared to the rest of the area ($15+). I was also with a group of 5 people and we each got one drink. The bartender automatically added a 20% gratuity, which caused the bill to be $100. It was fun to check out, but not somewhere I would go again.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday night, so it was pretty slow for context. The service was great! The staff had some great recommendations and also made me a drink with bubbles that was not on the menu (she called it Lady in Pink). Everything we had was so delicious. The patio was nicely decorated with a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. A lot of reviews mention the 20% tip and how they didn't know. I'm really not sure how you can miss it? It says all over the menu and is clearly outlined on your receipt. The drinks are very standard prices for craft cocktails (usually $15). Recommend if you are looking for a nice place for outdoor seating and some delicious cocktails! Huge list to choose from, and they were even willing to make something delicious not on the menu!

Spring L.

Yelp
A delicious $23 cocktail, so bring a sugar daddy. Dog friendly and bartenders are also friendly.

Kristine O.

Yelp
Wanted to check out Rainy street and found this place. This is more fancy than other bars around the area but really enjoyed our time there. It's a rooftop so you have both outdoor and indoor seating options. They had interesting cocktails and were pretty good. Our server was very attentive and nice.

Olive J.

Yelp
So... please beware about TIP already included in your drinks, who does that ?? My friend and I ordered a Manhattan and Old Fashioned, sat for 30 mins, trying to sip on our weak drinks , peoples watching, and etc etc. Finally we decided it's time to leave, so I called for a check, my total was $34 for 2 freaking drink ?? My fault for not checking the check first that this place is already charge the tip in it. For 20% for poor drinks and terrible service. I didn't see that the tip already included so I added more. The total that this place scam my money was $12 in tip alone. Just for 2 weak drinks ! Please avoid at all cause.

Jimmy H.

Yelp
Honestly a bit out of place, this sort-of designer, bougie bar amongst more down home Rainey Street houses. That said, it's quite lovely. I love the decor. Could use some sort of wind screen for windy days on the terrace. Main reason for the five stars is for the Saturday afternoon artist, Steffany something or other. She plays covers and takes requests. She was a crowd favorite, people really loved her and renditions of all sorts of songs, from pop favorites to cult. Seriously, whomever had the great taste to book her should get a raise. Bathrooms: All gender, super clean and nice.

Jeaneé S.

Yelp
The drinks are delicious...pricey, but delicious. Just be careful of the added gratuity. It would be easy to double up a tip if you're not careful. I'm sure they bank because of this.

Allison G.

Yelp
My friends and I went here during our Austin trip and absolutely loved it! The vibe was so cool on the inside and they had a huge outdoor patio as well. I really like all the decor and the seating options! The service was fantastic and the bar tenders really knew their drinks. They explained all the drinks we were considering and recommended drinks based on our taste. The drinks were super fun and unique. They used nitrogen to make several of the drinks and had fancy tubes the mixed drinks like the ''Mad Hatter'' up. I stuck to my drink, ''The Good Juice'' the whole time because it was so delicious. The Good Juice was like a blueberry whiskey sour with nitrogen freeze dried blueberries on the top garnished with mint. It was phenomenal! The only downside is the drinks are extremely expensive. It came out to be around $20 a drink which I can't really justify. They have all day happy hour all day Tuesday for about 7 drinks. They are all $10 each which is still pretty pricy for happy hour. I definitely recommend checking it out but I'd only get one drink or a drink to share. They have big bowls of the ''Mad Hatter'' and another that was disco themed. Those are huge and about $75 total. It sounds expensive but at $20 a drink, it's very worth it to split with a group!
