Phoenix’s Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"The Uprooted Kitchen got its start as a food truck nearly 10 years ago and is still one of Arizona’s best-loved vegan dining destinations today. Uprooted Kitchen prioritizes nourishing food with no refined sugars and all-organic, locally sourced produce. And while no sugar might make one question the restaurant’s impressive lineup of baked goods, one of the founders has a background as a pastry chef that’s made her especially well-equipped to prepare some of the best vegan treats around. Think: apple cinnamon coffee cake and wheat-free cashew snickerdoodles." - McConnell Quinn

Google
This is the sweetest and best little plant based restaurant in the east valley! The owners are so lovely. The food is amazing and creative. You can tell they really put their heart and soul in to what they are doing. 10/10!

Google
One of the best vegan restaurants in country hidden away in Gilbert, AZ! One of my favorites after only a few visits. What a find and what a gem from start to finish. If you want to eat well, feel well and be well. Give this place a try and thank myself every other five star review on here. Whole food plant based and fun for mind, body and spirit. We went three days straight and wished we could do three years. Proverbial needle in a haystack. Well done and such a cute couple that run it. If this type of food was in every town, not only would the country be eating better, they would feel amazing. None of that post meal regret of saying why did I eat that, only a desire to come back tomorrow. Big thanks to The Uprooted Kitchen for knocking it out of the park. Forgot to take more photos as wasn’t planning on a review. But took a few.

Google
Amazing food, owners, and atmosphere – you can't ask for much more! The food is healthy, nourishing, and so delicious, all crafted from scratch. And their desserts look absolutely incredible too. You really can't go wrong with anything you choose here. I'll definitely be coming back.

Google
We tried out Uprooted Kitchen this morning and really enjoyed it. If you're looking for vegetarian, vegan or just really high-quality food, this is a great option. I believe it is family owned, which always adds an extra point for me.

Google
I have been a vegetarian since 2009 and this was the best vegetarian meal I had in a restaurant! My friend also really loved her meal. And the carrot cake was perfect, not too sweet.

Google
Delicious. Aside from not having any signs on the display case items, the food is wonderful. Very tasty. I will be back, but I will study the menu in advance. The French toast is dense and healthy with sliced apple and banana toppings and is best with the optional maple syrup! The blondie and oat bar were great. Took the banana pie home.

Google
What a gem! It was hard to choose an item from their delicious menu. The flatbread, food and green tea were winners today. Fresh and delicious. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, even helping me with some tips for homemade gluten-free tortillas. I'm happy to have found this place and in such a beautiful setting. This will be a regular stop for me.

Google
Love the food, and the owners are nice people. If you want fresh plant based food, this is the place to dine. They change the menu every week. You will want to dine at least once a week. Erin and Chad continue to surprise me with their menu options. I recently had the Pad Thai Buckwheat Tacos. Three housemade wheat-free buckwheat/oat tortillas filled with tamarind roasted vegetables, red lentil scramble, pureed sweet potatoes, green onions, and cilantro cashew cream. Yeah, I had to pull the ingredients together from their website. Check out this place even if you aren't vegan.

Yelp
The Uprooted Kitchen offers so many delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes it's difficult to choose every time I'm there! Someone asked me today what I've tried there and the list was too long I had to pull up the menu to remember all of my favorites. For my latest visit, I tried a few new things and I wasn't disappointed! Buffalo Cauliflower Chickpea Burger, Smashed Roasted Potato and a Cold Turmeric Matcha. All of the dishes were vegan and so was my drink. Everything was so tasty as always! Chad is always remembers me even when I haven't been in for a while and is always smiling! Chef Erin is always busy in the kitchen pouring her heart into the food she prepares for all of her appreciative dining fans. They have open seating available on their family style tables for inside dining by the display case and patio seating outside for those wanting a little bit of sun outside of the Barnone building at Agritopia in Gilbert. Convenient parking is plentiful and all around the complex so it's so easy to get to them but admittedly gets quite crowded on the weekends. For those that have a sweet tooth they offer some wonderful treats that are healthier for you while also being indulgently delicious. For those that have to go gluten free, they do have some delicious items to choose from here. Stop in for a bite and discover all the wonderful things they have to offer!

Yelp
Owners are soooo patient with questions and easy to talk with and learn from. Interesting and unique food options! Love that health is top priority. Will definitely return.

Yelp
After seeing the reviews I was hoping for better but I was very disappointed. When I first moved to the area a new friend invited me out to try some vegan food. Everyone raved about the Uprooted Kitchen & I was very excited to try. I'm sad to say that I was very happy. The service was fine but my salad tasted weird. It had way too much going on & no flavor at the same time. The seeds didn't help. This is just not for me.
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
This is such amazing plant based foods. Delicious & nutritious. They have so many options and such friendly service.
google avatar

Austin P.

Yelp
Pros: good food, friendly staff, fun location (close to other restaurants, coffee shops, and the Beer Barn) Cons: me going into this meal with very high expectations of the breakfast sandwich. People raved about the breakfast sandwich on Yelp, and while it was good, it wasn't outstanding IMO.
google avatar

Liz F.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that if you have a nut allergy like I do they REALLY discourage you from eating here. To the point they almost seemed hesitant to sell me food at all. A bit surprising because most kitchens will just slap on a warning and let you make your own choice. But they gave me the sense that they don't attempt to keep any food types separate/ disinfected, which really has me hesitant to eat here. But I persisted and tried the tacos they had at the time. They were really good and I had no reactions! Flavorful and good texture. You'll order at the counter and take your food to sit where you'd like. There are tables indoor and out.

Yelp
Amazing food and ambience. This is in agritopia of Gilbert, quaint little restaurant. Food is very delicious. Amazing people here very community oriented. If you are vegan, you should definitely try here.

Yelp
Yes, I drove 2.25 hours to eat here, and yes I did have other business in the Phoenix area that day. But my first stop was The Uprooted Kitchen and my meal here left me hungering for the next opportunity to make the journey. I was fortunate enough to be there when the Thanksgiving Naan-wich was on special. I cannot get over how fabulous the housemade quinoa and oat naan was, and the holiday fillings were a real treat. Speaking of treats, the Chocolate Tart was incredible and it, alone, would have been worth every mile of that trip.
google avatar

Yelp
First time customer, I ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Buckwheat Tacos and Roasted Sweet Potato Fries. The meal was very tasty, satisfying and healthy. Enjoyed my conversation with Chad to learn how he and his wife Erin came to be plant-based restauranteurs. Will be back for more!
google avatar

Trenton C.

Yelp
The food here is exceptional, when you are looking for clean food without seed oils, this place is fantastic. The service is always great and friendly. The Bánh mì is my go to and I love the desserts.
google avatar

Suzette S.

Yelp
Food is ALWAYS delicious, consistent with flavor and plentiful. Service, always a good greeting and meal suggestions. Choice of indoor/outdoor dining with quiet surroundings and space.
google avatar

Gina D.

Yelp
We got the beet burger and ate on the back patio. Delicious burger, and great service! It's more quiet on the patio, which was refreshing from some of the hussle and bussle around.

Yelp
Delicious healthy food!! If you are looking for Vegan or Vegetarian spot this is the place! Located inside of Barnone. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile based off of the reviews. They have a wide selections to choose from. Service was definitely five stars!! Unfortunately for me, I'm allergic to tree nuts and many items had nuts. The owners Erin and Chad were super accommodating about my allergies and added in different ingredients to my order for substitutions when items contained nuts. They are super creative with their dishes and they definitely know how to make healthy food taste good!! I would definitely recommend this place and will come back to try other items on the menu. Thank you Erin and Chad!!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful food! The lentil walnut burger was delicious, as was the scramble bowl and breakfast sandwich. Very high quality ingredients and super friendly owners. The vibe of the collective is very cool as well. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
My new ABSOLUTE FAVORITE vegan spot in AZ! Wow. Their menu changes every week and has such great options from sushi to crepes to tacos: You name it! Very unique flavors made with love and care that tastes clean, has transparency, digests well, and is full of flavor without all the unnecessary additives or lower quality ingredients. The quinoa sushi rolls were large in size even though at first it looked small in the box. The sweet potato they use in their dishes is very complimentary. The pesto was too garlicky for me in the after taste hours later, but eating it was delicious as is. I am so thrilled that they use buckwheat in most of their entrees as it's gluten free and is so versatile. Parking is odd as it's inside a building with multiple vendors, but once you order and taste their creations, you'll get used to the feel of their location. Bathroom is also available within the complex. Definitely stop by and I'd suggest checking their menu within their online order section of the website first to see what they have available - so so sooo good!! Yes! 091623/092023

Yelp
First time visiting I ordered the French Toast and the potatoes. I thought the French Toast was okay tasted bland, I did enjoy the toppings. The potatoes were good. I gave this a Three, but could easily upgrade to a four on my next visit.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Yum love the food here it's like filling your body with natural vitamins oh and don't get me started on the cookies yummy!!
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
One of the best places that I enjoyed visiting and patronizing. Most of the staff here are ex Chicagoana which I really enjoyed the most. They are at least warm and friendly especially with the atmosphere provided here. The menu isn't too comprehensive but everything here is vegan. Their burgers were absolutely delicious, packed full of flavors. Great sides. It's best to sit down and eat because the burger falls apart easily so don't eat it if you're in the back seat of a car like I did. They have plenty of great sides on their menu. Prices are a bit high but the quality was worth it! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Rina L.

Yelp
Southwest scramble bowl and Crunchwrap were amazing! It's so exciting to be able to have options on a menu as a vegetarian. The desserts were incredible as well! Will be coming back to try everything else on the menu!
google avatar

Kana L.

Yelp
amazing!!! Such kind people, so happy I discovered this place. Desserts are phenomenal. Can't wait to try everything on the menu!

Traci K.

Yelp
There are few restaurants I can trust to serve the high quality of food that I've had at The Uprooted Kitchen. I've been dealing with conditions that limit my food choices. Seed and vegetable oils are a problem for me, so most restaurants are out. I didn't even ask if the food contained any of these oils or other ingredients that are not currently working for me. I took the risk based on some of the ingredients they do use. My belly was great afterwards, and my energy has been great in subsequent days. Can't wait to get back there for another meal soon!
google avatar

Mot Y.

Yelp
I concur with the other reviewers on this one. I'm amazed I discovered a vegan restaurant like this in Arizona. They provide numerous gluten- and soy-free options using ingredients from local farms. I'll definitely be visiting this place frequently when I'm in Gilbert. I just wish they were open later in the evenings so that more people could enjoy dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
100000000/10 stars. Amazing tasty food, kind service, cute unique location with plenty of parking, indoor and outdoor seating. The amount of vegan and vegetarian options is endless. Also plenty of gluten-free options. I can confidently say this is a new go to of mine I am in LOVE!! Definitely order the crunch wrap it was my favorite. The side salad and green dip that comes with is also so so tasty

Yelp
Haven't had the opportunity to visit Chad and Erin since they moved out of their food truck. Just happened to stop in for ice cream at Barnone and walked past The Uprooted Kitchen. Then my brother met me here and we ordered some great food. Love their menu! Glad to see they are doing well at their location.
google avatar

Dana D.

Yelp
LOVE this place! I've only been here twice, and realizing I need to go more. I'm not even Vegan, but I'm a pescatarian with a very healthy diet, and avoid dairy. They have such unique menu items that change weekly, all made with fresh, healthy ingredients. It's rare that I find a place with so many items that fit my dietary preferences, as I seek healthier options. You just try if you like healthy food. My only critique is that they don't have nutritional information for their items, but they at least list most of the ingredients on their menu. I also love that the menu changes weekly.
google avatar

Hannah Y.

Yelp
Wow! Just wow, wow, wow. Stopped by here to meet my friends while visiting the family. I'm from Seattle area so there are some fantastic vegan/vegetarian establishments up here. I didn't have a lot of expectations since this was, after all - AZ and it doesn't have a lot of options available for us avoiding meat products. Everything we ordered was made fresh with exceptional ingredients. Also, I really appreciated that they didn't drench the salads with inordinate amount of dressing. Every bite was a delight! To finish off, we had the Peanut Butter Cup - so good and again, natural flavors were not ruined by too much sugar or salt, just perfect. Definitely will visit again when I go see the family!

Yelp
I came across this local spot while looking up for vegan options in the area, and decided to give it a try. They are located near Agritopia inside their building with indoor and outdoor seating. There's plenty of parking available. We ordered baked french toast, chickpea cauliflower scramble, tea. We also got their thumbprint cookie and sunflower nut butter cookie. I liked the sunflower cookie so much that we drove 40 mins next day, just to get those since they are closed on Mondays. All the baked goodies are creation of the owner. We enjoyed chatting with them. If you are a local or visiting the area, definitely give it a try. Plenty of vegan, gluten-friendly options available.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Hurrah! A real vegan restaurant here in Gilbert. It's in the building named Barnone, just west of the other restaurants on the north side of Ray in Agritopia. We tried the "tacos" and the "sandwich", plus the "cheesecake". All were good recipes prepared with fresh ingredients, and all had good flavor. Excellent service snd sustainable packaging. A mix between reusable and compostable utensils. I saw no negatives, except it might take you a while to find it if you're not familiar with Agritopia. But, once you've been there, you'll go again and again (if you're into plant-based nutrition).

Yelp
The food was delicious my husband and I enjoy it will be bck.. Great service, I enjoyed my black beans burger very thing is made fresh even the desert was delicious atmosphere was nice the bulid was clean

Yelp
Cute find in Agritopia! It's a vegan eatery with so many home-cooked treats! They have a menu that will change each week and you can order ahead online. While the menue looks great especially the French toast we went to try out some of their treats! The owners were so nice talking us through each of the amazing looking pastries. We tried the chocolate zuchinni bread and sunbathers cookie. Both delicous! My husband was shocked that these were gluten and dairy free as they taste far better than most! Can't wait to go back and try more!

Pam B.

Yelp
Always fresh and creative rotating menu items. One of my favorites is the their french toast...It's hard to try other items because I like it so much. They make their own yogurt and jam to go in it with fresh fruit. (no syrup needed) No refined sugar in their desserts, which are absolutely delicious. I love the owners, they are so down to earth and "live" the Vegan life. Don't miss this gem...It is hidden in the metal bunker, quaint outdoor patio -for nice weather dining!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not sure Webster has enough amazing words to describe The Uprooted Kitchen. Tucked away at the end of the building with a couple communal tables inside and ample 2-4 top tables outside. This family business has no option other than to win every possible award and become the #1 place in the greater Phoenix metro for healthy food. Literally couldn't make up my mind... EVERYTHING on the menu screams eat me. Ended up ordering the Buffalo Chickpea Cauliflower Burger. The nutrient dense bun is VERY dense but yields a mild flavor. In my opinion, the bun is too thick for the patty or the patty isn't thick enough, just a little out of balance. The patty is topped with plenty of cilantro cashew cream. Enough flavor to give the sandwich a flare, but the real star of this masterpiece was the pickled onions. The chickpea cauliflower patty appeared (referring to color) like it'd taste like Buffalo, but I'd say that flavor was trace, if even detectable at all. Overall, this sandwich is so dense that you need not order anything else and I'm sure you'll be full for at least 1 day. The side salad that comes with the sandwich was super fresh, crisp and the lemon vinaigrette is wonderfully vibrant and super charged with lemon flavor. Took the carrot bar to go. I recommend letting it rest at room temperature for about 20-30mins. Right out of the cool display case, the cake is too dense and the flavors are put to rest. However, once it's ambient temperature your tongue is the perfect dance floor as the cashew cream cheese frosting melts in your mouth and the airy cake melds with it. The carrot bar satisfies your sweet tooth without that yuck feeling of standard sugar and junk carrot cake. You can feel your body loving you more and more with each bite you take. There's only a QRC menu (my only complaint)... I'm a physical menu person. I can't wait to return for more goodness.
google avatar

Joyce C.

Yelp
This is my latest obsession in Gilbert. I was going an event out of state where I had to pre order and one choice was tempeh. I had no idea what that was so I checked Yelp to see who had it on the menu. What a pleasant surprise to find out I could try it a mile from my house! I've been 3x now. I've had a tempeh sandwich what tasted just like a BLT , a veggie scramble, and about 5 of their bakery items. My favorite is the layered chocolate bar with buckwheat. You know some restaurants the desserts look so good then you are so disappointed when they don't taste great? This place is the opposite. The deserts don't look over the top great-- but that first bite says otherwise. Yum! Oh...and the iced tea. I forget what it's called but it has all sorts of spices-- cinnamony goodness!

Kristen P.

Yelp
Truly the best plant-based restaurant in the valley. Everything is made from scratch and they use top quality, organic ingredients. Good portions. Creative, healthy, and delicious food! The owners are such amazing people. Plant-based or not, you will love this place!
google avatar

Leyla B.

Yelp
The menu was full of delicious and creative vegan dishes that were both healthy and satisfying. Chad and his wife are absolutely lovely and you can tell they make their food with love. We tried their blueberry crepe, French toast, buffalo cauliflower burger, bagels, dessert- the ingredients were fresh and the flavors were perfectly balanced. We can't wait to come back and try more of their amazing dishes when we're back in Arizona.

Yelp
Out for a bike ride with the bear and decided to stop in for lunch. From the moment we were greeted I knew this would be the place for us. Thank you Chad for being so incredible and answering all our questions. Everything was amazing and that includes the plant based mango Cheesecake!!! Cheesecake was Legend...wait for it...and since it's plant based I know you'll hate this part.....dairy... Legendary! Perfect for lunch or on Wednesday and Friday dinner! Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
My husband and I have been wanting to try this place for so long and honestly, I wish we tried it sooner! This spot was so delicious and I left feeling full but not guilty or bloated. I actually left feel very satisfied and wanting to go back! My first visit I ordered the Tempeh breakfast sandwich which was full of so many amazing flavors and textures. I loved it and would order again but I must warn you, it was VERY messy! Be prepared and don't wear white. My husband ordered the chickpea cauliflower scramble and I felt like I was eating a lot of his food as well! It's another great dish with lots of flavors with unique textures and you will feel good about what you ate. I would highly recommend! I can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp
Always something different, always something yum! Today it's gingerbread cashew crepes- wow! Filled me up with energy and happy vibes.
google avatar

Trista C.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Super clean. The flavors are amazing! The staff is fantastic. Everything we had today was delicious. We had the Korean jackfruit tacos, curry lentil wrap and lemon blueberry crepes. Was so impressed we took home some desserts too. We do not dine out often since we haven't found a lot of vegan options in our area so we are grateful we found this place. This place is perfect.

James H.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I weighed in on the UpK's food. AMAZING as always. Had some smashed potatoes and French Toast. No way you can go wrong here unless you're a _______ (you decide). We literally budget to make sure we eat here. A. Lot.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Just wow! We had pumpkin soup, the everything bagel with cashew cream cheese/avocado/tomato, and the peanut butter cup. The food tasted so fresh, and the seasoning was spot on. The dishes are prepared in front of you, and the owners were super friendly. We travel to Phoenix about once a month and definitely will be back. I wish they sold a cookbook of their recipes so I could enjoy this food every day. :) The Barnone that houses this restaurant and other artisan shops is a neat concept, and we enjoyed walking around it after lunch.
google avatar

Grace R.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great GF options! The place is cute and makes for a fun experience. The menu has a wide variety of choices and from talking to my group who all got something different, sounds like you can't go wrong. The service was great and the portion size was perfect! Will definitely be going back!

Lily L.

Yelp
Love this place Great atmosphere and food choices for those with food allergies. My favorite are the tacos, so good :) Would highly recommend

Yelp
Um, YES, okay. Gather around children. I must tell you about The Uprooted Kitchen. I'd had a busy day at work and my boss said, "Hey, lunch on me!" Um, yes, okay. I'm on week 5 of eating a plant-based diet, so my options are a little more limited than what they used to be. I searched for Vegan restaurants on Yelp and The Uprooted Kitchen graced my eye balls. I needed something fast, and fortunately this place offers online ordering through their website! So if you're in a pinch, head over there. Ordering was quick and easy, but **take note of their hours because this is primarily a breakfast/lunch place.** I went with the corn chowder with housemade wheat-free seeded naan bread. I headed to the north pick-up window and the friendly staff member was masked and quickly got me my food. Nice and easy! I brought my food home and dove in. Omg. My tastebuds. I can't even begin to describe to you how ABSOLUTELY FREAKING DELICIOUS this corn chowder is!!!! It's sweet, a little spicy, it's CREAMY, and has a whole bunch of herbs which make it beyond delicious. It, like, smelled amazing and then tasted even amazing-er???? This MIGHT have been the most delicious thing I have eaten in the 5 weeks of my plant-based diet (or even this entire year). The naan bread that came with it was a little underbaked and chewy, but I really can't complain because the corn chowder was the true star here. I will absolutely, 100%, without a doubt becoming back here to try their variety of desserts and other menu options. Can't wait!!!
google avatar

Kate P.

Yelp
Super cute place with a super nice staff! All of the food options looked amazing, I decided on the mango breakfast crepe. It was delicious, but there was lots of the mango sauce on it. I do wish it came on a plate but the box made it easy to take it to go (it was pretty filling!) Overall really yummy food.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious, organic and I was so excited to find things I can eat again that I don't have to cook! Being Vegan can be challenging when eating out but not from here!
google avatar

Ariel J.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect when coming here but I am so happy that we did. The food was AMAZING, can't tell that it wasn't healthy. Was worried that it wouldn't fill us up but everything was very filling. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing if you're in the mood for real food, made perfect and super friendly and caring customer service. We love the bun on the lentil burger (it was thick, delicious and hearty). We also loved the huge selection of vegan desserts and splurged on two that we at every last bit of. I wish I could take this restaurant back to Colorado with me. You won't see a place as genuine as this one there. Thank you!

Yelp
Great change in f pace. You can taste the love and feel good about what your consuming. The food was delicious and I want to come back. We need this type of diversity in our food space and I an so grateful to have this choice. My wife and I both ordered the Tempeh Breakfast Sandwich! Great sandwich it has a great bite and is substantial! I'm a hungry guy and it filled me up. Comes with a great salad and roasted potatoes which really rounds out to a great meal. Thank you guys for a great experience!
